Game on! Kansas City v Newcastle.

Kansas City - There's no place like home.....
This will be one for you nightcrawlers as I’m off to bed shortly, but I also want the chance to be able to catch up on how Newcastle have done in the first match of their US tour when I wake up.

Hence the reason for this article. It’s late in the UK so it may not be busy, or it may work out well. Quite simply I don’t know, but there is no harm in trying is there? What I’m hoping for is that you guys that will be in the loop can keep us guys who aren’t in the loop up to speed with the match.

It may take some odd ways and means of doing it as no TV coverage is scheduled for the match, but you never know, a stream or some radio or some text commentary or anything may pop up and give you the chance of chatting about the match this evening/this morning/this afternoon/whatever.

As mentioned earlier, out of action are Joey Barton, Yohan Cabaye, Nile Ranger, Mike Williamson, Shane Ferguson, Danny Guthrie, Wayne Routledge and Xisco for varying reasons so we should get a decent look at some of the younger players in the squad, particularly Mehdi Abeid who has apparently done nothing but impress since his arrival and is now being looked at with a view to being used in the first team.

Hopefully the match will give us another good run out, but most importantly I’d like to hope that we don’t pick up any more injuries. We’ll have enough of them to deal with throughout the season no doubt so it’s best that they are avoided right now!

Searing temperatures of 100ºF are expected at LiveStrong Park so fatigue will be a problem for our boys. I think it’s safe to say that we’ll see a few substitutions throughout the game. Meanwhile Kansas are in the middle of the MLS season so they should be much fitter and will of course be more acclimatised to the weather.

Let’s see how it pans out eh? I’d predict a score but, with the greatest of respects, I don’t have a clue about Sporting Kansas City so wouldn’t even know where to start! Naturally if you guys can find any, and I mean any, forms of broadcast then please feel free to share them with the rest of your fellow Newcastle fans.

As for me, I’ve worked for 14 hours, it’s late, I’m at work again tomorrow, and I’m off to bed. I hope you have fun and I expect to see plenty of comments and banter from you guys who are up and about at this time of day.

Howay the lads!

  1. Seriously, I see **** week in, week out that deserves much, much more severe reactions from the MLS refs. They’re really awful. They don’t understand the game. As poor as our players have been for these many years, the refs are even farther behind.

  2. Apparently an ambulance has just left the stadium, hopefully Benny isn’t bloody in it. Nightmare!!

  3. lee_ryder: #nufc HBA update. No ambulance. Has twisted ankle not deemed a major problem. Precautionary. He was smiling on way off. [via Twitter]

  4. Thank bloody goodness for that. That was a nasty 10-15 minute period. Heart in mouth stuff. Hope this makes him stronger

  5. Hey army, yeah he was but they’re saying now it was only a precaution thankfully 😀

  6. News from the dressing room is that Ben Arfa’s withdrawl was a precautionary one, that the injury doesn’t look serious, it may just be a slight twist. So good early news there but we will give you the full update on nufc.co.uk and nufcTV when we have it, so stay tuned

  11. Just watched philadelphia union s youngsters play everton off the pitch. 1 nil. could have been 3 or 4. Everton wasnt conditioned for this weather. Hope our lads are doing better

  12. We could if we had the players. Only 18 outfield i think, minus vuckic, enrique and hba. Could be wrong, might have one or two more

  13. Well, there we go. I just saw another hacking challenge from a MLS player and no card, nothing. Studs up, completely missed the ball and the ref gives bupkis. Stupid ******* MLS refs, man…

  14. Seems like the game has gone quiet. Wonder if at half time the 2 coaches got together and said cool it, we don’t want injuries.

  15. I hope you’re right, Bris. THey need to gradually work up to fitness–not scythe each other down.

The MLS boys were certainly worked up to show what they can do against the big dogs, but it’s senseless for either team to go hog wild here and the managers know that better than the kids on the pitch.

  16. As they always say, these friendlies are all about fitness. The result doesn’t matter. And no doubt the heat is taking its toll. I can vouch for the effect that heat has on your game. You have to play the game slowly. Pass the ball to feet. Go on quick bursts. If you play the all action PL way, you’ll be fecked after half an hour.

But if I ever had the chance to play against Newcastle I’d have given it my all, and been chuffed to get a draw.

  17. I love that Kansas care enough about us to use a banner about Carroll. S’always nice when you can’t even name one of their players, or even their stadium 😆

  18. Seems like it was a canny first half and a sh!te second half. They’ll all be better for the run. No doubt there’ll be people saying it proves we need a striker. Yawn in advance. Friendlies prove nothing. Ask Leyton Orient.

I’m a bit concerned about the HBA scare. That brought home just how precarious the season will be. But interesting that there seemed to be a few unexpected player positions – Gosling on the left, Jonas at full back.

Looking forward to the next game.

  19. Bris-Yeah its not so much strikers, more the creativity of Ben Arfa. Seemed like as soon as he went off we just couldn’t put anything together. Not really surprising, Gosling is good but he can’t cover for Barton/Cabaye.

  20. This game means nothing but fitness… or injury, in the case of HBA.

That 100 degree heat will put the whack on any game. Just for perspective, it’s 93 degrees at 10:00pm out there. (Sad to say that weather’s headed my way in New York tomorrow…)

Thankfully, they seemed to chill out for the 2nd half.

  21. ” No doubt there’ll be people saying it proves we need a striker”

No. Don’t be so childish. The fact we only have one decent striker proves we need another striker.
This match doesn’t really prove anything.

      (Quote)

  22. Actually I’m amazed it took a knock to Ben Arfa to make you realise how precarious our season might be.
There’s a few people have been mentioning the dangers of not bolstering the squad and improving the strength in depth, they’ve been doing it for a while.
Maybe if you’d listened to some of what was being said instead of constantly deriding opinions other than your own with your ‘clever’ replies, the potentially precarious nature of this season might not have been such a surprise to you.

  23. Oh, and while I’m on-
In the other thread you suggested that some people were reading minds or knowing what went on behind closed doors, or something similar.
It seemed at least partly to be in response to a comment i made about Cabaye (and possibly the other new lads) being told the club was aiming to get back into Europe this season. Presumably to make it sound more attractive to come here.
Toonsy categorically stated that Cabaye never said this, and your response seemed to suggest that I just made it up.

This was reported in several different sources just recently.
Here is the quote from Cabaye:
“I am going to play in the best championship in the world for a club who want to get back into Europe within a year and one who are building an ambitious team.”

So, what would you say he’s been told our aims are?

  24. Ben Arfa will miss the rest of the US tour, hope he recovers soon, he needs pre season matches 🙁

  25. OK, I wasn’t going to reply but why the hell not.

I wasn’t surprised by the sense of precariousness, in fact I’ve mentioned this in a few posts, which is what I was alluding to in my post match comment. Just because I don’t couch my fears in the familiar hyperbole doesn’t mean I don’t have concerns. I’m more interested in contributing to debate than in being noticed by other bloggers (btw I’m a bit chuffed you’ve taken notice of what I write).

I have also mentioned a number of times that we need more quality in depth.

I could go in search of these posts but I don’t feel any great desire to prove that to you. True, recently I’ve been a bit flippant. Just boredom with listening to the same old sh!te from the same old bankers. Actually, it’s a bit annoying that you notice my flippancy and not my more serious posts. But that’s probably a reflection of who you are, I guess.

As for the bit about having a go at you – nah, nothing of the sort. Sorry, but you didn’t even enter my thoughts. I was commenting in general about those (ref: the bankers above) who know beyond doubt, seemingly, how our owner thinks.

Have a lovely day, pootle, dear.

      (Quote)

  26. So the fact that flippancy is the only thing of note in your hollow posts, is now unsurprisingly somehow my fault too?

    Lol. Priceless.

Believe me your droning Ashley sycophancy is every bit as dull as anything brought up by anyone who criticised Ashley.
Ok, I accept it was just a coincidence that your ‘bankers’ post about people knowing peoples thoughts’ just happened to closely follow a post I made which could have been misconstrued as me claiming to ‘know peoples thoughts’, but was in fact, unbeknownst to you, me quoting something Cabaye said.

      (Quote)

  27. Pootle – Im amazed you give Cabaye so little credit. Do you not think he would have looked at the situation himself aswell? Or would he have just blindly followed what he was told?
