Game on! Norwich v Newcastle – Simpson and Perch start at the heart of defence

Magpies take on Canaries
Welcome one and all to our ‘Game on’ article which will take us through every twist and turn of the game this afternoon as the Magpies fly to Carrow Road to do battle with the Canaries.

Of course this will be a rather depleted Newcastle side that is tasked with facing the Premier League new boys of Norwich City. As Shamrock points out in his match preview, things are looking less that ideal when you consider our injury list.

However let’s not get too down about it. We can still get a result at Carrow Road although admittedly it would be easier with a fully fit squad to choose from. It’s not to be though and I guess we just have to make the best of what we’ve got and hope those that come into the fold can do the job for us.

As far as stats go you can peruse a wide range of them in the previously linked match preview, or you can have a look at more stats and fact aswell as some chalkboards and other fancy stuff here. I suggest you give both a look if you haven’t already done so as they both contain some really interesting thoughts and analysis of the game today.

If you’re looking for a link, the good news is that there are quite a few overseas TV stations broadcasting the match so the chances of picking up a decent one are fair to moderate. Of course you never quite know until the time and it makes it easier if we all pull together and share any decent links we come across on our cyber travels.

That just about wrap this up and it’s over to Carrow Road where Newcastle will be looking to bounce back from a run of three games without a win against a tricky customer in Paul Lambert’s Norwich City.

Howay the lads!

Norwich: Ruddy; Martin, Morison, Whitbread, Crofts, Holt (C), Surman, Hoolahan, Fox, Tierney, Naughton

Subs: Rudd, Johnson, Jackson, Pilkington, Bennett, Barnett, Wilbraham

Newcastle: Tim Krul; Ryan Taylor, Danny Simpson, James Perch, Davide Santon; Gabriel Obertan, Yohan Cabaye, Dan Gosling, Jonas Gutierrez (c); Demba Ba, Shola Ameobi

Subs: Rob Elliot, Shane Ferguson, Alan Smith, Sammy Ameobi, Hatem Ben Arfa, Peter Lovenkrands, Leon Best

  1. I wonder if its possible that Benny has been struggling this week, and maybe even Kadar has been struggling too.
I just can’t understand why a manager wouldn’t pick his best team, unless he noticed that the fans were starting to take to him and decided that he didn’t like it 😯

You will encounter these tactics with Big Dave mate, he’s been doing it for years or at least as long as I’ve been coming on these blogs. Then he mentions ‘wanky tissue’, wtf’s he got to do with debate on here? πŸ˜‰

  3. theres got to be sumit up with benny , the lad should have been on after 60 mins , never mind , next game is at home with 52,000 supporters , hwtl

  5. Obertan and Gosling had shockers today, Shola was….shola, terrible in periods, great in others, Santon looked ok although if you’re in a back four of Perch, Simpson and Raylor (2 of whom were out of position) you should look decent
Def need players back for Swansea or we can kiss goodbye to top 7 finish

  6. Ba and Cabaye played well as did Santon for his first start, well done. Also Fergie getting a run out is a plus.

Don’t forget we played nearly a full half with only 10men. Gosling had a bad day today but it happens when youre a bit rusty.

Roll on the next two home games

Toon Toon, I hate m.o.t.d when we get beat. πŸ™

  8. DJG what tactics is this ??? as for what has wanky got to do with it I simply stated that debating with you is like debating with wanky, he never answers a straight question but like you answers a question with a question.

  9. SOLANO: I’m on it, writing a positive article at the moment!

Gosling had a good game up until his over eagerness came about, he tried to win the ball for us and it back fired. If it was any other player would people slag him off? He looked very neat and tidy on the ball, showing good visual awareness to pass the ball and advanced from midfield to join in the attacks.

I could go on about the positives in this game, it was always going to be a tough test. We did very well considering that we didn’t have our first choice centre-backs.

Why are people saying Ben Arfa should’ve come on? He has shown in his last few games that he isn’t the player he used to be and still looks rusty on the ball. It will take time before he gets back to his best and we as fans need to be patient with that.

  10. ba’s 2 goals today were fantastic!!! 11 goals now for the lad !!

this was gna happen at some point of the season with our injurys and luck against us but we still have done brilliant overall and have 26 points!! very hard game today!! never mind eh

      (Quote)

  11. @Army69: I agree we should have changed things after our second goal. Today we should have won. We showed we could be dangerous up front and scored 2 goals.

Look we should be concerned because if we can be beaten comprehensively by Norwich and do not fool yourselves 4 – 2 is a humbling defeat then we are only in 7th place due to a good start and the reality is we are on the level of QPR and Norwich.

You may Argue Colo is out Taylor and Tiote is out but that is part of the game. The league does not grant you 1/2 point for mitigating circumstances. Mind you these are our bread and butter games not the Chelseas, Citys and uniteds e.t.c. If we start to loosen up in our bread and butter games then we are in trouble. We need to get a points cushin in advance because come January, Ba, Tiote are going to the African nations cup.

  12. If ppl think Perch was **** then its fine to say it, you are not blind. Its a forum for your own opinion, doesnt mean its right or others will agree. Why argue over other ppls opinion, just ignore if you don’t agree..very silly.

  13. Army it was a sarcastic comment aimed at some of the comments about Pards getting his subs wrong today considering that he see’s them all week every week.
As I have said several times why would he not play the best players ??

      (Quote)

  14. I thought 9 of the starting 11 can hold their heads up high for effort at least . Shola and Obertan were imo very poor . Neither showed any application in the first half .

      (Quote)

  15. Benny is rusty doesn’t look good etc to all those people saying that, how is he going to get un rusty? Spray himself with WD40 or does he need to play games???????

We’ve started so well so if someone even questions pardew the normal ‘never go to match brigade’ are on your back. No-one is saying pards is useless and he should be out it’s just a blog for discussion ffs

  16. ooooo bet ya sum wish we had clueless chris back so we could lose against hull blackpool and the other has beens @ home

  17. Well, I was worried that Shola would get a red but fair play to him..Shame Gosling had to go in for a tackle like that whilst carrying a yellow but it was never a straight red.
I’m heartened by the never say die attitude and to be fair, we got done in the air plus another scrambled goal against.

Ba was fantastic and never gave up. Shola played well and Cabaye played really well except for the loose pass but I can forgive him for that.

Perch and Simpson probably done as much as they could bearing in mind the aerial threat they were up against so I wont be too hard on them.

Santon looks like he will be a major asset..

Over-all I think we gave it our best shot and were unlucky really as we could have easily came away with a point from that game.

To some it might look bad, as if the wheels have fell off but I don’t see it that way.

4-2 when we had 10 men which could easily have ended 4-4 , stranger things have happened.

    Roll on next week. πŸ˜€

  18. 6 points from our next 4 games will have us 32 points , thats half way through a season !! when we got relegated it was 34 points!! we are doing mint man , its just we have a paper thin squad at the mo!! lets get some players in january and try and get as high up the table as we can!! top 10 for me this season would be class!!!

  19. Well to me it’s apparent that Kadar has ‘burnt his bridges’ with Pardew and the sooner Williamson and Collo are back the better as far as I’m concerned. Not looking forward to Swansea at home now. πŸ˜•

  20. Aye bring back chris 2-1 against donny… πŸ˜‰

Anyone who mentions sacking the manager is daft but its unfair to question why perch is hacking one of their players in the corner when we were well in the match and killed off any fightback that was brewing what is in his brain apart from cobwebs and playing a prick.

      (Quote)

  21. Santon good debut for me he has to stay in LB but is he injured? Raylor looked better at RB than he did at LB. Smith better not play the next match in centre mid

  22. Maybe benny has been on the hard stuff with his comment aboot going for the leauge thats why he didnt get on πŸ˜†

Go through and read it. I say again, tactics. πŸ˜‰

  25. Can’t believe all the negativity. We have our 3 centre backs missing as well as Tiote, Guthrie an Marveaux and yet still showed some great team spirit and touches of class. Losing 3 centre-backs all at the same time is very unusual though (and yes we should have had one in during the summer). In the end were undone by 4 headers because we had no decent centre backs – outside of that they created nowt.

Perch was as expected – shocking (what was he thinking when he gave that free kick away – the bloke was going nowhere?). Simpson did OK but was playing out of position and lacks height. No doubt we need to bring a centre back in in January.

Positives Cabaye, Ba, Santon, Strolla all had decent games, team spirit was evident again, we are still 7th on the same points as Liverpool in 6th and only 3 points of Arsenal in 4th. 7 points ahead of Villa in 8th place.

Hopefully Colo, Williamson and Tiote back next week or very soon and we can get some decent points from the next 3 games. Keep the faith πŸ™‚

  26. Square pegs round holes. kadar should have played and simm full back. it ain’t rocket science. benny should have started in front of obertan who was rank

      (Quote)

  27. Depressing result but not surprised really. All their goals were ****e but exactly as i’d expected them. Really annoyed we’ve stuck with Obertan so much he had some good moments but the majority of his running he stopped inside the penalty area and never looked sure whether to shoot or cross. Gosling wasn’t great, silly red-mind shouldn’t that have meant their player also got a straight red for doing in Shola?

Didn’t mind sammy coming on instead of arfa, just should have happened earlier for me. And have replaced Gosling at half time and played him advanced and cabaye pushed back….meh. Week of depression ahead then

      (Quote)

  28. The thing that I can’t take though is that Norwich were crap and with Steven Taylor and Collo we would have eliminated all but possibly one of their goals and even then it wasn’t a corner. Fatty get yer wallet out in Jan. If I was Tamas Kadar I would be watching that and handing in a transfer request.

      (Quote)

  29. One other thing no matter who you are you defend high up the field today we were backing on top of krul. It doesn’t matter what personnel was playing it is a basic. agree with djg if kadar can’t get a start today tell pardew to forget it and leave next month

      (Quote)

  30. DJG-Exactly, absolutely no sense for playing Simmo at CB ahead of him imo. We’d best not line up like this next week, even if Swansea are ****e away from home Graham would bully them just as well as Holt.

      (Quote)

  31. NEWKIE

Exactly mate, Im not a ‘told you so’ person or at least try not to be. But this was no visible a blind man in a cave could have seen it coming, no offense to the blind. πŸ˜•

      (Quote)

  32. DJG-The only reason I can think is that he wanted to keep the similar defence playing together without having to change so many personel, or perhaps fatty wanted a display to disprove Simmo couldn’t cover both centre and right back and therefore prove we don’t need a centre back in Jan?

Whichever reason it quite clearly won’t work. By the same rational we may as well play Ameobi at centre back because he’s in our team and can head a ball πŸ˜•

And Norwich were absolutely ****e. That’s what does my head in.

      (Quote)

  33. DJG @ 378 ?? what tactics is this ? just incase you didn’t notice that I allready asked that question ❓

On the plus side Ba again, and a very good debut for Santon

      (Quote)

  34. Everybody saw this coming playing two physically inadequate specimans against two bruisers their was only going to be one outcome. So why did`nt Pardew give us a fighting chance by selecting Kadar. People are making assumptions about training etc ******* Pardew has his favourites, straight after last weeks game he said Perch will definately play next week. What has perch ever done to warrant wearing a black and white shirt. Sorry Pardew you are well paid for making decisions and you got it wrong this time.

      (Quote)

  35. Just hope Willo will be back soon. Oh, and a great debut for Santon I thought, should mould really well when we get Colo back in the team.

      (Quote)

  36. TC- Why do people keep turning up and sayin more or less the same thing as me then? 😳

Big Dave, The tactics you always use of making up things that people havn’t even said and trying to pass it off as a comeback. 😳

I’m off out anyway, can’t be arsed with these 2 that have traditionally had a problem with me on here and some things never change. πŸ˜‰

      (Quote)

  37. DJG your full of ****ing ****.
I can honestly say I have never had a problem with you before.
But I do think now that you are a bit of a walter mitty, that goes crying that people are picking on ye.

      (Quote)

  38. 3hw@418 I agree having 3 injuries in the same position is unlucky , but would willo have done any better we have a good first 11 and a small weak squad in my opinion as I have whined on about for months . Here’s 1 for the stat lovers in ashleys reign how many defenders have we sold or released and how many signed ?

      (Quote)

  39. Keith spot on mate our 1st 11 is strong enough for any team but the squad as a whole isn’t strong enough.
But to add to that we have just went through a shocking amount of quality players to injuries.

      (Quote)

  40. @ DJG you haven’t read the script mate you’ve got to lick all the players arses ha

Don’t forget lads that the first goal shouldn’t have been a corner!
But the concentration wasn’t there for it and the marking like all goals was terrible which pisses you off.

If simpson and perch can’t defend in the premier league (up against two be honest crap non league strikers) what are they in the squad for?

I know these players aren’t centre halfs but they’re ALLEGEDLY defenders and all they had to do was mark their players, at least make it difficult for them but all the norwich scorers had easy runs at the ball, Timmy reacted as best he could was just let down by those infront of him.

Gosling had a decent game up to giving the ball away for their goal, he got in some good positions and then it was not so good for him after their goal. Santon looked good for his first start hopefully the first of many, him and Jonas could be a good combination when he gets up to speed. Cabaye looking better every game even though he’s been a bit over worked lately he’s been a mint signing. Obertan was poor needs to get his head up more or do something with it if he keeps it.
At 3-2 with ten men we were right on top, they looked like they only had ten then perch strikes again, Colo and Willo next week hopefully

      (Quote)

  41. @ Icedog we played well except for the marking by perch and simpson on all the goals if that makes sense, imagine if we had one or two of the first choice centre halves I think we would have won comfortably

      (Quote)

  42. @ Big dave Of course I’m bull****ting, but you do get grief on here if you criticise players by people trying to imply you should support the team instead

      (Quote)

  43. πŸ˜‰ BB ime sure your right mate, but i think i will take the three things i liked from the game 1 ba goals how many more would he get with a good partner 2 cabye worked his socks off and is a better player with tiote in there 3 santon came though well and will get better with abetter class of defender in the back 4 imo of coarse
