Pieters interest confirmed?

Erik Pieters - Making the toon really turn orange?
It seems as though the reported interest in PSV Eindhoven left-back could have some substance after reports in Holland indicated that we do indeed hold an interest in the player.

Forgive me for being sceptical of the British media, but when it’s only them that are linking us to a particular player I tens to overdose on salt. However when other media outlets, notably more reliable foreign press, start reporting things I tend to take a bit more notice of transfer rumours.

Reports in Holland, namely from Dutch website fcupdate, confirm that Graham Carr was at the match and claim that he was watching the 23-year-old return from injury for PSV.

The interesting thing for me, and the bit that makes me think that we are indeed interested in Pieters, is the emergence of a unspecified release clause in his contract. Apparently it’s a rather low release clause, which just about sounds like something we’d be after doesn’t it?

As for the player, I actually don’t know anything about him. I know he is highly-rated in Holland and gets a glowing recommendation from some of our Dutch fans such as Axel who claims that he is “every bit as good as Enrique”. I don’t know about that but with 10 caps for The Netherlands he can’t be too shabby can he?

Apparently Pieters can also play at centre-back, so not only would it potentially sort our need for a left-back (regardless of whether or not Jose goes) it would also give us a bit more cover in the centre of defence. Two for the price of one? I’ll have that.

So is the interest confirmed? Well officially I guess not, but it is certainly more substantiated than a flimsy Daily Mail report.

What do you think?

  2. Rich – You know I did wonder how long it would be before one of the “realists” – you know, the ones who still think think Ashley doesn’t know he is despised and will change his ways with dialogue 😆 😆 😆 came out with that kind of thing. You’ve done it for them though 😕

  3. Said this a few times but Nedum Onuoha, Sullied from last season but better defensively and quicker than our current “right backs” and another option for centre half, Worth a punt for a couple of million or a seasons loan ??

  4. Toby – actually it’s a good point and no offence taken. I did go off on one totally on the Joey thing. Something totally lit my wick. But I still stand by the opinion, even if the wording was a bit much at times. Sorry to anyone who was offended.

My best guess is that I now live so far away things look very different from when I was surrounded by others who see things in a NUFC-centric way. Once outside the NE, it all looks very different and it’s been like watching your mates getting bullied while unable to intervene. Basically it’s not the club that’s been a laughing stock since the latest ‘Joeygate’, it’s the fans.

I get angry because the Toon Army is looking idiotic to the world because it’s defending the indefensible. The phrase ‘deluded fans’ has never been easier to use.

    I dunno. Just a theory. 😐

  5. Anyway – back on the positive, which today is a lot easier to find.

I think everyone is agreeing now that if we get this Pieters fella and a striker we’ll be looking pretty good. Just down to AP and co to get them working as a team as quickly as possible.

I’m actually quite excited about the season; I just hope it’s not delayed by a load of scum-shagging, freeloading, shop-torching low-lifes. (And yes, I mean the rioters; not anyone at the club!) 😆

  7. Well I hope yer right RichieToon about Joey staying as his position seems to change by the day! We need some experience to stay to blend with the new French wonder kids. Will they be able to understand his scouse accent? It appears that this Obertan is going to set the Toon on fire with Demba Ba & Shola getting on the end of his pin point crosses. Don’t know where JB is going to play now though with so many midfielders but probably the plan is to play HBA just off one main striker especially away from home.

  8. Agree with CC Nedum Onuha may be worth a punt. He played with Tayls quite a lot for England under 21s. Samba would be my choice though but I don’t think MA would shell out the cash. He gets goals too. I think we’ll find the Puppet will tell us at the end of the window that WE tried hard to sign a suitable striker but failed. Fat Mike saving his cash in case he needs to panic buy in January. Meantime make do & mend!
