No January striker for NUFC

No striker says Pardew
Alan Pardew has confirmed that the club are unlikely to sign a striker in the January transfer window.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Liverpool game he stated that we will just have to go with what we’ve got after the collapse of the Modibo Maiga deal.

Personally I think it’s an utterly ridiculous situation and feel we should have been looking to build the team by signing a striker AND a defender. Now it seems almost certain (maybe) that we’ll just get the defender and nothing else which is a frightening prospect when you consider we’ll be losing Demba Ba for a few weeks to the African Cup of Nations. Heaven forbid if he ever got injured…

After Pardew’s public disapproval over the failure to sign a striker over the summer I’d have thought that we’d be looking for one. A sign of intention, a statement to the fans, anything. I really really should have known better.

Of course there is another potential avenue although I personally feel it’s a rather slim one. Why would Pardew advertise the fact we’re in for a striker? Like a said, it’s a slim avenue but there is some logic there.

I’m really annoyed by this. I understand we need to boost the defence but there are other areas that need addressing also, such as the fact we don’t have a regular goalscorer beyond Ba. Goals win you games after all…

Readjust your expectations lads n lasses!

  1. Suprise Suprise. So we are not spending £25m-£30m on players this January then?!

Toucch wood Ba does not get injured, but they obviously had a plan all along with regard to formation whilst Ba was away – afterall – Maiga would have been gone too….

I think we will be alright, lets just get a decent, reliable defender in and see what happens this summer. January is always a bad time to do business, but I’ll be completely p*ss*d off if we fail to do dome decent business this summer – especially with so many quality free transfers kicking about.

  2. No big surprise ,once taylor we pulled the plug on the Maiga deal as fatty dusent want to spend to much ,i reckon we will get some CB in for a mill or 2 ,if i was Maiga i would sue the club for lairing through there teeth agen

  3. Ah, OK, I missed that, which makes my last comment on the other thread make me look a bit of a ***. 😳

    😆

…I’ll still live in hope though. Toonsy, where is the quote of what Pardew said? I wouldn’t mind ‘reading into’ it.

(btw, that ‘Michael’ in the Facebook panel to the right is Cabaye’s double)

  4. Shamrock – There is, but it’s paraphrased by journos on Twitter so no full ones. However it’s been on SSN, in video, of Pardew saying that we’ll go with what we’ve got up front.

  5. I dont think we need a top of the line defender either, just a decent, reliable one that is inexpensive. Willo is more than capable of covering for Taylor, so all we need is a 4th choice cover who has enough about him to keep the others on their toes…

If there is no quote then I’m not reading much into this ‘news’ at all. Lets just wait and see what happens 🙂

  6. After all the 100% guarantees we were given in the summer they have wasted another four months and failed again.

In the meantime they’ve been taking money off the Toon Army during a world economic crisis.

We now have the pleasure of paying our hard-earned cash to watch Best, Ameobi & Lovenkrands.

    It is criminal.

    Llambias out!!!

  7. @7 – Ah got you. Not too worried by that to be honest, as explianed above… Our squad will be shorn of quite a few fring eplayers this summer and there will be space in the squad and wages free’d up, so I’ll be totally annoyed if we dont make a few decent signings – like mentioned above – plenty of bargains to be had. We need not spend big…

  8. It’s really not the end of the world guys. We are 7th and comfortable. Ba wont be gone for long and Maiga would have been gone too, so it makes no difference to our options up front duing the period of the ACON. Lets not panic. We are doing well and other teams will be losing key players for this period too, whilst not bringing anybody in. It’s an over inflated market in January and we should all have known Ashley would not do much business in this window.

  9. we never really expected to sign a striker did we,its jabba we are talking about, but never mind WOLFIE will explain it all for us the 25mil hes talking about spending must be going on a top defender 😀

  10. Ah, cheers el Toonsio, I was gona say I don’t believe anything the Daily Mail prints, but that quote is very ominous. We don’t sign players when we say nothing, so that’s as good as wrapped up for me. 🙁

…on the plus side (if there is one) at least Pardew has put it to us at an early stage. I’d rather be pissed off now for a couple of days, than build my hopes up for 5 weeks and be mightily pissed off for a 6th. 😐

I’m sure we’ll manage without Ba for a handful of games. The other ‘business end’ is far more important to me.

      (Quote)

  11. I was initially pissed off but I’ve calmed down. Guess the signs were there anyway, plus we do need to boost the defence desperately 😕

      (Quote)

  12. Yeah Shamrock, I’m with you on that mate.
Ice, yeah, we’ll have to wait until the end of January, but if it turns out how it’s looking like, I want a whole article on Wolfie, and an accompanying walk of shame. 😆

  13. That’s it Toons. Like I say, it’s a plus for me that he’s came out and said it now, and not the usual “trying really hard” flannel. I think the board may have realised that only riles the fans more, to build up hopes that is.

  14. Well not totally surprised but disappointed, For me Andy Johnson would be a canny signing hes leaving fulham and clubs like Blackburn are being mentioned for a million or two we would get a proven finsher who wouldnt want to be up north for too long but for a season or two it might have worked, Its against the age policy but we have made exceptions in the past.

Hopefully they sure up the back four again so we can pick up points like we were at the start of the season before Ba really hit form, Frustrating as you can see that 4th place is wide open within spitting distance we arent out of contention…

  15. Is it time for I told you so to the dreamers (not yet) but to anyone with a grain of sense it is obvious ,
Wolfie tells me 20 to 25 mill spent 4 in and none leaving , isn’t and never will happen under ashley ! And all the words and all the spin and all the dreams won’t make it happen .
Ashley at nufc = mediocrity and bad times.

      (Quote)

  16. ah well at least we know where our or shall I say Ashleys ambitions lie. 10th, ne need to try and push any higher. If Ba gets fuuked we’re screwed..

I’ll be mighty pissed if we lose Collo/tiote and bring in only a Defender.

makes the Miaga failure more obvious now..

  17. ROD every commont he (wolfie) makes is a article, maybe he will book a ticket on troys train now instead 😀 😀

  18. Well – if Mr Miagi was their target, and he fell through, patience Danielsan – better sign collect prayer than wrong one – we wait till summer. Wax on wax off

  19. CC, he’s got a bit of a crock history and he ain’t getting any younger, but I’d snap their arm off for a million. He’s the type of striker we need (little fella, bit of trickery, good finisher).

7th in the league is mediocrity then? Disapointing we arent bringing anyone in upfront , Im assuming we have about 6 mil to spend ( since that is waht we had agreed to pay for Maigbia ) so that rules out that Ajax defender! Still think we will beat Liverpool fri and hold Man Utd for a point in the next game and go on to finish the season well within the top 10 which was the aim this season. Hopefully we get a good cup run as well!

  21. ….CC, spending 1m on a makeweight, proven goalscorer like Johnson could be the difference between us finishing 11th and 7th. I’m sure he’d pay his own fee with regards to our table finish and equivalent £Ms in prize money. IMO|.

looks bad doesnt it.., but… its not even Jan yet. we might get someone on loan or spend 2-3mil on a forward.

I hope we dont lose Collo and tiote, if we do I’d expect us to make signings to replace them.

    we’ll see

  26. So after Lambastad saying that the renaming of the ground had to be done because we needed to bring in a Striker, does that mean he was lying just to get the fans onside ???
I cant believe they would tarnish Mr Maigas name by saying he failed a medical just to get out of the deal, and make it look like they were trying to sign one ?? Nah I do believe it because he and Jabba the C@nt are 2proven lying bastads.

      (Quote)

  27. Aye CC, and when they both came back Maiga would probably go straight to the bench anyway!

    (that link looks promising)

  28. I am Keith! How could i not be? We are going well in the league and we have a good team. Yes we need a few new players in , will not and cannot dispute that , but I would rather us wait and sign the right player than just buying for the sake of it. Its clear we dont have a bottomless pit and we are spending within our means , which is a good thing.

  29. talking about the renaming of SJP that reminds me only 3 more days to go to get the big name sponsor for our shirts, wonder who it will be ?? Nah it wouldn’t be SD would it ?

  30. Yeah Dave, but in c*nt-face’s defence he said that at a time when our defence wasn’t shot to ****. Just swap the word ‘striker’ for ‘defender’ and it still applies. Admittedly we’ve needed another defender for about 3 years.

I’ll agree though, it does seem unbelievable and outrageously underhand to fake a failed medical. But they are a devious pair.

      (Quote)

  31. Llambias added: “The fans want us to buy more players, we need a new striker in January, we’ll need replacements in the summer.

“We need to give ourselves as much of a chance as possible.”

  33. good point BigDave regarding the naming rights and a striker..

hmmm links well to Pards comment when he mentioned Ashley asking if we need a defender and the miaga deal collapsing.

I reckon we’ll get no striker in (hope I’m wrong)
    lose Tiote, perhaps Collo
and St James will remain SD Arena 😥

      (Quote)

  34. No one knows who we will sign, I don’t know who we will sign. Pardew probably knows roughly who he will sign.
I believe we will spend some money, probably about 20/25 million bringing in the quality we need to finish this season comfortably and also set up up nicely for the summer.
Pardew is saying we won’t buy a striker and maybe we won’t but then again, maybe we will.
Is it better for Pardew to play it down or better for him to shout out that we are bringing in so and so?

If he tells the fans that we are bringing a striker in for definite and we don’t bring one in, the bouoycouutte banners will be out lol.

If Pardew keeps his trap shut, then if he has anyone identified, then other clubs won’t know about it and also we as fans won’t know until it becomes official.
Either way, it means we have a better chance of getting the player over the line without other clubs coming in and stealing the deal and also it stops the fans from calling Pardew a liar , a sneak, or whatever they decide is right for the occasion. 😀

  35. Richie no but they said that puma needed the name by the end of the month Nov or very latest Dec, they wont annonce it but if it was a big company im sure it would be known, but it is known allready by some, who the shirt sponsor will be.

So we cant afford more than a defender after going through the ***** of renaming the ground even though a lot of fans on here said it was no real big deal because atleast we would strenghten the team with the sponsor money, ?? So what happened to the rest of the Carroll money ??

  36. Now then Big Dave

Good thanks – won’t be finished till spring as I’ve stone walls to build and the frost kind of rules it out. But I’m happy enough.

Hope you and yours are having a good xmas too!

      (Quote)

  37. Dave….the flaw in that is that “they said” 😉 😆 ……he’d have been better just saying Puma needed to know as soon as possible to incorporate it with the new design of shirt, but Delboy and thinking before speaking don’t usually go together 😉

  38. Stardy all good mate, as for your stone walls mate thats the price you pay for building a Manor house instead of a normal one 😆 but im sure it will be all worth it in the end 😉

  39. “Of course we had also hoped to secure a further striker in the window, in addition to Demba Ba. Work to bring a striker into the club began early in the summer. Negotiations were complex and protracted and unfortunately it was disappointing that ultimately we could not secure our priority target.

We understand that supporters will feel frustrated that we did not sign another striker during the window, but it was not for lack of trying that we did not bring our final target in.”

  40. off topic, heard last night the low down on Danny Simpson’s new contract/pay dispute.
It turns out that the majority of Premiership footballers, himself included, aren’t paid by the week or month, but bi-annually! Aye, twice a year!
He is trying to get it changed and that is what the hold up is, from what I was told anyway.

The only figures of that amount I can see being mentioned are the profits going into the club from losing players on the last day of the window.

I hope we do spend, but it’s just not really going to happen is it?

  43. johnotoon@45 , we are not spending within our means thats simply not true ! but good luck to you im glad your happy with Ashley !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wolfie@53 , No one knows for sure thats correct but theres some people on here that have used a mixture of history reality and common sense to work out what they think will hapen ……. i wonder who will be right !
