Phil Airey to Hibs on loan?
The Chronicle is reporting that Phil Airey is the subject of interest from SPL outfit Hibernian as former Mag assistant Colin Calderwood looks to plunder his old club to strengthen his current club.

Why not take James Perch instead? Please take James Perch. He’s itching for first team football remember! Anyway, the name of Phil Airey has been mentioned but it’s merely a bit of tinsel to decorate this article as I want to focus on something else that was said in that very same Chronicle piece.

Basically it seems as though a lot of our younger players will be farmed out on loan next season. It should, in theory, give them a better education when it comes to life as a footballer, according to John Carver who said this today:

“The reserve team is just an extension of the Academy. You can only learn so much in the reserves.”

“Playing in League One or the Championship, you really get to grips with what everyday football is all about. The manager has made it clear that is what we want to do with our youngsters.”

So players will be loaned out then? About bloody time! It’s pointless having all of these kids if they aren’t going to play, so why not give them a chance to go and play somewhere else? It’s what most clubs do, yet we’ve been slow on the uptake. Shocking really, when you consider how much of a positive impact it could have on a younger player.

Who will end up going out though? Well anyone I guess. The likely candidates are going to be the ones that are close to the first team but not too close, highly rated, and perhaps don’t get any real benefit in the ressies. Phil Airey is one as he rips the reserves up and scores for fun so it’s gone beyond being a test for him, Michael Richardson could be another given how highly Alan Pardew has been speaking of him.

Loaning players out could also benefit those who have lost a lot of time playing football through injury, like Tamas Kadar and Haris Vuckic. Personally, I’m all for it.

Whoever gets the nod to go on loan, fear not. I like to keep up to speed with how our kids are getting along so me and the lads will be keeping you updated on their progress whilst they are away at their temporary clubs. We’ll be reporting via observations, reports and from speaking to fans of each respective club to try and give you guys the lowdown on the loan stars.

It’s just a matter of seeing who will get the nod to go now I guess. Who would you send? Personally, rather than just give up on Nile Ranger I’d like us to send him somewhere on loan first to see if it gives him the kick up the **** he sorely needs!

Comments welcome 😉

  1. nice title- how long have you been saving that one? 😉

I am a big supporter of loaning out the yongsters that really don’t have a shot at the first team this year. Makes it so much easier to follow their progress and possibly even see a match or two. Happy to hear the blog will be providing updates.

  2. mad not to loan out the younger guys… it will speed up their development and certainly sort the men out from the boys!
Also I am not sure that you should give up on Ranger, Toonsy, if he finds out about your lack of support, he might come round your place and bust a cap! 😀

  3. I would loan out youngster for full season loans. Give them a feel for regular football. However, Maybe only loan out Kadar and Vuckic for a shorter periode as they are close to the full squad??? Wouldnt mind seeing them given the chance at first team this year they seem ready.

  4. The only problem with loaning players out is they become attached and want to stay. Their managers want to buy, and we could lose them. OK they can come back better players, but they mayhave their heads turned. Tozer, forster, lualua

  5. I cant understand why we havnt been loaning out any decent youngster we have already.

think any of the guys that are getting some game time(Ferguson, Vuckic and Ranger) should stay at the club and get a bigger role within the squad, these are the players that are at the right age and ability to step up from the ressies.

  6. @4… but at least the club gets to see what the true potential of the lads involved…. worth the risk I reckon…

  7. too harsh on james Perch – i dont think he’s as bad as everybody makes out – he’s a good defender – just not a dynamic right back (mind neither is danny Simpson).
i feel that he’s comfortable accross the defence – and thats one of the reasons why the club arent looking for another central defender – him and kadar will be all we need to cover injuries – with Tavernier at a push.

  8. If one of our players is out on loan and they are doing well, what is the timeframe for getting them back to the club should we need them? Am I correct in thinking that the temporary club is responsible for the players wages while they are there?

  9. @ Tatty, I think Perch also has a catch and release clause in his contract? 😀

Sorry I will apologize for that one now….

  10. @9

There is alot of different ways to do loans

You can loan them out all season pay their wages and recall them when you want or let the other team pay their wages which would probably mean we coudnt recall them.

  11. Whats your opinions on sammy ?? looked like a better prospect than his brother did at that age !! worth a couple of sub shots I guess !

  12. lads a guy I was justing working on was telling me how he is finding it real tight because they bought their dream house last yr but still haven’t sold their last one.
Which got me thinking about MA I cant really see him buying too many players until we get shot of some, and tbh I can understand it as there is is risky buying say a top striker, so we have Ba as the 2nd and kepp one other between Best, Shola and lovens and maybe Ranger or Airy if we are real stuck through injuries.
But if we go ahead and get the top striker we need now, what happens if we cant shift 2 from Best, Shola and Lovens, that would be a hell of a lot of money wasted, paying players that we dont need ?

  13. @blip

Thats true ! I would also look to keep Lua Lua rather then loan him out as he managed to beat more players and put some decent balls in then jonas usually does in his sub shot at the end of the season !

    That’s what it’s all about

    Oooooooohhhhh Shola Ameobi

Getting Shola on my 3rd kit, first time I have ever done it. True toon legend Wor Shola

  15. **** phone 😡

I meant to add, the risk is paying out a lot in wages for a player who won’t really have a place in the team, or not risking buying another striker until one of them has gone and risking on them doing enough.

  16. On loans, usually when players go to a league one club for example, the premier league team will pay the wage but they’ll want assurances over game time which isn’t normally an issue. If there is a recall clause put in then its usually 24 hours notice but it can be different depending on each deal. Basically there is a deal to pretty much suit every move 😆

Just popped on Ed’s blog and seen mention of Mario Gomez. I think bobby’s reality train needs to make a one-off stop there. No chance of that. Not even worth considering 😕

  18. Toonsy it is a risk either way but I think I know what risk MA will take. Just think we’re wasting atleast £5mil a yr on Xisco and Smith ? 👿 what a waste

is that the article were half of them said they woudlnt want drogba if we could somehow get him? lol bunch of morons.

  20. Oh come to think of it,Norwich City promoted to PL right?

Loan Forster to them. Great chance to see how he perform in PL. 😉

  21. Yes, loan out a few we can afford to loan out. Ideally just til January initially though. I wouldn’t loan out Kadar unless we get more defenders.

Understandably clubs who get players on loan often end up wanting to sign that player though, and – especially for the fee we would get – I wouldn’t sell Lua Lua, Airey, Vuckic etc etc! A 3 month loan and we’ll see if we can afford to let the player out for the rest of the season.

Totally off topic (more “jumpers for goalposts anorak corner”), does anyone else think Fabregas to be over-rated?! I think he’s worth at most 20M for any club. Parker is overrated too; more like 6M than 10M for a 30 year-old who doesn’t offer much offensively (as he didn’t for us) though I think he has a good attitude.

  22. p.s – I wouldn’t be so ready to knock Perch off his perch – I’m not saying he’s going to be a world beater, but definitely a useful squad member/sub. Quite a lot we’re knocking Colo a couple of years ago, not expecting his turn around!

  23. As a captain Fabregas isn’t great,

He is an amazingy player though. His vision and passing are second to none in the league. If Henderson is worth what Liverpool have paid for him, then Barca will get fabregas at an absolute steal

  24. Bet this depends on whether Calderwood joins Hughton at Birmingham – I’d like to see Airey get a loan deal for someone in the Championship.

  25. Maybe loan out Airey for three months for him to get some football and then integrate him into the team, I would loan out Sammy Ameobi though.

I think Ranger is going to be sold, that’s the impression I get as I think that the club haven’t been happy with his behaviour

  26. On the last article and a bit of this one. I don’t know what people are complaining about. SO FAR we have campbell, kuqi and nolan gone. Campbell-36-8apps,Kuqi-34-6 apps and nolan i’ll admit a blow-29 years old. Some saying ireland but i wouldn’t count him 2 apps and only a loan. And replaced that with cabaye-25-french international key member of the french champions side. Marveaux-25- who liverpool are spitting about not getting and ba-26-scored 7 in 14 for a side that finished bottom of the league and cost 6 mill less than 6 months ago for no outlay. Regardless of how much your hoping we spend less than 35 mill so you can stick the knife in this is good business. As much as people hate it, football is business unless you want to be pompy or gretna? We have improved the quality and age of the squad that ended the season and the international transfer window hasn’t even opened yet. Toonsy and a few others i don’t know why use bother trying to use common sense on here, annoys me and stops me posting regularly. I no we still havn’t bought a striker to replace carroll from january directly but just a little stat from premioer league website. Last year carroll 13/29 ba 7/14. Carroll was injured but ba was in a new country and in the worst team in the prem.

  27. Should reiterate, using common sense towards others. Your use of common sense is refreshing… Haha.

  28. I suppose the argument for loaning out these players could be financial potential as well. Put the players that may be determined to be surplus out where there performance can be evaluated. If they perform well, it certainly doesn’t hurt their valuation come transfer windows. It may be an opportunity to cash in on some of the players as well. Granted, I’d hate to see the good performers signed away as I am sure we could use them as well. Just saying from a financial stand point that could be another benefit to loans.

  29. While it can only be good to loan the youngsters out , i think it should be to teams from a level that will improve them . Would loaning a player to a SPL team really do any good ? Pardew even said that its not a good standard of football . Loaning to a championship side or another premiership team is what we should be looking at .

  30. Axel – Sometimes it’s not about quality of football. Improvement will come naturally with playing games and testing themselves competitively, but the experience of doing so will help them out. The day to day life of a footballer etc etc

  31. That, and if we have a player who is good enough to be loaned to a Premier League team he is likely to be in or around our first team IMO 🙂
