Newcastle NOT interested in Sturridge?

No interest in Sturridge.
According to the back page of The Chronicle it would appear that Newcastle have no interest in signing Daniel Strurridge.

This was leaked in an early edition of the publication which I struggled to read, but it’s up now in all it’s glory. Readable or not, if you take away all of the fluff and tinsel all that is left is the glaring fact that NUFC are not even considering entering the race to sign arguably the hottest young, English striker on the block at the moment.

In my view it’s a damning indictment of the transfer policy in place currently at St James’ Park. The policy is packaged as one that will not see us splash cash on players that will only lose value and only buy young, hungry players that will improve. Sturridge would fit the latter mould, no doubt.

At a rumoured £15 million it would be a steal as he has proven that he can score goals in the Premier League. It’s a no-brainer. So why aren’t we interested? Why oh why are we not even enquiring about him?

Before I go on too much of a rant, it’s worth pointing out that it is The Chronicle and it only “understands” the stance on Sturridge, but it certainly doesn’t paint a great picture does it? We need a goalscorer – Sturridge is a goalscorer, that even fits the criteria of our apparent transfer policy. Baffling.

Being honest, it’s probably the price tag that has put us off even looking at Sturridge. As one blogger said this morning “eight-figure syndrome”. As well as our players being young and hungry, they must also not cost over £5 million or something ridiculous like that. I don’t mind that so much, but if a player comes along who is worth it then I’d like to think we’d at least try and sign him.

Apparently not.

  1. Why don’t we just go for him?…It’s not like we don’t have the money is it! He’s proven in this league and he can score goals week in week out, but we would rather sign someone from a foreign league who would be cheaper. 🙄

  2. Report for you posted Andrew says sturridge available for 6mil? That cant be right can it? Unless that refers to a loan fee

  3. Thats commitment for ya toonsy! 😛

And how bad is my grammer on post 3? Fail 😳

  4. Hope it isn’t true.

If you sell a player for 35M you need to spend some of that money on a decent quality replacement.

    Where’s the ambition?

The only reason I’m not more annoyed is that it’s a Chronicle piece … so it’s probably a load of bollox.

  5. Hate Ashley and his little yes man Pardew. they are both idiots. Why on earth are we not interested in the best talent that england has to offer. Only club with a billionaire owner who doesnt spend over 5million on anyone. We are just going to be like his awful sports shops. cheap and nasty.
Jelly and icecream when ashley dies is all i will say!

  6. I’m not bothered, he may be a good goalscorer but one thing he is not, and that’s a team player.

That’s not a slight on his character, what i mean is he often keeps the ball and don’t see a pass when there are better options. That’s more of a flaw in his game which may improve over time as he is still young.

Although he was scoring goals for bolton, statistically it was rather interesting to see how bolton form has dipped and how they slid down the table soon as Sturridge moved into their team. He kind of interrupted the partnership of davies and elmander

  7. Lads would it not be better to wait till near the end of the transfer window before ranting and raving, because of something that is wrote in the Chron. I dont think we would pay big money for someone like Sturidge, but I will wait just to see if the Fatman does surprise us.

      (Quote)

  8. Dave – I agree, to a point. I’ve always said id wait until the window ends, and probably a bit more. Sturridge is a goalacorer though, and should be gettable so why we aren’t even apparently looking is beyond me 😕

      (Quote)

  9. Yes Sturridge is a young hungry player but if we pay 20 mill for him now what are the odds he will
A – Justify that price tag
B – ever be worth that or more again?

The answer to both is most likely never and thats why Ashley wont buy him. Does that clear up your confusion Toonsey?

  12. Yeah, no need to hit the panic button… If the chronicle ran a story saying that we were chasing Ronaldo, you would laugh it off as utter rubbish…. So why get all fired up about a story saying we are not chasing Sturridge. The 35m we got from the Andy Carroll sale is starting to burn a hole in some fans pockets… I almost wish we didn’t have it.. It is making some fans delusional… 😯
The club has made all it’s dealings very secretive, so how the f*ck would the chronicle know whats going on…

  13. The big problem for me in all of this is the season starts on 13 august and the transfer window closes on 31 august. You could lose three games before you assemble your squad. Absolute crazy. A multi million pound industry run shambolically.
Squads should be assembled by the first game and we should tell uefa to jack off

  14. How very dare Mike Ashley, how very dare him!!
Why the f*ck isn’t he spending our 35million on the players we want 👿 … This is an outrage!

  16. Charlie – no not really. First off I’m a football fan and want to see us going for the best players we can attract.

Secondly, justifying a price tag. There is as much chance of a £20 million player justifying their price as their is of a £1million player surprising us. The only difference is risk.

Sometimes you just gotta take a risk. I’m not against us testing cheap players, but how long is going to go on for? Sturridge would improve our team yet we aren’t even interested. Take the player name out of it if you like, but it says a lot to me anyway.

  17. Ive only ever posted one bit of transfer gossip and it was Sturridge, bollocks and double bollocks, they were definitely looking at him!
God knows who we will bring in up front but after Kuqi i am prepared for the worst.

  19. Aussie – Is it delusional to want a goalscorer at NUFC? this window is starting to form an all to familiar path. Usually I’m an optimist, maybe I’m having a bad day? 😆

Pardon me for wanting the team to improve, and how dare I ask that just over half the money received for our old striker be spent on a new one that would cover up a glaring deficiency within the team 😳

  23. Hitman – I don’t care about the No9. They can retire it for all I care now. It’s just a number for the fans that means nowt to anyone else. A player could wear 382 on the back of his shirt as long as he was doing the biz on the pitch.

  24. Toonsy,I really feel like the papers love taking advantage of our innate desire for good things to happen for our beloved team. So when bad news blips on the radar, they are over it like a rash. I too would love for Sturridge to be lining up for us but I refuse to get carried away with any press releases. I agree wholeheartedly with your points but I am not going to get angry with our management until something has been officially confirmed or denied.
My post at 25 was aimed at fans who demand that the money be spent, come hell or high water….

      (Quote)

  25. Aussie – The problem is that we never hear anything official forcing us towards rumours and hearsay. I still maintain that we’ll end up with some decent players, but I do believe we won’t be getting that top class of player that will take us to the next level

      (Quote)

  26. When did we all fall in line with our board by agreeing that seeling high and buying low is the way forward? Ambitious clubs put every penny they can, and more, into the playing staff, we are the other way around with Pardew being given the bare minimum to survive ( hopefully).
4th best supported club in the EPL, but probably the worst supported by their owner.

      (Quote)

  27. Would love sturridge to come in , think he would be perfect for us , but I can see us spending that sort of money on one player. I hope I am wrong.

Yeah it is frustrating as a fan kinda knowing we have alot of money in the bank but no apparent sign of us trying to spend money. But would people be happier if we had spent money on signing Ba and Marveaux rather than getting them on free? I think we are going to have to get use to be prudent with our money. I know its not exciting as say under sheppard where you knew big money was going to be spent. But I think we are going to have a good team next year and with a bit of luck we could be chasing europe or have a decent cup run

      (Quote)

  28. I reckon we might be surprised Toonsy…. Pardew mentioned players that will get bums off seats and he is a man of his word 😯
In all seriousness, I think we will get a player that no one suspects… Not knowing our business, is driving the press mad.. So they will speculate away until something is announced..

      (Quote)

  29. Robert – I don’t mind that so much, the buying low selling high bit. But what I do expect is for the bar to be raised on occasion. It’s great saying we want young hungry players, but what is actually meant is players who we can get for next to nothing as we’ll have no interest in the ones that cost a bit of money.

      (Quote)

  30. don’t rate Sturridge to be honest, same reason as none of the top 6 clubs are looking to sign him, he needs to many chances to score
I’d have him for 5 million max

      (Quote)

  31. What i meant was the rigid purchase policy, big money doesnt guarantee success but as we have a fortune sitting from player sales, we should be aiming for Sturridge who fits all the criteria they want apart from a decent, and i would argue a fair fee.

      (Quote)

  32. And just to make things worse for me, Ameobi gives an interview in the Chron saying he fears no one! Well after 71 goals in 11yrs, i dont suppose defences fear him either, i fear seeing his name on the team sheet, my heart sinks like a stone.

      (Quote)

  33. I don’t think we should buy him, yes he’s scored goals in the premier league but would it be worth it if pay a lot of money for him and then he doesn’t produce the goods?

I think a loan deal would be the best option with the view to buy him, whether chelsea are willing to do that I don’t know. But a loan would see how he worked with the other players in our squad

      (Quote)

  34. There are other strikers, probably some who are better, that won’t cost as much as Sturridge. I’d like him, for sure, but I wouldn’t bend over to get him.

We’ve just picked up one “EPL proven” striker, with a similar record to Sturridge’s from last season, and we got him for a signing on fee.

I agree with Aussie Magpie; this desperation to make sure that every single penny of the Carroll money is spent is ridiculous. I couldn’t give two hoots what we spend, as long as we buy the right players.

Try to remember, fellas, the window doesn’t shut for over two months and we don’t kick a competitive ball for a month and a half. It would be nice to have next season’s squad assemble for pre season, but a lot of clubs will hang on to their players until the end of the window to try and get teh best deals.

If we don’t get Sturridge, we don’t get Sturridge. Someone else will buy him and he could turn out to be a waste of a lot of millions (a la Michale Owen). We’ll get someone else. There really is no point in crying about it.

And for the record – Colo cost over £10m, so we do know the owner will part with that sort of cash, if he’s been convinced the player’s worth it.

  36. The player to watch is Demba Ba.. the guy is a real handful on the park… make no bones about it he will bring us goals next season… Why can’t he be considered as a top class signing like Sturridge?
Is it because we got him for next to nothing? 😕

      (Quote)

  37. Idk… Is he really proven?
And don’t we have a history of bad luck with londoners?
Everytime I’ve seen him, he’s looked to me as a bit of a prat. I think he would fold in the pressure of the “fish bowl”.
If it was my 15 mil, I wouldn’t pay it, 8/9mil tops for me.

      (Quote)

  38. Aussie Mag @ 55 I think people would be happier if we spent £5 to £10 million on him. I think its people perception is on value. If something cost more it must be better…….Im not saying everyone is like that
