Value for money?

More of the same please!
Medical passed, ink on the contract dry, smile frozen in history with the first picture of the summer of a new lad holding up an equally new Newcastle shirt.

Yep, Yohan Cabaye has officially joined Newcastle and kicks off what will hopefully be a very decisive summer. Decisive for a manager poised to put his stamp on the club. Decisive for a much vilified owner looking to gain some support. Decisive for NUFC fans who are awaiting to see just what the ambition of the club is in the transfer market.

Cabaye has been loyal too Lille and that loyalty has seen him raise the French league tittle this past season. He’s a well respected player in France and should become a good member of Newcastle and represent the club well. He’s becoming a regular player for the French national side and is a very steady footballer.

It’s a good deal for the club and will add quality whilst saving funds for further reinforcements. Some may feel that he is a type of player that isn’t really a “need” in our squad, but I disagree and feel that the powers that be know exactly what need they are filling.

Which I guess brings us onto the rest of the transfer window. With only a few million spent it means that we still have a lot of powder kept dry that we can perhaps use at a later date. In fact with the signing of Cabaye you could argue that keeping our money made is a sound decision. I mean would anyone complain if we got another three or four players of Cabaye’s quality for the same kind of fee?

It’s this kind of careful approach that is hopefully going to set us up for a good season. Don’t get me wrong, I’m acutely aware that you generally pay for what you get, but it doesn’t mean that the club shouldn’t try and buck the trend like they’ve managed to do with Hatem Ben Arfa, Cheik Tiote, Yohan Cabaye and even Dan Gosling.

It’s about getting the biggest bang for your buck, and I think the Toon are doing that right now. Hopefully it won’t stop there and we can look forward to some more diamonds being unearthed. In fact if we’re careful perhaps we could even stretch to a ready made diamond?

I think the one thing that we can gain from this summer is that the club have put a lot of work into their potential targets. I mean exploiting unknown release clauses like they did with Cabaye and are reportedly doing with Neil Taylor smacks of hard work and careful planning. Sure the critics may point towards them being at the cheaper end of the transfer scale, but Graham Carr and the rest haven’t done bad at getting us some good European players for reasonable fees so perhaps they deserve a bit more trust.

Time will tell of course, but keeping money in the club, or not wasting it unnecessarily, can only be a good thing. Whether that money be used to pay off some debt, pay wages, or pay transfer fees remains to be seen, but all three of those scenarios will benefit the club long term.

Now we need Graham Carr and Alan Pardew to get us some more cheap players of the Cabaye ilk!

  1. If it literally came down to a straight swap between cole and smith i’d take it, but thats the only instance and its mainly because it would at least free up some wages. How the hell can he rate him? We already have Ameobi and Best who are better than him, surely Ashley wouldn’t allow it due to his age anyway?

  2. theres loads of talk on the geordie banter page on lamebook that the zog is coming for 10 mill.

  4. funkyjesus@75, I suppose the same could be said about Nolan, Owen, Barton, Collocini, Enrique etc during our relegation season.

They should all remember that they were part of the relegation debacle..

  5. I’m not sure wham would co sider smith & cole to be of equal value..after all cole is a England international

  9. Munich,

No one bought them though. The only one of those who left is Owen and he was free and from what I know, doesn’t get paid unless he makes the team sheet.

Bassong was one of the few who left that tried and he went for big money. Martins went abroad to some team because the guy has the potential to be a lethal striker. Outside that, we didn’t lose too many after relegation, we lost before it really.

No one looked at our team and thought “why not sign them?” and no one did. Yet people look at West Ham and expect Rob Green and Cole to go back up to the Premiership – why?

  10. ‘Beyond Derisory!
Newcastle Utd have apparently dismissed West Ham’s initial £3m offer for Kevin Nolan as derisory! Yet,we see unconfirmed reports this evening that the very same Newcastle Utd have agreed terms with Demba Ba on move to St James Park, a transfer that would see West Ham receive …… absolutely nothing!’

    Er…

No.1 You agreed with the player that should you go down he could leave on a free transfer apparently, you were desperate, it happened you went down, bummer he can leave for nothing, sucks huh?

No.2 According to the guy on talksport West Ham didn’t offer £3M for Nolan they offered £1.5M … he said he knows this for a fact because it’s what David Sullivan told him. So er, the £3M thing is made up bollix from a northern newspaper and you only bid a derisory… yes DERISORY £1.5M 😀

  11. witters, maybe West Ham have no option mate. Or there again Cole might decide to stick around and try to help get the club back in the big league..

Rob Green, wouldn’t have him, Cole, not sure either, I was just picking up on this Pardew likes Cole rumour which has been doing the rounds for a while.

Shola is actually much better in my books, at least Shola can have a blinder every now and then, can actually score some decent goals, and has the “excuse” of fitness levels…Cole is just shocking plain and simple.

    Speculation:
The back page of tomorrow’s Daily Mail makes for interesting viewing – it basically says Man United’s bid for Phil Jones is in tatters and that Liverpool have stepped in with a £22million offer

      (Quote)

  27. Newkie Shola is injury prone and cole is younger quicker and stronger , wouldnt mind a swap deal Smith for cole then flog Ameobi for say 2million

  29. http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story/_/id/927571/manchester-united-forward-bebe-to-join-besiktas—report?cc=5739

Bebe is going to Besiktas on loan with a view to a £2m move. £5m loss for Man Utd with that one. They have “interesting” transfers.

Bebe changed his agent from his old one to some guy called Mendes, and then signed for £7m. Man Utd could have signed him for nothing a few weeks earlier with his old agent.

David De Gea is supposedly signing for Man Utd soon…. he is changing his agent to this Mendes guy currently.

Jose Mourinho also has an agent – this Mendes guy.

    Football is crooked.

  30. JG- I was thinking that, ive seen some good stuff from Cole, can pardew get the best out of him and make him consitent? who knows! 😛 😆

  31. icedog,

Your story is in relation to Phil Jones’ £16m release fee not being public knowledge and they think there has been tapping up/a a club leak for Man Utd to discover that information.

It would mean an illegal approach/internal rules broken. Relates to my previous post.

      (Quote)

  32. Yeah, this is why I get a bit worried about how we are finding out about Dan Gosling’s contract situation and the likes of Cabaye/Neil Taylor’s release fees.

Ashley has admitted he lies to fans of “his” team and his sweat shops have been over BBC TV, I can’t honestly say I have total faith in his tactics in transfers either.

Then again, we lost a player due to Liverpool hiring an agent for the day. What do I know?

  33. Been reading some interesting news here in holland from Voetball international , they usually are spot on with their reports . They are saying that Liverpool have moved for clichy as their new left back , makes me wonder if Pardew has convinced Jose too stay . They are also reporting that Manure have sealed a deal for Ashley Young and it will be announced next week when Young returns from his holiday .

  37. Tapping up is illegal, sending your super spy oot to find release clauses in contracts sounds perfectly fine too me
I wouldn’t be surprised if Ashley and/or dekka tapped up these agents and told them if you let us know of any players of yours who have these clauses we’ll comp you for letting us know 😉
That’s just good sleuth work IMO. It’s in the contract. Is it also in the contract that “we’ll give you this release clause but it has to be secret” ?
Ash is finally doing due diligence 😆

  38. Will do Icedog , i keep scouring all the good press here and in belgium and france , Makes you think though Liverpool are the only team reported to have real interest in Jose . If you ignore all the **** the rags print , Jose’s agent said the rumours about Barca were not true .

      (Quote)

  39. I wonder if maybe Enrique will re-sign for us out of embarrassment that he hasn’t sparked a major auction for his services.

After all the mess we made amongst ourselves over him leaving, it turns out Liverpool were the only ones really interested and even they seem more keen on Clichy now they know he is available.

Maybe he will get a slap back down to reality and realise he has improved but he still isn’t outstanding yet.

      (Quote)

  40. I am browsing about a Man Utd forum at the moment reading their never ending chicken jokes about Blackburn and you know what – they seem to have a soft spot for Newcastle (on this forum anyway).

They are saying Newcastle should sign Demba Ba because he would compliment Cabaye, Ben Arfa and Jonas and we may well have a squad to compete for Europe next season if we can get Ba and maybe some others.

I always thought Man Utd fans went off Newcastle after Keegan’s rant. I guess not.

      (Quote)

  41. Evening all so what’s this on demba ba?? Have been away from blog few days but been catching up!!

      (Quote)

  42. Liam,

Apparently Demba Ba was caught giving Cheryl Cole some porn on a beach in Sweden and he thought it was Carlton’s sister and they had a fight and he is signing for us to get away.

Joe and Ashley Cole watched them on the beach.

      (Quote)

  43. Does that mean we get giggs aswell as ba?? Poor old Cheryl surprised ba could run away from the fight with a dodgy knee! Only thing holding me back from really thinking this a good deal… He could be a parasite like that good for nothing Owen…

      (Quote)

  44. There are about 4 straight pages of nothing but them over this Phil Jones transfer.

Mainly puns on words really, even stretching it to the likes of “breast of intentions” and “can Jones play on the wing?” and stuff.

I was surprised that these Man Utd fans seem to want Newcastle to do fairly well.

      (Quote)

  45. i really mean this – if we get ba , nzog and another good striker with ben arfa and gutierez bombing at you then it will scare the **** out of any team

      (Quote)

  46. Also in that talksport interview he said there is a team in the north with lots of money looking at a well known spanish player guessing Manu? Haha thought could be the toon but unlikely to be on back page even If it is the mirror!!

  47. Liam,

Ashley personally called Dave Whelan and offered £1m up front with £11m payable later if N’Zogbia scores 100 league goals for us.

Dave Whelen apparently said Liverpool can have Zog for £8m if Kenny let his daughter give him a lap dance.

Ashley told him to suck his JJB.

  48. @toonsy

    Maybe a thread subject.

Since Mike Ashley has taken over we have had Dennis Wise deciding which players came to the club above Kevin Keegans head.
    Keegan left because if this.

No one seems to bat an eyelid that Graham Carr is deemed to be the man that everyone is relying on to identify players.

My questions are; does Pardew have any say in who is brought in?

So far he seems to have identified good players but what happens if he identifies a dud that Pardew doesn’t like? Will Pardew have the final say?

    Does Pardew identify players ?

Has Ashley introduced his original idea of director of football, in Graham Carr, and Coach (not manager) in Pardew right under our noses without any of us noticing except Bobby Shinton?

To me, Graham Carr is an improved Dennis Wise but under the guise of scout and Pardew has come in, fully knowing the circumstances, as a coach and not a manager.

I again notice things that others don’t and would like to hear your views.

    Shinton one step ahead!
