Newcastle 2-1 Fulham – Video highlights

Just a quick replay of the 2-1 victory over Fulham yesterday. These are only brief highlights but they are all I can find.

All in all it’s not a bad start to life in the Premier League this season. Two goals from Leon Best helped carry on what is an unbeaten start for us this season, which is something I don’t think many of us envisaged in fairness.

The problem is that no matter how good the results have left me feeling I’m still actually waiting for the inevitable kick in the nuts. There were some real signs of that team gelling yesterday and it would be a crying shame if they weren’t added to in the final couple of days of the transfer market.

That is going to be the thing that dominates the news for the next few days as this latest transfer window winds down. And with no club football to look forward it’s going to mean that there is an awful lot of time to sit back and analyse things.

To me it’s pretty clear though – a left-back and a striker are required as a minimum.

Well done to the lads for yesterday. It was another hard fought win that showed balls and determination, but if we miss a trick in terms of signing the two players we need then they will have every right to feel let down, the manager will have every right to feel let down, and the fans will have every right to feel let down.

Rant over…

  1. Great victory…. Cabaye was fantastic although he gased out a little torward the end of the game…
and you have to hand it to Best… he get’s a lot of stick on here “as not being good enough” but he keeps scoring goals.. He had a great game, worked hard and deserved his goals…

Also, two weeks in a row, I have called the correct result and scores.. 😀
I will let you know the result of our next fixture a little closer to kick off 😆

  2. Up at 4:00 a.m., brother? Ouch!

Posted this on the prior thread but am curious what others think:

I also feel like Best is getting seriously short shrift. Not that he’s a superhero or anything like it, but considering he had perfectly good goal disallowed against Scunthorpe and his two against Fulham, I think (if Lee Ryder’s correct) that’s seven goals in 14 starts for us.

If nothing else, I feel like that’s earned him removal from the transfer list, if not a starting position. And yet, I don’t see many defenders or people reconsidering their position on him.

Is he Leo Messi? No. But has he earned something like a real, regular chance? I think so.

  3. i reckon we will lose against qpr..all this good feeling is just a build up for the dissapointment when we lose against newly promoted team.
joey barton will poach a goal and all hell will break loose and ultimately bobby shinton no9 will be resurrected and say “i told you so”

  4. Dubtoon – Same. Can’t see it. Santon is one of the best young wing backs in Europe. I can’t see him either coming here or anyone getting him for £5 million 😕

  5. Santon is right footed full back that can play at LB.
    WHY?
Wots the fuggin snag with getting Pieters? Wages ❓
Is it too much to get a Left footed Fullback ffs 😈

It was clear yesterday when Raylor got down the wing but had to cut back inside to get a right footed cross in, (which was ****!) as to why we need a left footer.

    Aaaaaaaarrrrrggggghhhhhh ❗ 😕

  8. @Beardsleys boots

Phillip Lahm (IMO best current FB in the world) was a right footed LB when he started his career, and if I am not wrong he has shifted to that side again…

  9. BB – In fairness Santon has played at left back for Italy and inter. He wouldn’t do that if he looked weaker on that side.

He is a very good player and has been touted for years as one of the best defensive prospects in Europe. This is why Italy capped him so early as I believe he gas dual nationality although I might be wrong on that.

I can’t see it happening but it would be good if it did.

I swear some of you could fall in a fanny factory and complain its too moist 🙄

  10. I can’t…guessing it’s something to do with my settings on the laptop?

“IF” he were to come I’d still like another LB, Dunno why fatboy won’t just splash the cash on Pieters lb/cb then this kid rb/lb, sorted. 🙄

  14. Beardsleysboots, i am right footed and played in both full back positions, its easier in some ways when your left back as the opposition find it hard cutting inside onto your stronger foot and you end up keeping them wide where they should be, hope this makes sense, but its not that big of a deal.
I watch Simpson and he is lacking in any positional sense, he either gets too tight or allows the winger acres of space to round around him and yesterday he allowed the opposition to come in behind and out jump him for free headers on goal without a challenge, he is too static, his movement and awareness is poor.
I only played local league football and dont profess to be an expert , but we could do a lot better in both full back positions.

I agree, Simpson going through a tough time, so I’ll cut him some slack, but he has too many weaknesses for a Premier League fullback.

As you say, he is positionally bad, had allows the opposing winger too much space, but more than anything…
When he is in possession on the ball, he looks like a rabbit in the highlights, and has no idea what to do.

I think in an ideal world, he would be no more than a squad player.

If we could get Santone to play on the right and Pieters to play on the left, that would be ideal, but it will never happen.

    80% chance we get neither.
If we get one, 100% chance we wont buy anyone else.

Its sad, because we are, a two decent fullbacks and a quality striker away from challenging the top six/seven.

With out current squad, we are looking top 12.
