Will Sammy fulfil the potential that Shola didn’t?

Two Ameobi's....
There is little difference when you look at the two Amoebi’s. Both of them look the same, they both have the same gangly style and elastic legs. They even have the same initials if you go by Shola’s more widely used shorter version of his first name.

The similarities end there though.

It’s fair to say that Sammy and Shola are completely different players both in terms of style and ability and also in terms of them playing in different positions. Shola is of course a striker, loosely, whilst Sammy seems to be more of a winger. Shola can appear lazy, slow and disinterested at times whilst Sammy is full of running and has pace to burn. As you can see there are plenty of differences on the pitch which is essentially where it matters of course.

It’s early days for Sammy but he has definitely impressed in his limited appearances so far. It all started off at the tail end of last season when he impressed against Chelsea after coming on a sub, and to the younger Ameobi’s credit he has built on that and has nudged himself even closer to the first team with his recent showings.

The goal against Scunthorpe the other night was exceptional. He beat three men with pace, power and trickery before smashing a long rage drive into the back of the net. I can’t remember the last time I saw Shola do the same thing. It wasn’t the only highlight though as I remember another instance from that same game where Sammy had the ball and managed to come away from three tackles with it still glued to his feet.

If Sammy can keep his head level and keep on improving he will have a very very bright future ahead of him. This is where, love or hate him, Shola can come into his own and help out his brother.

In fairness to Shola he is about as level-headed as you will get, apart from when it comes to hats in all different sizes and different colours. Say what you want about him but few can match Shola’s professionalism. If he can get his younger brother to follow the same path then Sammy can go from strength to strength.

In fact there is already a sense of professionalism instilled in young Sammy. I remember at Leeds when the crowd were asking for a wave from Sammy only for the request to be ignored. He went on Twitter after the game and apologised to fans for not waving but insisted that he didn’t want the boss to think he was a big time Charlie. Nile Ranger take note.

Fair play to Sammy. He is forcing the issue himself through his performances on the field which absolutely the right way to go about things. Sure there are still some rough edges to his game, but I get the sense that he is willing to spend the hours working on them and improving. Isn’t that all we can ask for?

Keep it going Sammy!

  1. Is Sammy left footed or both footed? (whatever thats called?)
‘cus he got some power with his right the other day.
Nice. Plus a great smile

  2. Apart from the goal, what really impressed me about Sammy at Scunthorpe was an incident where he kept fighting for the ball up against the touchline against 2 scunnies. And emerged with the ball.

  3. Early days, shouldn’t expect too much from him too soon. On that note I recon this will be Sholas season for us. 😆

Seriously though it’s difficult not to be pleasantly suprised. He seems to have pace, two-feet and reliable control. Shola has some control but if he is the LX model Sammy is the GTI with all the extras. 😛

  4. i think he will be a great player in a few years and be much better than shola allthough thats not hard

  5. Shola must have done something to still be in the team 12 years on, The sad thing is that we did this to him when he was trotted out for intertoto matches with a fcuked hip, I remember the shola that owned barcelona on their own patch, Used to run with ball and take people on, The leverkusen match.

Sad watching him but we praised shearer for adapting his game after serious injuries and shola has done this as well just he was pretty **** with a bit of flair to start with and now hes just plain **** but i wouldnt be the same without him hes like a mange ridden old dog who you cant bring yourself to have put down…

  6. Toonsy,

He burgled his own house and took it as loot. 😆

Think Sami has a great future and the thing I like about him the most is his attitude to the game.

Here’s hoping he lives his dream and sticks around for a decade or so at the toon.

  7. Toonsy…though he frustrates maddingly at times, I have a soft spot for Shola the makkem slayer. I also think that young Sammy has everything it takes to be a huge hit at Newcastle. He seems to have a steady head on his shoulders, is fast, two footed and fights on the pitch. If he can continue his development and stay clear of injury we could have a real gem on our hands, and a Geordie too !!

It’s still early days for Sammy, but the Toon should be proud to have two such dedicated brothers as professionals wearing the black and white stripes. I would love it if young Sammy made a good go of it, no controversy, disloyalty, tweeting, gangster stuff with this young man, and a likeable lad too.

  8. he is better full stop..tomaz i dont wont 2 see loven and best on the bench 2gether…pardew has given these 2 clowns enough playing time in the first 3 games..best i will take with vuckic and sammy on the bench…the rest midfield players with 1 defender…these 2 clowns wont change a game and should be only on if all are strikers are injuried…waste of space and time..can see them both leaving with simpson..if we are defo in for both full backs..then their must be something in the story about simpson leaving..2 pay for both…

  9. Shola is a hero in my eyes. Top bloke.

Get a statue up of him up in the Grainger market.

Like Fulham’s Michael Jackson one but Ameobi style

  10. It was “only” Scunthorpe, but I was really impressed the way young Sammy and Vukic just got mucked into it. Young Vukic looked really strong, hope they both stick clear of injuries cos we have two real gems on our hands with those two..

Well done to the back room staff and coaches for bringing them on.

On the bairns, I’d really like to know wtf is going on with Kadar !

Get young Fergie thrown in there and things are looking good. To get so many Academy players knocking on the doors of the first team is immense…oops Krul… there’s another one.

Could this perhaps be our group similar to the ManU group who came through together..Beckham, Giggs, Scholes, **** etc….? I can see PL games this season when we will have 3-4 academy players on the pitch at the same time…not bad.. 😆

      (Quote)

  11. And you know what’s great about Shola – if Sammy makes himself a huge hit – the biggest smile will belong to Shola. Got to love Shola

      (Quote)

  12. Sammy and Vuckic should be on the bench for Fulham. League 1 or not they were fantastic. Really talented players, should be getting more first team chances at the expense of McLoven and even Best/Ba. Vuckic looks like the sort of physically strong young player that could get a chance and then be in the team for the rest of the season, fingers crossed his injuries are behind him. Marveux just needs game time as well.

  13. Stardust @ 20 – Absolutely bang on. Shola has already said as much as that himself. Top man 🙂

  14. Dont remember a better showing from a really young toon player who had not yet made his name, in a long time . . sure HBA was great, but he was kinda already established .. i actually couldnt blv my eyes the way he was battling, skilful – don’t recall a single wasted ball, everything was positive .. BUZZZZZZZZZZ!!!

      (Quote)

  15. Yeh Stardust, have to agree .. got to luv Shola .. you just know he loves playing for the toon …… not like some others, who incidentally just does not seem to be a happy lad at the bindippers .. HWTL

      (Quote)

  16. And would add, in this splurge of comments, that vuckic did look classy – was kind of worried we had built him up way above the reality but, save for a few weak first few minutes when wasnt sure if he was going to be fully committed, he really got stuck in and was confident around the pitch .. nice

      (Quote)

  17. Yep Toonsy – he a model pro – similar to Paul Scholes oin that respect.

Got to love what the clubs done for our youth set up.

Also – just another thing to ponder. It struck me today that the same people crying for big money signings are the same ones that clapped like seals as FFS pretended to buy players (on the never never). Well seals – you got your fish and now you have to pay for them – if you buy blue fin tuna on credit cards and you’ve got no money – you can’t buy blue fin tuna forever – some day you’ve got to eat mackerel to pay back your debt and be able to afford blue fin again 😆 here – catch a beach ball .

      (Quote)

  18. Yeap Stardust its right .. see Wenger put in a sensible bid for Cahill – he knows fine and full well the value of money .. costs involved are way overinflated and we all know what happens next ..

  19. stardust im down to tuna flakes, not even tuna chunks. 😆 Oh I long for the blue fin tuna steaks again. 😀

  20. I also think young Lua Lua will come on leaps and bounds this season under the tuttalage of Gus Poyet, and with a strong Championship season under his belt.

  21. DJG – 😆

Toonpipes – and did you hear every pundit slagging Wenger down saying he must be worth 15 to 20mn – its these thick mongy football pundit come managers that have our clubs in a mess. Businesses need tight financial control and should be ran by experienced business people. Football men have ruined our game to the point its acceptable to pee half a billion up the wall to win a trophy in the name of “sport”

Wish the debt success renters would pee of to a debt crippled league of their own.

      (Quote)

  22. Yeah totally right Stardust .. its hilarious that these totally ignorant people are allowed to comment on business when they have no f ucking idea about that side of things .. in majority of cases the football manager has to manage the football, perhaps Wenger is one who could be allowed to have some say in financial matters as he is smart enough – but he is the exception

      (Quote)

  23. Munich Mag, i know a couple of Brighton season ticket holders and they rave about lualua .. slightly concerned that he is perhaps a little too small .. altho Messi aint a monster ..

      (Quote)

  24. Stardust@30, the money being hoyed around in football is one of the things that get Ulli Hoeness, Kaiser Franz and his mates totally radged at FC Bayern. FC Bayern have no debt, are superbly run, have millions in the bank, but cannot compete with the likes of Chelski, Citeh, Barca and Real Madrid who hoy money around like crazy.

      (Quote)

  25. Lads I agree about the money side of things, and I agree with clubs running within their means, but it’s pointless being the only ones who do it when everyone else just doesn’t seem bothered.

      (Quote)

  26. Toonpipes, if he’s good enough he’s big enough. Marveaux and him must be around the same height ?

      (Quote)

  27. ‘thick mongy football pundits’ hahahahaha … Aye MunichMag, and it needs controlling somehow …… thing is that there has always been one club with more cash than another – and plenty that was bunged around or ill-gotten, just that was smaller amounts of cash involved!

      (Quote)

  28. jabba has no fear, not now hes just bought it,the brand like, now we know where some of that 35mil went 😯 😀

      (Quote)

  29. Yeah but Toonsy, you would have to say that it is ok spending the money, so long as it is spent on the right player .. that is critical. Have to take more care and attention over the employment of a player – not just his skills that are important, it is his mentality / personality etc .. these are huge investments, but you can end up with a total t wat who doesnt actually care .. would have to think that MA is ensuring that the players purchased are checked for their sporting prowess and their personality/mental strength etc etc which is critical .. otherwise the cash is not well spent and you end up getting relegated. So yes cash has to be spent, but spent wisely. And in general, the costs involved are inflated – it just aint right some of the money spent

      (Quote)

  30. I see Fatty’s Financial advisor is having a rant 😕 yeah the money men should look after money, but they should get footy men in to look after footy

    You say;
Wenger is one who could be allowed to have some say in financial matters as he is smart enough – but he is the exception.

Well that’s handy. Either managers are smart enough or not.

I wasn’t aware Wenger was a businessman as well 😀

    Poor point, poorly made imo.

Also, Stardust. You say the same thing over and over again, yet don’t listen to a word others are saying.

Who is asking the club to spend beyond their means? The last time I heard, Ashley was going to reinvest the Carroll money and since then we have Barton, Nolan and Jose off the books. Thats well in excess of £40m.

All we ask is for that money to strengthen the team because as it stands we are desperate for several players in key positions and we’ve played 3 games already.

On another note. I can see the attendances regularly dipping below 40k this season if we don’t start to play more attractive football which Patsy Pardew promised.

I know one person who won’t be going tomorrow. SoL or SJP next game Dust Sheet. 😆 😆 😆 😆

    You hate the truth 😆

  40. BB…if Pardew said that, it probably sounds sensible like bearing in mind the amount of new players, and foreign ones at that, who have been added to the squad.

    Not to forget they’ll have benefitted from a great pre-season too….. 🙄 🙄

  42. The problem I see, and I think it’s valid, is wondering where we go from here. I mean lets get theoretical.

We’ve trimmed the wage boll and got rid of high earners and say the lads we have got in flourish and develop and so on. What happens then?

They get lured away and we start again? Or do we suddenly start paying them more?

Sooner or later if we are to ever encroach on Europe we’re either going to have to get very lucky or start paying Euro wages.

  43. Toonsy @ 58 hopefully the c@nt will sell up to someone that wants to be here rather than just using us as an advertisment board for sports direct.

  46. Dave – Essentially I don’t think Ashley is doing much wrong aside from communication and stuff plus a bit less tight-fistedness, although I wonder how much of that is Llambias. I mean he ran us as a business when we needed it to be run as a business, but that work will be done soon and we won’t have many of the real high earners left.

I’m not even asking for megabucks signings on huge wages, but there are clear spaces in our squad that need addressing which is where it’s all falling down for me. If we address them then fair enough but if your business has a failing somewhere you need to address it, and at the moment we haven’t.

  49. Baba Vanga (31 January 1911 – 11 August 1996), was a blind Bulgarian mystic who married the Great World Wrestling champion Les Kellet originally from Bradford and moved to their marital home in Gateshead in the early 60’s.
Her followers were convinced that she possessed paranormal abilities.
Vanga would often sit in the colliery streets of Gateshead making predictions on all sorts of subjects. Her notoriety was enhanced by the fact she had no eyes.
Vanga and Kellet had one child called Meg. Meg followed in her mothers footsteps by becoming a well known psychic and TV personality named Mystic Meg.
Mystic Meg married ex Newcastle United player Bobby Shinton and they lived in the Blue House on Newcastle’s Town Moor next to a roundabout on the commuter route in Newcastle. This is commonly known as the Blue House roundabout and is a well known location for many commuting Geordies.

Meg and Bobby had one child, called Troy Stavers Shinton, (later dropped the name Shinton as he wanted to find fame in his own right). Troy inherited the psychic genes of his Grandmother Baba and mother Meg. He would often post on the Newcastle United blogs, providing accurate predictions on all subjects concerning his favourite club.

Troy would often be seen at SJP wearing Grandad Kellets wrestling trunks and boots and would entertain the crowds with his pinpoint accuracy when the next goal was coming.
It is strongly believed that Troy is working for the Secret Services and is a former member of the Special Air Service.
He is busy writing his own book which is expected to rival the predictions of Nostradamus.

  50. Toonsy @ 64 I haven’t heard of anyone asking for Mega bucks being spent, like you I just want decent investment, like we have needed a quality striker from Jan and we are still waiting.
BB I wouldn’t say no to an owner like that but tbh would rather just have someone that would want the club for what it is and would invest in us and communicate with us their customers, and treat us and the players with a bit of respect

      (Quote)

  51. Toonsy, we already pay euro wages, just ask any of the new foreign lads who have signed, or the ones sitting with an easy jet ticket waiting to come for a medical and sign, seems like that are all very don’t think that really is an issue. The problem is, we have always tried to buy the fairy that sits on top of the Christmas tree, rather than building a tree with solid dependable branches before we put the finishing touch on the top. We are doing that now and a lot of people don’t seem to like it.

      (Quote)

  52. Mikesbestmate – True, but then what happens? They play to their undoubted potential and ****** off to another club who will pay more money? Then what???
