Toon set for double defensive signings?

Aly Cissokho or Erik Pieters?
Newcastle are apparently on the verge of swelling the defensive ranks by two if you believe what the foreign press are saying. The big question is which two?

With Erik Pieters rumoured to be set to complete a move to Newcastle shortly and Darnel Sittu looking likely to join us from RC Lens it could be said these are the two defenders in question.

However rumours persist over a move for out of favour Lyon left-back Aly Cissokho with rumours in France claiming that Newcastle and Lyon and are locked in negotiations and are haggling over the fee. Newcastle are said to be €2 million short of what Lyon are requesting.

I do find it hard to believe that we’ll end up with Cissokho although the player is said to be keen to join and is on the transfer list at Lyon. I’d like all three if truth be told but I think I’d be pushing the boundaries of reality a little there.

If I had a choice of Pieters and Cissokho I’d probably take Pieters purely because he can fill in at centre-back when needed. It makes sense to sign someone who can cover in a position in which we are desperately short and also fill in somewhere we could very easily be short should we suffer an injury or suspension to either Steven Taylor or Fabricio Coloccini.

This is also where Darnel Sittu will fit into the equation. He is currently on trial with us and has impressed thus far. In fact Joe Joyce believes that he is good enough to be on the fringes of the first-team already. Is he central defender number four?

Whatever happens I think I’m pretty much echoing the thoughts of many when I say that the defence needs looking at. We may have made a decent start in terms of clean sheets, but Ryan Taylor at left-back is not the long term option and we are woefully short of cover in the middle. Signing Erik Pieters and a young lad in the form of Sittu would go some way to solving that.

That just leaves us with a striker to sort out. According to The Chronicle we have representatives overseas this weekend who are trying to tie up a deal for a striker. Who said striker may be is up for debate although reports from l’Alsace in France are claiming that we’ve offered €8 million for Brest striker Nolan Roux (voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir). I’ll wait and see on that one.

Things need to move quickly now. I think we can get away without replacing Joey Barton as we have about 60 midfielders, but it’s up front and at the back where work still needs to be done. If it gets done then fair enough. It was left late but better late than never I guess. If it doesn’t and Alan Pardew is forced to go through to January with what he has then the chaps upstairs deserve everything that will get directed towards them.

Five and a bit days to go.

  1. I hope this Cissokho stuff is just conjecture.

It’s a lot of money wasted going for him as Lyon will want to make a good 9million or so out of it. I would be very disappointed paying more for him than we did for Enrique.

  2. However, contrary to the British press, the Dutch press seem to think that Erik Pieters will stay at PSV. The Dutch football news site Voetbal Primeur is carrying a report that suggests PSV’s Technical Director Marcel Brands told Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad that he now expects Pieters to remain at PSV.

  3. Agree our defence needs beefing up. Think both full back positions need to be filled and cover for centre half. Tat young french lad seems real deal , think i read he was captain of french under 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 and 19 team. I have no idea who we will bring up front but i look at that cisse from frieburg looks decent. Hopefully we get players

  4. What I will say that the last paragraph from this article is from the bottom of my heart. There is no excuse for us to not get the players in that we need, and if we don’t it won’t be acceptable and I’ll be very radged 😆

  5. I would thought didn’t we at first want a back up left back for enrique, and when he leaves,

Pieters comes in to replace him,but then ain’t we back to 1LB again?

Maybe both the LBs coming in.who knows. 😎

  6. Situ’s pretty much a done deal, right?

Anyone heard owt about his fellow triallist – William Remy? I’m guessing that NUFC want another look at him before they make a decision. Last week’s reserve game was cancelled

As for Mr Roux, here’s a couple of interesting articles featuring opinions from French scouts and journos –

  8. read somewhere Inter were planning on loaning Santon out to an Italian club…. maybe we’ll take him on loan?

  9. I think we could see a busy end to the transfer window to come from Newcastle, but I think there will be an equal number of players to leave and come in over the next few days. (I’m not trying to be negative 😈 )

Ranger has again pressed the self destruct button and I think the club will either release him or send him out on loan to Birmingham (if Chrissy H will still have him)

I think Perch (if any1 will take him) will leave probably on loan with a view to a permanent move. He has no future with us and apparently he has already said he wants to drop back down to the championship.

I also wouldn’t be surprised to see Smith move on. He’s on high wages and there has been rumours all summer that he will be sold.

I think (hope) we will get three in –> a LB, ST and Situ. I’d like to see more even if none of the above leave but i cant see it happening.

Wont stop me dreaming though…….. 😀

  17. Aha same thought as me. I would have thought this is the perfect season for him to get a few games under his belt and push on. Pardew doesn’t fancy him? Don’t see why not…

  18. i watched sissoko play the othey day when leon played oba martins new club rubiks cubo and he looked out of place.

his passing was bad and thats being polite and as a left back he defended more like a centre back when cubiks were making a run down the left leaving two rubins wingers to stand un-marked in the box. if the cross had have been any good there was two players standing unmarked where a left back should have been marking his men shouting for cover.
instead sisoko was standing ball watching like hewas already on his way here.

im hoping that was the case or we are just about to purchase a defender who leaves the door wide open when he should be marking his line and defends closer to the full backs rather than marking his men on the wing andedge of the box.

what is the point in buying a left back for him to feel more comfortable playing in a space already occupied.

lets hope this was one off as what i seen of him was on par with perch.
    not good at all.

i will be the first to say though this was the first time i saw him play. but whats the saying about first impressions?

i would.nt be at all bothered if all 3 of the players you named left the club.
Smith,Ranger and Perch are,nt needed at the club for different reasons.
Colocinni is a different matter tho.
i know you did,nt mention him,but i think we will lose another big player in this window.and Seville want him.
They can afford him now they have the money from the Mata transfer.
Its something to watch out for as the days go by..
    i hope im wrong.
As far as incoming signings are concerned,i would like Peiters and Situ but ive got more sense than to think Cashley will spend any money, even tho we know it would make sense to strengthen our team to save another relegation,Fatman just does,nt get it.

    IFs,WHENs and MAYBEs.
Why does,nt Fatso stop taking the p,,, and pay the 1 or 2 million extra required to get our targets in.after all,its not as though we are skint.
Your just a GFB who is milking the club and its supporters for all you can get Ashley.
    JUST GO.
