Would a protest really work?

Stay away day?
I’ve read a lot over these last few days about protests and campaigns about the ownership of Newcastle United which have largely been brought about from the Joey Barton fiasco.

My own personal opinion is that the bad feeling has always been there simmering away – it just needed another reason to rear it’s head.

Now this great democracy (hahahaha) we live in allows us, the normal folk, to hold a good old protest providing it’s peaceful, organised and, above all else, legal. There is nothing wrong with people wanting to make a stand of course, but to me it’s all folly and is kind of a pointless exercise. Why? Well here goes…

I’ve read various fanciful suggestions ranging from borrowing another clubs “Poznan” celebration (who in turn borrowed that from another club anyway) and doing it inside the ground to marching before and after matches. Great, wonderful. Whatever floats your boat.

Hardly original though is it? I thought the best fans in the lad were better than that? It also kind of defeats the object of the protest if you ask as ultimately you’ll still be giving your hard earned cash to the club. All you’d be doing is making noise and looking like an idiot with no actual difference to the club whatsoever. You might get your face on camera but going by some of the exhibits that Sky drag up I would guess that’s perhaps not the greatest thing, unless you’re like me and have a face that the camera loves of course!

The idea of a protest is to make a difference is it not? To make the person you are directing said protest to realise that you are making a stand against them. Marches, banners, chants have all been done and guess what? None of them have made a difference.

If people are so determined to make a stand then they need to make a sacrifice. If you love somebody, set them free, and that means parting with NUFC for a period of time.

A lot of people are convinced that Mike Ashley is only in it for the money. The accounts say that the club still owe him cash after all he has put in like, but still people are convinced that he is lining his pockets. Whatever, it’s an irrelevant point.

Why not have the courage of your conviction to turn off that tap and stay away from the ground? Don’t buy merchandise? Don’t buy pies or drinks or anything at the ground. Hit him in the pocket and make him realise that without us suddenly his latest plaything will start costing him more and more money.

I’ve not bought a Newcastle shirt since before we were relegated, which is odd as I used to buy them all. I don’t go to St James’ Park anymore as a general rule but if I do I buy a ticket and that’s it. In fact 99% of games I go to now are away from home. I put as little as is possible into the club. It’s my own little stand which probably saves me around £1,000 a year when totalled up.

Imagine 100 people doing that? Imagine 1,000 people doing that? Will it ever happen? Probably not. Loyalty being the reason that many will state, although I must admit that I’m actually still a Newcastle fan and I’m actually still as loyal as they come.

I just despair when I see these half-baked “Poznan” ideas and thoughts of marches. It’s not original and has been proven not to work in the past. Why waste energy doing it all over again?

Something else I don’t think will work is all these new groups being dicks in general and getting all abusive. Steve Wraith’s latest group done just that. It was a great idea until that happened and you realise that it will end up just the same as the rest of them. If you want to talk to people then don’t slag them off. Is it that hard to understand?

So what do you reckon to my idea? It’s crazy, but it just might work. At the end of the day if people feel so strongly about it then they need to take strong action to back it up. Short term pain, long term gain.

Or are people just going to keep paying their money blindly anyway?

  1. I’m all for this Poznan carry on.I’m willing to support people who get off their **** won’t give up and are willing to give things a bash.No matter what obstacles are in their way. Whether it works or not at least people are coming up with fresh ideas rather than whinging on.The way some of youse are going on on here you’d think you were Doris Stokes lovechildren- you have no idea how it could turn out.Yet you speak like you do.

  2. Toonsy, your comment at 74 has to be the most aesthetically fitting to your avatar yet, even though I don’t understand the context, the emoticon echoes the disdain. 😐

  3. I would do the poznan one, if it was happening. Just to join in like and so i can shout what I think about MA.

But protesting in the ground is not the best idea ever….. 🙄

  4. What’s the whole point of it? I know it’s going on inside the ground.. not great idea, but if everyone else was doing it, me joining in wont make a difference. I don’t think it will happen anyway.

  5. Hhmm, Dee-tective Sergeant, we have a one Cockrill Jenkins here, with the strange kinda bike painting, and equally intriguing moniker. Can you give me a takedown on this, over…

  6. ‘Protests’ wouldn’t work because there are too many apathetic, too many lethargic and too many hopeful supporters out there.

Personally, as ever, I’m disappointed that so many are quick to ridicule the idea that someone should get off their ar*e and attempt to do something about something they care about.

The Internet affords the opportunity for scorn like no other medium. Fancy people believing they could change things for the better. Nobody in history has ever done that before right? Martin Luther King, Emily Pankhurst, Nelson Mandella had nothing but pipedreams. Those ‘niggers’ still sit on the bus in the States right? Oh wait…

  7. Sorry guys but protest against what?? We have a savvy billionaire owner who wants the club to run like a business and not go bankrupt!! Liverpool are spending milloions with borrowed money so there is no way they will get in the champions league next season with the new rules coming into force and man city are ony as good as long as the current owner does not get bored of them. Our club has to be sustainable to last and grow stronger.even sir alan sugar got out of football cos he new football clubs were killing him!! So stop blaming the md and look forward to the new era of football.

  9. I’m all for people having a protest, but at least make it meaningful or original???

Poznan – Brilliant. Let’s copy something from someone who copied that from someone who copied that etc etc then sing songs against the board, which has also been done before.

Why not do something different, something serious, if people are so pissed off about it? That is my main kind of point.

  11. SCOTTIE – I admire the positive mental attitudes going around at the moment, but I’m afraid I think most are being blind-sided. Only a minority would advocate spending beyond means, but the fact is our board are showing evidence that they are taking back what is owed, and in the meantime both short and medium term we will suffer because of it.

Also, I don’t think it’s beyond reason to suggest a wealthy enough owner could throw a little money at the club without asking for anything in return, other than value for money on the pitch.

I like the idea of refusing to move at the end of the game, but not enough people will do it, meaning the people who do will be prosecuted.

I mean, if 30’000 didn’t move, they couldn’t ban us all, they’d loss a very large some of money.

  14. andy @10 brilliant idea in theory…yet it would prove very difficult without intelligent, experienced and professional people involved! it would seem like one of the few solutions at the current time

  16. COCKRILL – that would have been my second guess. I saw you’d popped up on ‘the other site’ when I was reading through a few threads today. Good to see you around pal, I always admired your work and would have liked to have seen you pen a few articles.

  17. I agree with Buddy @99 about @10.

There would also have to be people who have been involved with the club before that care about the club to show it is serious.

    EG: Alan Shearer and KK.

Also, all facts and figures would need to be known, quite simply, we cant get to them.

  18. Bowburn – He can always pen a few articles on here if he likes. You know I publish sent in articles 🙂

Would you agree that the players that have been bought in have been quality??? We got Ba ( a sensation last year at west ham ) for free and we have three french internationals for next to nothing!! If we spend £30m on a tevez or who ever does that make better sense than getting 5 players for 10m??? I agree that we need at least 1 more striker and 2 more defenders buts let get good deals rather than blowing it all on a trophy player. Think we should get lualua back from briton though co he is a class back up

  27. @scottie, we have not spent a penny of the carroll money so therefore it was a horrendous decision to sell him. it could have been 60 million but theres no point in selling players if the money isnt re-invest ala spurs!

we are now close to have a weaker squad both in quality, quantity, leadership and balance than last years squad (a newly promoted team at that)…we will probably make a profit in the forthcoming year and we have also over 42 million in player sales with more to come in. so i think its fair to say that there are NO excuses for us not having a better squad than last year, and NO excuses for not doing better than last year. yet i think we will struggles more as ashley has ripped the backbones from the side. will we bring in more players…probably but its a must. will they be of sufficient quality…highly doubtful as we dont pay any more than the bare minimum really, and good players usually cost money

      (Quote)

  28. Buddy, did you not know that free transfers cost loads of money these days? 😉

  29. When will people realise that this isn’t about paying back what’s owed. That is fair enough and what MA is entitled to.

The problem is the constant lies and the fact that these people can’t be trusted. They constantly lie and don’t even bother to make it convincing.

  30. Lads a protest will never work because too many people are willing to just accept what ever is threw there way too many want an easy life and too many think that it wouldn’t make a difference, and too many think aw I couldn’t be bothered with that sure one person isn’t going to make a difference, but if the rest of the people made a difference that one person would still expect to gain through the others hard work and determination.
Maybe its different for me in Northern Ireland but I was always told that if something is worth having you sometimes have to go through a lot of pain , hardship, and sometimes you might have to give up things that mean a lot to you for a while, because the ultimate goal will make it all worthwhile. I have took part in lots of protest when I was younger and we were victorious sometimes but the main thing was we all stuck together to make a difference.
    Howay the Lads

  32. Sorry lads but no matter what we do Fatty will still own the club and continue to run it the way he pleases. It’s as simple as that.

I actually feel defeated by him, and I almost don’t care what happens.

It’s like when a 3 year old bairn is working his ticket, and you do everything in your power to make him behave.

In this particular bout of bad behaviour, nothing works, so in the end you just accept it and find it a touch amusing. The only thing that would work is a severe hiding, but of course you can’t do that these days.

      (Quote)

  33. SCOTTIE – no, I’m talking about spunking money on trophy players, I was just speculating that money not necessarily coming from revenue could be spent on players, that’s what some owners are about.

Anyway, regards the players we’ve signed, who knows? I’m away from home at the moment and haven’t seen any games. I don’t think we can judge the players until they’ve played a good few games. My worry would be that we’ve replaced proven players with players who need to settle as a rule rather than an exception. They won’t all hit the ground running.
