R.I.P team spirit 2009-2011.

The end of an era?
Now that Joey Barton has departed I think it’s fair to say that any shred of player power has now been removed from the equation at St James’ Park.

Whether or not this was a deliberate tactic is something that will probably never be known, but I have sneaking suspicion it may have been on the cards for a while.

Players come and players go, although at the moment it seems as though we are seeming more players going out than coming in. These aren’t just any players either. They are first-team players who could still be doing a job for us today.

Once again we are left to pick up the pieces after another blow to the fanbase. We’re getting pretty good at it in truth, mainly because we have to be.

It’s worth remembering that whilst we have lost a core of a team that served us well it was thought that a lot of the players were not good enough just 12 months ago. What a difference a year makes.

I remember last season there was a lot of fans who held the opinion that a lot of the players who have now left wouldn’t be good enough to cut it in the Premier League. Andy Carroll had his doubters, As did Kevin Nolan, Jose Enrique and Joey Barton. Most of the squad did in fact, but they got the job done in the end.

This isn’t an article pointing out that people were wrong. I’m not trying to catch anyone out. What I am trying to say is that those doubts last season were dispelled, so what is to say that it won’t happen again?

None of us know what goes on behind closed doors. Nobody knows what relations are like behind the scenes, but going by the mass team celebrations at Scunthorpe the other night I would tend to believe that they aren’t bad. Who is to say that a new team spirit won’t be formed? One where all are equals and is not run by a clique of senior team members? A one where they don’t hold meetings behind the managers back?

It will be interesting to see how the game on Sunday pans out. It’s games like the one we’ll play against Fulham where we let ourselves down repeatedly last season, and that was with the “drive” and “passion” and “grit” of Kevin Nolan, Jose Enrique and Joey Barton in the side. Hopefully it will give us some answers.

We’re unbeaten thus far this season although some have been quick to point out that we’ve not been at our flowing, attacking best. Quite true, but I’d rather win playing poorly than lose playing nicely at this moment in time thank you. Ask Blackpool fans what they would have preferred last season.

Remember when we were in disarray at the start of the Championship season? Remember how this remarkable team spirit was formed in the first place? By scraping through games and getting results, much like we have done at the start of this season.

Maybe this is the start of something new?

  1. I wrote, during the Scunthorpe game, that if we managed to pull together and win it, that game could be one key psychological moment to forge what has been, up till now, a group of players into a team. We’ll need more of those moments and improved performances from individuals, but right now things are very delicately poised.

This season could easily go to hell. It could equally solidify into a base camp to attack the upper half of the table in the coming years. Trouble is, who the fugh can say? On present evidence, it feels like everything is up in the air. There’s some ability in this team on paper, but there are some gaping holes too… I really have no fughing idea how it’ll all turn out.

  2. Am I hallucinating, Toonsy? I could have sworn I saw a comment from you on an earlier thread that seems to have disappeared. Ah, maybe it’s the hurricane prep and the lovely bottle of Glenlivet playing tricks with my mind.

I was about to write, on my last comment “There’s some ability in this team on paper… but paper ain’t worth the paper it’s printed on!”

In retrospect, that’s pretty fughing funny. But at the moment, I just caught myself and edited it before I hit “add comment.” Now I wish I’d let it fly!

  3. Good old Google translate here, folks.

AC poker Cissé – new prospective
For SC Freiburg is home to an important game – but the interest of the sports clubs currently applies mainly to the Personnel Papiss Cissé. For the SC is guarantor for the striker in the league. But is the transfer period. And now, another interested party has surfaced.

FREIBURG. SC Freiburg on Saturday of playing against VfL Wolfsburg, but the interest is less in Breisgau currently head buyer Felix Magath and his green-white-kick ensemble, rather than the future of Freiburg’s top attacker Papiss Cissé. Three offers for the unerring Senegalese Dirk Dufner has on his desk, is rumored to soon follow one of Newcastle United. Nevertheless, is the sports director of Breisgauer assume that Cisse will continue to play for the sport club. “From the top of her and leaves us no constellation of inquiries are weak,” Dufner said on Thursday. “Actually”, he revealed, “there is no sum for which we want to let him go because he is not for sale in principle. We are only out of respect to players with this issue.”

Cisse, who scored in 22 goals last season for the sports club and in the previous three games of the new season already met four times is true, the quasi Fribourgers as a guarantee of survival for the top division. According Cissé’s value is estimated, which came in January 2010 for 1.5 million euros from the French second division club FC Metz. About 15 million euros plus utilities should have called the Freiburg for the striker as the purchase price. None of the bids will now present Dufner, according to the ideas of the sports clubs but come close – they are too low.

  4. Right, I’ve had enough of seeing your amateur blog on newsnow. Firstly, you constantly end your headlines with a full-stop! Have you ever read a news article ending with a full-stop? Sort it out. Secondly, in a blatant attempt to steal hits from nufcblog.com, you conveniently named your site nufcblog.org. Whilst nufcblog.com is also pathetic, at least it’s original.
My hope from this provoked post is, at the bare minimum, an end to the ridiculous puncuation and, at a long-shot, an end to this blog. Any fans of this blog, please bare in mind that the author makes money from this poorly written garbage, therefore higher standards should be expected.

    Cheers fellow toon fans.

Secondly if you MUST criticize punctuation at least manage to spell it correctly 😈

  7. On subject….. I think your headline is a bit dramatic Toonsy 😎 … I would suspect that a lot of the younger members of the team and some of the other players would have learned from our “leaders” within the club. It was commented by Cabaye on Monday that they were all signing and dancing around the clubroom after the win against the scum. I reckon there are enough strong personalities within the team to keep morale high…

  8. i havnt written for a long while, so excuse me if i miss out a few full stops. We may have good team spirit at the moment but one defeat can erode all that especially with younger players. A good result Sunday depends a lot on crowd reaction to the transfer situation.
I have supported the toon since 1961 so I have seen it all, but one thing I never lost was optimism, that is until soon after Ashley arrived, to the point I do not go now. I despair at this regime, not just the transfer policy, but the lies when they eventually make a comment. I still yearn for a takeover so i can regain faith and return to SJP.

  9. What a strange comment @ 6. If he’s so offended by bad punctuation he’d be best advised not visit almost 99.99% of blogs. One wonders why he still even has an internet connection.

On topic: I think you can see from the reaction after Sameobi’s goal the other day that team spirit is high. And the reports of singing in the dressing room after the 5under1and game as well.

I remember reading a psychology paper a while ago on leader cliques in sports teams. I can’t remember details but the gist of it was that entrenched leadership can adversely affect new recruits because they deny the newbies access to influence, thus affecting their self worth and, consequently, their confidence in their own ability.

But I’m sure there’s just as many articles saying something opposite to that. There always is in academia.

  12. “Any fans of this blog, please bare in mind that the author makes money from this poorly written garbage….”

and talking of poorly written garbage, the correct phrase is ‘bear in mind’, not ‘bare in mind’!

  13. @6… If you’re going to pull people up for mistakes then surely it’s always a good idea not to litter your comment with lots yourself? You are a **** of the highest order, not even an original one at that, maybe next time you’ll get it right. 🙄

  14. Lets not get carried away Barton had 1 good season & I don’t think Nolan would have played much this year. As for Enrique yes he’s a big miss but he hasn’t wanted to be here since January and didn’t have a great second half of the season. I think the team spirit looked fine at S*nderland & Scunny even if we didn’t play well we won both games. As long as Fat Tw*t buys a LB & a Striker I think we could have a decent season I reckon we’ll finish around 10th.

      (Quote)

  15. This Is The concensus of opinion on the new players who have arrived in the transfer window compiled by a group of us who were at Scunthorpe on Thursday,
Cabaye average premier league player will improve
Demba Ba waste of money hopeless.
    Obertan barely better than Routledge
Marveaux not seen enough but looked ok on Thursday night
We were also of the opinion that is unlikely that any new players will come through the door by Wednesday and if they manage to get anyone in it will not be the prov en striker we so desperately need

      (Quote)

  16. well… AP said we would have a forward and LB in by the sunderland game and nothing.. now another week drifts by and all that has happened as we have weakened the ranks even more with wor joey going. We have til wednesday and with monday being bank holiday i guess we have precious little time left…my guess is that we will not now be getting a real player in but may just get some dross to make up the numbers. i can feel it coming now.. along with the multitude of bull **** excuses that we get at the end of every single window.

      (Quote)

  17. richietoon.. when i said that fulham were a boggy team for us (the other day) you said they had beaten us just three times… prob a true stat but stats are funny things ya know mate… i see out of last 7 games we have beaten them once at st james since 2005 season- thats like one win in 6 years. That is not a good conversion ratio so i will stand by my initial post and say that fulham are defo a dodgy team for us and one we slip up against way to often. it will be our first test to see what our new team is like tmrw as in sunderland, we have only lost once there in 31 years or something mental.

      (Quote)

  18. Craig…I did also add the draws on that thread later which left us with 3 wins which isn’t so great 😉 ………but then I don’t believe in bogey teams either otherwise you then have to believe historic results have a direct bearing on what will happen now…..which I don’t 😉

  19. There is a team spirit at Newcastle, it was there for everyone to see at scunny. I’m especially proud of Cabaye and the way he’s thrown him self in there, he’s shown a lot of passion and ability to make me think that he will be a huge fan favourite. He has a winning mentality and I hope that rubs off on the other members of the squad. We have some outstanding youngsters at the club that are desperate to prove a point. Sure the window hasn’t gone as some of us would have expected but I’m admiring the hireachy trying to build a team for the future, out with the old in with the better younger cheaper players. I think that Pardew could potentially be a fantastic manager and I’m glad he is getting to do things his way and build for the future. Much the same as Sir Bobby, it’s just a pity he came to us 10-15 years too late. RIP Bobby. The future looks exciting and hopefully successful. It’s time we stopped moanin about Ashley an co and just got on with supporting the club and manger. I’m personally happy to see the back of Barton, sure he’s passionate and has fantastic ability but his attitude stinks at times. I’m proud of the board for standing up to Joey and not let him walk all over them with his ridiculous twitter behaviour and crazy contract demands.

      (Quote)

  20. Good write up toonsy.

There does seem to be some team spirit there for sure. The win at Scunny was a great result by the way, as we could so easily have lost, but the fighting spirit, which you question saw us through in the end.

I reckon once we get Tiote and Jonas back in the team, get in a new left back and when Ba quits impersonating a poor man’s Shola we’ll be ok… but we need strengthening at left back and up front for sure.

RTaylor for right back anyone ?

FSOTC@3….It’s all over the press here in Jaaarmany that Papiss Cissé wants away from Freiburg, and that a Prem League club are in for him. However there are quotes of 15mill euros being banded about, which is madness….

      (Quote)

  21. Folk need to stop stressing about the incoming potential transfers. We WILL get a LB and a striker in in time.

  22. Belly@26…a positive and refreshing take on things at the Toon. Hope things transpire in that direction mate, would be great…have my doubts about AP though..

Regarding Joey Barton via twitter, this quote really gets my goat…

“I will always have a special relationship with the Geordie nation but sadly they are not the decision makers at St James’ Park.”

“I wish to thank each and everyone of them sincerely for their support.”

    aye….err…..see ya…. 😳

  25. Magpie Ken if you love the team so much why give up attending because you do not like the hierachy, by staying away you do two things you miss the matches and let someone else take your seat what you do not do is influence the hierarchy of the club. You do not know what is going on behind the scenes you only have the media to read and they never let the facts stand in the way of a good story especially when they are knocking the toon. Look across the wear they have brought in 10 players and are now talking about bringing in more and they still have a c**p outfit. Buying lots of players does not make a team buying players who can develop and learn to play with each other makes a team and I like the shape we are taking at the moment trouble is we demand perfection immediately still 4 points and in the next round is not a bad start after all the doom mongers had to say before kick off. Yes we still need someone who can put the ball in the back of the net with consistency and possibly a LB. You are looking through rose coloured glasses if you think Enrique was perfect and forgetting the number of times he too was left standing and had to foul to get back in positition. All we can do as supporters is do just that whoever is on the park give them total support with as much noise as possible the away supporters at Scuny did us proud we make St James’ a fortress by putting the fear of god into the opposition with a wall of noise in support of everything back and white. All punctuation has been left out to give tiredofseeingyourblog something to do. Will we miss Barton maybe at first but then he will be like every other player who has left the club someone will take his position and win the hearts of the supporters the king is dead long live the king

Tend to agree with you regarding new players coming in this window though but… 😥 …

Would love to see the cloggy lad Peiters coming in though. I reckon a proper left back would improve the balance of the side immensely, free up Jonas more as an attacking entity, and we can swap the legendary Ryan Taylor to right back to replace Simpson…

He works hard on it and does a great job. But back to the post , losing barton is a big blow. Really felt the squad was coming together. Felt wit barton in the team it would give the likes of cabaye time to settle. But we need the likes of cabaye really to hit the ground running here on in which aint ideal. Still think wit 2 new players top 10 is still a possibilty

      (Quote)

  28. Peiters would be a fantastic singing and a snip at £6-7 mill. He’s already a full international and looks to keep his place for the next ten years. Something that Enrique will never do. He can also play centre back which will be great if Colo or Saylor get injured.

  33. Magpie Ken, I share your wish that Ashley goes bit remember he can sell to whoever he wants. I fear that too.
Apparently the hierarchy like the Arsenal model – remember when Arsenal played Real Madrid and the only Englishmen were playing for RM? Remember the crowds being known as the Highbury Library. The current frustration of fens at the direction of Arsenal is similar to our own.
I want to feel that NUFC is our club. It used to be and therefore I understand how Ken feels. Things have changed and like him It is hard for me to accept. Some say Llambias should go but it is popularity not contempt that is the kiss of death for a career at SJP – Keegan, Shearer, Carroll, Nolan and Barton.
This coming week we expect to see a LB, CF and now a MF come in. I also expect to see a goalkeeper but my confidence in the regime is so low I worry about who else will be sold. I don’t expect to see all the required additions either.
It was a special club, and can be again but not under this lot.

  36. “Newcastle will hold crunch talks with Lyon this weekend to decide the future of defender Aly Cissokho.
According to reports in France, the two sides will meet in an attempt to finally agree on a fee for the 23-year-old, who could fly to Newcastle for a
    medical on Monday.

Lyon are holding out for £9m while Newcastle are still understood to be £2m short. The French club are also keen to receive most of the money up front while Newcastle are hoping to base the fee around performance-related add ons.

But with both sides keen to reach an agreement, they hope the weekend’s meeting will help to finalise the deal.”

  37. Not just RIP team spirit – also RIP the goals too.

Can someone answer me something? How many goals will we need to score to avoid relegation? Once we have established how many goals we need I would like everyone to tell me how we will get them, who will score them and most importantly what basis are you making that prediction.

I just look at the team and think who is getting our goals?

    Strolla?
    Ba?
    Cabaye?
    Gosling?
    Best?
    Lovenkrands?

I don’t see many goals there to be honest.

  38. If Barton was so desperate to stay at Newcastle then why didn’t he just get his head down and play out of his skin to earn the contract he wanted. The problem is he’s a greedy so and so like many footballers these days. 1 good season out of 4 does not warrant a huge long term contract that he wanted. It simply wasn’t worth it for the club.

  40. Stuart79@50….not asking much there are you mate ? 😆 Why not ask how many goals do we not need to concede to avoid relegation ?…cos although I understand your question, and know where you’re coming from, how we defend as a unit is also important.

Depending upon who plays several of those players you mention would weigh in with at least 5 goals over the season, others perhaps 10 or more.

I agree we need a consistent 10+ goals a season striker, or it’s gonna be a long and frustrating season.

btw you forget HBA…if he steers clear of injury maybe he can weigh in with +5 goals this season?

      (Quote)

  41. Munich – Disagree about the defence. We could keep 38 cleans sheets this season and still go down. If you don’t score you don’t win.

Not saying we won’t score the goals, I just don’t know where their coming from.

Was such a fan of his until he started mouthing off like a spoilt school boy and proving himself to be a hypocrite when making accusations about lying.

In the end he went to QPR because nobody else wanted him even on a free. Says it all really.

In my opinion, we still have some fighters…

Colo, Taylor, Raylor, Gosling, Cabaye, Jonas, Tiote, andcthe youngsters all have some genuine fire and passion.

As much passion as Joey added, he drew far too much attention to himself, which is never good for TEAM spirit…

What we have lost is a good player on the pitch. So we need at least two in to compensate. Let’s see if it happens…

Not getting my hopes up. Ashley’s a scam artist.

You’re maybe picking up on my post about the end of the transfer window…I’m hoping that we get the players in we need, and if we do get them in I’ll be even more positive. I just have a nagging doubt about the sincerity of wor lot in charge, and how they go about their transfer business…

      (Quote)

  45. Belly – Is that fair on him? He’s only 18 and was injured most of last season. He’s a good player in the making but the very fact he’s young means he’ll be inconsistant. He needs to be bloodied in slowly like all talented young players.

I understand your concern that we haven’t got the players in we need yet. But I’m sure it will happen. I must admit it is frustrating that we seem to be dragging our feet over transfers but if we like it or not the board are simply trying to get the best deal for the club and not make daft expensive mistakes like Alan Smith. 5 days left in the transfer market is a lifetime. Plenty can happen in that time.

  49. Stuart…you’re right that if you don’t score goals you don’t win games. There again you only need to score one goal to win a game… I agree with you though that we need to be addressing the problem, would make our following of the toon more relaxing and fun.

Interestingly I took a look at the PL 2009 – 2010 Stats, and for example Everton scored 60 goals that season, and while Louis Saha scored 13 of those as top goalscorer, no-one else scored more than 9 goals for them in that season… and they finished around tenth I think…

Regarding your question how many goals do we need to avoid relegation…here are some stats from the relegated clubs from the last 3 EPL seasons. You’re maybe gonna be needing to score over 45 goals per season at least to be in with a shout ….. 😕

    Goals for 42 Against 82
    35 75
    34 66
    40 59 (Newcastle)
    28 57
