No deal for Pieters in January

No deal for Pieters
Erik Pieters is a name that is fairly familiar to fans of Newcastle United after months and months of him being linked with a switch to St James’ Park.

In fact a deal was very nearly done in the summer although a disagreement between the NUFC and Pieters’ agent seemed to put the skids under any potential transfer and in the end nothing came of it.

It seemed nailed on that we’d be back for the Dutch international at some point as, being brunt, he is exactly the type of player we need, especially given our current defensive injury crisis. He can play at left-back and in the centre of defence which would kill two birds with one stone and address a fairly large weakness in our squad.

However it appears that PSV Eindhoven are not interested in selling the 23-year-old in the upcoming transfer window. PSC Sporting Director, Marcel Brands spoke to Goal.com exclusively and insisted that no players will be leaving the Philips Stadion in January.

“We are not looking to sell any players at all,” explained Brands. “We are in the race for the title. We are in second place with one game in the Eredivisie and one game in the Europa League to go.”

“We want to finish with wins then we have a short winter break. I don’t expect something to happen to our squad.”

Brands was then quizzed about the possibility of a revival of a deal with Newcastle regarding Pieters, to which he replied:

“No, because, first thing, we won’t sell in the winter and, second thing, he is injured. We think he will be fit again in February and we look forward to him playing again for us.”

I seriously can’t see Newcastle bidding to a level where PSV simply have to sell to be honest so I think this one is pretty much dead in the water, or seems to be anyway. It’s a shame really as getting him in would no doubt sit favourably with Tim Krul given the fact they are mates and all, plus, as said earlier on, he would go some way to solving our defensive lightness.

However there is an urgency with regards to our defender hunt. Put simply our need is now and I honestly don’t think we could take a punt on Pieters and wait until February for him to be fit again, and then perhaps March to be match fit again.

Needs must, and Pieters no longer fits our need.

  1. This is a shame really as I thought he would be the answer to our left-back problem.

However, if Taiwo is available on loan from A.C Milan then I guess he’s just as good a purchase as Pieters would have been.

Any of you guys now who the better left-back is? Pieters or Taiwo?

    Cheers

  3. Thanks for that Matty. I guess if you’re the first choice dutch left-back then you can’t be too bad!

  4. I thought we had Santon as left back despite him being right footed. 😯

We have Raylor, Perch and simpson and Santon as possible right backs.

Santon, Raylor and Fergie as left backs.

I say forget about left and right backs and concentrate on our priority.

A centre back who is a centre back and not a right back or left back who can play central defence. 😯

You never see the best centre backs slotting into other defensive positions. Totally different roles. 🙄

  5. I heard he would cost 3 million, for a 23yr old Dutch international starter who’s quick and strong, for the sake of a month he would be out, **** it sign him up that’s wot I say, bargain surely !!!

  6. as i said on an early thread……. i never saw this deal going ahead – especially after he knackered his foooot.

oh well, back to the drawing board –

Apart from Taiwo – who are the other options for a left back? ❓ ❓

  7. Does anyone know if the taiwo deal is a view to permanent or is he just cover for the season cos of injuries ? It’s just he’s not happy at milan he’s not playing nor has he settled in Italy reports have suggested

      (Quote)

  8. @13 – Matty

Rumour has it that it will be a loan move until the end of the season, with the view to a permanent transfer.

  9. J_w_Edwards- cheers, makes me think santon is being lined up for rb if simpson doesn’t sign and taiwo in raylor will battle 4 lb

  10. imagine if we signed alex and samba 😯 😯 , we would have the strongest defence goin then 😆 😆 how much is alex actually goin for?

  12. Toonsy- alot of my toon friends think you need raylor on the pitch for his delivery and lethal shooting an freekick ability despite his defence incapabilitys, a think cabaye can fill the delivery void though wot u reckon ?

      (Quote)

  13. matty – i agree with your mates in a way but in a way i dont , its hard to say!! if i had to decide then i wouldnt have raylor in my first 11 as he simply isnt good enough at the back ! i think santon will take left back soon and raylor wont get many more chances ! hes done brilliant for standing until jan but i think he makes too many mistakes which has cost us in the last 4 games

      (Quote)

  14. Tiote now ‘very doubtful’ for Saturday. He’ll never play in a toon shirt again.

But that’s ok, cos he’ll go for a massive fee 🙄

      (Quote)

  15. Matty – Agree. Cabaye has just as many assists and goals as Raylor and if he takes more set pieces he will get more.

      (Quote)

  16. tiote doubtful again???? 😕 😕 😕 now it is starting to sound a bit suspicious!! bye bye tiote cheers for playing the 5 and a half year contract 😆

      (Quote)

  17. Army69- I agree he was sufficient for some time but has been found out he also restricted guittierrez from his attacking duties, surely as you say santon comes in and will travel up and down the left with alot more ease than raylor has done, don’t think there would be many moans if santon comes in at lb.

  19. franky same here , smith is slow and finished!! abeid is quick and ready to rumble! he looked good against forest!! do you think benny wil start sat? ive stil got a question mark above my head why he didnt come on last sat when we needed goals 😐

  20. abeid and cabaye in the middle sounds canny like!! i havent seen much of abeid to decide on the lad but he cant be worst than smith haha

  21. Army69- aye a thought he was gonna stand by benny n stick with him he’s tricky and a think will get goals if pards plays him

  22. Tiote was always a doubt surely or did it say somewhere he was definately fit and I’ve missed it?

Raylors scored some crackers but to be fair he takes more bad set pieces than good imo.

  23. Smudger wasn’t brought on for nothing!

    He’s the new Tiote! 😯

To quote Lambias again according to Baba Vanga’s crystal ball.

“we tried to get a replacement for Tiote but we have a great professional and experienced player already on our books in Ex England international Alan Smith.
He is Mikes favourite player and will save NUFC £10m!”. – Lambias February 2012 😯

I’ve had my eye on one of those snuggie jump suits pj carryons preferably in a pastel colour.

Does anyone have any and if so, are they easy to use if you need the toilet.? 😯

  27. Army, that’s not a bafd idea but surely not Obertan there. I’d go 433 with Abeid, Cabaye and Jonas in the middle and HBA, Ba, Shola across the front. Cabaye deepest of the 3 and Abeid and Jonas to attack.

  30. Georgio- do you not think this is the type of game were obertan is good, you know against a newly promoted side his pacey game is good when he’s at the races.

      (Quote)

  31. Matty – the kid has pace but lacks most other things including self belief and bottle. He’d be useless anywhere but the wing.

  32. Billy- fair enough just think if we have better back 4 out, that will breed confidence an were at home there key factors no ?

  33. What – Tiote still not fit? Which doctor did he see? Despite all the talk I don’t think Chelsea are interested. That kid Romeu looks great and they still have Essien and Mikel. Occurs to me they’d be more interested in Colo to partner Terry.

      (Quote)

  34. Georgio- he showed at Stoke hes got an end product and looked a good winger, so is he just young at 22 and playing like a headless chicken at times or can he mature into a cracking winger with an end product ??

      (Quote)

  35. I gather you like the lad Matty but Stoke was his only good performance on a night when the whole team played above themselves. He had his chances at OT too. I’d only ever play him as a late sub when defences tire and games stretch.

      (Quote)

  36. Georgio- he’s far from who I’d consider to be one of our better players but he showed at Stoke he’s got it so that leads me to think it must be there, that’s why am showing a little faith mate.

  40. Lets not get carried away here, the Pieters deal is only off for the Jan window… but if they don’t want to sell him yet and he’s injured til Feb anyway then it’s not a surprise.
But I don’t think that’s the end of it with Pieters as they have been linked with him and tracking him for a while now, and him at the club would be great for Krul.
He’s my theory… some of you will disagree coz you think our board are fat greedy mindless tossers… but here it is anyway:
The board have obviously made enquiries about Pieters and will have been aware of his injury. PSV have said they don’t want to sell in Jan (wish we had the same attitude about our players), so fair enough. Newcastle have moved their efforts to getting Taiwo in, but only on loan rather than the permanent deal Pieters would have got. So my theory is that Pardew wants the cover now but the player he wants isn’t available to buy until the summer. We get Taiwo in now and do with Pieters what we have done with Maiga, spend the rest of the season making the agreements with PSV and Pieters then sign him in summer, before the euros when he’ll play brilliant and increase his valuation by £20m then sell him before he even kicks a ball in a black and White shirt. (the last bit was a joke, but thought I’d get it in before the doubters get in there)

      (Quote)

  41. sharpy17- your right there and if true would be cracking, you sure it’s not cashley opting to loan instead of buying just to be tight ??

      (Quote)

  42. Marty – I’m sure many will think that but, whilst he obviously isn’t one for splashing the cash, he is spending on Maiga and looking to buy a CB so it wouldn’t make sense to me.
Also, he got HBA on loan and went on to buy him, so a loan deal doesnt necessarily mean he’s not prepared to commit.
I think they are just being astute, something the previous board were seriously lacking and wasted millions.

      (Quote)

  43. Matty, I think Obertan will be shown up against Swansea. You look at Scott Sinclair and the other lad they have on the right who’s name escapes me just now but reminders me of Fox, they are proper wingers and exactly what we are missing at the mo. I read and contributed to stats article yday about Jonas and Oberatan and alot of people blamed there poor performances on our weak full backs. I’d don’t believe Swanseas full backs are better than ours but I know that their wingers are better than ours.

As for Alex, I don’t see him at Newcastle. There is an outside chance of striking a loan deal as part of the Tiote deal, but if Alex has been transfer listed and carries a small transfer fee of £5m for example, I see a club like juventus buying him and offering him higher wages

      (Quote)

  44. Sharpy17- my feet are firmly grounded with regards to nufc making Europe- ridgewell acceptable for cover and early rounds of Europa ?

      (Quote)

  45. Sharpy17- aye Swansea wingers going forward great but they dont help there full backs which will give us some joy u agree ??

      (Quote)

  46. Matty, re Ridgewell – yeah I think that’s fair. He has a good work ethic and would fit into our newfound team spirit.
We need a good clear out of players who are taking up squad numbers, and some of those will go in the summer when their contracts expire. Could we have done with him against Norwich, and would he have got in ahead of Perch and Simmo….. Hell yes!!!
Let’s be right, he’s not going to be first choice ahead of who we have and who we’d like to get in, but is he better than Perch, yes so if Perch left and Ridgewell left that’s improving our squad

      (Quote)

  47. Aye that’s the kidda, I’d love to say yes but I have little faith in Guti and Obertan as attacking forces at the mo, hope I’m wrong but think Dyer and Sinclair will be more or a danger to our full backs I’m afraid. That said, I still fancy us to win at home, this would be my line up:

    Krul
    Raylor/Colo(if fit)/Perch/Santon
    HBA/Cabaye/Vukic(or)Aheid/Guti
    Best/Ba

      (Quote)

  48. Would agree but shola hit the bar against chelski n played the through ball for dembas 2nd at Norwich so think pardew would play him ahead of best unfortunately
