Papiss Demba Cisse – Newcastle’s NEW #9

Come in number nine!
Newcastle have signed Senegal international striker Papiss Demba Cisse from Bundesliga outfit SC Freiburg.

The striker has signed a five-and-a-half year deal with the club and will wear the number nine shirt after moving from the German side for an undisclosed fee believed to be in the region of £9 million.

It’s quite a coup for the club in truth. Cisse is one of the most talked about strikers in Europe at the moment thanks to his goalscoring exploits in the Bundesliga and to get him into the club deserves a pat on the back for everyone involved. Not just for showing a bit of ambition, but for the way the deal was done and how fast it was concluded. No other team stood a chance and nobody had a sniff until it was too late.

Moving onto the waffle now, and Cisse insists that he will give his all for the club and understands exactly what the number nine shirt means around these parts thanks to Alan Pardew.

“I would like to thank everybody for their welcome, and for inviting me to sign for the Club,” Cissé told the official club website.

He continued: “It is an honour to play for such a big club and I am looking forward to it. I want to pay back the confidence the Club have shown in me, and give the supporters something to be proud of.

“I am aware of the huge importance of the number nine shirt, and when I spoke with the manager he made it very clear how important this shirt is. I will treat it with the respect and I hope to do my very best in this shirt.”

So we finally have our replacement for Andy Carroll then. Those aren’t my words or my opinion. They are instead the words of Alan Pardew who revealed that Cisse was his first choice to replace the former number nine.

“Ever since Andy Carroll left, Papiss was my first choice in the specific role he has at the end of the play,” he told nufc.co.uk. “He is a finisher with an already-established CV in the Bundesliga, where we have monitored him for the best part of two years.”

“Unfortunately he was out of reach, financially, for us in the summer, but it recently became apparent that Derek Llambias and Lee Charnley could do the deal in this window.”

“It has become obvious this season that the team and the Club have done exceptionally well, and Mike Ashley has backed me to bring this player to the Club. I would like to thank Mike, Derek and everyone involved for getting this deal over the line.”

Cisse is good mates with Demba Ba which bodes well for us and for Demba’s continued stay in Tyneside. Maybe he’ll have second thoughts if a big club comes knocking now? We’ll see, but for now Pardew insists that Ba is happy with the opportunity to link up with his international teammate at club level.

“I spoke to Demba about Papiss, and he cannot wait to join up with his teammate in Newcastle,” said Pardew.

“In the short-term, of course, he is at the African Cup of Nations, but the competition he will bring to our squad when he joins up with us should inspire the players and reassure them of this Club’s ambition.”

“Our fans know that this shirt brings its own pressures. One of the iconic numbers in world football – the number nine of Newcastle. It will be only fair that Papiss is given time to understand the responsibility it brings.”

“As the manager, I wish him all the luck in the world to bring success to himself and this Club.”

Managing Director Derek Llambias added: “We are very pleased to bring Papiss to the Club.”

“It is a signing which perfectly complements the type of side Alan is building, and we are sure he will prove to be an excellent acquisition going forward.”

“He has travelled a long way to come and sign with us today, and we thank the Senegalese Football Federation for their assistance in helping us secure the player.”

Hats off to Pardew, Ashley, Llambias and Charnley. They’ve delivered the goods in the transfer market for once although I’m not getting too carried away just yet as the window is still open and players can still leave.

Still, that’s for another day. For now lets just enjoy this. We don’t often pull off signings like this, but we have and we can enjoy it. Hopefully Cisse will click straight away and hit the kind of goals his figures suggest that he can.

Welcome to NUFC, Papiss Demba Cisee!

  1. I’m with Troy on this one, great signing but only if we keep the players we already have. I’m waiting for a big slap in the chops off Ashley now, though I hope this is the start of a good board/fan relationship.

Feb 1st can’t come quickly enough for me now.

I’m shocked we’ve managed to bring in such a big name, maybe NUFC still have a bit of pulling power after all

  2. I’m with Troy too. Great bit of business and times are looking good – provided we keep our best players. Time will tell, but all the same this signing can only be a positive thing… They could have sold our best players and got fook all in! 🙂

  3. ide just like to say looking at last nights comment the person that seemed most surprised with the signing was toonpipes he never shut fckin up,dus any 1 know how old he is or is he male or FEMALE 😕 reminds me of a woman yap yap yap 😆

  4. @Stardust

At this moment in time they are doing things right in the transfer market.
But you can’t just forget about 5 years of **** ups overnight.

This is what we have been asking for. Good strikers cost money and to progress you have to buy them.

Ba was a fluke but a great buy nonetheless.

All Ashley is doing now is doing what we have been saying he should do.

No credit to the Ashley lovers cos not even them expected this.

Mind, the Tigger brigade are redickerus. 😛

  5. Normally I’m with the optimists, but I agree with Troy about the Tiggers. I was completely wrong over Carroll a year ago, so will celebrate this signing – but not the whole window. Not yet.

As for the “where the money came from” argument I think 3hourswasted has it nailed @56. That links into what Troy is saying about balance: Ashley has shown adaptability by bringing forward the 5-year plan a bit, having recognised an opportunity. We’re doing better than expected for this season, so by taking less back out of the club towards his loan now to pay for Papiss, he increases the club’s chances of a European spot, which will get the loan paid off faster overall.

He’s not daft. And what we now know is – he’s not afraid to adjust course a bit when there’s an opportunity. There should be no surprise – this is a bit of a gamble… and he and Llamearse are hardly strangers to gambling. 😮

  6. I’m with Batty, Troy, Shamrock, and BigDave

I don’t get all this non believers stuff. It seems that all the people who were against trophy signings and saying us ‘non-believers’ just wanted money spent on a big name are actually creaming their pants because we’ve spent money on a trophy signing.

And yet us sensible people who advise caution and not to judge the fat **** until the end of the window are actually deluded, and we have no reason at all to question the motives of our seemingly god like owner.

    Ironic.

  7. it would be nice to get a CB in then get aboot 7 points out of the next 4 games then we would be in a great position for when demba tiote and cisse come back , top 6 🙂

  8. Troy it seems like some of the dreambusers can’t read or they maybe have noticed that almost everyone has gave Jabba and co credit for the signing.
But then that would mean they wouldn’t be able to moan about the ‘negs’ not being happy.
But they can jump up and down and hail Jabba as the best thing ever, but as I said several times lastnight I will wait till the window slams shut before I give a final verdict on Jabba and co.

  9. Batty, totally agree and I bet that’s what Pardew will be drumming into the players in the next few games.

I’d take a point at Fulham then I think even with the players available we will beat Blackburn, Villa at home is a tricky one because they’re better away from home at the minute.

  10. all we ever wanted was ashley to show some ambition and all we got telt was we have to live with in our means.
now ashley shows ambition who are the ones making the most noise 😆 😆

  11. @31…”As long as Ashley changes I’ve always maintained I will forgive.”…….question is, will he forgive you and the rest of the hate brigade? Maybe it’s time some of you realised, he probably doesn’t care what you think or say, and as such your spite and bile is only causing the club harm. Maybe they would have pulled in more money with the renaming of the stadium if it wasn’t seen as a poison chalice by possible investors due to the stupidity of some fans? It was a business decision, we all know it will always be SJP, and money brought in might possibly keep down ticket prices next season……Same when he wanted to sell the club a few years back, we sometimes are the harbingers of our own downfall!…We need to realise when we are well off.

  12. @Northern Paul/ BD,

Our beliefs are based on history. Theirs are based on dreams.

I will continue to base my views on history and they will continue to base theirs on dreams.

We might end up in the same position where Ashley is respected by both parties but there will be only one group that will get credit and that’s us. 😉

  13. Not a problem Troy, you keep worrying about all those things that haven’t happened yet! Did your reliable source not tell you about this deal before hand. Seems strange you didnt know about it!

  14. @BD

ive always said let see what happens before the window closes. Thats why I sat on the fence for most of the time coz I’m still unsure about ashley, time will tell tho for all of us..

Even the haters must acknowledge that we have the best set up for x or so years? Everything we seem to do is well considered – we don’t follow crowds any more – we are leading in a brilliant way to run a club.
I understand some still are cautious but anyone hating right now is just showing themselves up to be fair.

well said m8, especially Troyore, cheer up man, hes a good player 😉

  16. Troy….if we are talking about dreamers…you certainly seem to inhabit a bit of a dream world, where talking utter b*ll*x, is seen as the utterings of a sensible man

  17. Batty, that Chelsea game was a joke, I’ve never been so angry at a game for a long time 😆

When we hit the bar for the third time I just started laughing 😆

  18. Yep…reel them in by pretending that everything you’ve ever said was merely a ploy to get mugs to bite……. Hitler should have tried that trick….I was only joking to see who would bite!

  19. @batty

Troy real them in, jumping bus more like 😉

I’d get off too m8, troyore and his tigger haters will leave u behind

  20. Joesoap you say that maybe Jabba doesn’t care.
We have been saying that for yonks.
As for the re naming maybe if we had all went along with it like lambs to a slaughter yeah he might have sold the name. But some of us believe that he had the re naming kept for SD all along, but im sure you will tell us different.

  21. No reeling in TIGGERS . 😛

    I mean everything I say.

Views based on history and views based on dreams. 😛

Cos your bouncy bouncy bouncy what a wonderful tigger you are. 😛

There’s no credit for the Tigger brigade 😆

  22. You keep basing your views on dreams. Which ever way it turns out you look like foolish…………Isn’t that what being a football fan is all about? If it isn’t then the fans of the other 90odd league clubs may as well start going shopping on a Saturday. I dream we are going to win the treble at the start of every season, If I faced reality every August I wouldn’t bother going!

      (Quote)

  23. No need to answer my last post Troy, your source obviously only knows all the bad stuff that goes on at the club… 😯

      (Quote)

  24. @joe

Will you still bounce round like Tigger if Tiote leaves or even Krul or Colo. 😛

    Woo hoo hoo hooo 😆

      (Quote)

  25. But Troyore

remember when you went bouncy bouncy on Cabaye after 5mins of football.

we all get a little excited at times and jump in too fast 😉

      (Quote)

  26. @Joe

Even Dastardly Derek told us all a player would be sold every season to fund the policy.

So who will it be Tigger?

I’m ready for the bump cos Dastardly Derek told me. Your bump is going to hurt the way you are bouncing round. 😛

      (Quote)

  27. Dave I won’t tell you different because unlike some on here I don’t have an inside line to Ashley and the club. I’m not an Ashley lover…I don’t even know the bloke! But from what I’ve seen he’s merely trying to make money from a business venture and he seems astute enough to realise that if his business is successful he will manage to do this. I do believe he came here with a silly boyhood dream to fulfill in buying a football club, and as such he made some mistakes, but don’t we all. However his dream was very quickly turned into a nightmare by the bedsheet boys……the same ones who now think they were right and Ashley has seen the error of his ways and we’ll all have a group hug and let the silly mug back into the Porcy to buy us all pints!……..Who’s dreaming now?

      (Quote)

  28. imagine not having dreams for your club 😯

I wouldnt like to be in the shoes of Exeter City fans etc

oooh what a gloomy world that would be.. 😉

      (Quote)

  29. Batty yeah he does seem a bit angry 😀
But the thing is we say we will wait till the end of the window to make sure we don’t get rid of any of our star players, because we want the team to built a better team by adding to the best players we have.
But if any go the dreamers have allready made up their minds that if any do go its because they were too greedy, or the deal was too good to turn down.

      (Quote)

  30. @Mark

I based my views of Fabaye on what I saw for the first 3 games. Which was the perfect analysis and I accept your appreciation of my talent. The Tigger brigade were bouncing round as if he was actually Fabragas. 😛

    It’s ridickerus. 😛

      (Quote)

  31. Its sad that some would rather spend their time arguing over when a possible sale might be made at the club and actually seem to look forward to a weakening of the team just to prove themselves right.

I understand caution, but cheer the **** up and enjoy yourself while you can 😉

      (Quote)

  32. I don’t think it would be great if he sold Tiote, Krul, & Colo…but unfortunately that’s what happens in football. If I get to the point where I can’t take it anymore then I’ll stop buying the tickets!….I got to that point when Shepperd and his crony’s were shown to be taking the p*ss out us fans [I know they all do] but he had the ugly face to not even be embarrassed about it. Ashley hasn’t said a word yet he’s constantly accused of lying about one thing or another….so he sacked Keegan & Shearer, does anyone seriously think those two are dreamers? They both took a large wedge of cash from us to compensate if they were!

      (Quote)

  33. @dwayne
    You say ;

  38. According to physioroom icedog Cabaye has a slight ankle injury and could return by the weekend althought there is a slight doubt. Considering the tackle that is good news. I thought QPR played a fairly dirty game. It looked like a number of deliberate attempts to play the man not the ball. I hear Sparky is known for that with his clubs. They didn’t seem to go after Ben Arfa though. I think teams are beginning to drop away from him in fear of being beaten badly. All the better for us if they give him room! 😀
