The Newcastle No9.

Maybe not this good, but we need a new No9.
The greatest prize a Newcastle player could ever achieve; Newcastle No9 – following the greats and real greats.

The best players who we’ve had occupy the role are the ones who were playing for honour, pride, and most importantly, for the shirt. Jackie Milburn, Malcolm Mcdonald and Alan Shearer are all examples of this. Not only did they score regularly, they also did their country proud when called upon.

Andy Carroll’s rather ambiguous departure from Newcastle has left the great Number 9 redundant with a dramatic void in our attack being a by-product of his departure. He wore the shirt briefly after being handed the greatest privilege and declaration of respect by Chris Hughton. A local lad, born and bred in Newcastle, he understood the weight and the power of it.

Sadly he let himself be swayed by other guises. He did the shirt proud and the days of Shearer, albeit briefly, filled our memories as we watched him terrorise and run ragged Premier League defences. Suddenly though his respect for the shirt diminished and he departed for Liverpool to become their No9. I wonder if he pulls on the shirt and regrets the fact that he sees the red instead of the black and white and when he walks out at Anfield he wishes he could turn to the adoring Gallowgate fans saluting their number 9 instead?

However that is the past and this is the present. We need a new No9! It’s in our history, our blood, it’s Newcastle. The problem is that it has to be deserved. In my mind there are three main focal points for a No9 at the Newcastle:

1) Local pride; they have to understand the passion honour and love of the club the region and wear the shirt as if they are wearing the hearts of all the fans.

2) Ability; the No9 doesn’t just go to anyone it has to be earned by prowess in front of goal; leading the line with power, ability, and determination.

3) Nationality; Now this is a debatable topic as I like the rest of you wouldn’t mind David Villa taking up the No9 shirt for us. However I think the attraction and pull of the No9 would mean so much more to a fellow countryman. There is also more of an affiliation with the fans when its one of our own.

Contenders; Carroll could have been something great at Newcastle but he gave it up for other riches so it leaves the door open for others. In a dream world we would all want a local lad wearing the shirt. Why not? We had Shearer.

That’s why I don’t think any of our new signings should get the shirt; they are too fresh to the area they are most likely going to be foreign looking at our targets. They may have the ability, but do they have the strength to carry the shirt?

Now one local lad who is playing steadily for the reserves and is one of bright hopes for the future… Phil Airey. He is young untested and raw but at the moment I can’t see anyone deserving of the shirt .. So why not wait for young Airey to break into the first team and start scoring, because if he does he ticks all the boxes.

More importantly seeing him at a reserve game….The lad has got potential and there is a certain something about him that smacks of potential No9.

  4. Seems so early to announce it. But SSN also had him already in a Newcastle Home Kit. Either it’s clever editing, or he was there yesterday getting a picture taken, right.

Attacking LM is what the announcer said.

  7. Newcastle United have beaten Liverpool to the signing of French midfielder Sylvain Marveaux.

The 25-year-old had appeared on course to sign for the Anfield club, on a Bosman transfer.

But now Newcastle have nipped in to poach Marveaux and offer him a five-year deal which he now looks set to accept.

The left sided midfielder is now due on Tyneside to finalise the move, which will shock Liverpool who had presumed they had his signature in the bag.

Newcastle looked at Marveaux earlier in the year, but it was presumed they had given up when Liverpool made their move – but that was clearly not the case.

Marveaux is now set to become Newcastle’s third signing of the summer, and he is the third French-born player to sign following on from Yohan Cabaye and Demba Ba.

“It is a great coup to have signed Sylvain,” said Pardew.

“He may not be well known to many of our fans but he is a real talent.”

    ANOTHER FRENCH 😈

  15. Ya,he is very creative talent,a wonderful coup by the club, somehow i am waiting to hear why he decide to choose NUFC and not liverpool.

Seen him played at Rennes before.

Marveau has failed medicals (Liverpool apparently)

I hope theses blokes will be fit to play 😯

  17. Got to give the club some very well deserved credit. Its also much more like a NUFC signing.Totally out of the blue and kudos to them for keeping it a secret even in this age of twitter and all.

That said, just waiting to see how the supposed realists will still not be happy.

It also throws Steve Wraiths and Bobby Shinton’s claims that the club are paying peanuts right out of the window if he choose us over Liverpool despite being a free agent.

  18. couldnt agree terms with the bindippers..

so if he plays on the left,is this an end to the zog coming

  20. Reports emerged on Friday that Marveaux had failed his medical at Anfield, but he confirmed this was not the case.

“I do not want to go into details, but if I did not sign in Liverpool, because there was a contractual disagreement between the parties Thursday night,” he confirmed to L’Equipe

  24. Hitman@548, Aye was just saying that on the phone to my mate about Zog, you never know maybe Marveux is just our back up for Zog 😆

  25. Here’s a doom monger approach:

wtf are we doing? Doesn’t Ashley realise that Blatter’s 6 + 5 rule is going to be implemented this season? Can’t believe the level of idiocy of the tw@!!!

      (Quote)

  26. I posted weeks ago that info from one of the youth coaches at the club is that Sturridge is a top target, i have seen very little in the media about him so who knows, what a signing that would be.
I am so pleased we are moving early in the window instead of the usual last minute panic buys.
We look like we are going to be a quicker side with plenty of movement, Ba is proven at this level and the other 2 should be helped by the influx of French speakers, this is the first window under Ashley that we appear to be moving forward as a club and no doubt there will more comings and goings.

  27. marveaux had contractual disagreement with liverpool so we stole him under there noses lol nice bit of business

Cozy_Craig ( i think that is his name from eds blog ) was saying 3 players had checked into a hotel and were going to be annouced early next week, so interesting times ahead i think

  39. I wonder with getting these signings in early, if Jose Enrique is impressed enuff with our ambition to stay @NUFC and sign another contract.
That would be just great 😛

  40. Looks like Jose has a dilemma on his hands – if things keep going like this he would be mad not to want to be involved!

Full credit to Ashley, concentrates in a market where we are highly regarded and uses the carroll money to afford wages. Very shrewd.

Love the fact we beat Scumbagthievingpool to him aswell.

  43. Lads we still have potentially £30m what’s the reckoning that its a star studded striker??? 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  44. The caveat to all this is how many players will be leaving too?

Happy with the players who have arrived, even happy with Nolan leaving but I would like to see us have a bigger squad at the end of the transfer window as well as a better squad.

      (Quote)

  45. We can’t have much of a bigger one Stuart as it was 23 man last year plus the “young uns” but we certainly need to improve the quality in depth which was where we struggled last year.

      (Quote)

  46. Toonsy! Good morning good response on the blog! 😆

Yeah its official he signed 5 year deal and he didn’t fail a medical at Liverpool he just couldn’t agree terms! Highly rated lad we shall see

  47. I can hear the Bindippers now “how can a small relegation battling club like them beat us, the Mighty Liverpool to a player?”……..feckin love it just love it 😆 😆

  48. BB…I’d guess Toonsy will be knockin one oot now, either an article or the “other”, take your pick 😆

  49. Demba Ba – glass knee

Marveux and Best – Reoccuring groin injury?

    Gosling – fcuked knee

4 of them can be best buddies?

      (Quote)

  50. Take away the euphoria of these signings and reflect on whether all these signings will settle.

Personally I think we’ll probably see Barton, Enrique and Jonas all go – we may replace them and maybe with better players but there’s a doubt as to whether they’ll all settle. How long did it take Colo and Enrique to settle?
