Llambias responds with legal action against Barton’s podcast rant

Llambias goes on a rant of his own
Derek Llambias has taken time out of his hectic schedule of generally being sleazy to unleash another one of his telegraphs of doom. The shocking thing is that this time I actually agree with him.

This one is about Joey Barton’s rant last night on a QPR podcast, which came to light overnight and which you can read or listen to here.

In short Barton made a series of disparaging remarks against the Mike Ashley, Derek Llambias and, in a roundabout way, the normal working person who happens to work for Sports Direct as a job, labelling them “subordinates” which was odd considering they’ve nothing to do with Barton’s very public feud with Ashley and Llambias.

At first the club declined to comment on Barton’s remarks, which is probably a good thing given their habit of ballsing things up like this. However that has changed now and Derek Llambias has finally responded. Below, in full, is what Llambias has said, transcribed from Sky Sports News courtesy of the rewind button on my Sky + remote.

“In a week when one of Newcastle United’s most beloved footballers passed away it is disappointing that once again Joey Barton makes the headlines.”

“It is also unfortunate that Joey chose to draw such a disparaging comparison between himself and the employees of Sports Direct who through hard work and dedication are the recipients of one of the most generous bonus schemes in UK retailing.”

“It may not be a lot of money to Joey, but over 2,000 Sports Direct employees earning £20,000 will receive shares worth over 44,00 over the next two years.”

“However in this week, of all weeks, we really do not wish to engage in a public war of wards with Joey Barton. Our legal advisers are dealing with the matter now and we would encourage Joey to concentrate on his football at Queens Park Rangers.”

“Our thoughts and attentions this week remain firmly with the family and friends of Gary Speed.”

Now I’m not keen on Derek Llambias. I personally think a lot of the issues and ill feeling around the club stem from him, but that’s just my opinion. However, I have to say that this is a well reasoned and well thought out response from the club. Fair play to them on that score.

I can only assume it was written for Del by someone!

Naturally there will be people saying that Derek is using Gary Speed’s passing as a weapon against Barton, but I don’t see it that way. He is just responding to criticism and is allowed to do that isn’t he? I mean a lot of our fans have that commented on the earlier article (linked above, 2nd paragraph) said much the same thing about Barton attention seeking so perhaps Llambias isn’t far wide of the mark?

For once, I actually agree with Derek Llambias! I need to lay down…

  1. Mark – That’s twice now, and this is the third.

We’re due to get engaged on the 4th reply and married on the 5th 😉

Nah on a serious note it just grinds me when people say they are being ignored, again after I replied to them the last time which actually got ignored, without knowing the circumstances.Hopefully it clears things up a bit 🙂

It’s a good job Dan doesn’t text me. He can ask Marktoon what I’m like for replying to them 😆

Suicide is a mix of the most tragic, most selfish, most terrible (and I want to believe preventable) acts out there.
    27 Nov

    Suicide is a selfish act.
His wife, kids, friends have all been deprived because of his choice to end it all.
    It is the ultimate self-indulgence.

What Joey said was true and well phrased.

  3. @toonsy, the reply you sent to me about watching you and wolfie in the shower was enough for me 😯 I go all queasy when you reply now.. 😀

  4. Geoff – It depends how you view it. To me it seems rather like a blanket statement given that nobody knows what Speed was actually going through, not even his closest friends.

It’s fine saying that he was selfish for ending, like you just have done, but perhaps he feels like he is in a better place now and by dragging himself through each day it was selfish on behalf of other to expect him to go on.

Anyway, don’t really want to talk about the why and wheres of it. It’s tragic end of. Depression can be a horrible disease.

Toonsy, you used to give me smiley faces and nowadays it’s just all words. Are you seeing someone else? 😐

  7. Geoff….disagree, depression is a mental illness therefore rational thinking goes out of the window and you can’t process everything logically. i.e if a person genuinely thinks other people will be better of without them, then that can’t be defined as selfish.
We don’t know the circumstances that led to him taking that action, so no one is in a position to say he was “selfish” imo

  9. Geoff@79 I was agreeing with you earlier, but you can’t honeslty think it was OK for Barton to have said that, come on. Think it, yes, but have a bit of sensitivity. It’s like saying “so sad he was squashed into a bloody mess of guts an bone” about a car crash victim.

Up to now, nobody knows the true reason why Gary Speed chose to take his own life. When a person is in such a state where they consider suicide, rational thought simply does not enter the equation. To say suicide is a selfish act, really is beyond belief. It’s like saying people in wheelchairs are lazy.

…like I said, he should’ve commented with a little more tact.

  10. Whatever horrors or agonies drove him to take his life, they are nothing compared to the horrors and agonies of his poor wife finding him hanging, his kids with no father and his close friends with no answers.

They are going to be tortured by his decision to take his life all of their lives.

I’m probably in a minority of one but he’s less of a hero to me now than he was.
Of course I will show respect and applaud on Saturday, I liked him.

      (Quote)

  11. Geoff777…I agree that his wife & sons will suffer for the rest of their lives but what others are saying is that the person committing suicide aren’t always aware of the impact of their actions! Mental illness does strange things…

You clearly know nothing of the disease depression if you think he had control of his mental ability to decide his actions.
Depression is a terrible disease, for the simple fact that he persons actions effect not only themselves but others, but it certainly isn’t by choice.
With serious depression there is no rationale thinking. Your chemical imbalances do not allow for it.
Its like telling some with Alzheimer’s they’re an idiot for forgetting.

You say “With serious depression there is no rationale thinking. Your chemical imbalances do not allow for it.”

Can you hide such a serious depression?
Go on TV and be upbeat about the future.
Yet in reality be so down that within hours you take your own life?

Not sure, but as you say we’ll never know.
    So sad.

    Yes, very easily.

  19. Fair enough regarding the hours you work and having thousands of adoring admirers you must reply to each day. Must be difficult I admit. 😉

To be honest I think a lot of the time you write cracking articles and make a fair and educated point but honestly over the last year or so this blog has frequently turned in to a sewing circle with only a small group of supporters usually getting any kind of reply to their comments unless they’re in a small group of BigDave, Icedog etc.

Admittedly again all good lads and I enjoy the comments they leave. All good crack. But this is supposed to be the NUFCblog where all us proper supporters get a chance to have their say, regardless of how right/wrong/mental it might be.

From getting my rant out earlier I suppose I deserve the little digs you came back with but I still think I make a valid point. I honestly can’t remember you ever replying to a comment of mine but if I’m wrong I’m wrong, simple as that.

At least I’ve said my piece and that’s what a blog should be about surely?

Dan – Of course, and like I say it’s not just you that I can ignore, or appear to be ignoring. A lot of the time I’m just not about anymore and the limited time I do have I tend to be writing behind the scenes getting stuff ready for the next day. Busy busy 😆

You’re just lucky I had a day off today so you get a reply 😉 😆

Nah in all seriousness, like I said earlier, it’s not intended and sorry if it’s comes across that way at times, but what I will say is that if you leave a comment generally somebody will reply to it 🙂

Dan, it’s easy to get the wrong end of the stick mate. That much goes on on here that it’s easy to overlook comments.
I used to THINK Whumpie was a **** for ages (going back to when I used to post on Ed’s blog) because he never used to reply to me when I replied to his posts 😆

    …obviously now I KNOW, he’s a ****.

    ( 😉 only kidding Whumps)

…and Geoff, yes that’s one of the tragic things about depression, it’s most often hidden. A lot of people have the misconception that ‘depressed’ people wander around all day in tears, with their jaw dragging along the floor. The truth is, it’s often the people you’d least expect. The happy, smiling, joking, ‘life and soul of the party’ ones.

…anyway, PAOK just had their keeper sent off when they were 2 nowt up. Looks like a Spurs comeback. I’ve already won my bet before half time, might switch over to the manure game.

  30. So what is Barton getting his knickers in a knot for? If he reads carefully he’ll see that he was essentiality told to shut up about NUFC and was collared for the remarks about Sports Direct. Nothing else was mentioned by the club. Just by Joey. Theguy is a cockand is losing control again. I bet Warnock is dead chuffed that Barton seems focussed on QPR…

      (Quote)

  32. Toonsy – agree he’s a knob but wouldn’t it be interesting to hear what Barton really had to say about them? It wouldn’t surprise me if they had been doing things unethically but it could also be Barton being his usual knob like self.

      (Quote)

  33. The thing that really suprises me the most is that in 6 months/ 1 yrs time a lot of Ashley decisions seem to pay off. I mean, people were up in arms when Carroll was sold but if you look now we have Demba Ba who looks like a proper international and Andy Carroll is a flop who can’t live up to his name or price tag. He has scored like 2 goals for tham and Ba 9. He is an alcoholic, we got £35Million. The club got rid of Barton and although we didn’t get a fee, can hardly say we have missed him. Cabaye and Obertoon are better respectively at CM/ RW. The guy is a liability, he was particularly unwelcoming to Cabaye apparently once he was realised Cabaye was taking over set pieces. Get rid, total ******** IMO and whats he going on about SportsDirect employees for? Next time your out pissed in Liverpool, isn’t it time you started on a grown man Joey and not a 15 yr old kid? 😉

      (Quote)

  34. Stuart – Yeah I guess it would be interesting and it wouldn’t surprise me if they’ve all been ***** in what is essentially turning into one big pissing contest at the expense of the NUFC name, again.

I just kind of think what the point of it all is? Its over, he should move on and be the bigger man that he claims he is. I wonder what the QPR fans, players and management think of him and his fixation? Quite sad really 😕

      (Quote)

  35. To be honest is Barton’s rant any worse than Llambias’s drunken ramble? Neither one knows how to keep his gob shut. It’s too bad we can’t sell (or give away) Llambias to some unsuspecting bunch of mugs. Would Pardew miss him? Not for a second I suspect.

      (Quote)

  36. I bet he’s gutted at the position NUFC are in. Can just sense he would be rubbing it in every other week on twitter if QPR were mid-table and we were bottom 3. Telling the world that he and Nolan were indispensable 👿 Isn’t it refreshing that he’s reduced to pathetic pot-shots at Ashley and Lambias.

  38. Barton has been a disgrace with his outspoken views of suicide.
No matter what people’s views are on the subject, Barton being in the position he is, should have kept his thoughts to himself at such a traumatic time for Speeds family.

But, Lambias, should have also remained silent and not brought the subject up again as his motive was also selfish.

    No winners. Only losers! 😯

  40. I notice Steve Bruce has been sacked. I say well done, Sreve, you did a great job and you’ll always be welcome to come and watch your beloved NUFC anytime! 🙂

      (Quote)

  41. Geoff. If a man who appears to have it all (I dont mean riches, just a loving family, nice home, good friends, good job etc) KILLS themselves, is that the action of a sound mind? If a person does that to themsleves, knowing there is no coming back – do you really think that is selfish? It is obviously a manifestation of a very intense and very overpowering urge to carry out and see through such an act. So intense, it no doubt destroys the ability to consider the wider implications (such as loved ones left behind). It is a complete mental breakdown – there can be no other explanation for it – that is what it takes in order to do something like that (if there is nothing hanging over you like a serious court case or some life changing act for the worse that is beyond your control)…

If a person suffers from such an episode, they cant be called selfish. Selfish is essentially self preservation. There is no preservation in death in these circumstances and nothing sane about committing such an act when the person appears to have it all.

I dont know you, but you seem to be using a blanket, judgemental statement to cover a range of very complicated and difficult conditions of the mind.

When you have seen it first hand time and again (as well as the fallout and impact on loved ones from it) you tend to realise that it could happen to anybody and we should all keep our fingers crossed that something does not suddenly snap in our own minds (or the minds of those we love) one day….

      (Quote)

  42. Geordie Dan, if you post once in a blue moon you are less likley to get noticed. If you post more often, and post something worth discussing it will no doubt get noticed and replied to. As it stands though (and dont take this the wrong way) but you sound like some desparate stalker that just wants to be loved.

Take it easy and play nice? Peace 😉
