It is understood that Jackie Milburn will also be honoured in the same way with the two statues being located on St James’ Boulevard in time for the Olympic competition next year.
I realise I’m probably going to get hammered for this as people will read this line and go into meltdown without listening to the reasoning behind it, but I personally feel that there are a other people ahead of Alan Shearer who deserve to be commemorated in statue form.
One of them being Joe Harvey. The term legend is thrown around easily these days, and whilst it mustn’t be forgotten that Shearer was a playing legend for us, it must also not be forgotten what the likes of Joe Harvey and others have done for us in days gone by.
Harvey spent 21 years at the club as a player and then as a manager. He played 224 games for us and won two FA Cups, one in 1951 closely followed by another in 1952. After retiring in 1953 he then became a trainer and watched from the sidelines as the team lifted yet another FA Cup in 1955.
Sitting on the sidelines was to be a a recurring theme for Harvey as he spread his wings and took to management. Brief spells managing Barrow and Workington went with varying fortunes but it wasn’t long before he returned to NUFC and in 1962 he was confirmed as manager – seven years after he left.
He then led us to promotion back to Division One before taking us to Europe and bringing home the Fairs Cup in 1969. That remains our last “top” honour although he did guide us to another FA Cup final in 1974 which we lost to Liverpool before resigning in 1975. In total he managed 591 games at Newcastle United.
I’m not saying that Shearer isn’t a legend. He is. The stats back him up and the service he gave us over ten years was fantastic. To me he kept us up on our own sometimes and helped us mix it with the best for a brief few years. His time will come.
However in a week where people have been keen to point out the history and nostalgia of Newcastle United, would it not make sense to honour one of the older all time greats? A great who had a direct influence on three of our last four major honours?

Mark I often get pissed off when someone doesn’t reply to a txt I have sent, but i’m sometimes guilty of not replying to txt.
My biggest pet hate is people that are late for an appointment I had a client last thurs that was just over an hr late and I finished him off at the usual time and he asked me how much he owed me and I told him ‘ the usual’ so he handed me my money and said ‘ but I only got 2 hrs tonight ‘ I just told him that he still pays for the hr that I was waiting for him 😉 he will know not to be late again 😀 .

Totally agree – although weve moved on Harvey was a time of people doing the job they loved, chairmen were more inclined to give them a lot more time …….. I’ll always remember shearer as a great player for us especially having met him before he became a bit of a **** – cant help thinking we became a one dimensional team in his latter years tho

Been thinking about Obertoon and Marveux being out. If we want two defensive wingers what about playing Santon? Gotta be better than starting with Gosling, Guthrie or Sammy there? It would be like having a Jonas on both flanks and then we could have Ba and Ben Arfa so it’s like 5 in midfield. This makes more sense to me if we are gonna be spending most of the time defending our half. Surely it’s about time he played a game, it’s the middle of November and he’s played like 15 minutes.

DJG – You’ve just touched on a point which I’m writing about currently. People seem to be suggesting that Ben Arfa should be playing, based on nothing but a few fleeting appearances. I feel that by playing him now, when everyone else is doing fine, would do more harm than good.
Don’t get me wrong, his quality will shine through in the end and he will no doubt take his place in the team eventually, but it’s playing a dangerous game throwing him in there.

I definately agree with you Ed. Yeh shearer is a hero for Newcastle on the pitch, but off the field I think he is a ****. One of the most boring, dull and miserable guys areound just watch MOTD. If you notice he dosent have much positive thing s to say about his beloved team these days apart from ‘oh well the geordies know they are not going to finish top 4. Sour grapes! Oh and something else before everyone kicks off about this. If BiG AL was such a hero and loved the club so much why didnt he manage the club for nothing instead of the 8 million he was paid? I would of managed it for nothing and go the same result! That 8 million might of been more benefit to us in the long run. Yeh so im my opinion there are more deserving toon hero’s than Al.

Joe Harvey deserves the statue more ,the rewards shearer got were far greater, a friend who worked for united when they tried to sign shearer stated he wanted more than they would pay.We cannot forget his contribution to the club on the pitch for all those years.But Joe did it on and off the pitch and did something big al never, picked up silverware as captain and manager. 🙂

I think it’s a travesty that Joe Harvey has not been properly remembered by the club when you consider his contribution that I’m sure is unprecedented in the club’s history. I would definetley prefer to see a statue of Harvey way before Shearer. Yes Shearer was a legend, but as has been pointed out he was paid hansomely for his efforts both in adulation from the fans to keep his ego stoked and financially. What next, have a statue of Kevin Keegan? Wasn’t he a hero in terms of playing legend and manager? Didn’t he help stop us fading into oblivion? Not convinced by this idea by the Council or whoever.
