Forster replacement sorted?

Rob Elliot: "Oooh suits you..."
According to the links in the press Newcastle have signed, or are about to sign, Charlton Athletic goalkeeper Rob Elliot.

The 25-year-old is said to be coming to Newcastle as a direct replacement for the recently departed Fraser Forster who completed another season long loan deal to Celtic yesterday.

If there is any truth in this, and I have a suspicion that there won’t be as the reports originate from the Daily Mail, then it kind of leaves me scratching my head a little bit. It’s a pointless exercise that serves no real purpose as we already have more goalkeepers in reserve. Why rush out and bring in a third choice keeper when we could quite easily give that space to one of our own like, Ole Soderberg? Signing Elliot is an ingenious solution to a problem that doesn’t actually exist.

Part of the allure, for me anyway, of allowing Forster to join Celtic again, is that it’s a move that makes everyone happy. Neil Lennon is happy he has got his man, Forster is happy as he’ll be getting first-team games, Ashley will be happy as he has trimmed the wagebill again (you have to save pennies you know..), I’m happy as we’ve shifted a player who couldn’t even catch a cold and it gives us another space in the 25 man squad. Not that the last bit really matters at the moment anyway.

Bearing all that in mind I was quite prepared to see one of our prospects move up the pecking order. Soderberg has been around a while now and is improving. He is another one of a string of highly-rated goalkeepers so I had assumed that he would be rewarded by being moved that one step closer to the first team, much like he was last season when Forster was at Celtic. It seems straight-forward enough doesn’t it?

So what happens instead? We go after a 25-year-old keeper who will need to be registered to play, has limited time left in his career (yes I know, 25-years-old isn’t old, but it’s more limited that Soderberg anyway), and has never played Premier League football. It’s wasting money (however little, remember the pennies!) where it doesn’t need to be spent, especially when you consider that if it ever came to having to play our third-choice keeper the Soderberg and Elliot would have exactly the same amount of risk attached to them.

The only thing I can think of is that there is something wrong with Steve Harper. There has been a problem with his knees for sometime now and he even admits that if he has to retire then it will more than likely be something to with his knees. He has been out a long time now and has been absent from team selection despite apparently being fit. Maybe Harper’s number is up?

Who knows? I don’t. What I do know is that there are other more important positions that need strengthened ahead of us going for another goalkeeper. A striker would be nice. An actual left-back would be even better. If push came to shove we could probably limp through until January with our current goalkeepers which would give us time to really look for something. The other positions, I’m not so sure.

What do you make of it all?

  1. Not only in the Mail i’m afraid Toonsy – it’s aal ower the press, looks like a done deal

But, yeah… baffling. What happens to Harper now? Journos insist he isn’t injured

  2. when AP said he will definately have a new left back and a front man for derby at weekend is this what it is all about signing somebody what i dont think we need harper qaulity and so is krul got reserve keepers, so pull finger ap and get the players you said LB,FW

      (Quote)

  3. yep.. seems to be a done deal out of the blue. **** knows what the point of this is cos either way its not a solution. If Harper is not crocked then we dont need this bloke and if harper is finished we still dont need this bloke but need a better keeper as number 2 to krul. it stinks of cost cutting, nothing more..think about it, if they move on forster and retire harper due to knees and bring in this cheapo option then they have prob saved all of harpers salary and a bit of forsters too. its just another cost cutting bull **** plan… as with everything else. i kinda hope we get relegated and stay down for the entire time that Ashley has us. I enjoyed our season down in the ccc and it would be great to know ashley is reaping what he has sown.

  5. Nicky Maynard is a name I have seen mentioned on here mainly in derogatory terms.
At say 4.5 million it is hardly a wild gamble he will retain some value even if he fails.

Anybody think he is worth a shot?

    Not expecting many approvals

  6. What is the point in fannying around with the Forster issue which will only benefit Celtic when there are more urgent matters to sort, a few weeks ago amongst my anger i retained a small hope that they wouldnt dare stick it up the fans again this window but it doesnt look very promising does it.

  7. i would never want the club to be relegated, The way i look at it is if Ashleys not spending money then hes taking his loan back and is closer to ******* off…

  8. TlR – I agree. I was going to say the same the other day but didn’t for fear of being shot down.

And how ironic is it that the words he said in January, which were ridiculed by many on here and in the press, were not that of a bitter man but a true reflection of our once respected and now tuppence happeny club?

I haven’t posted in a while as all the constant whinging on here is out of control.. Feels like ground hog day….

It’s like the TV, if a particular show offends you, turn it over or off… don’t just complain about it all fecking day… If you don’t like the owners or the players we are getting, go support another club… sick of it to be honest…

  11. Craig has just admitted what a lot of “fans” seemed to be hinting at last night: that they’d accept another relegation or two and years of lower league football if it meant getting rid of Ashley.

I’ve heard about cutting off your nose to spite your face, but that’s a full on decapitation. Unbelievable. 😕

  12. Seem like Harper may be used sparingly nxt season, his final year?

Toonsy.. Do you think Nicky Maynard is any better than L Best?

Considering we were after 3 top European strikers and have been linked with a few Prem-duds would this not be a step down, considering we’ll be competing with the likes of Leicester City for his signature.

I thought S LOng was a bit of a gamble I was happy for us to take but Maynard?

  13. The way i see it is we have 3 decent keepers. Krul, harper, forster and two prospects soderberg/alnwick we probably shouldn’t sign another keeper. If there is something wrong with harper put a clause in forsters contract so that he can come back. After all this talk of not have any money it’s a baffling signing. Is he even that good? I’ve never heard of him. All in all a needless signing which is just going to bring up more questions of where the lb/striker is.

  14. Cant even contemplate another relegation and Pardew needs to realise that if it goes tits up on Saturday, its him that will get it in the neck and he wont survive the backlash.

      (Quote)

  15. Sounds like Saturdays “rumour” is true. Harper was told that he was no longer “numero un” and stormed out saying that he would not be on the bench Saturday. Harper turned up at the ground Saturday and there was not even a ticket left for him to get in. He had to contact someone he knew, who had a box, and apparantly he watched the game from there. If anyone can verify if he was in this box or not it would at least confirm/dispell the “rumour”

      (Quote)

  16. Very strange to see this keeper business. Forster clearly isnt rated by Pards as he wouldve been kept at the club.

LB/ST – well lets see. I hope so, they have said so, I will give them the time.

The problem for me is that the club is a little like the country, in too much debt that needs to be paid back. Yes its happening and we dont like it, but for gods sake I am sick of reading all this crud about wanting to get relegated so we can get shot of Ashley. What nonsense. I still say that he will get us a couple of players in we need and still get us into a much better position. We needed to sell a couple, Judas and Jose WANTED to go. However you dress it up. Noone is forced to leave and sign a contract anywhere, I havent heard of when the law suits will be heard for unfair dismissal or constructive dismissal like KK.

Cant we just stop this pi$$ing and moaning and fishing and biting **** and just support the bloody team?!

  19. @23 – if true he needs to be fined. What a joke of a reaction. Harps is not #1 anymore and such a childish reaction, if true, is just a sign how pampered some players are.

My brother is only in his 2nd year of his career with ‘Pools and has already told them he doesnt want to be a #2 and wants to push and move if needed to be #1 somewhere. Shows ambition. Unlike sitting on a bench for 15 years and spitting out the dummy when someone better and younger gets the shirt.

  20. i know what you guys are saying but the flip side of what i am saying is that… i support nufc, not the premiership. Why do you prefer us to be in tyhe prem exactly at this time as we have no ambition to do well in it. For me, i find it rather demoralising knowing that we have very little if any ambition to do well in the league other than pull through a relegation fight every season. i would love us to be in the prem … but as a genuine team that has aspirations of improving- on the field – every season. I am all for running a tight ship etc but what we have now is just plain nuts. 15 – 20 million a year in the prem is a very modest spend and all teams can afford it, now with our wage structure well and truly under control there is no excuse – other than the obvious one – why we cant spend a penny. For a long period now we have turned a profit in the windows.. we are turning a profit in this one as it stands now. I dont want mega amounts but lets just look at this LB situation – WE DO NOT HAVE A LB IN THE CLUB ffs…. we should by rights have two of them vying for the one spot. The young dutch star is ideal and it seems like a no brainer and 7 million should not be an issue, esp on 30k a week salary. I would love to be in the prem all the time … i just want to have a little bit of give from the owner because really.. the way he spends – or does not as it may be…. he has zero aspiration and ambition.. .rot sets in from the top in any organisation and filters through the entire ranks as it has done with many fans now. We will always be a divided nufc until something drastic changes.

That said however, League One and the Premier League are poles apart, and it is a real gamble on Newcastle’s behalf.

If the rumour does come true however, we will wish Elliot all the best.

  27. If we do get this bloke, why don’t we give charlton ole Söderberg. It’s a good deal for charlton, they have a replacement, Söderberg develops as a keeper, par dew gets his man, Ashley doesn’t have to spend much. Harper, with his knees only has two years at best, so after that time put Söderberg in the fold and let them to fight for the number two shirt. Perfect.
P.s bring in a striker and a left back ffs

However, because we support the club, it doesn’t give us the right to demand who we should and should not sign…

Agreed, the whinging and moaning got tiresome more than a month ago.

Maybe everyone would be happier if Enrique got sold on the last day of the season for 3m? Or if we’d kept Judas and Nolan on the form they’re on right now and not signed Cabaye, Marveaux and Ba? Heck, let’s just have Fat Freddy as our chairman and be in a Portsmouth situation where we’re in administration and sitting at the bottom of the league with -9 points and no hope in hell of surviving.

Just goes to show that moaners will always be moaners.

The Celtic loan move is hardly consistent with that. I can’t work it out, just as I can’t work out the thinking of loaning out a very good prospect just to get in a replacement on loan. Is it Llambias’ London connections or Pardew’s?
