Pardew for England?

English eyes on Alan Pardew
Alan Pardew has been tipped to take over as England manager by FA Head of Elite Development, Gareth Southgate.

The former ‘Boro boss is held in high regard at FA Headquarters and works with Trevor Brooking with the aim of trying to improve all aspects of the English game. He believes that his former Crystal Palace team-mate should be considered for the role which Fabio Capello will vacate in the summer.

Harry Redknapp has long been considered a shoe in for the role, but with a court case for alleged tax evasion due to start next week his appointment could court controversy. Roy Hodgson is another candidate although his copybook will have been blotted by a failed spell at Liverpool where he looked out of his depth if truth be told.

This leaves Alan Pardew as the only other realistic appointment when you consider that the FA are looking for a manager who is English and knows the English game. He has impressed over the last 12 months at Newcastle and could have had us 9th but for a final day collapse against West Brom last season, and he has us sat in 7th place this season whilst working in sever budget restraints imposed on him from above. He is also significantly younger than both Hodgson and Redknapp.

“I know how meticulous Alan is in terms of preparation,” Southgate told the Sunday Express. “When he has not been in a job, he has been travelling and has put his time in studying different methods of training. It’s been a great education for him.”

“He’s served his apprenticeship. He was at Reading, did a superb job at West Ham, then went to Charlton and was doing a good job at Southampton, where they had a massive points deduction for going into administration.”

Whether Southgate’s purring is enough for the FA to consider Pardew as a realistic contender for the international job remains to be seen, but if he continues to impress his stock will continue to rise in the eyes of the national media and fans around the country. Southgate is clearly impressed with the job Pardew has done and to be honest I think most of us are, especially when you look back at how his appointment was received just over 14 months ago.

It’s not the first time Pardew has been linked with the England job either. Back at the start of November he effectively ruled himself out of the running and insisted that Harry Redknapp should get it.

“It’s nice to hear your name mentioned with things like that, but in terms of the England job, it’s not for me at this time,” Pardew said on November 4th.

“There’s someone in hospital at the moment, Harry Redknapp, who could definitely do the job though. I think he’s at the right age and he’s had the right experience in his career.”

“When it comes to the England job, I think the most important thing about the position is that the general public need to buy in to whoever the manager is. I think they would willingly buy in to Harry Redknapp, and I think that’s very important. He would definitely be my choice.”

Perhaps Pardew’s stance hasn’t changed and he’s still not interested in the national job? Perhaps his stance has softened and he realises that not many managers have the chance of managing England? I hope it’s the former.

Whilst Pardew still isn’t liked by a section of fans I happen to think we’ve fortunately fallen on our feet with him. He’s doing a grand job which can’t be easy under Laurel and Hardy above him. He’s already said that it can be difficult working for the pair, but he seems to just get along with it and gets us results which is all, as a fan, I’m really bothered about.

For that reason, I hope this is mere speculation on the part of Gareth Southgate and the media.

  1. Only because of the lack of other suitable candidates. He has not won enough yet. 5 years in the Champions League with Newcastle might do it.

  2. Not a cat in hell’s chance imo, Doing a great job for us but hasn’t done enough and isn’t a big enough name(yet) for the FA.
Troy will put his **** in Fenwick’s window if he gets the England job in the summer 😉

  3. lol “IN A Tyneside poll conducted after Chris Hughton’s sacking, 1.8 per cent voted for Alan Pardew to succeed him as Newcastle manager – the same percentage as Paul Gascoigne, who was in rehab at the time.” 😯

thats why ppl always deserve a chance from supporters. in future I’ll button it when I’m ready to question a player / manager. Although I did back Cabaye from the off 😉

  4. I honestly don’t think he is too far away from it. Lack of other candidates? Maybe, but it still means he is in the running.

  5. @Toonsy

defo lack of candidates. you just had to look at the running for the QPR job, same old trash, hoddle, Erickson etc being bandied around.. 🙄

  6. Steve McLaren got the job, so you never know. But I doubt he’d even get offered it now. Let alone accept it…

Where’s Troy, the Lesser Spotted Clown fish. He damaged my rod last night taking such a big bite. He is an endangered species though so catch and release… 😀

  7. Newcastle are entitled to a huge compensation since Pardew is contracted to us for 5 years if I’m not mistaken? Will Pardew instead be forced out by Ashley if the FA comes calling with a huge compensation fee? 😯

  8. Woo hoo hoo hoo. 😆

Come on boys. Bitchy bitchy. 😆

I’m wary of commenting about the thread in case Toonsy packs in. 😆

As far as Pardew goes, if it was down to the FA to make a choice now, I don’t see beyond Pardew. He has the right image, he’s proven himself as a decent manager which has seen the icing on his cake this season and there no baggage.

As for the people’s choice around the country it would be The Napp.

As for the FA phoning me, ive heard FA. 😯

  9. Getting ready to go for the train. Not expecting a thriller this lunchtime more a battle of wits as we try and break them down. For this reason I would go with Benny on the right.
SWP will be a threat on the break but don’t think they have a goal scorer in their ranks which might be a blessing.
Best and Shola? Would like to see Vuckic with one of them

I’m still in my laundry basket as Mrs Stavers refuses to acknowledge it’s not normal behaviour. I will last the week if I have to.

@mark, I woke up this morning with a checked shirt on and none of us wear checked shirts!! 😯

      (Quote)

  13. That would sum our luck up. Finally we get a manager who has a vision, wants to build something and finally looks like he’ll be given time by an owner and he gets snapped up by England!

Personally think it will be Arry but wouldn’t discount Pardew in the long term if we continue to progress.

Look at it this way, if Pardew gets the job it means we’re doing bloody well, so I’ll take that.

  14. @Troy lol so Thuds been in your basket al this time stalking your movements 😆 thought he looked like a checked-shirt saboteur

  20. Toonsy – not bad buddy, I like it.

I certainly think Pardew is a credible candidate, regards of how many other people would be in the running. I dont believe winning this should matter too much, I mean, how managers prepare for domestic trophies is different to international tournaments.
I think one think Pardew has shown so far with Newcastle is that he goes into games with a plan B and will look to have a squad of players who allow him different options. The Bburn game as an example, changing from 4-4-1-1 to 4-4-2 when we weren’t playing well… and ultimately winning the game. (Toonsy, you’ve got me started mate!)
I could put forward a great case for Pardew for England. His faith in youth, his ability to deal with egos Barton/HBA, his handling of the press, the style of football he wants his teams to play, man management… I could go on.
But the truth is, as much as I could fight his case, I know he won’t get offered the job, which I’m pleased about!!.. He’s proving to be a very good club manager and long may it continue.

I would have Stuart Pearce as next Emgland manager to be honest, if as a national football team, we are building this “legacy”, he’s already part of it and knows, not only the senior players but the under 21 squad coming through as well.
Again, as much as I could fight his case, I don’t believe it will be him either.

I think the FA have already been in touch with Spurs for the melted wax work, Captain Corrupt will take over at the helm. His income will obviously go down coz he’ll loose out on his dodgy transfer bungs but nevermind, he moves in all the same circles as the “elite” players of England so they will probably be happy to have him in and we’ll have another manager who does ok but wins F’ all.

Woke up positive today though so going for 2-0 the toon. Fancy Best to score today as well.

      (Quote)

  21. Troy – Perhaps not but I think they will be under immense pressure to appoint him and he does have a lot of friends in the media…

  22. Hes deffo good enough. An excellent appointment and lets hope MA has taken as much care over any compensation release clause as he does with the players and that Lee Clark is up for the job. Only concern is whether LC can buy into and manage under the, very successful, constraints set by MA.

  23. How many English managers in the Prem ?

Is it only a choice between Redknapp , Pardew and Hodgson ?

Mourinho could be a special appointment.

      (Quote)

  24. Steve Bruce and Neil Warnock are available for the England job , and would not incur any compensation costs to the FA .

That must make them favourites !!

  27. If you ask around the fans of other clubs, they still see Pardew as smarmy and somebody who has not done a lot in his career up until now. Like most people here, I know that’s not the case. However, the FA will know that he would generally be an unpopular choice with the majority of fans.

That’s all good for us of course. The fans want Redknapp and if he is found not guilty in Court then he’s a shoe-in for the job.

I understand there is a lack of talent around when it comes to English managers for an English job, but just cannot see Pardew getting the nod.
