Is there a message to our transfers?

Marveaux-lous business?
Well that’s three signings made in a short space of time. Quite frankly, I’m not used to it although I’m not going to grumble about it.

I mean how can you grumble? We’ve secured a highly-rated French international midfielder in the form of Yohan Cabaye, a Senegalese striker who has demonstrated that he can score goals in the Premier League in the shape of Demba Ba, and a winger that had all but signed for Liverpool only for the deal to fall through, for whatever reason, at the last minute in the guise of Sylvain Marveaux.

Well apparently you can grumble as, despite their pedigree and talent, they aren’t expensive enough for some of our fans. Personally I would call it good business, although it seems as though the transfer fund watchers are out on force after the arrival of these three players.

Quite rightly it’s been pointed out that those three players arrived for roughly the same amount as what Kevin Nolan left for. This, essentially, should leave a fairly big chunk of the Andy Carroll transfer fee ready to be used when you take off a bit for wages and so on.

This is not a bad move. We’ve been hearing for ages now, from Alan Pardew and Graham Carr, about how the club are doing their homework in the transfer market. I’m assuming that this homework is paying off in the form of these three players.

Cheapos or freebies maybe, but does it really matter? Not to me it doesn’t. If we can get quality in for little outlay then I’m all for it. Would people have preferred it had we spent say £15 million on Cabaye, Demba Ba and Marveaux? Would it make them better or worse players? In a word, no.

The way I see it is that the club have acted quickly to secure players who are high priority due to their contractual situations or due to the possibility of another club pipping us to them. Basically the club have acted quickly, but only because they will have had to or risk losing out.

It’s been pointed out that we’ve effectively not spent a penny (well in footballing terms anyway) so far this window, but isn’t that a good thing? We have cash to spend still so if something comes up we can act just as quickly. I mean did people expect us to lavish cash as soon as the window opened? If so, how many other clubs have done the same so far in this window?

The fact is that it it’s rare that you see much activity this early in the window. Players will be holding out to see what happens and who comes in for them before committing to a move anywhere, much like we are seeing with Jose Enrique right now as it happens. Later on in the window, when things start moving, we’ll have the cash, and it would appear, the speed to be able to move quickly.

So in conclusion, don’t panic. We may not have spent anything thus far, but there is still time to go and we do still have cash in the bank if the right player comes along.

Mind you, more freebies like we’ve got would be nice!

  1. I just want Ferguson and Vuckic to play a lot next season.

If we manage to get N’Zogbia, we can loan Ferguson out as we would have Zog, Raylor, Ben Arfa, Jonas and Barton who have played on the wing for us. That would let Fergie go out on loan and Vuckic is in the same boat with his position jam packed.

Signing Zog is key to us letting youngsters get loan experience.

  2. …and one minute later I see this

    cwarr07 Colin
Mevlüt Erdinç also in talks with #nufc this afternoon #nufc Both Zog & Erdinç in Newcastle

    wonder what his source is…

  3. Hold on a minute…Zog would be classed as ‘home-grown’ wouldn’t he?

Not just in England….but at the Toon 😉

  4. Amazing transfers so far, totally agree that our ability to “swoop in” has been brilliant.

Am surprised that some people are still on the “doom and gloom” bandwagon. Seems like you just can’t please some people.

If we signed Messi tomorrow, someone would probably say that he’s no good in the air. Cristiano Ronaldo, he’s not a team player, doesn’t pass enough. Torres, well, complaints warranted in this case, he’s rubbish 😉

  5. Good signings but a bit concerned that we are shopping in the bargain basement.
Not only in th bargain basement, but if we think back we signed Gosling with a knackered knee, Ben Arfa when his leg was broken, Ireland with a shagged ankle, now Marveaux has a groin problem and Demba Ba a degenerative knee problem.
No to mention Campbell who was a fat slow f&@k and Kuqi who was, well OLD! So where are we doing our shopping – PhysioRoom.com?

Bet Shola cant believe his luck

  6. John

Doesn’t he play for Wales though? They have to be English players. Proper daft like it will never happen IMO. The powerful people like Ferguson will protect us. 😉

  7. @ Moreno I believ he would. They have to be trained here for 3 years under the age of 21 which N’zogbia has been.

      (Quote)

  8. Forgot to mention – medical staqff got the dates wrong forBen Arfa, Ireland and Gosling, and Campbell and Kuqi – actually became older and fatter.

Hope we do a better job with the new lot

  9. afan – It won’t happen. As soon as someone complains to the EU they will rule it unconstitutional and they are buggered basically.
The only thing they could do is limit the amount of non-EU (like African and South American players)

  10. Fck me, if we get Nzogbia and Erdinc I’ll be wanking myself off all day – might even stretch to Ashley if we get a couple more in! 😯

  12. How do lads and lasses, been following the blog for a while now and only just signed up. Used to follow Ed’s blog under the same user name ‘Mongo’.

I think the Gervinho bid is pointless he will be joining Paedo Wenger, but I can believe the one for Zog and I hope that comes off. Get a replacement for Enrique, a couple of more strikers and we should be looking quite good for next season.

Anyone else see that **** on Skysports about Seville wanting Colo? £7m? Your having a laugh!

  13. Ever thought that cwarr might just start rumours and then take all the bets that people stick on betfair?

  14. Stuart79 – Some dude from Sky has ensured none of us will be *cough cough* celebrating today.

  16. Not sure I should be saying this so soon into the summer market but here goes anyway. Firstly you should know that I have been a mag totally against the new owner so much so that I gave up my season ticket a couple of years ago and have only been bak once since then and that was a freebie.
I am staring to get a strange feeling that Ashley is either going to stay or build it up and flog the club, to be honest I’m starting to believe in him albeit a very small amount.
Now before you say I have changed my mind I really only have to point back to 1 thing in my memory and that was when we played AVFC away wand were sent down. That day I curse them all and mumbled under many a swear wood rant for Ashely to clear them all out and by enlarge he has. Think that I like is that he seems to have some structure and standards to what he is doing and I like that alot

    2 things:

Paedo Wenger – 😆 That’s why Walcott and Wilshire won’t ever be bought….they are damaged goods.

Seville wanting Colo? £7m? Your having a laugh! – Totally agree, one thing we know about Ashley is that he will see it as a loss from what he payed for Colo….plus he’s a better player now.

  19. cwarr’s a liar, simple

He just makes **** up all the time. Reliable as the Sunday back pages for “inside info”.

    Pay no attention.

We might well buy Zog but if we do this cwarr muppet will have nowt to do with it.

  20. Love your transfer fund watchers bit, For me we’d ideally get all our players for free and never have to pay for one. I don’t understand how people love to demand big money signings then condemn them if there **** and laud small fee players who perform well like tiote.

      (Quote)

  21. Hope the Matuidi thing is true, he looks a fooking class player. Imagine a midfield 3 of Matuidi, Tiote and Cabaye infront of them and then a flexible attacking 3 with the likes of Ba, Benny, Marveux, Jonas, Ferguson Erdic. The pace and dribbling ability of some of those players would totally destroy some of the slower defenses in the prem.

  22. I rate colo no point in selling him hes a good player get a great left back like jos’e and a great right back like jos’e and well punish teams in a heartbeat like,i bet wenger quaking in his boots about first game cant wait. 😆

  23. @ 95,

I also think Ashley is getting it right, he’s gotten it wrong enough time’s and as a successful business man he just ain’t gonna let it happen to many more times 🙂

  36. El Toro @61 ,i think he would be an excellent signing on a free ,Pardew has worked with him before and turned him into a very good player at the time . He would improve the squad and as you say he is free , better him to come on and replace Tiote when needed than Smith .

      (Quote)

  37. Considering Benny, Marveux and Jonas what would be the point of spending so much money on N’Zogbia? Also it would reduce the chances for Ferguson to practically zero.

Spend the money where it’s needed IMHO. Like full-backs another striker and right-winger.

Maybe they had a good working relationship and Doubtfire will nick him from under our noses . There is no doubts they will be hating it that we are so active in the transfer market and they are only selling 😀

Like someone said before that Warris is probably a conman trying to get people to bet on N’Zogbia, either he is betting against it on betfair or he touts for the bookies or something. Mark Douglass says he has asked the club and they said the N’Zogbia rumours are ‘pure fantasy’.

  45. One concern I have is the derby coming so soon in the season.

Lads like Nolan, Barton etc know what it meant and how important it is….will all this French lot?

The Zog will have to gee them up for it in French when he signs

      (Quote)

  46. @Moreno

Barton might stay yet. + we still have S Taylor and Shola’s plenty of pride there. Have u seen the S’land team of late..

      (Quote)

  47. Aye I agree with Mark. Do Sunderland have a team at the minute? They’ve lost about eight players and have brought one in. Combine that with the fact that they generally leave their business until late in the window and we could be playing against their ragtag team of no hopers, minus the better ones that didn’t belong to them anyway 😆
