Which one would you be prepared to lose for the greater good: Tiote or Krul?

Will we be cashing a Cheik in January?
Firstly, let me say bonjour! I am Simon, or Raffo and have contributed on here since the breakaway movement last year so I like to think of myself as a fellow rebel!

I grew up in Durham and have lived as an expat in Yorkshire since 2001 when I left home for Uni. I now find myself down in Barnsley with a ‘reet pit yacker’ for a wife, and there’s plenty of stick to be had with the in-laws with all things Toon related. When we were relegated I came home to find a box of tissues left for me on my doorstep by a neighbour. B*stards! Suffice to say I put them to good use! My brother also plays for the monkey hangers so I like to think I have a little bit of knowledge, or at least an opinion!

Now then, I appreciate that it is not a subject that any of us really like if we are honest, losing a star player, but I had a thought this morning making the hour long trek to my oh so interesting job. If we HAD to sell someone, who could we lose and whose absence would have the least negative effect?

What I thought I would do is look at the two players who have been mentioned recently and also curiously seem to have the same potential value of £20 million. There seems to be a feeling that we may well have to sell to buy and I for one wouldn’t mind sacrificing one player to get four or five others in. Speculate to accumulate and all that.

Many will no doubt mention the £35million we should have, but I don’t think there’s very much of that around to be spent. Debts, wages, agent’s fees, transfer fees etc have taken a chunk of that which is fine in my book. As long as any money we bring in from sales is used solely for incomings, a big big IF I know, then lets try.

Tim Krul:

I am sure we would all agree that he has been a revelation this season since taking the No1 shirt from Steve Harper. I was actually someone that had advocated replacing Harp’s, but people may remember that I thought Fraser Forster should have the first crack. I will put up my hands and admit I was wrong. He has been nothing short of fantastic. It is rumoured that Chelsea and Tottenham, along with others no doubt, are hovering and want him in Jan. Well what would this mean?

Steve Harper could come back into the fray and resume his role as No1, but this is a very short sighted view in my opinion. I think we have made the change for a younger keeper and we shouldn’t go back. Cynics may view Rob Eliot coming in as a surprise third choice as potentially paving the way for Timmy to move on. Perhaps Fraser was sent to Celtic to gain first team experience with a view to always coming back to take over from Tim and play as our No1 from Jan?

Cheick Cheick Cheick BOOOOM Tiote:

The midfield powerhouse has been injured recently. Many eyebrows have started to be raised about the length of the injury time he has had, given that the initial prognosis was for a short layoff. There are rumours abound from local hacks that he is a shoe in to be away in Jan, Chelski the likely destination, but who could fill in?

Danny Guthrie has done a decent job in there in Tiote’s absence, but we also have Dan Gosling, Mehdi Abeid and Alan Smith to fall back on if needs be. He does collect an amazing number of cards a season and will be away for the CAN in the New Year too.

My thoughts: Well I think we will lose one of them and I pray it is only one. I think we would be ‘better off’ losing Cheik Tiote. We can cover his loss better in my opinion with Guthrie, but also a slight change in formation can see us play Hatem Ben Arfa behind Leon Best and Demba Ba.

A great keeper is worth 10 points a season at least. Krul has seen his value rocket this last six months and he is vital to us achieving our ambitions this term. There was a reason Harper was replaced as number 1 and I think we would be foolish to go back to him, or the shaky Elliot. Forster is playing in a two team league so would also be a big risk. I say we sell Forster and Tiote and we can go and buy three or four good players, scouted by Mr Carr Esq, to make us a stronger team and really cement our push for the top seven.

I would like to see us buy Pieters to cover left-back and centre-back, an orthodox centre-back who will cover us for the rest of the season but will challenge Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini when they are fit, a central midfielder, another winger and a striker (rumoured to be Maiga).

I think we were always going to see a left-back and a striker in January, so effectively the sale of Tiote could see us bring in a new spine to the team, a centre-back, a central midfielder and the winger. Maybe other sales of players such as Forster, Lovenkrands, Smith and possibly Ranger could see us able to buy another striker plus whatever Ashley decides to give us as a present.

I don’t WANT to see him leave but I think the benefits to the team and what Pardew can do with the money make it the only sensible thing to do. But what do you guys think?

  1. no question.. I’d defo lose Tiote for Krul. Excellent keepers are like gold dust.

Tiote, for all he’s great could be replaced and play could be tinkered with to accommodate another midfielder.

Krul is irreplaceable in my eyes unless we spend what we’d receive for krul which we won’t.

      (Quote)

  2. Neither (obviosuly), but Tiote if faced with a choice- he would bring in a bloody fortune. Plus it is easier to replace a quality DM then it is a player who, IMO, could easily become one of the top keepers in the world

      (Quote)

  3. If one has to go I would choose Tiote. Krul is outstanding and our only real proven young keeper. What would be the point in selling Krul even for big money? It would be a disaster for the season and we could end up in the bottom 5 especially the way the injuries are going. Tiote has also been huge for us but at least we have viable alternatives at that position. Are we trying to build a winning team with Ashley or just improve the financial bottom line to the point where he can sell for a profit? I’m still not sure what the real answer is to that one.

      (Quote)

  4. As above neither ,
The carroll money was not spent on wages etc thats just tosh and if we sold either tiote or krul none of that money would go into buying players either .

      (Quote)

  5. Jan will show us. I think we are trying to build but it’s a hypothetical question as to who could we sacrifice to help push that development forward.

  6. If NUFC is following the Lyon model, then neither is ready for sale. That is unless, there are comparable values to those two on less money.

What NUFC have to do is keep the “fire in the guts” for high place in the standings types like Cabaye seeing constant improvement. If he, or several others lose enthusiasm, the transfer requests will be coming in & AP will be in re-build mode – if he stays.

i’m sorry like but stuff like this is becoming boring now. What next, Carroll was sold to line Ashley’s pockets? He’s ruining us cause he hates us? He’s taking money out the club left right and centre? Yawn.

Wasn’t it just revealed how much we spent on agents fees alone last year? Something like £6million?

There really isn’t a story here is there, the Carroll money has gone back in to the club’s finances. When a player become available for the right deal, we’ll buy, al la Ben Arfa, and more than likely, Maiga.

    Sustainable

  8. Beeguy I think we are following the Newcastle model. Keep your eyes open for a bargain but sell for big dosh whenever possible. We have cover for Tiote and Ashley knows it. If the money gets big enough he is gone, no matter what it does to our chances of finishing in the top 7. The side will still be entertaining without Tiote and the bank balance looks so much better. All comments about breaking even this year by Llambias do not taken into account transfer activity. If transfer activity is added on we have the biggest net income from player sales of any Prem club (ie. we have spent less and brought in more money than any other club). This is continuing to happen and has done since 2008. Ashley will end up making a fortune from Newcastle within the next 4 or 5 years.Yes we owe him 130 million in free loans but he is brilliant as a businessman. He knows he will make a huge profit by sticking to his plan. We may or may not get European football out of it but he will definitely make huge amounts of money.

      (Quote)

  9. I don’t mind losing both. Firstly,I have strong believe in NUFC nuturing Good Gk’s of their own.

Secondly,if tiote is to be sold,it will be on a hefty price tag which is good. Part of the money will be used to find another such talent.

Krul sold, tiote to stay if no replacement.

      (Quote)

  10. Sell em both, then colo and cabYe. The sooner we get rid of our best players the more peaceful our windows will be. I have no doubt we will loose one or more this window. I hope it’s tiote but it could be more than just him I expect. I don’t expect simmo to stay or colo the way it looks tbh.

      (Quote)

  11. Tiote or Krul, hmmm.

    Look at it this way…

Imagine Tiote is a kidney and Krul is a heart….Now then , you can replace both but getting the right organs to match isn’t so easy because they can be rejected.

The thing is, it’s easier to survive if you lose one kidney because you have a back up that will do the job just as effective.

Lose your heart and the chances of a match are a bit more difficult and even then if you do get one, there is a major chance of it not working correctly .

Basically it’s far easier to replace a quality midfielder even in the ranks than it is to replace the quality that is Tim Krul who I rate as good as any keeper in the Prem and he will be the best keeper on the planet in time to come in my opinion.

I know I know, I always have to go about stuff in a wacky way don’t I 😆

      (Quote)

  12. ILM hows it going for ye mate 😕

For me Tiote is easier to replace than Krul would, but I think it’s sad that we now have to worry about who we lose in the windows rather than get excited about who we will bring in 👿

      (Quote)

  13. Krul must never be sold!

IF Ashley has already agreed deals to bring in Yanga- Mbiwa , Pieters, Barnetta and one of Vossen/ Giroud/ Maiga , and needs to sell to fund them, I would sacrifice Tiote and tie Guthrie down on a long contract.
If he wants to sell a keeper he can sell Forster to Celtic.

      (Quote)

  14. Sell the players who have played well for decent money, balance the books and hopefully get shot of the parasite that owns the club. I mentioned a while ago we will always be a transfer window away from being dismantled as a team.
Sorry for the negativity but until February that’s how I feel. This bloke would sell his mother for a profit.

      (Quote)

  16. Sale of Krul would be a very bad sign indeed. I don’t think Ashley would sanction it because right now and for a long while to come Krul is irreplaceable. I think Ashley will only tinker with the side in January. Maybe Maiga and a cheap centre back if one is available. We have built up a nice pile of points (26) so even if our play in the next couple of months is only average due to injuries and African Cup of Nations we should come out of January with 38 to 44 points with 16 games still to play! This will be Ashley’s thinking. And if huge money is offered for Tiote what do people honestly think Ashley will do? Six million for agent fees is peanuts in today’s game and Ashley knows it.

  24. Boring! Whingeing so called supporters who can’t see a bigger picture emerging. 18 months ago we were in the championship. Here we are now 6th in the Prem with a good, easy on the eye, football team, having replaced 4 wantaway players who decided they were so important to NUFC that we would crumble after their departure. Their replacements have brought a classy, pacy rhythm to the style of the team. THe last 3 performances have been good but resulted in only one point – against the 3 best teams in England and THAT has brought out the negs in force. Ashley – public enemy No 1 – is getting it full time, but for what? Putiing the club back in the news for the right reasons, playing good football in the upper echelons of the Prem. Selling our best players? When and who? Carroll? Nolan – a good skipper but fading fast on the pitch. Barton – no comment required. Enrique – fine player who wanted to go to a bigger club (?) It happens and the only sale regret in my book. I don’t foresee any sale to raise the eyebrows – but I may be wrong and if I am then I trust Pardew to get it right in the end.

      (Quote)

  25. Keith yes I have noticed we are the only team to mention agents fees when we buy players. It is a pathetic moan about nothing. Of course there are agents fees. Does Ashley do business for no charge? Does Llambias do his managing director job (supposedly) for no charge? One thing that really frustrates Ashley/Llambias is that no huge corporation has bought the naming rights at the ground for a huge fee. That must be a real kick in the pants for Ashley.

not whinging m8, its an opinion.

Pardew wont get it right if Mike sells the best keeper in the perm at the mo..imo.

The rest had good reason to go / be sold. Theres no reason to sell Krul esp if we receive a big fee for Tiote.

I’d be gutted if we sold Krul and would never trust Ashley again..

      (Quote)

  27. Some good points there Tony Toon. We are in much better shape than several years ago. I think Jose’s leaving was a real shame as well. Are Liverpool really that much better than us or did it come down to salary as with Carroll? It’s all about the money of course. Would love to finish above them in the league. Sadly I think lack of depth will kill our chances for top 7 in the second half of the season. Injuries and ACoN will force us down the table to 8th or 9th.

      (Quote)

  28. Tony the Ashley has done so much for the club sh1te is so fuking boring if you want to lick his *** thats up to you, if you think that selling the name of the ground is no biggie and something you don’t regret, thats up to you too. So please have the decency not to question others support just because their opinion is different from yours

      (Quote)

  29. GeordieTwo I tend to believe the reasons Jose gave for leaving, the main one was the broken promises and that he couldn’t trust the club ( Jabba and Co) as for Euro footie etc I still believe he has far more chance of that happening at Liverpool than here, because they keep adding to there team, we will continue selling our better players.

      (Quote)

  30. Would have to be Tiote, although would also loathe to sell him as he is incredible at what he does, one of the best in the prem in fact. I’d be surprised if he went to Chelski as he wouldn’t be guaranteed 1st team when Essien comes back and Essien would be in ahead of anyone. Would like us to go for Pieters although I have heard from the horses mouth that Bassong wants to come back. The resentment would quickly die down if he did…

  31. There’s a good chance you are right about Jose Big Dave. I thought he really seemed to lose interest in the club early this year and especially in the summer when we were on tour. I can only imagine Llambias played a big part in this. He strikes me as someone who lacks negotiating skills. That is one of the main reasons why so many deals broke down in the last window. Strikes me as a definite sneaky weasel who would do anything to ingratiate himself with Ashley. Obviously it has worked as he still has his job despite his complete lack of football knowledge or previous experience in football management.

But the last 20 games have been really good tony i agree .
You focus on the positives and i concentrate on the negatives ashley brings to the club . So just to get it clear do you think we will spend more than we sell in this window ?

anyway, who’s to say Pards has signed up to selling all our better players, he has pride in his squad too. His reputaion is at risk if we continue to underperform with a jigsaw squad every season.

Whether Tiote is in that bracket remains to be seen but if he is, then bye bye because If a player wants to leave…(and I’m not saying Tiote does).. But even if that player was Messi himself, I would say **** off because I don;t want any player playing for this club who’s heart isn’t in it or who harbours thoughts of taking off at the first opportunity.

I think your getting the wrong end of what he said mate (in my opinion), this is what he said on the naming rights: “I would hope to generate between £8m-10m a year, that will give us another player,”

He’s just pointing out the amount generated by the naming rights income would be an amount large enough to buy a player. And as we know, new signings appease fans.

I just can’t help but wonder why because some awful newspaper has said that a big club or two are readying themselves to bid for our players that we are going to sell them. I just don’t see any reason why it necessarily follows. I think the hatred for Ashley allows the belief of a southern newshound over the players who have said time after time they don’y wish to leave. The players who have gone did. Not really Ashley’s fault imo despite what you might think. That said I don’t like him and many of the things he has done but results speak for themselves. In a hurry now – must go

But it takes time to build a team capabale of challenging for these things and not all players will be willing to give us time. Players will come and go but I firmly belive the club have replacments in mind for everyone and I would argue they will be of similar quality or better than the ones that left.

Tiote left for a huge club only last season when he left FC Twente, he signed a new contract off the back of the 35mill off Carrolls sale (which is what Llambias sold/told us) so apparently he’s happy, and we signed him up for 5yrs and don’t need to sell him.

  46. Keith #42 just on your last question to Tony… does it matter if the squad is stronger after?

As far as the article goes.. Really can`t see Tim Krul being sold in the near future anyway, and don`t want to see Tiote go as much as the next man but whether it be January, the summer coming or the next one, he will almost certainly be sold.

Sometimes you have to sacrifice for the greater good. Ask Arsenal fans how they reacted when Anelka, Petit and Overmars were sold. Ask them how they felt a few seasons later when they won the league unbeaten after replacing those players with what were seen at the time as cheap knock-off replacements or no-namers.

You either have faith in the system / project or you don`t.

We are a club in transition mate, call it waking up the sleeping giant…call it re-inventing ourselves…but what we cannot do at this present time is compete with the bigger clubs “YET” and the reasons are what we all know.
We are also situated in the North East and not London or Manchester or Liverpool which means we cannot turn heads like those clubs can do.

We are in the process of becoming a bigger club with a bigger club mentality but doing it “our” way, which means financing from the inside , from what the club makes and not on the never never…

It’s ok having a detached house with a Ferrari in the garage on mortgage and finance…it might impress the neighbours but if it takes up most of your earnings to look good, you are in trouble if something should go wrong or repairs are needed….that’s when you lose your Ferrari and your house.

Sometimes it’s better to sell your Ferrari for a nice looking cheaper model that can perform similar outright, that way you don’t end up paying for it with interest and you can save some money in the event of repairs.

Newcastle U are in a modest detached house with a family car at the minute but owe nobody anything except to who’s in that house and in time, with good housekeeping, they can get a nicer car and extend the house , then the neighbours will take notice then. 😀

I really dont know. I wouldnt like to try and second guess the fella as he is unpredictable to put in mildly. As Dave point at in post 55 his main reason in buying us ( accoring the sir john hall ) was to use us to market sports direct , so by that logic it is in his main interest to see us be as succesful as we can as he will get more exposer for sd if we were to get into europa league or champions league. But maybe top 10 in the league is enough for sd.

Slim to none, can’t seeing anyone touching us if i’m honest. I reckon we’re in serious **** getting a shirt sponsor, never mind the stadium!

I agree m8, I said I’d be happy to sell Tiote but hope its stops meaning krul can stay.

Theres a fine line between selling our best players for the good of the team/ making profit for profit sake/ making the team we have the bigger team. not sure which one of those mike is after, thats all 😀

  54. johnnotoon@57 , are well just keep selling then 😯

  55. Mark #61 Sadly because of teams with bottomless pits of cash it would be next to impossible to replicate what Arsenal did back then and I think it will be at least four to five years before we are realistically competing for Champions League spots but I do think it is the right way to do things and we are progressing.

You may well be right as regards him clawing back cash, nobody knows mate. It`s a pity the books come out two years after it happens with clubs because we would be able to see how the debt looks and make a more accurate call on that one.

  56. the thing is, none of us know what will happen, someone here will say..”I told you so” but really we’re all playing the waiting game hoping for the right outcome..

  57. Keith@#67 Ah I have no doubt you don`t have faith in him mate, and perfectly entitled to have that standpoint, was just wondering.

Just to get where you stand because I miss half of the debates between you and Wolfie, do you think we have a worse squad now than just before we sold Carroll?

  58. Well Mark, I don’t think it needs to be an ‘I told you so’ off anyone, I would hope it all works out for the good of the club and all of us as fans.

I’m a total optimist but I can see the bigger picture in what Ashley’s doing..
I understand many disagree and that’s fine but my opinion is of seeing better times ahead rather than the bad.

  59. @wolfie, I didnt mean it in a spoilt brat kind of bragging way, just someone will probably be right.

To tell the truth m8 I’m very similar to you and think he is doing the right thing, which I’ve said at times he needs praising for what he’s achieved but sometimes I feel hes a slimey cockend that doesnt give a fu**..

I tend to bounce off ppl with hope 😀

  60. I am too wolfie, I think the sale of some players for big profits will reap rewards and until/when we are sold to a rich rich get the. We are stuck with this way of funding the club.

What we could do with colo is take him off at half time if he looks a bit shakey and put kadar in. If Norwich isn’t the team to play our lesser players in which is?
