Don’t panic about or ‘home grown’ quota!

Tim Krul is a quirk of the home grown rule.
The arrival of three players at St James’ Park has been welcomed, but it’s also raised a few concerns.

One of those concerns is about how the arrival of these three foreigners plus the departure of an Englishman in the shape of Kevin Nolan will impact on our ability to comply with the home grown ruling that came into force at the start of last season. The message from me is to not worry.

Why? Well we are covered basically and will have no concerns staying within the rules, even after our continental shopping trip draws to a close. You all know what the definition of home grown is by now surely? Well if you don’t here is the rule according to the Premier League handbook:

A home-grown player will be defined as one who, irrespective of his nationality or age, has been registered with a club affiliated to the Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday (or the end of the Season during which he turns 21).

Basically we have to name a squad of up to 25 players. Those players can be any age but if they are under the age of 21 then they don’t have to be named in the squad but can still be eligible to play for the first team. A recent example I guess would be Andy Carroll. He wasn’t named in our original 25-man squad but the gypsy still played for us.

Out of the squad of 25 there must be eight home grown players included. Home grown doesn’t mean that they have to be English or anything like that – it merely means that a player must have been registered with a club in either England or Wales for three years before they turn 21. Tim Krul is a good example of non-English home grown player.

So who do we have on the book at the moment that can fill the spaces? Well, let’s take a look.

NUFC home grown players.

Steve Harper
Fraser Forster
Tim Krul
Danny Simpson
Tamas Kadar
Mike Williamson
Steven Taylor
James Perch
Joey Barton
Dan Gosling
Danny Guthrie
Alan Smith
Wayne Routledge
Ryan Taylor
Shola Ameobi
Leon Best

Now that’s 16 home grown players. Granted we may lose some over the summer, but are we really going to lose eight of them? There is also nothing to say that we won’t be bringing anymore in. Neil Taylor would be another home grown player to add to the list should his proposed move from Swansea go ahead.

So you see, there is no need to panic. Just because we are adding a bit of gallic flair it doesn’t mean that we are suddenly flying close to the rules. We have plenty of home grown players to pick from, and we only need eight.

As Mr Mainwaring would say: Don’t panic!

  3. Nah we not;

Forster; simmo; saylor; ntaylor; ferguson; barton; gosling; best

    All potential first teamers?

  4. Can only see us losing 6 of them max. Saying that, you never know with this lot in charge 🙄

    Joey
    Raylor
    Perch
    Smudge
    Forster
    Best

  5. Liam @5. Of those 8, one might be leaving and one hasn’t even got here. Of the others, only 2 appear in most people’s team formations.

The 6+5 rule requires (and I quote from Wikipedia) ‘At the beginning of each match, each club must field at least six players eligible to play for the national team of the country of the club.’

    And that’s for every game.

Fortunately, if it did happen it would be phased in. I doubt it will happen, but it’d be scary if it did.

  6. Bris – True; other those realistically Krul, simmo, saylor and maybe ferguson are realistic; barton would be if he stayed.
When does that rule potentially apply from?
That would dramatically weaken the premier league

  9. Well spoke to a mate from coventry and he chatted with sturridge mate and reckoned he was going to NUFC for talks after U21 tournament. mind you could be a load of rubbish 😐

  10. Just read it bisvegas.

Looks like it contravenes EU law.

An increase on the home grown players would be better. It would help to narrow the gap of the elite in the premier league.

Why wouldnt we get Sturridge? the only teams ive seen linked with him our mid table teams like Bolton, Everton and Newcastle

  15. I agree BSN9 but initially i think it will weaken the premier league;

but looking at how ruddy useless the U21’s are what hope is the future for england? They were shocking.

  16. NI Toon….Bolton and Everton would take him on loan and guarantee him a starting place which I think Chelsea would insist on, I don’t think we would give that guarantee, nor should we. Just my opinion of course 😉

  17. Liam…I don’t go on tw@tter but as far as I can gather he seems to be someone who “tweets”(?) every rumour going then obviously one in ten might come off, that one in ten are what some choose to remember and therefore take everything he says as gospel 😕 ……I think 😀

  21. Ta for the clarification. So we don’t need to worry about the home-grown rule, but perhaps about any new version of the 6-nationals rule that may get introduced. Personally I agree with BS9 and hope it does come in.

The problem with it is illustrated by Sturridge. I thought he was pretty poor last night; awful positioning and rarely successful in beating a player. On the rare occasion he did get sight of goal he immediately grabbed his banjo and the cow was safe.

And yet – he costs more than Ba and is his own biggest fan. Sadly, such is the state of the English ‘talent list’.

All that said – I am genuinely worried about what team will start next season… or whether it will be a team at all. Looking more like a collection of gallic strangers by the day.

Still – not panicking or grumbling yet; I’m sure AP is well aware of the problem, and you can’t complain about his progress so far this window.

  28. I’m going to stick my neck out and say we should hold on to Simpson, who did way better than people give him credit for. We need him, Willo, Guthrie and the other younger, English-speaking squad members to carry on the function of Nolan (and possibly Barton) and provide the consistency, passion and backbone of the team.

Without them we’ll have no chance of repeating the Arsenal comeback or any of the many remarkable turnarounds we saw last season. It sounds old-fashioned, but that kind of thing is a British trait, and definitely not a French one.

  29. @batty

That link relates to Barton and Jose going to Arsenal for £7m.

The Toon are in a precarious position as they stand to lose them for nothing next season.

Some are expecting huge bids to come in but I don’t see it.

The players hold all the cards and a nominal fee may have to be accepted.

      (Quote)

  30. Howey’s a ****. Does he think an owner should just give his manager carte blanche with no restrictions? Does he think he should just sign the cheques no matter how stupid the terms of the contract?

Nolan got greedy and tried it on from a point of weakness, not realising that AP has a boss just like everyone else. If he’s annoyed at AP not backing him, he should ask why. It’s not just because AP has to operate within constraints, it’s because Nolan was asking for something that couldn’t be justified.

Howey doesn’t seem to even consider that side of things.

      (Quote)

  31. Yeah Bobby but we will hold on for higher bids til 31st Aug.
This MIGHT up the price, but I dont think we will accept £7M 👿

I’d rather spend all the remaining time to try and convince them to stay 😆

      (Quote)

  32. I don’t think anyone’s really in for Barton. The backlash from fans would be huge, and why would any other club offer him more than we will? It makes total sense to keep the contract short, and Wenger’s not known for being daft on these things.

I think – and hope – Barton’s still in black and white next season. And that he shuts up. A lot.

      (Quote)

  33. Whumpie

When did the board ever give a **** about making decisions that would cause a backlash from the fans?

Your theory on Barton does not make sense .

How can he leave for a nominal fee if Barton says he’s running his contract down?

There’s also no offer on the table for Barton.”

When it is reported that we are after a player, it is bollocks and we would never spend money on a player like that… I find it funny what we choose to believe and that which we do not….

And for the 6+5 rule… No way it will happen too many $$$$$$$$$$$ involved… sponsors, TV rights etc etc…. people want to watch the big name players playing in the most exciting league in the world…Not a load of second rate championship players making up numbers..
