Is there anyone we can pick from the Championship?

Is there where we should be looking?
Most discussions between Newcastle at the moment, appear to be concerning the £35 million.

It seems as if a great number of fans would actually have been happier about our three first signings, had they come at a greater cost. Personally I find this totally ridiculous, as I think one should never turn away a player if a real bargain presents itself – especially in today’s financial climate.

Those are also same fans, that want us to spend big, and preferably buy proven Premier League players, instead of doing our shopping abroad and, God forbid, having a look at lower league players.

As much as I would like us to have a strong core of English talent in our team, I certainly wouldn’t want us to be spending “silly” money on young prospects just because they’re English. Let’s face it, the amounts that English players go for these days hardly reflect the actual quality they have when compared to players from abroad. A hypothetical example – with £20m at your disposal, would you spend it all on Jordan Henderson, or would you rather bring in a player like Rafael Van der Vaart for £8m (as Spurs did last summer) and a couple of others?

If we want to get some more English players to our club, they would have to be either youth players or plying their trade in the Championship or lower.

It could be very interesting to assemble a list of the most talented players in the Championship aged 25 or younger. Swansea snapped up the top-scorer, Danny Graham, for £3 million, so if we were interested in, let’s say, Max Gradel or Lewis McGugan they should definitely be affordable, and maybe they could add more than just depth and actually turn out to be real gems. Joleon Lescott, Kyle Walker, Gareth Bale and Theo Walcott (the list is endless) also made the step up, didn’t they?

I would be in favour of going through the Championship – what do you think?

Thank to Funkness for submitting this for all to have a ponder about. It seems quite relevant given our alleged interest in Shane Long plus our confirmed interest in Neil Taylor who made his name in the Championship.

  1. Good article Funkness.
British players in the prem are usually at the top of their game. The ones that are for sale are usually in decline, yet still demand high salaries and transfer costs.
Surely it makes sense to try and bring in younger lads that are still on the up so to speak, and help to develop them more into prem standard. If this fails then there is still a chance to recoup some money on them by selling them back to a championship club. An example of this is Wayne Routledge.
I would much rather the club spent more money this way. The problem is tho that it becomes difficult to keep these players when they hit top form and other clubs come sniffing. ie Judas.
If we want to become a top prem club again, then its no good becoming a feeder club and we need to be keeping our better players when/if they make a name for themselves.
Thats why its easy for manure, because they are so well established at the top, that they are like a player magnet. 👿 But it has taken them years to get where they are.

  2. Anyone that grafts for the team and is good enough to get into it is a good signing. Unfortunately, I firmly believe that players like Tiote will be sold in a few years for big money so we’ll never really be able to build a team round them. We are basically a stepping stone to the big clubs now.

I know this echoes what Mr Boots said above, but I agree with him 😉

  3. First things first, this is my first posting so not too harsh please? 😉
    Great write up lad!
I think some players from the leccy league could do us a job. I know I may get slated for this but I feel as if Shane Long is worth a punt. A lot of people haven’t seen this lad play a full match. Great work rate, fast, eye for goal and his overall ability is enough for me. I think £7m will be enough.
Nicky Maynard – Not too sure what the crack is with this fella but he’s a great player IMO. he’s quick, strong, fantastic right foot and he again had an eye for goal. Something NUFC need! Not as marquee as some would likeat around £2m-£5m.
Peter Whittingham – Right sided winger from Cardiff. As far as I’m aware he hasn’t moved and he wants too. He is a right sided player with a left foot, like Jonas, has been played out of position but still played fantastic. Along with Barton 😆 he has pace, picks out a pass, fantastic delivery and would love to move to a big club like Newcastle. Not sure on contract situation but £3m is enough I feel.
Leon Best – Yes, I know he isn’t in the lower leagues but I don’t see why he is up for sale. Back end of our promotion campaign he couldn’t hit barn door with a banjo. Then in the biggest league in the world he bangs in 6 in 12?! Surely can’t be a fluke as he looked consistent.
The point being, yes, we need to look for reinforcements. I’m not going to shy away from that, but you have to look at Best and think, why not? I’d give him a full season and see what the lad can do.
    Here’s hoping! HWTL!

  4. Where do people get this from with regard to the 35m. Most people like myself are questioning the validity of the statements that come from the likes of Lamsarse about spending part of the 35m on wages agents fees, wages and grass seeds! Stating that the freebies were not free after all and that they had spent significant amounts of money. This is total bollocks and what is upsetting the Newcastle faithful. I would dispute what you are saying if you can get a bargain great, but if you want to move forward you will also have to pay money for top class players because you cannot expect to pick up bargains all of the time. Too add one or two top class players to the squad even if you have to pay big money is not too much to expect is it. Or has ashley brainwashed everybody into thinking that paying more than 5m is a sin!

      (Quote)

  5. Freddie, I agree. We had the makings of a top class side before the Carroll sale, and to me actually selling him was a lack of ambition. All these ‘free’ signings should have been adding bulk to the squad as it was very thin to start with.

If we hadn’t sold Carroll, I have to assume (due to comments from Owl Heed) that we wouldn’t have been able to afford even these ‘free’ signings.

All I want to see is an improvement to the squad. If the Frenchies set the world alight then fair play to Fatty and Owly, but at the moment I can’t really see any improvement to the squad as a whole.

      (Quote)

  6. FS – perhaps you could give us an example of a top class player you would like to buy. A striker for example, that would back up your arguement.
Not getting at you, just want to see your point. Thanks

      (Quote)

  7. If you need an example of a top class striker, that you have to pay big bucks for and on top of that pay big wages, look no further than Owen.
Now tell me how that moved us forwards ❓ because I cant see it.

Been there seen it done it, bought the shirt. 👿

      (Quote)

  8. I personally would like to buy agbonlahar from Villa. He has bags of pace is strong and would go alongside Ba big man little man. I think they could get him for about 10m and I think he would improve on what we have got. just my opinion!

      (Quote)

  9. I’d like to see a significant chunk of of the £35m spent on a couple of good signings, just to change my belief that Tubby and the Owl have strictly limited ambitions for the club and are basically taking the p*ss. However, I don’t want to see them doing what Liverpool are currently doing – offering double a player’s true value just to make sure they get them. As it stands, I believe we have significantly strengthened the squad so far in this window by only spending peanuts and so, if they would just dip into the Carrol pot to pull off another couple of decent signings, we could really kick on this season.

      (Quote)

  10. Owen was somebody that was finished when we bought him. I agree that was a big mistake but it does`nt now mean to say you have got to be afraid to make the occasional move into the transfer market to pay big money for the right player

      (Quote)

  11. You have to ask yourself what NUFC can offer these so called top players.
We have been in decline and yes we are now on the up (hopefully 😕 ) but not in europe/CL. Not even fighting at the top end of the lge – yet 😉
So all that leaves is money and yes we all know to well that they will come for that, but not bust agut for it.
Thats why I would rather buy some top championship players who have a fire in their bellies and want to make a name for themselves here. Even if only as a stepping stone for some of them.
If you have a large enough squad then you can afford to lose 1 or 2 without any problems.
Well thats what I think any how.

  12. Oh for the days of just going to the match, and enjoying, or not what you had seen.

Chill out, and get back to enjoying your sport.

  13. Look at the past boots Rob Lee and Andy Cole were great signings from lower league clubs and I agree you can pick up bargain they are out there to be had. However, there has to be a balance and I think you need to spend big money on the odd occasion to improve the team and move it forward. I think at the end of the day we share the same feelings we want the black and whites to do as well as possible

      (Quote)

  14. So is Agbon… up for sale? and would he want to come here?
I hear what you are saying, but would he see us as an improvement on where he is? Thats my point, or would he only be coming for the larger salary?

      (Quote)

  18. yeah you’re right, there needs to be a balance. Its also another reason why we should be looking to keep some of our more experienced players, you know the ones who are approaching the dreaded 30 mark.
I dont agree with the policy of getting rid at that age. They bring stability, experience and leadership to the younguns. There should be a place for some of these players, like Nolan. Not on long contracts tho.

      (Quote)

  19. Plus Bristol is a **** hole. I’m stood outside Colston Hall as we speak and I can confirm that Bristol is not a patch on Newcastle 😉

      (Quote)

  20. BB – But there was a place for Nolan at the end of day. Its alright saying not to give them long contracts, but that is what they want at that age. Its what most of us would want as we head to retirement.

There has to be a balance though. Its all well and good saying Nolan wouldn’t have lasted in our team and would soon be out of it by virtue of vein replaced with younger, better players, but he would have been helpful this season for sure. Which is why I don’t get the logic in our contract dealings….

Lets offer a player who could be a spent force within a year or two a new deal when there is no need to as he still has….. A year or two left on his contract, but lets **** about with players who need contracts and could do a job for us in the next 3,4,5 years 😕

      (Quote)

  21. Howay Toonsy, Nolan was offered a 2 year extension, ontop of the 2 yrs he had left. I think that was a fair deal. Nolan was just being a greedy c*nt.
He got lucky with WHam. But they wont want to keep him if they dont get promotion. And I’ll PMSL 😆

      (Quote)

  22. Yeah but why offer an extension when there was no need to? That is what I don’t get….

      (Quote)

  23. @FS

    Absolutely agree with you.
No one I know is disappointed with the buys of Cabaye, Marveaux or Ba and what makes them good signings are they were cheap.

It’s ridiculous to say anything different.

You are spot on about the £35. Carroll was sold and we were all told al that money would be reinvested. If they had explained at the time, that 2 free transfers and a £4.8m player would take up most of the cash then there would have been hell on.

@BB, do you not think we have shown who we want on at least 3 occasions and been blown out the water by not offering a good financial package to tempt them. Gameiro, Gervinho, Erdinc?
    There’s 3 names for you.

Decent strikers cost more money in general in terms of wages and transfers. They must get over this fact if they want to attract the quality they seem to be trying to get.

      (Quote)

  24. Still, at least he can’t sweet talk any more of our players into moving to his beloved Liverpool 😆

      (Quote)

  25. Plus we have tried to sort out a contract with Enrique, but he is playing the c*nt game too. JB was offered a new one too but rejected it.

  26. I really hope this is not us. Surely it can’t be.
Just to add to the original story-

I think we need to look in the championship. Some of the players we have been linked with who ply thier trade in the championship show better quality than the players we had in the championship 2 years ago. Why not take a punt. We need to add depth to a thin squad.

I see .org have mentioned Bendtner. Never going to happen. The bloke is on 60k a week to be a bit part player, and he says he justifies it because he is an entertainer. That will go down reet well with Ashley and Co. Plus I don’t want a lump up front. Firstly guys Cashley is a gambler ,Aspers or preferably, NUFC.
08-09 he gambled by not strengthening in January window, we know how that went.
09-010 despite agreeing a way forward with AS he want back on his word -cheaper option ? and Gambled again on CH we know how that went FANTASTIC- Promotion and Great team spirit. CH making steady progress dared to ask for money and a contract- trounced the scum- sacked. Gambled, o sorry this time it was AP who gambled and had to pay off a Debt, ended up as spin doctor & Lick spittle for FCB and lambARSE.
January – Gambled- sells No 9 for £35ml,”Too good to turn Down ” . AP Quote “Mike has promised me £35ml will be spent on strengthening the team”.
Decent finish in EPL 12th then “the £35ml will be sent on the club” 👿
“free players cost money ❓ Sell club Capitan and top scorer -Gamble
Try to move on Fans Player of the year, shows his contempt for #NUFC fans.Biggest gamble.
Grass seed must be now be £10ml a ton as LambARSE ” we dont have to spend the monies left until January” from an interview with telegraph. no more signings ? GAMBLE.
I hope these gambles pay off, YH ,HBA, Look good,SM- only played 10 games in 2 season, potentially good, DBa- ?5 -10 games then sick note!?
FCB has no intention of financing a squad to challenge for top 10,
    Sales of Bassong- Martins-Nzog = £ml??. £35ml AC + KN £4ml- TV revenue Merchandising £ml? season ticket revenue£ml?.
Expenditure £4.5 YC- freebees- £2ml ea =£9ml max.
looks like its going [Gone]to Aspers-?or MRS FCB ?Defo not NUFC.
I know £££££mls does not guarantee a great buy/player,[ Owen xisco ect ] but more often ,it get’s u more than freeplayers /cheap.Tiote the recent exception.
I know we have some very high earners on the books not contributing- Xisco Smith .
But still #NUFC in top 4 biggest average crowds for over 10yrs now this must generate massive revenue ££££mls.
The best we can hope for is FCB has steadied the financial side to sell up a f*ckoff .
PS Stephen Irleand on SSN “forced to come To #NUFC” A bullit dodged
    there Guys.
    here endeth the ramble 😳

  36. No way would we get bendtner and I wouldn’t want him either. He seems so stuck up and a big baby if he isn’t in the starting line up

      (Quote)

  37. I do not think the majority of fans are unhappy that our signings so far have been ‘frees’ at all. To suggest we will have been happier if the same signings were at a large cost is crazy.
Coming into the close season, we all knew the squad was lacking in depth in a lot of areas. We all knew there would need to be a couple of freebies signed if they were available. Realistically the players we have so far have represented good business. The issue the majority have is that the manager and board now appear to be using the freebie signings as an excuse for not spending the 35 million on new players like they promised when Carroll went. Instead they hide under the training ground and wages guise.
Of course there is still time in this window to prove us all wrong and make those couple of marquee signings. Time will tell, but it looks like we are being set up for a fall.
Let us not forget that as the season’s end approached, we were already short in depth. We then let a striker, center half and goalscoring midfielder go (as well as Ireland). So that is 4 out and so far 3 in with a future prospect added on top. Now we are pretty much where we were in the 1st place, still lacking in depth albeit allegedly with a little more quality. We are also being told one of our best strikers from last season in Best is free to go. Add to that Routlege and Smith (not going to argue about those two) and probably Enrique and Barton and we will be even less well equipped in terms of depth.
As we can see we need quite a few in the door still, yet the excuses already appear to be creeping in. Could be an interesting few weeks up until the window.
Oh and by the way, excluding Ba…. How many of us honestly knew anything about Marveaux, Albeid or Cabeye before we signed them? Cabeye looks decent granted, but dont you think the new arrivals have been slightly over hyped?
I can just see doing the bare minimum yet again in order to scrape through the next season waiting to clear the balance sheet and just about survive as a Premier League club so that the club looks like an attractive proposition for a future buyerto take the club off his hands at a huge profit. In the meantime we have to put up with playing 2nd fiddle to the Scum due to a lack of ambition. It’s not like we are asking to break the bank and repeat the Shephard era, we just want fair representation for playersales and gate receipts reflected in incoming transfers. Remind the clubs fans and players why this club is a great one thats all.

What you are clearly trying to insinuate s that a big fee will just get us an over the hill, greedy has-been.

This is nonsense – you’re arguing a logical fallacy.
For example- Birds can fly. Penguins are birds. Therefore penguins can fly.

Just because Owen (and a few others Newcastle have bought recently) have been overpriced rubbish DOES NOT imply that all players for a large fee are likewise.

We broke a league transfer record to bring Shearer to the club. He was on high wages. Are you trying to tell me HE was a waste of money?
What about Collocini – he cost £10m didn’t he? Just been made our
    captain.

What It’s the quality of the player that matters, not the fee. I don’t remember anyone thinking buying Owen for that much money was a good idea at the time, except Shepherd.

My point is totally lost on you again.

Surely if we are putting in bids for these players, Gervinho, Gameiro, Erdinc then we have to consider that many other clubs will be interested in them including CL clubs. If we want to put a serious package in, then not only does the transfer fee have to meet the clubs requirements, and usually it does, BUT if we are being serious about attracting them then our financial package has to be more attractive than say Arsenals otherwise it’s a fruitless effort and sometimes I wonder whether the regime know this.

Until we flex our muscles and finish above them consistently and convincingly over a period of time then the best we can hope for is being on a par with them. That is not right because as history, tradition and resources point out we shold be well above them in every way and we are clearly not.

I dont think Pards has much say on the issue. I think it’s The Director of Football Graham Carr and Mike Ashley who decide. Pards coaches them.

Er, if we want a player like Gervinho for example, who is in a team playing well, is an international, is in a position to want to play in Europe, is wanted by teams who can finish high in theory respective leagues, who ate managed by respected managers, then yes, OBVIOUSLY we are very likely have to offer them bigger wages to appear as an attractive option.
    It’s commonsense..

To use Gervinho as an example.
What could we offer him compared to Arsenal besides money.

You seem to think footballers are altuists who would come to us out of kindness?!?

From one of Cabayes interviews it appears he was told we were going to be aiming for European Qualification.
Obviously no one told him Lambias had already told us our goal was just to make 10th place. I think we may see a new kind of French Revolution next season if we can’t do better than 10th.
