Newcastle swoop for international striker as Cabaye begs Gervinho to join.

The man of mystery.

The man of mystery.
Just who could it be?
There are a few bits and bobs in the Sunday Sun today that caught my eye, so I thought I would round them up into one handy article again for you all.

One of them is the bit about Newcastle chasing an international striker at a top European club, and how Newcastle are willing to break the bank to get him. Now the Sunday Sun stops short of mentioning names which I guess will mean that Twitter and the likes will once again be a breeding ground for rumours. It will be interesting to see what names are dreamed up.

Personally I haven’t a clue who it could be. Apparently it’s a player who is being courted by other clubs, and it’s also not Demba Ba but then again it could all be irrelevant as we might not end up with him. As ever, it is just speculation until something concrete happens.

Meanwhile, the Sunday Sun understands that Neil Taylor is NOT a replacement for Jose Enrique and insists that senior left-backs are being sought after should Enrique decide to leave Newcastle this summer. That Spaniard is apparently stalling on the new contract offered, which doesn’t look promising. However, it also doesn’t mean that he is definitely off so I guess we have to maintain some hope.

In other news, new signing Yohan Cabaye has urged his former colleague, Gervinho to join him at St James’ Park. He told the Sunday Sun: “Gervinho is a player I like a lot – on and off the pitch”.

“When we played together in Lille, I told him he must come and join me at Newcastle as well! I think he listened. Now we will see what happens.”

We’ll see what happens indeed, although if I was Cabaye I wouldn’t be getting my hopes up. It does seem like Cabaye is pretty sold on Newcastle though, and it seems that Alan Pardew done a good job selling the club to him when the pair met prior to the completion of the move.

Cabaye continued: “I was especially concerned to find out about the desires that the manager had. I went and talked to him and he answered all my questions. That was very important.”

“I was very impressed by Alan, he said he likes to play football in a passing style and he also knew a lot about me. He answered all the questions I had. I knew it was the right move after talking to him.”

So there is a bit of a round-up of all the news so far today. Most of you know that I sometimes do it like this rather than stringing it out over several articles. I’m not interested in hits, figures ad revenue like some other sites and would prefer not to waste your time by keeping it concise.

What do you think of all this?

  2. About the international striker Mark Douglas (sunday sun chief sports writer) has said on twitter that he is:

“Around that age. (25) Similar scoring record to Gameiro”

“Same place 90% of their targets are..”

High scoring french striker around 25, any guesses?

Of course it could all be a load of rubbish…

  3. Moreno @4

I would agree but he also said:

Gameiro’s gone-but Toon will bounce back on Mon w/ a £7m mega offer 4 a top Euro striker http://t.co/aTuZrCw #NUFC (ignore wrong headline)

£7m seems a bit low for Sow

  4. That Erding guy from PSG, 9 goals in 34 starts in Ligue 1, even Ameobi is better 😆

  5. afan,

then no doubt we’ll be told to #### off! Lol

Hopefully a clause in his contract? 😛

  7. Flippin heck….you gotta laugh at Ed’s blog sometimes….

They posted a picture of Mario Gomez at FC Bayern with the title “are we after this striker”…howay man…get real… 😆 😆 😆 😆

    What a waste of time…Gomez is a 50 million euro striker ffs…madness…

  8. Hats off to Ashley? what for? i would wait if i was you, we might re sign Kuqi after they have tried and failed to rob and steal from everyone, I would imagine that they are not held in a high regard by other clubs.
Thats why Nzogbia is not back, Dave Whelan hates Ashley with a passion and wouldnt be suprised if he took great delight in flogging him to sunderland just for spites sake.

  9. Demba Cisse, plays for germane side SC Freiburg, scored 24 goals, only rated £7-£10 million. Only thing is says usual hunting ground, this isn’t Germany 😕

Toonsy, you can use the line “I read ’em so you don’t have to.” I always liked that one.

  12. Bryan Ruiz from Twente maybe ? he is looking for a move to a bigger league . Was reported to be off to benfica but his club has saids that is not a done deal . He fits the bill , would be a very good signing .

  13. @9….hats off to ashley?? just one question beg there like……why? he aint done anything yet. so what, he has bought a midfielder for 4.3 million quid…. lets wait and see who we offload and what the shapre of us is come aug 31st. if we have cabaye in but jose /nolan/barton out plus some others and a unhappy team spirit it will not have been a good window at all.
i am taking the 5th on this one as at the minute its too soon to say. the sensible money will be on jose going out the back door on last day of window with no replacement coming in.

  14. Hey up lads, greeting from sunny (wet) France! Only a quick one as I’m on me hols after graduating, but is anyone else suspicious that Cabaye hasn’t been given a shirt number? Waiting to sell Barton so he can have the no. 7? Or am just I being reet paranoid?

It appears that the striker @MsiDouglas is referring to is Mevlüt Erdinç at PSG

    cwarr07 Colin
Mevlüt Erdinç & Demba Ba would be perfect additions to #nufc Proven goalscoring records, pace & trickery of Erdinç pace & power of Demba Ba

  18. Didn’t Erdinc only get 9 goals last season, £7 mil for another Ameobi no thanks!!!!

  19. Sow is definitely worth more than 7m 😥 but would be happy to see him with a Toon shirt on!

Everything I have heard about Cabaye, his football and character impresses me – Lille’s fan are very unhappy to see him go – and if this is the quality Pards is attempting to bring then I am excited for the first time since Cashley came in.

Glass half full (for now  )

  21. Another **** story from the sunday sun this morning then? I saw picture of mario gomez on another blog…hahahahahaha Really???

I have no doubt we are after a striker, but for it to be a top international at a top european club, its going to cost loads…Cant see us spending a massive amount on one player, though you never know…

      (Quote)

  22. David, how can you say that when he got 20 goals the season before. If Gameiro only got 10 goals next season I’d still want him.

Army, Taylor’s coming back from holiday in the next few days to complete the deal it seems and Ba is getting completed early next week.

      (Quote)

  23. we wont be getting anyone who is a top player cos all you have to do is read AP waffle today. He says enough to scare away any top draw person,

a)… we cant afford to buy them
    B) …we can afford to even pay half what spurs pay in salaries
c)…..we are aiming for a mid table finish in order to go cap in hand to owner to invest in a years time for a push on from there.

WHile its enough to get a few middle range players in…its not going to inspire anyone of a high calibre or high ambition. we are in danger of becoming a stepping stone prem club.. a club that players use to get foothold in, then impress and try to move on or are pushed on when their value goes up.

Exactly what ive maintained all along but people just seem to ignore the facts and keep dreaming.

I honestly believe if Pardew stated we are not after Gervinho, some people would still believe we would. 😕

      (Quote)

  25. Craig…

Pardew didn’t say we couldn’t afford players at all, he said we couldn’t complete on wages. He did say we could complete on the pitch…

      (Quote)

  26. @staffs

It’s not Pardew bringing them in it’s the Director of Football, oops I mean chief scout Graham Carr.

      (Quote)

  27. @witters

So now do you accept our wage cap is low like I have said all along?

      (Quote)

  28. BSN9@40 – And your proof is…

Surely it would be a normal manager-scout relationship where the Pardew says what he is looking for, Carr recomends various players who Pardew may or may not pass on to Ashley/Lambias to bid on.

      (Quote)

  29. witters….compete on the pitch with what though? the very type of player he is reffering to are the ones with guts, heart and pride in newcastle…like er nolan and barton!! if you were a gervinhio and you had one manager saying ‘we want to buy the best and get back into the champ league now blah blah and we are willing to pay for the best’ – thats spurs and then you have AP saying ‘ hey, we are aiming for a top ten spot and will then crawl on our knees to owner in about a year to try to get some investment to kick on, oh and we want you to come but we will pay you half the pay other clubs will’…. now call me a bit negative (as i am sometimes…. although i am trying hard to see the positives in AP etc).. but i am sure the gervinhio will choose Arry.

      (Quote)

  30. how carnt we not compete with spurs on wages,we have a bigger stadium, fair enough they were in CL for 1 season..but now there playing europa which dosnt bring in a major wedge of cash does it..

      (Quote)

  31. Bobby…it depends what you mean by low but I think we don’t have a wage cap as such but it’s obvious we’re working within financial constraints.

Spurs/Liverpool are prepared to pay bigger wages & it’s as simple as that. That will have a bearing on the type of players we can sign but I would rather have a go at signing players who are considered out of our league than not bother at all.

      (Quote)

  32. Hitman, they will be getting a load off last seasons Champions League and for finishing 5th.

      (Quote)

  33. Pardew says ashley wants stability, and he needs to ignite mike ashley, get him excited basically…All mike ashley is happy with is mid table, he will not pay big wages, or transfer fees…fair enough, we cant afford it or whatever, but if we want to progress, there comes a time when we have to take a risk and spend big money. Tiote, ben afra, colo etc will not hang around if all our ambition is, is to finish mid table every year. Why is pardew saying he has to get mike ashley excited, if ashley isnt excited already he should f*** off.

Every clubs ambition should be to aim high, otherwise whats the point.

      (Quote)

  34. if ashley wants the club to push on we have to be competing with the likes of spurs..
the man is just trying to do it on the cheap which wont work..you get what you pay for..

      (Quote)

  35. Also there is no need for pardew to have to say this in public, most realistic fans know where we stand, there is no need to tell everybody in a paper. I want to know about barton, nolan etc, not how he needs to motivate the owner.

      (Quote)

  36. Devon Mag

I don’t think we need to worry too much about the shirt number or lack of it. I think the numbers are given out closer to the season starting, couple of weeks to a month before. The players current numbers could change, say HBA might be given the number 10, but nobody knows yet or he may be happy with the one he already has. So don’t think it means too much yet, but do know where you are coming from about Barton, just hope he stays

      (Quote)

  37. im not on about the fee paid,im on about the wages,if we are to push on we have to start paying the wages to get them here.less were just going to end up loosing out..
newcastle have always had to offer that bit more to get players up here,fk nos why like its gods country up here, but most players like the bright lights of the smoke.

      (Quote)

  38. Can I just say that it makes no sense for people on here to believe Pardew is a sh*te manager that is happy for us to be a ‘feeder club’ and there is a stupidly low wage cap.

You can only believe one or the other. (Not that I believe either).

Cabaye moved for a league winning, champions league qualifying team, so either:
    a) Pardew convinced him that we are a club with ambition and that we would be aiming for Europe within a few seasons.
    b) He was given a stonking wage increase

One has to be true otherwise he wouldnt come. I think tbh that his transfer signals both that the wage cap is at an acceptable level and that we are aiming high for the future

      (Quote)

  39. the tweeps are saying were in for Emanueal adebayor,i doubt it like his wages would be through the roof.

  42. i think we are going to be a real catch 22 club with no ambition or ambition that will allow us to go only so far under dekka and cashley – right or wrong i am not saying, really i dont mind as being all things nufc means i am going to be in it long after ashley has gone. we want to buy quality for less and pay less – which is great in the off, really it is. like this cabaye fella… he seems the real deal as does toite etc. So, what happens is we do get better and get stable.. bouncing around the euro slots maybe. Then their contracts get into last year and they will want pay rise cos at big prem club and have had four years to impress everyone and get loads of suitors in prem. their agents will know the score and they will want pay rises. our club will say no of course and so we start again… it means that every four years or five if they walk away free.. .we will get a huge squad rotation kicking in, thus we will be in constant state of flux. look now, its happening… jose wants off, nolan not happy, barton running it down, jonas saying if jose goes he wants off…….all these guys will leave for nominal amounts compared to their value or will run it down to nothing. So in our wisdom…will nufc make more money by paying lower end wages but loosing top players and being destabalized every four years or are we going to be better off?

      (Quote)

  43. If Spurs’ wage cap is twice as big as ours, ours isn’t too big. I don’t think Spurs pay anyone over £70k a week. So that would be our cap at £35k per week. Not a lot in today’s market.

If we’re going to swoop for this international we’ll need to do it quick before some one else comes in and offers him proper wages.

Still underwhelmed by the club to be honest. I know it’s eary but the limatations their imposing on themselves is going to make it bloody hard to attract the right sort of players to move us on.

      (Quote)

  44. Hang on a minute, before people starting jumping on the wage cap bollocks, why don;t they use their fookin eyes and read FFS,

“I don’t think we’re anywhere near Spurs in terms of the wage bill. Theirs is double ours,”

So their WAGE BILL is double ours. Npwt about a wage cap anywhere in that at all.

Is it really so surprising that Tottenham, who were in the Champions League last season, have a bigger wagebill than ours? Look at their player compared to ours and use some common sense FFS!

      (Quote)

  45. Pardew told the Sunday Sun: “I don’t think we’re anywhere near Spurs in terms of the wage bill. Theirs is double ours, so you can forget about Spurs.
“That doesn’t mean to say we can’t compete with them on the playing pitch. On transfers, we can’t compete with their wages. We can’t compete with Liverpool’s wages.
“We’ve got to face that reality. We can’t.

      (Quote)

  46. I’m sure I read S Taylor was on £45k a week, Cabaye is reportedly on £50k – I would expect we have offered Enrique £50-£60k a week. I don’t think the wage cap (if we have one) is as low as £35k a week.
The average Premier League player wage is about £25k a week so I’m sure we will be able to attract very good players like Cabaye.

Spurs turnover is about £50 million a year higher than ours and Liverpool’s is about £100 million higher – It’s little wonder they can pay more than us at the minute but we can get there given a little time and if we keep signing players like Cabaye, Ben Arfa and Tiote

      (Quote)

  47. stuart79 they have in the last couple of summers brought in Tiote ,HBA now Cabaye those 3 players have the ability to take us forward and not forgetting Gosling , though my minds not yet made up about him .If we can bring in 2-3 of those types every summer then we will be getting up towards top 6-8 , and who says what the wage cap is ,no one except Ashley lambiarse and Pardew knows . My feeling is Ashley would pay more than 50 k per week if it was to persuade a top striker to come . The thing is and rightly so he only wants to pay players there true worth and not the stupid wages the likes of Viduka , Owen , Duff , Martins , Geremi , Xisco and the others were on .

Although Pardew says ‘wage bill’ I’m pretty sure he’s actually talking about their wage structure. Why wouldn’t we be in a position to compete with Spurs just because they have a bigger wage bill? It wouldn’t make sense.

      (Quote)

  50. Stuart – He did say that later on in the article. Just because they have a bigger wage bill it doesn’t mean we can’t compete with them on the pitch or something like that. I’m writing at the moment so I’m tied up and can’t paste the comment, but it’s roughly what was said anyway.

Axel @ 65 I have said all along that I think there is a general wage structure for squad type players, but if the right player is available I do think they would pay decent money.
Maybe not crazy money as the bindippers and others pay, but if they are only here because of the wages fuk em

      (Quote)

  53. Ashley paid big money and or wages for Smith, Collocini, Geremy etc and like someone said earlier 50 to 60k per week which I’m sure a number of players at Newcastle or on is double the premiership average and nothing to giggle at.
