“Newcastle and Lyon are talking about me” – Aly Cissokho

Cissokho hints at Toon move
Have we found the transfer saga of this transfer window? It’s certainly starting to look that way isn’t it?

This time around it seems to involve a long-standing transfer link in the form of Aly Cissokho. The Lyon defender has been linked with Newcastle for some time, but there have been conflicting reports of interest, medicals, discussions and allsorts.

Earlier on today I posted an article containing quotes attributed to a representative of Aly Cissokho who goes by the name of Ali Barat. He seemed quite dismissive of Newcastle and insisted that no agreement had been reached between the two clubs.

However the player himself has now admitted that a deal could be in the offing and insists that he is just waiting for the green light from Lyon to allow him to talk to Newcastle.

“I am waiting for the green light from Lyon,” he told Sky Sports. “I am a Lyon player and if they agree a fee with a club, I will then talk to that club.”

“But nothing is done yet and I have not been to Newcastle for a medical. Newcastle and Lyon are talking about me, but there are other teams interested as well.”

Intriguing.

Whether or not there is genuine interest on our part or whether we are just being used as a name to extract some serious bidders remains to be seen but there does seem to be something there. Mind you, there was something there with Mevlut Erding and Modibo Maiga yet nothing came of it in the end and this one could well end up going the same way.

One thing I’m pretty certain on though, is the fact that if (and it’s still a big if) we sign Cissokho we’ll see Danny Simpson heading away from St James’ Park. His contract saga has rolled on too long and we’ve already had warning from Alan Pardew suggesting that if Simpson didn’t sign then he’d be disposed of. Sounds clinical doesn’t it?

That’s life… That’s business…

  1. I think Simmo has been improving and could be a real asset for us in the long term, however he’s not top 4 material by a long shot and I cannot understand why he is dragging his feet over signing for us. Must come down to greed, because nobody else sniffing around the top 6 are going to sign him.

  2. Thought people were saying this guy was ****? I dunno why Lyon would want rid if he’s such a good full back?

I thought it was about strength in depth too? So no point signing him them offloading Simmo. 3 full backs of Santon, Simmo and ??? is a much better prospect, plus we’d also have Raylor as a very last resort.

      (Quote)

  3. Actually, on second thoughts maybe they will if he’s cheap? Stoke, Villa, Everton, Swansea etc would all be interested no doubt…

      (Quote)

  4. I think Simpson would be a cracking player to retain for squad strength/competition, but he’s been a regular starter ever since he joined us so I can understand why he wouldn’t want to drop down the pecking order. Shame really as he’s been really improving these last few weeks.

On Cissokho, I’m still unsure. I keep hearing El Toro’s opinion on him in my head which sets alarm bells ringing as he is one of the more knowledgeable, informed and level-headed bloggers when it comes to foreign players. Then I hear Dan raving about him, and he also knows his stuff, especially with French players 😕

  5. Don’t worry toonsy this site is much better than that sh1tty chronicle one.

RE Cissokho At least we’re talking to a club about someone which is positive! I’m not expecting incomings I’ll take a left back

The person saying ”I dunno why Lyon would want rid if he’s such a good full back” get off it man, why does any club sell a player there’s many reasons so that’s daft to say. Why did inter sell santon? guess you want raylor back at left back?

I know some people don’t really rate Cissokho but Simpson isn’t that good defensively either. Was jose that good a defender or did he just use pace and strength to not get beat?

Some people would probably pass up on messi because he isn’t big enough or something

      (Quote)

  6. I know that Simpson isn’t top 4 quality. But how come everyone just assumes that by default, an unknown, unproven player from a different league is?

  8. Shamrock, from what I understand, everything has been sorted in terms of length or contract and salary it’s just an issue of how it is paid to him, don’t fully understand it. I think he wants double bubble for bank holidays and the club only want to pay time and a third.
I agree though, think he’d be an asset and a good squad player for injuries or volume of games if we do achieve Europe.
I’m sure Newcastle are talking with Lyon but if I were Aly I wouldn’t be booking a flight to Geordieland just yet. Lyon would have to drop their asking price substantially for this deal to come off.
Still Pieters for LB for me please.
Very little paper talk re toon transfers like. I like that, hopefully means were too busy talking to clubs than press.

I see Samba has handed a transfer request in!!

      (Quote)

  9. The reason lyon are selling him is strange as they dont have a replacement.
I personally dont think he is any better than santon or simmo but dont watch him week in week out but for the supposed sum of £7m would rather that go to a decent striker.

ANyone thought Cisse would be a great buy? Scores goals, dembas mate so demba would stay in summer. They could be some force and we were apparently in for him in summer?

Also said would love to join england….. 😉

      (Quote)

  10. Aren’t Lyon at the top of their expenditure? And hasn’t Aulas said that they need to sell before they buy?

    Just a thought….

      (Quote)

  11. Cisse and a cheap young CB like tomkins or rhys williams something of that ilk would consist of an incredible transfer window.
    Likelihood 3/10

      (Quote)

  12. Liam…Cisse would be my first choice like…..better than that Messi fella, he’s too short for the Prem 😉

      (Quote)

  13. FSOTC – It’s more the fact that it’s an identical headline that has pissed me off! Mind you, i actually beat it going by publishing times, but Newsnow picked the Chronicle up one minute before this, so in essence the Chronicle have copied me 😛

  14. Re Simmo: Really happy with him recently, everythings been spot on. Goal line clearances are a bonus, if that goes in against Man U we draw IMO. Don’t undertstand why people wanrt rid of him, played 50consecutive games for us, I believe however good Santon, Cissokho et al are I doubt they ever play 50games in a row.

Those who slag Obertan should take a look at Walcott yesterday, both fast, blow hot and cold, can’t cross or shoot and yet one was 12m and in the england team. Least Obertan puts more effort in.

      (Quote)

  15. Liam, you’re talking about Papiss Cisse at Freiburg? I’ve been wondering about him for a long old while. Supposedly we bid for him last year and he still keeps scoring for that awful team of his. I can’t understand why that bid wasn’t resurrected.

      (Quote)

  16. Toonsy, you should get on the horn with Lee Ryder and tell him you’ll find his spies and impale them if he doesn’t stop stealing your headlines. This has the feel of a good old fashioned newspaper war–Pulitzer vs. Hearst.

“Hoo man. That Leo is a bit stringy like. Never make it in the Prem. Not an NUFC player”

Basically! Then pards, “Leo’s on the bench today because he doesn’t work hard enough for this team and to be in this team he needs to work as hard as shola”

Andrew @ 7 Come on mate open your eyes. He isn’t top 7 let alone top 4. I’m saying Santon is better than Simpson as that’s who I would play there if a LB was brought in. Would you have not bought santon because Raylor has played in this league before? He was ‘unknown and unproven’ like you say Cissokho he’s played in the champions league before, how many times has Simpson?

      (Quote)

  18. Liam Southern Toon, I would love Cisse to come (scored for senegal yesterday) but I think there’s more chance us buying a 7m defender than a 13m striker.

      (Quote)

  19. Toonsy could be right there. Would be very suprised if we signed him. Could be a revelation for us but just cant see it

  20. Career Stats Walcott Vs Obertan
    Both aged 22.
    Goals – Obertan 11 – 45 Walcott
    Assists – Obertan 13 – 35 Walcott
    Appearances Obertan 148 – 248 Walcott

Average Obertan 6 games per direct involvment in goal.
Average Walcott 3 games per direct involvment in goal.

Obertan is cack a mon avis. Walcott is way above his level.

      (Quote)

  21. There are just so many constraints to be dealt with before we can buy any player: Right position, age, skills, playing style, attitude, fitness, contractual situation, price, potential future value, wage demands, etc. etc. etc.

We may not like it because it means most deals fall through – but it is also why so many of our signings turn out to be so good, and why we’re level 5th in the prem having made a profit in the transfer market.

Personally, I can handle the frustration.

      (Quote)

  22. Any news on Erdinc lads?………..or is that another one out the window??

Apparently we had nufc officials talking to him last week. I would prefer a striker in Erdinc than Cissokho at the mo, he might not have the best goals ratio but we need a fast bellamy type striker for cabaye and arfa.

      (Quote)

  23. I dont want Erdinc. Had his chance. Right out of here. BTW – Agree with Whumpie re: transfer policy. 😀

      (Quote)

  24. Walcott cost ten times what Oba did and is one of the big success stories (albeit in a dip of form at the moment). Comparing to him is pointless. If you’re going to call any player that fails that kind of test “cack” you’re not going to be very happy with our squad, are you?

Cabaye is cack because he’s not as good as Messi. Best is cack because he’s not as good as Shearer. Jonas is cack because his hair isn’t as nice as Ginola’s.

It’s just looking for reasons to snipe at people with no means to respond. The stuff of people with tiny dicks.

    Boils my ****.

Rant over. Peace, love and mungbeans to all. Signing off.

  25. I like Cisse but don’t see Frieburg letting him go halfway through the season. I fear stupid money will be asked for most strikers at this stage of a season. The only one who may be available at a sensible price would be Erdinc as he appears surplus to requirement at PSG.
I personally hope we go for an out and out goal scorer, like an Andy Cole are Darren Bent or Defoe style player, forget working the channel just stay in there and score goals.
Rhodes and Prior fit the bill (ok, Prior was a joke)
With so much possession against QPR and only one listed shot on target, it would suggest our priority should be as much for a striker as a defender.
I personally could see Rodallega fitting into our team better than Cisse, but we’ve never been linked with him so none starter I think

      (Quote)

  26. Whumpie – I was making the point that Obertan has been playing as poorly as walcott recently, yet Obertan’s gettting boos’ and jeers from some sections of our crowd and was using walcott as a reference to that point

    Chill. 🙄

I personally see no great need for Cissokho but it would be typical of our board to buy some because of their future sell on fee.
Need a striker, a pacy one, but Ameobi worked mint with Ba against Man U. Could do with Erding he’s decent on FIFA!

      (Quote)

  27. For me cisse and ba could take us to the next level. In the summer if we add another winger who can actually cross… A Sinclair and hoilett then I believe with another decent defender we could be challenging top 4 or 6 every year.
Cisse is class well worth £12m but unfortunately that’s why we won’t get him

      (Quote)

  28. This lad supposedly goes forward like nobody’s business which could make for a very dangerous attack with Santon on the other side. A cissokho for simpson swap does nothing to fix our depth problem but it would certainly be an improvement. As someone said I doubt Simmo would be happy be content to be a squad player.

I guess we’d still have Raylor and Fergie plus they seem to be grooming Tavs for that RB spot. Still think we need a CB in this window…at least a loaner

      (Quote)

  29. At some points I’ve felt like I’ve been one of the very few actually defending simpson. I still don’t really think he needs to be replaced, he’s english and already very well settled with the rest of our back 4/5. Sometimes he backs off, but he’s also made some tremendous goal line clearances and seems to get in the right positions as well as contributing very well in terms of crosses and overlapping going forward imo. Don’t see why we’d need this guy unless he really is a genuine improvement.

We still need a CB as priority…

      (Quote)

  30. Where’s wee Fergie been lately by the way. With Jonas looking good on the right Sunday I wouldn’t mind giving the lad a run on the left….

      (Quote)

  31. Hey what had happened to that super-duper-turbo high class french midfielder wonderkid (from Lens) which was having a trial last week? Does he still having it? Or we rejected him? I only know that Jason Prior (#9 striker) will have another game to impres.

      (Quote)

  32. That’s a pitty.. I’ve heard he was regared one of the best young prospects in France.. Anyway that means we have better quallity in our reserves or accadamy, or the board is confident of taking Ravel Morrison from MU (also attacking player)

      (Quote)

  33. Newkie- I hear what you’re saying about Simspon but by all accounts this guy would be an upgrade and much better coming forward which would fit with Santon’s style and, I assume, the way Pards wants to play. I also think this might be at least partly due to the Simspon’s contract saga which has gone on for awhile now and seems rather strange to me.

      (Quote)

  34. I think Simpson is getting better and better and I hope he signs a contract but if he’s haggling for too much, he’s gonna get moved on I suppose.
I really hope he signs though and commits because he definitely is improving.

      (Quote)

  35. Whumpie @ 34 – You need to read further back to understand where that comparison came from. It was not plucked out of thin air mate. Chill out! Oh, and Obertan is cack and the stats so far back that up. I’m happy with our squad more or less, but Obertan is a headless chicken.

Think he can a job for us, dont get me wrong, but not as a regular 1st teamer!

      (Quote)

  36. I wouldn’t write Obertan off just yet but I do know that he needs to up his game and gather his confidence together to believe in his own ability.

The lad is still young and if coached right, I think he can do a job for this team , I really do…It all depends on his mindset though and whether he wants to fulfill his potential and not go into a French strop when dropped.

Time will tell on him I suppose but out of all the players we bring in, there will always be one or two that don’t quite fit into the team style and ethic, maybe he is one of those, I don’t really know but the jury is still out on him and at the very least, he needs time to get to grips and that’s something we didn’t afford players a few years ago, so patience is the key before any executions. 😀

      (Quote)

  37. If i rember right wasnt collo also cack in his 1st season, obertan aint really played in 2 year give the lad the time to find his feet.Booing the fella aint helping him the team or the club, fair few idiots we got supporting the club.

      (Quote)

  38. I dont condone booing of any of our players, *** am no idiot. Obertan is clearly not up to scratch and i’m not convinced he ever will be. Moving on…

      (Quote)

  39. Woolfie – Yes I noticed that too. Obviously your twisted humour starting to taint my subconscious!

@50 – Boumsong, Luque, Xisco, Guivarch, Marcelino etc etc all had bad 1st seasons too. They never came good.

You are right though, I should at least button it until halfway through next season and give him a proper chance.

      (Quote)

  40. Obertan has some sort of physcological problem that stops him crossing the ball. He continually threatens to cross (once he’s beaten his man) but then stops and comes inside. This causes huge problems for the strikers as they continue to make the runs but when the crosses dont come the strikers stop making the runs.

HBA is obviously the player for the right at this moment in time.

      (Quote)

  41. When Wigan get relegated anybody think we should take Rodallega or Moses off their hands for a knock down price

      (Quote)

  42. On German text here all day that Sunderland are hoping to sign Cisse from Freiburg for 12 million euros. There are however other Englsih clubs interested apparently.

      (Quote)

  43. Stu – how can you possibly say HBA is the man for the right? He clearly cant use his right foot to cross either.
This constant HBA lovin is pissing me off.
ffs we have hardly seen enough of him to make these kinds of statements, and what we have seen of him, tbh dont impress me much.
Yes he has a touch of magic now and then but thats just not enough for me. Yes he has scored a couple good goals, but until he has scored 10+ in a season, I’ll not understand this infatuation you all have with him.
I’m with Pardew on this one, keep him on the bench until he is seen to be working harder for the team and not just for himself.
Well something like that anyhoo 😕

      (Quote)

  44. i wonder if Obertan because of his pace could be used as a striker instead of on the wing . The guy just seems clueless at crossing for a winger but he has pace to burn and using him as a striker could worry opposing cb’s .

      (Quote)

  45. Toonsy @ 4. I really do think he would be a great signing. He might need to learn when to stay back in this league but that will come with training and Pardew but his ability going forward is second to none. When he gets going he’s so hard to stop.

I know some people will say we won’t pay £7 million for him but Ashley and Llambias will see it as if we get Cissokho, we’ll sell Simpson now for say £2.5 million so really we’re not paying that much for him.

      (Quote)

  46. Beardsleys boots – I said at this moment in time! He’s a better option than Obertan, theres no doubt about that.

Lets not forget that he’s been injured for a year and will still be finding his feet. For this reason i believe that his moments of brilliance are just a glimpse of what we will see soon.

      (Quote)

  47. Perhaps Obertan is still finding his feet then.
Maybe he has potential for the future too?
I think Axel makes a good point above. Just not convinced Pardew is a good enough coach to a) help the lad improve and b) utilise or at least try the lad in a diff role.
For the record, I agree that Obertan is not doing a good enough job on the right wing. Just dont understand everyone saying HBA is obviously better, when he has shown he clearly isn’t. imo

      (Quote)

  48. well lads whats the craic have we signed anyone yet ?

Don’t know much about Cissokho but for the money mentioned I would rather try for Samba but I feel Samba will be going to a top 4 side.

Any word on Cabaye yet ?

      (Quote)

  49. Munich – Interesting that in the grauniad. So he is going to submit to Pardews authority? I think its the only way he is going to get a start in the team. He must be learning that he’s not the be all and end all of everything in Pardews eyes. This can only be a good thing for the team.

      (Quote)

  50. Dave, think Yohan is fine mate, touch and go for Fulham but Pardew said he might not even have a scan, just minor damage, bit of rest and he’ll be fine.

      (Quote)

  51. Dodgy tackle there by Nigel de Jong on Rodallega. Seen one of them before 👿 👿
Kunt deserved a yellow n all

      (Quote)

  52. BB was SAF not a good enough coach to help Gabby ? as for him v’s Benny I tend to think that Benny’s stats of 2 goals in 3 games is better than Gabby’s 0 goals in 16 , I also think when you consider that Benny has been out for a yr and has only really started playing in a different country and league then he must be better equipped than Gabby ?

      (Quote)

  53. If Cabaye doesn’t make Fulham it’ll be interesting to see who he plays alongside Guthrie. If Ben Arfa starts on the right it’ll be toss u between R.Taylor and Gosling.
