Pardew planning for the future with transfers

Padew coy on transfer talk
Alan Pardew insists that Newcastle United are committed to strengthening the squad in this transfer, although he also insists that the goal remains long term on Tyneside.

Any new players will fit the club criteria and will not be over the age of 26, and some may even be young enough and rough enough to not even command a first team place straight away.

Pardew uses the slow introduction of Davide Santon as an example of what he means. Santon was given time to settle and integrate on Tyneside before football even came into the equation, a move which has paid dividends according to the manager.

“If you bring in a foreign player there’s the language barrier, they have to settle,” Pardew told the Sunday Sun.

“With Santon, he’s been able to do that without worrying about playing because he’s been on the bench, but I was really pleased with him in midweek , against a top side. His passing, everything about him. He’s a good player.”

“The new person who comes in might have a similar start. I can’t envisage bringing in a player who will go straight into this football team, if I’m honest. That doesn’t mean to say I’m not going to bring anyone in.”

Alan Pardew also insists that he is relaxed about the transfer window and that any new player will have to fit the group of players we already have which includes the mentality of the player. The message is simple – the team is the most important and not one or two individuals.

“The player coming in will certainly be under 26. I’m quite relaxed about it. We’ve got a good group of players and I’d like to bring in a player. But you want to bring in a player that fits into the group, because you don’t want to spoil what we have here.”

“I look at Santon who has had to be patient. He came into the football club for a big fee and didn’t moan, got on with it and got on with his work. Now he finds himself in the team and understands what we’re about.”

Steady away seems to be the order of the day and it would appear that Newcastle have no intention of abandoning their transfer philosophy despite the cracking start we’ve made to the season.

That is a subject for debate in itself but to be honest I can see it from both sides. No doubt the club and some fans will be thinking that the philosophy hasn’t done us too bad when you take a look at our league position whilst there will be others who acknowledge that but also would perhaps like to see a bit more of a leap of faith in the transfer market.

What do you make of it?

  1. I’d love it to be Wrexham away. Wor lass is from Wrexham and I’ve been to quite a few of their games when I’ve gone down to visit the outlaws. They’re utterly desperate for money so it would be a fantastic tie for them.
