Newcastle beat Champions League clubs in pursuit of Cisse

Papiss Demba Cisse
Newcastle saw off competition from a host of top clubs in the race to capture Papiss Demba Cisse last night, according to his agent Andy Evans.

The new number nine seems to be going down a treat already with fans who are looking forward to seeing a striker with an impressive goal return in action at St James’ Park.

However his impressive goal return alerted a whole host of top clubs, some of whom ply their trade in the Champions League, who were looking into the possibility of signing the 26-year-old only to be beaten to chase by plucky Newcastle United.

“There was a lot of interest and a host of top clubs were interested in Papiss, that’s why it was important to get a deal done tonight, huge teams were circling. I’m talking Champions League,” Evans told NUFC fans.

He continued: “Newcastle did an excellent job of completing this deal. They were interested in the summer and made numerous bids for the player, but Freiberg were holding out for their valuation of €15m.”

“The fee was agreed 9pm last night (Monday), Papiss had to come out of training camp and board a private jet set up by Newcastle at 7.10am local time this morning. He arrived here at midday and went through the formalities.”

Not bad going is it? Perhaps NUFC are becoming a dab hand at this transfer malarkey? I mean they’ve managed to bring in an awful lot of quality for reasonable prices and all of them fit into the much talked about transfer policy we have in place. Granted Cisse is at the older end of the spectrum, but at 26 years old he is still in it.

The question is how we’ve managed to beat off competition from Champions League clubs? I mean we don’t pay exorbitant wages and can’t offer European football at this present moment, so what have we pulled out of the bag to secure this deal?

Credit to everyone involved!

  1. To go on along with what every has been saying this morning, if we can keep our best players then I hope we get a game this season with a team of;

    Krul
    Simpson Williamson Coloccini Santon
    Ben Arfa/Marveaux Cabaye Tiote Jonas
    Cissé Ba

  2. Haha as delighted as I am to have won the signature of Cisse I don’t believe a word agents say.

As we all know if we were believing Barton’s agent then QPR “fought off advances from champions league clubs”.

Terrific signing though! Still a bit confused to way the same excitement wasn’t shown to Demba’s signing… $35$? 🙄

  3. As said previously: bouncing, tigger-stylie, about this signing.
Jury still out on the window as a whole – and that’s not necessarily a lack of faith in the club, it’s knowing what other clubs, players, and especially agents are like.

On the up-side, I can’t think of any reason NUFC would spend this much on a striker knowing they were going to cancel out the gain by selling someone else of similar importance. This whole thing to me looks like a club who’ve decided to go for Europe a season early.

    Which is nice. 🙂

  4. The excitement has come from the fact we now believe the club have shown an intent of ambition and moving forward. Strengthening when already in a good position shows this.

Nowt to do with spending X amount of £££ 🙄

  7. Yep, I do wonder, if that agent is anything other than full of it, why he wouldn’t have advised his client to sit and wait for a higher bid from a CL club. The only explanations are:

    1. The agent is indeed full of it, or
    2. Papiss was already dead-set on coming here

I’m going for a bit of both – but it would make sense that Ba could have been a big part of Papiss coming here.

I like Ba more and more.

  8. we are a professionally run club in the ascendancy with excellent supporters, a very good manager and a group of focused players working for a common goal they all understand. that’s the kind of club i would want to go to.

  9. I think and hope Senegal wins the ACN. Imagine the confidence both Cisse and Ba will bring to the team, with that winning mentality. I honestly believe top 6 is within our reach now, providing we don’t sell any players in this window. 😯

  10. EvilFranky – you’re dead right, but Solano’sTrumpet has a point: one of two main reasons for the mass “Meh” when Ba signed compared to this was that he was on a free so was perceived to be an unambitious signing. The other was the injury thing, of course.

I don’t care, frankly. Very excited about The Dembas and Barfa playing together. I hope Pards can engineer that one. 4-4-2 with Barfa on the right?

    ————- Paps- Ba
    Jonas – Cabaye – Tiote – Benny

    Holy ****. That’s one scary line-up!

    Ba-Cisse-Benny

    Looks good too!

  18. Ice – I just hope I get to write about more stuff like this 😀

Think its important that we give him time also. I mean he’s been extensively scouted by us so he is probably suited to the English game anyway, but remember Ba started off slowly and Cisse might be the same.

I remember Ba saying it was hard at the start as he had other stuff to think about like moving and houses and normal stuff that people seem to overlook when it comes to footballers. Cisse has the same thing to ho through although he has Ba to help him obviously, and Tiote. Our own little African clique, along with the French one, English one and Argentinian one. We need to sign another Italian now 😀

  19. To go back to the are we a big club debate form the other week, the players certainly seem to think we are which is all that really matters. It’s beginning to feel like the old days again…

  20. Evil Frankie

That team is looking very very good. In fact, the only place I could see us improving it is with Simpson. Just imagine if we got Pieters 😯

    Krul
    Santon S Taylor Colo Pieters

    Jonas/Guthrie Tiote/Cabaye Ben Arfa/Marvauex

    Cisse Ba

Squad players: Harper, Elliot, Foster, Simpson, Raylor, Williamson, Fergie, Obertan, Gosling, Vuckic, Sammeobi, Best, Sholameobi.

In all honesty, I’d say we are a centre back and a full back away from seriously challenging for a top four spot.

      (Quote)

  21. Toonsy,

I’d include Ba, Cisse, and Tiote in the French clique, they are all French speaking…
So Le Toon now consist of Ba, Cisse, Tiote, Marvauex, Ben Arfa, Obertan, Cabaye, Abied (who I forgot in my previous post).

Then Jonas and Colo speak Spanish, while for Santon, Colo can speak Italian too. But ye, who is a good Italian speaking versitile defender 😆

  23. Well what a coup for the toon. Heard the fee is in the region of 7.5 million and possibly rising to 9 million. A fantastic bit of business to get two proven goalscorers for less than 10 million. Any English striker would have cost an astronomical amount and the board saw sense by looking into other European leagues. Can’t wait to see Cisse in action, the acon gives time for both Ba and Cisse to form a good partnership and understanding. Who knows, this signing might prove crucial when it comes to pushing the Europe, hopefully we can get a centre back in and this window has been a huge success! 😀

  25. Shame about Darlo, but sadly we’re going to see a lot of it. Footie’s about to change at every level, I think. And we’re better set to take advantage of it than just about any club.

  26. Toonsy, forget showing that we can compete against Champions League clubs, more importantly it showing that the board are not all about making money.
If the right player can be bought at the right price the board will back Pardew, but they wont pay over the odds for a player.

I understand people reserving the right to judge until after the window closes, particularly with Carroll being sold on deadline day last year – but today we should celebrate!!
We have a new no. 9 and a CF who can score goals.
This could be another CF pairing for the history books… Cole/Beardsley Shearer/Ferdinand and now Ba/Cisse

  30. Well pleased with this signing. No doubt in my mind we now have a top 6 ‘team’, but we’ve not quite got a top 6 ‘squad’ yet. Another CB and we’re well on our way to building it up over the next season or 2.

A European finish this year would be fantastic, I know my sights maybe set a tad high, but I honestly think we can now compete.

Really hope this show of ambition from the club is a sign of us stepping it up a gear now, and we hold on to what we’ve got.

Song-wise, I think Toonsy nailed it with his ‘come on and do the conga’ chant, but with a few more simple lines added I.E.

Doo Doo Dooo Papiss Demba Cisse
Doo Doo Dooo he’s wa number 9
Doo Doo Dooo Papiss Demba Cisse
Doo Doo Dooo scoring all the time

    or sumink

….I can just picture the new conga-style goal celebration, lead by Papiss, like a train across the floor….. 😆

    Toonsy, how’s the **** this morning? 😯

Also, with Pardew saying “…unfortunately he was out of reach, financially, for us in the summer”, does that mean we’ve now spent up the 9m it needed, or do we have some more for a CB?

    …it’s gona be a long 13 days!

      (Quote)

  34. Rod, I wouldn’t say your being greedy. We NEED a center-half, even someone like Berra who we were linked with before who I wasn’t keen it would be decent for cover.

  35. Rod…depends if you believe this or not

@dannyboyritchie Yes. I reckon the 8m budget is still there: this was the ‘money there for special signing’ signing

  37. Dan, indeed there must be plenty out there capable of filling in our 4th choice spot through a loan deal.

Richie, well if I believed that, then it’d be outstanding news, and in-keeping with the 15m I thought we’d spend this window. I just hope the 2nd bit of my ‘instinct’ holds out too, I.E. no player of any importance leaving.

    Come aaaarrrrrrrrn!!!!!

I bet there are loads of fans from other clubs silently seething with envy right now. I feel well sorry for my Evertonian matewho I was with on Saturday, he’s obviously feeling a bit down-trodden but was happy they signed Gibson. Makes you realise how well off we are really, when you consider Villa and Everton had been on a par with us for so long, then overtook us. It now looks as though we’re ahead.

  41. Mike and Decca promised us a striker if NUFC sold the stadium naming rights. They sold them to Sports Direct for £10m. Kerching ! Papass Cisse.

    Promise kept.

Hope we don’t sign anyone else cos they also said any other players brought in in this window would be replacements for those we sold.

As I said last week we will be actively trying to sell Simpson and Colo if they do not sign new contracts and that they’re replacements will already be targetted.

We will also consider ‘silly’ offers for any other players in this window. If that does happen we might not see them replaced until the Summer.

      (Quote)

  42. Sidekick – quite right .. if Colo doesnt want to sign and accept our offer, then so be it .. we find a replacement

      (Quote)

  43. Sidekick, the naming rights thing makes sense. I can remember “the fans want us to sign a striker” quote from Owl-heed when he was defending the club’s decision to re-name SJP.

(was that quote just regarding the new signage, or does that come with the naming rights? I suppose it would wouldn’t it)

      (Quote)

  44. Rod…but they said they wanted to raise £8-10m from the satdium and shirt sponsorship. Virgin are just sponsoring the shirts which just leaves the stadium. Sports Direct were “showcasing” how it would work, so it would be reasonable to assume they are not paying, just showing how it would work. If thay had decided to sponsor the stadium themselves it would have been announced, I havn’t seen anything so unless I’ve missed it, we are still looking for a stadium sponsor.

      (Quote)

  45. Richietoon;

    No I don’t have a link.

Llambias made the quote hoping to get £10m for the naming rights and being able to buy a striker.

      (Quote)

  46. Sidekick…yeah he said they were looking for one, they havn’t found one, as it stands no one is paying to sponsor the stadium 😉

      (Quote)

  47. Indeed Army, I may even have a flutter on them at 11/2 (they’re 3rd favourites)

…quite fitting actually, now they’re my ‘3rd favourite’ team! 😀

      (Quote)

  48. Richie, hhhmmmm. I guess it’s watch this space time then regarding further transfer activity, although I’m sure there’ll be speculation galore as usual.

      (Quote)

  49. Richietoon ; If SJP is now being called The Sports Direct Arena then Sports Direct should have had to buy the naming rights from NUFC.

Same owner – but different companies.

      (Quote)

  50. Rodz…. he may well have stuck his hand in his own pocket to buy Cisse for all I know, if so well done fella…actually however it was paid for well done to all concerned….but we don’t have stadium sponsorship yet so wasn’t from that and the new Virgin starts next season so wasn’t from that, and the club have already said ages ago they won’t spend cash in one go thats supposed to last a certain period or spend in advance…..anyhoo, I’ll shut up ‘cos I’m sounding like a broken record 😆

Krul, Colo, Willo/Taylor, Tiote, Cabaye, Cisse, Ba …..that’s some spine to a team 😀

      (Quote)

  51. Sidekick..agree, but they said they were only doing it to “showcase” to other companies how it would look and work, they have never said they’d sponsor it themselves…so my interpretation of that is , they aren’t paying just demonstrating it, obviously until the accounts come out no one can be 100% but hey it’s the team on the pitch that matters, and as of this moment it’s looking canny 😉
