Game On! Bolton v Newcastle

Welcome to Bolton
Are we all feeling suitably stuffed after the festivities of yesterday? Well hopefully the only stuffing we’ll be reflecting upon later is that of Bolton Wanderers this afternoon.

To be honest I’ve gone beyond wanting a stuffing. A scrappy 1-0 win courtesy of an own goal will do for me as it will end a run of six games without victory which has put our great start to the season in jeopardy.

However it won’t be easy and the first goal will be important. It was evident against West Brom when they scored first. Prior to that we looked confident and never really looked in any danger of losing but once Peter Odemwingie put the Baggies ahead we started to lose that bit of confidence and ended up chasing things which if course suited West Brom.

Today will be much the same in my opinion. Bolton may have got a positive result against Blackburn in midweek but prior to that they went through an awful run that saw then planted near the foot of the table. Confidence will still be lacking from Owen Coyle’s men and a goal against them will set the alarm bells ringing once more. Consequently the reverse is also true and if Bolton score first they’ll gain more confidence.

Anyway, that is enough of a preview from me! Why? Simple really. Shamrock has once again written a most excellent preview which you can view here which you can then follow up on by reading a bit of a stat-attack from our resident statto here.

As far as a stream goes, I’m hopeful of finding one although you can never be certain of finding a reliable stream. What I will say is that it is being broadcast on quite a few overseas channels so the chances of finding one are fair to moderate. If you do stumble across one then why not share it with the rest of us?

That just about wraps this festive ‘Game On’ feature up and now it’s over to you guys to get the banter and chit-chat flowing.

Howay the lads!

  6. What a relief to get a 3points today. We will still be 7th. So next game would be 6th vs. 7th. 😈

  7. Toby le rhone , i live in Bristol talk is Maynard will go for around 3 or 3.5 m and Sunderland sniffin around too . I can tell you Toon have an interest too. Fat Ash will need to box clever to get him and he would imo be a great signing for toon ,very very fast player.

  8. Ameobi just had an aweful 30 secos!

Good solid win, nice to have Willo back.

Wins breed confidence, bad run over.

Bolton aweful, Coyle on borrowed time?

Obertan had a much better 2nd half. Fair play.

Couple of signings in the right areas and we will be ok this season.

    Howay the lads!

  9. I cant see us giving liverpool a game and a half now like, if we beat them we will be well back on track! Howay the lads!

  10. @267 yeah he has done a lot just look to his pass stats. The guy never threw the ball he tries to find a partner and give him a good ball. He has played 30 minutes you think he will score 5 goals and make 3 assists

  11. A previous post of mine called for wingers to provide low balls into the six yard box and for strikers to get on the end of them. Its the way we are set up to play, so it is the way we have to play to get a result. Job done!

  12. Oh and with that,we finally broken our decade long curse of not winning on boxing day? 😳 😳

“Toonsey , you have to admit now best is terrible”

No. No I don’t….I’ve never said he was a world class individual like, just that he can (and has done) do a job for us. Yes he’s been **** for a few games, but he’s also done well for us at times. I’m not flippant nor fickle and tend to look at the bigger picture rather than individual instances.

    “good footballers win you games”

Aye, like Ryan Taylor. He must be super good as he’s won us two games single handedly this season 🙂

  16. Well, that’s the Bolton curse put to bed as well this season.
I see in this thread , fans still love to give the team or individuals stick eh.
We played ok today…yep ok…not brilliant, not **** but ok and we didn’t concede and yet regardless of Boltons position, it was still a football away curse we had to overcome as the stats go.

A well earned 3 points , plus a fitter Williamson for the next game with a game under his belt which he done well in for what he had to do.

I’ll sum up my thoughts with marks out of 10.

Krul, did ok for what he had to do which was mainly catch long balls but Bolton didn’t really offer too many worries. 6/10

Raylor, I thought he had a decent game and done what was needed , plus it was nice to see him on set pieces and put a great ball in for Ben Arfa’s goal 7/10

Colo, basically made defending look easy for just about all the match and only got into mild difficulty once but knew Krul was coming, he looked accomplished throughout though.8/10 my man of the match.

Williamson, did all the simple stuff and coped fairly easily with what came into the box and played it in a no nonesense way, looked tired in the last 20 mins but that’s only natural 6/10

Simpson, again looked comfortable for most of the game apart from Petrov getting the better the odd time but that’s to be expected. Still looks like he gets better though. 6/10

Jonas, not one of his better games but still tried as usual but didn’t seem to get a foothold in the game, especially first half, seemed to improve a bit in the second but he’s definitely not the Jonas we know for some reason. 5/10

Cabaye, as usual he puts in a great shift breaking play up and some neat touches and some decent passes, he is a major cog in this team even when he’s not in brilliant mode. 7/10

Tiote, getting fitter by the game and as usually he’s like Cabaye in that he’s a terrier when closing down, his game will naturally bring him yellows and that’s just part and parcel, I’d like him to use the ball a bit better at times because he has a habit of trying to do a bit too much when in possession which if thought out better could unleash a nice attack. 7/10

Obertan, I thought this lad had a decent game to day and tried his heart out and was full of running and not shy of wanting the ball, a nice assist for Ba’s goal topped off a decent game for this lad and I’ll give him 7 and a half/10

Ba, didn’t really get into the game as much as he would have liked but still got into some good position and worked hard for the team, it’s just a shame we didn’t offer much in a dire first half but he showed what he’s all about with his goal .6/10

Best, definitely one of his worst games for us and didn’t really get going to be fair…a few decent touches was all that really stood out and nothing seemed to come off when he did get into the box. Lacked composure and looked a bit out of sorts. 5/10
    Subs.
Ben Arfa, basically came on and helped change the game from dire to watchable and showed some clever touches as then his goal, which was a nice composed finish. The game was dead as a contest until he came on and until he did come on , all I could see winning the game was an horrendous mistake by either side until he came on. From then on we just upped out game and got the breaks we needed. 7/10

Shola, to be honest he didn’t have much time to do a lot because Bolton had most of the latter balls, hoying them up field. 5/10

Perch, I though he did well in the little time he had and just got in there and broke up what was needed. 6/10

Pardew, I thought he played it correct today in playing Willo even though he was maybe a game away from full match fitness but he knew we needed height. I know people think Pardew is mad at times for not bringing on certain players when you want him to, but the man clearly knows what he’s doing and remember, even god himself can put on players that don’t perform to expectations just as much as starting a player that doesn’t. W e won and put a so called curse to bed .

    Referee

Walton gave us very little but luckily he didn’t affect the outcome but I am getting sick of ref’s like him who immediately pull us up for fouls yet hesitates when we get fouled and rarely gave us any free kicks. Cahill must be Walton’s nephew or something. Overall I thought he was a **** ref 3/10.

So there you go that’s my take. 😀

  17. I remember you saying he was very good and would get 15 goals this season and I said he won’t get near 10 and was pap ha
R taylor can deliver a sublime dead ball and that is capable of winning a game !
Even when best scores (not often) his all round game is not prem standard !
    Imo 😉

  18. SO happy to reach 30 points, we looked solid as anything that game, even if first half we couldnt create squat.

Hilarious reading back the comments of people now, ben arfa goal looked the only option after all that chat!
Think basically toonsy doesn’t like people making huge statements, ie rather than saying “Jonas IS ****”, saying “Jonas IS PLAYING ****”. Which he has been recently.

I personally think Obertan can come good, his crossing isn’t awful it’s just his decision making. Loads of wingers start out with that as a weakness, look at Nani.
The main thing is that he troubles defenders, which there is no denying he does.
I would like to see Benny get a run instead of Best now. We’ll need him all guns blazing when Ba heads off.

  19. yes me i will put him on the wing, if Pard wanna absolutely play with 2 guys upfront i will play HBA in the wing. But if he wanna play with a number 10 i will put him as a number 10. I don’t care for me when i look to his ball touch and his pass or ball control i think whatever the position, the guy is better than most of other newcastle players, and so he must play.
