Simpson happy to stay at Newcastle

Simpson keen on St James' stay
Danny Simpson has reiterated his desire to stay at Newcastle, although he admits that it could take some time to sort out a new deal.

Simpson returns to Old Trafford for the first time since he left three-and-a-half years ago this weekend and claims that it would be nice to prove a point to Sir Alex Ferguson.

Perhaps more importantly however he will be wanting to prove a point to NUFC who appear to be using the sledgehammer approach to contract negotiations once more. A new deal has been mentioned for some time now and with Simpson only having 18 months of his current deal remaining time is starting to become an issue. The longer it drags on the more likely it is that Simpson will go elsewhere in my opinion.

The problem, as ever, appears to be wages. Danny Simpson wants parity with the likes of Steven Taylor according to his agent and obviously the club don’t feel that he is worth that. It would appear the two parties will need to find some middle ground if a deal is to be concluded although Simpson is keen to extend his time at St James’ Park.

“I’m happy here and they want me to stay but contracts don’t get sorted overnight,” Simpson told Alan Brazil’s Sports Breakfast earlier.

He continued: “My family is here and it’s a great time to be here. The city is buzzing and I think our form can continue. We think we can go to Old Trafford and get something, we took a lot of confidence from the Manchester City game.”

“I think we’ve done well and we don’t want to stop. We have targets, we want to keep going and we are confident we can go to Old Trafford and try to win.”

Alan Pardew is keen for the former Manchester United man to stay but it appears that his patience is running out a bit with Simpson. He said:

“We’ve made Danny an offer which I think is a good offer, if I’m honest. Like everything it’s very difficult to understand value when you’re a young player. You see other players at other football clubs and you hear rumours, etc etc.”

“I think Danny should commit to the football club because he’s done terrifically well here and the one thing I do know about young players in the Premier League, you can get lost quite quickly.”

“He doesn’t want to do that, he’s found himself a nice berth in the club. He’s keeping out Davide Santon, who we’ve paid very good money for; he’s a new father, he’s doing particularly well.”

“Sometimes the grass isn’t always greener and I would advise him to get his contract done ASAP. Danny needs to remember he’s playing and getting valuable experience in the best defence in the Premier League.”

I really don’t know where I stand on this. One one hand I can see Simpson’s point about getting a decent payrise. On the other I disagree that he is worth the same as someone like Steven Taylor who has played Premier League football for a number of years. Plus there is that fact for me anyway, that Simpson is easily replaceable and it wouldn’t be too hard to source a younger, cheaper….. You get the point.

To me Simpson seems to have a very high opinion of himself. I watch him on Twitter ‘rewtweeting’ any mention of him and England, like he genuinely believes he should be there. Not a chance. He may be the fourth, fifth or whatever best English right-back, but it sounds less impressive when you realise that there are only five or six in the league. He won’t get in ahead of Glen Johnson, Micah Richards or Kyle Walker anyway.

In the grand scheme of things this is just another game of contract cat and mouse and whilst I don’t really agree with Alan Pardew bringing it into the public domain it’s worth pointing out that it was only done AFTER Simpson’s agent did much the same thing. One thing is for sure, and that is that Danny Simpson should look at the form book.

If he does he will see that he won’t get things all his own way.

  1. That’s what I thought Hitman. I would sell Simpson in January. We’ve had a good start he all of a sudden wants a pay rise but if we started badly would he offer to take a pay cut? At his court pretending he couldn’t afford a driver that really pissed me off too he clearly can, even Pardew said on the radio.

  2. I think the lad hears those **** England rumors. Sign the contract or go play for the likes of Bolton and see how much they offer you

      (Quote)

  3. I understand wanting a pay rise, but how much of a percentage increase would it be for him to be close to what Saylor earns? I’d guess about 300% increase, which would be a ridiculous thing for any of us to expect if we were just continuing the same job with the same employer

  4. So he bought a Bentley on his current contract and was offered an improved one which he hasn’t accepted and wants more. He should realise that no other club wanted him except us

  5. Didnt I read somewhere, hes ‘only’ on 10 to 15 k a week, comparede to the others on about 40k ❓ ❓

      (Quote)

  6. AndrewT – I don’t quite buy that parity with Saylor thing. I do think it would have been used with a view of settling somewhere less but you know what the club are like.

  7. Walker, Johnson, Richards, Jones, Naughton, all better English players in my opinion…

He seems a decent lad, but he has far too high opinion of himself as a player.

He is an average premiership player but has obvious weaknesses lack backing off and his long passing and composure when in possession is very poor.

  8. No big loss if he does not sign. A decent player yes, but there are 10 a penny with his level of ability spread across Europe and probably the Championship…

Worth level terms with Saylor? Must be joking. Saylor is part of the fabric of the club. He bleeds black & white and is one of our leaders. His influence is immense if you watch his interaction with players during the game – and he s probably a better right back than Simmo too. No comparison!

  9. I think we can all agree that Simpson isn’t exactly world class. Having said that, he does give his all and is no slow coach and not scared to show his teeth when it’s required.
He gives 100% and is part of a well drilled unit that Colo marshalls with perfection at times.
Can we get better…Yes but at what cost, is the issue.
The fact that we have the best defensive record in the Prem tells me that if it’s not quite broke, then don’t spend fortunes fixing it.

By January, I think we will see who’s genuinely up to the mark in fight and full on spirit that’s required by Pardew and the fans.

I personally think Simpson is getting better as the season wears on and could turn out to be a really decent top quality player if persevered with, assuming his colours do get nailed ot the mast.

I know some won;t agree with me but it’s just the way I see it.

  10. Wolfie I dont disagree with that. He is definately improving, but he needs to realise that is due to playing with the likes of Colo and Saylor, who give him suitable guidance. Not to mention the role Pardew and his staff hasve had in his development.

If he gets greedy and thinks he done it all himself, he will find himself failing to meet the potential that this set up can help him reach…

Also, this club gave him a real shot when nobody else was intersted. If he does not love this club for that and thinks ‘the grass is greener on the other side’, then let him go. We dont want greedy players here, we have done that and it didnt work!

  11. We are going to continually have problems re-signing players because of our wages. This will only get worse as some of our better players’ contracts come up. I wouldn’t pay Simpson as much as Saylor by any means but how much are they really offering him? My guess is 15K per week. And what is the offer on the table for Colo? My guess is at least a 20K per week pay cut. Personally I don’t think Ashley is bargaining from a position of strength with Colo but he does have leverage with Simpson as several of our players could play right back. Simpson’s agent will probably talk him into holding out for too much and then he will probably have to leave. Not a huge loss like Colo but probably not great in the dressing room either. Mixed feelings on this one. Maybe the owner should be looking at Llambias to take a pay cut.

      (Quote)

  12. Shamrock, I agree with what you are saying.
If Simpson starts to rock the boat he can leave as far as I’m concerned as I don’t want any player deciding that they are better than they are and demanding a wage to suit their ego.

I hope Simpson’s words are took out of context but if not then Raylor or Santon are waiting.

I agree though that in a lesser team Simpson would look like a duck out of water.
In this team he is learning and getting better and I hope he realizes that and gets his head down and shows the fans that he is here because of them and the club and not because of his bank balance only.

  13. Have to add I thought Simpson was pretty good against Man City. He covered his man well and did some nice overlapping runs. His crosses aren’t too bad either. In today’s market I would think he is worth 20K a week (except at Man City where they would probably pay him 80K a week, just kidding he isn’t good enough to be ridiculously overpaid by them). I wonder what Marveaux is being paid? A good player but will he ever play more than a few games without getting injured? That seems to be his history. Groin problem after groin problem. I think Obertan will play the majority of games at right wing.

  14. sell him!!! i reckon we’ll get 40 mill easily from barcelona…. maybe they’d throw in messi as well…. but not a penny less!!!! 😈

  15. I like Danny and I think he is a decent player, I just hope he doesn’t really believe that he is worth the same as Saylor, they might be simular ages but Saylor has yrs of experience under his belt.
But I think Toonsy is right in that he has a high opinion of himself and whilst that isn’t a bad thing, if you are good enough. I do think that he is one of the easier players to replace

  16. Wolfie, we are singing from the same hymn sheet! Geordietwo – I’d agree with £20k. There has been a culture of clubs dishing out more on wages than they can actually afford. Players need to know that £40k a week for an average PL player is no longer sustainable or acceptable. £20k is plenty to keep him just about ticking over I should hope? 😯

I’m not a great footballer by any standards, but I’ll sign for £1000 a week and will put in the odd half decent tackle as well as bleed black & white. Surely that’s better value than Simmo on £40k?!

  17. Evening all, here’s a snippet of info, take it as you will, I’ve been working in Salford today at the Pie factory film studios. In the studio across from mine for the past two weeks they’ve been building this massive set (like a street in Afghanistan or something) for MUTV, at the same time a load of Man United players have been doing filming for some DHL commercial too. Anyway, cutting to the chase, no Rooney all week, he was supposed to be heavily involved, but no show. I’ve been around a couple of things before where he didn’t bother turning up, but this one seems fairly major. Could be excellent news for us, or he’s busting a gut to be ready for Sat. Either way I think it’s high time we got a result at Old Trafford.

      (Quote)

  18. Maybe Rooney went in a huff because the “pie factory” doesn’t do what it says on the tin 😉 😆

      (Quote)

  19. Simmo and Taylor have done well but if the club really wanted to go forward both of them need to be replaced, reckon we probably also need wingers who can chip in with a few goals, currently Guitierez and Obertan are spending to much time having to help the defenders out and therefore not attacking as much
This has the obvious effect of keepping our goals against low but on the negative side means we are almost totally reliant on Ba, Best to grab us a goal or two

Simmos prob worth 25k a week imo

      (Quote)

  20. Richie, it stopped making pies around 10 years ago, therefore any pies in there would be pretty old. We know he has a thing for old pie, therefore I reckon he must be crocked…

  21. I think there are some pretty harsh comments against Simpson to be fair,
Agreed with Wolfies comments that what he lacks in ability he makes up for in workrate and heart.
This isn’t a kid getting 40k a week and wanting double his money!! all he is saying is fairs fair
The lad is playing week in week out, for Newcastle and I don’t imagine he starter the rumour of him for England!
I’m sure playing week in, week out infront of 55k fans and being part of well discussed defence would naturally breed confidence and an eliment of Billy big bollocks – but he’s not one of these **** head footballers rolling out of nightclubs and fighting in the street.
I think he’s the kind of player you want in the squad and in fairness, he’ll be looking a Coloccini negotiating his contract, he’s already on 80k a week and he’s wanting to make sure he gets enough money to fund a bloody orphanage!!! – a worthy cause but if we are having a pop about Simpsons driver, that certainly takes it to another level.
I’m sure, with common sense from both parties a deal can be sorted but I don’t blame the kid wanting similar wages to the players he is lining up along side every week.

      (Quote)

  22. Its Colo we need to keep. If Simpson’s not happy with what he’s being offered, he knows where the airport is.

  23. The sooner football clubs stop going absolutely nuts over paying extortionate unsustainable wages to players the better .

The thing is, it’s a disease that seems to spread like wild fire because club after club are getting took over by Billionaire hobbyists who want the best at any cost, which then spirals to the average players becoming greedy buggers and wanting rises based on them being at the same club, only for them to get shipped out to another club who then pay them that wage demand all because they came from a billionaire hobbyist’s club.

In effect , this then seeps into the below average players minds and before you know it, there is no such thing as sensible wage demands. They all seem to be way over the top.

This cap on spending that’s gonna be introduced is open to a right good old spanking because the Man City’s are one step ahead with sponsor deals e.t.c. because no way could they survive on club revenue alone.

When a football clubs wage bill (Man City) is close to 100 million a year against television, fans, league position, sponsors and competitions, it does not add up and every company on the planet would cease to exist through it.

You can’t really blame the players in terms of them grasping what they can in a short career but the disease won’t stop until either football becomes secondary in this country to some other sport or some powers that be in the game stand up and say enough.

Football has got that bad that even us as fans think a million quid is like dropping a penny down the drain and panic if we only spend 5 million on a player.

    It’s madness isn’t it.

      (Quote)

  24. i think that we should not slag simmo down too much tbh and constantly right him off as no big deal, sell him, etc etc. at the end of the day no one man makes a team, that is to say that simmo is part of a four man defence, a defence that is the best in the premiership. Why do we sing colo praises and slate simmo….
having said that, he cant go on the same coin as ST, he needs to get a pay rise if its true he is on 10k a week. maybe double it or something. middle ground needs to be found.
as i said before though on a previous thread, i have much given up about who stays and who goes, what will be will be. sod it.
