Santon set for quick return?

Pardew think Santon will be OK.
Newcastle have been boosted with the news that Davide Santon’s knee injury might not turn out to be as bas as was first feared.

Alan Pardew revealed in the Sunday Sun that the Italian U21 international could even be in line to make his debut against Blackburn next weekend.

It was feared that Davide Santon would need to undergo an operation to “clean out” his knee joint, although perhaps operation is not the appropriate way of putting. The procedure would have involved keyhole surgery which would have meant that the recovery time would have been significantly less compared to a conventional operation.

Fingers crossed neither scenario will have to be used now that Santon has had fluid drained from his knee leaving Pardew feeling optimistic over the fitness of the young Italian.

“He’s had fluid taken from his knee and we think, fingers crossed, that will be OK. Maybe he’ll be available for next weekend,” Pardew told the Sunday Sun.

“If that doesn’t cure the problem we think he’ll probably have an operation in there where we just go in and tidy it up. It’s not a cartilage, just a little bit of scar tissue.”

I don’t know why I’m hopeful as, quite frankly, Newcastle have a shocking record of player injuries. Maybe it’s that previous that is making me feel ultra cynical about this supposed positive injury news?

I fully believe that having fluid on the knee is not a good thing. It got there somehow so if you don’t remove the cause of it then it will just come back. I’m not a doctor, but that seems relatively straight-forward to me.

Whilst I’d like to believe that Santon will be right as rain after his little fluid draining session (enjoy your dinner folks!) I have a sneaking suspicion that he’ll still have to undergo an operation. Put it this way, I’m not putting money on Santon making his debut against Blackburn although I’d love it if he did.

It’s not all doom and gloom though remember. Hatem Ben Arfa is still pencilled in to make his comeback against Nottingham Forest on Tuesday evening so, hopefully, we’ll be one player up by the time Steve Kean brings his funky chicken family to St James’ Park next Saturday.

You never know, maybe we may even be two players up!

  1. Can’t wait to see him in action.
Anyone watching the game? Who’d take Carroll back for 15mill? Dont even think he’s worth that anymore haha.
I would be so happy if the scum won today. 4th place with our next game Blackburn home? Yes please/

  2. Carroll should be booked for that 😛

Ref is right on at Liverpool. Good old Dogleash. You can’t criticise the establishment without some form of retribution Kenneth. You aren’t what you once were 😉

  3. well that sounds like good news, but not hold me breath.
    Fingers crossed.

Will take a stoke/scum draw tbh.
Dont want the unwashed getting ideas above their station.
Hopefully they are trying to beat that lowest points record 😆

  4. To be fair,

Liverpool don’t play to Carroll’s strengths and when they do, the fans chastise the tactics, manager and team.

I have seen Carroll make more challenges in midfield in this game than the rest of the Liverpool team put together.

L’poo not pressing the ball and getting stuck in.

  6. can anybody confirm if Vuckic will return to training this week.

Then there will be no need to have Guthrie and Lovenkrands anywhere near the first team

  7. Very common thing to happen if you have had previous knee surgery, body over compensates for lack of movement in knee while you`re crocked but can continue to do so for one or two years after surgery.

From experience it goes one of two ways, can drain fluid if and when it happens again, just means a week out to let swelling go down, but if it happens continuously involves simple surgery to fix it, four weeks out max all goes well.

It is a small risk to play on in case you get a very bad tackle, can dislocate knee cap with too much fluid sitting on the knee, so to be honest I would expect him to have surgery on it at some stage, but it is not as serious as it sounds, just sore to play on and can cause swelling at times.

  8. just two days ago AP said that this santon injury was definatley not related to pervious.. now they say its scar tissue…. i think like we all suspect, we had better take this fast recovery with a pinch of salt.

i wonder when will the loserfool fans call for their so called King kenny head. 🙂

IMO,Dalglish isn’t a great manager,he may won the league title with blackburn(cause of rich owner and shearer),and previous wins under liverpool,he might just lost the touch.

  10. Thanks Keith for that, reassuring. Can’t help but be a bit nervous about these things as a Newcastle fan.

CC – did Pardew say that or was it the club statement? Either way it’s good news and sounds like something that probably wasn’t there at the time of the medical but can reoccur every now and then

  11. both AP and club said it Dubtoon. i will hope for the best of course but as with everything that comes out the club these days.. will just wait and see as even though we are doing well, they are lying cnuts still.

  12. We should not rush him back , if it needs surgery then do it now and let him start getting back to fitness . Raylor is doing a decent job at the minute but would rather have Santon back for the big games against the 2 manchesters and Chelsea . Against the likes of Blackburn i now have enough faith in Raylor , and the more he plays in that position the better he will get .

    Totally lost his form.

I mean it. . . I get the feeling some fans just don’t get this Geordie / Mackem thing.

I can’t even listen to their accent for more than five minutes before I start wretching!

  17. Sunderland were not going to lose forever. Stoke, on the other hand were getting results their performances didn’t merit. Look at their last game against Liverpool, Should have lost 4 or 5-0, but ended up winning 1-0.

I guess that means we will have the best defensive record by the end of the day, eh? 🙂

  18. Troy you talk utter garbage 99% of the time, mate. This is when you are not talking about yourself. Nee body wants Sunderland to win but by them winning they have helped us. A bittersweet victory for them.

The only people that think that are casual viewers. We are far better off without Nolan now. He and Carroll had a good p lose one yoartnership, so if you lose one you may as well get shot of the other.

Barton could still offer something to our starting XI, but he needed to go if we are to become a more fluent, continental side.

I eagerly await HBA, Santon and Marveaux breaking into the first team. That’s when we will have a proper side capable of beating anyone on our day.

Strange. A few have already stated they would rather see the mackems beat Stoke.

If you agree, I would be surprised if you live in the northeast?

    So please explain?

  26. Nolan said that the club offered him a deal but changed their mind in the summer. In hindsight the club have done the right thing. You do not waste multi millions of pounds on some notion of sentimentality. All the players leaving have tried to rub dirt on the owners but imo they have just highlighted their own greed and shown me what a bubble players live in. People focus on us getting players in in cheaper wages like this is somehow a bad thing. They ignore the fact that we have signed better younger players. I grow bored of the bashing of the owners, not because I am a fan of them but because it is boring.

Heard today that Torres will be going out on loan in January. There’s our striker in Jan. He’s just scored a cracker against the Manc Yanks too. 😉

The fact you find an important issue like the regime as boring, just about sums you up.

Still never answered my question. I suspect you are either not a Geordie or don’t live in the northeast.

Which is it or is it both?

  32. Ice and others. So, hypothetically, if we were in 5th and say, arsenal were in 4th (I know fantasy football). We had say 50 points and Arsenal had 52.
The games on the last day of the season are us at home to say, Wolves and Arsenal away to 5under1and. We are a lunch time kick off and win. We need Sunderland to get something out of their game so we can get CL footie.

You can’t tell me you wouldn’t want them to win. 🙂

Like I said fantasy football, but just sometimes you need you take a bit of pain to get what you want.

  38. My accent probably is affected a little. Not sure how this effects my judgement though? I love the derby days too much to wish Sunderland to lose every game ever and go out of the league as some of you clearly wish. Winning the derbies and being more successful than them is what I want. God knows what some of you lads want.

  39. Micky…..but thats end of the season when you know exactly how a result would affect things.”Hypothetically” come the end of the season we finished 9 points above Stoke and the scum finish 2 points above us, would todays result have been better for us? 😉

  40. @Troy I remember these arguments on the .com years ago and how destructive they were. Ignorant folk like you driving a wedge between our fans. You are worse than Ashley and Llambias in your attitude to the club.

To answer your question and provide you with more ammo, I was born in the QE where my mother worked. I guess this makes me a Gateshead lad which would make me almost a Mackem in your books. I will allow you to conveniently ignore the fact that I grew up in Ravensworth terrace, literally a stones throw away from the ground.

  41. lace.. i can say with hand on my heart that i hate everything sunderland and if all of them dropped dead tmrw or sunderland blew up i would treat my missus to a night out and toast their demise. its fair to say i dont much like them. It goes even beyond footy to me, i just hate them all, end of.
