Fulham 5-2 Newcastle – Highlights (pah!) and interviews

Match highlights, well, if you can call them that, followed by the post match managerial interviews in light of the Fulham game for you now. Watch away, if you can…

Not much I can say about it really. Not good is my view on it, and that is probably a lighter assessment as I don’t really want to swear!

Moving swiftly on, Alan Pardew was left to bemoan his sides second half collapse. Understandably he wasn’t happy, but he should also take a portion of the blame for this on I’m afraid.

Meanwhile Martin Jol was left looking decidedly smug with his sides second half performance. If you do a bit of research of what smug looks like you’ll find that you end up with Marton Jol’s face as the answer. Fair play though as the win drags Fulham away from a relegation battle.

Let’s just move on from this one now…

  1. Jol completely hammered Pardew yesterday. As poor as our players were, Pards must take equal blame too. He failed to react to the tactical change that was ripping us apart.

Just a bad day in the office. I’m sure they will learn from this. Hopefully!

  2. fucking raging watching that again.
    My gawd what a joke.
    Defence? ha ha. Pathetic.
    Total suicide.

2 good goals from Guthrie and HBA, is a plus point.
    Meh 👿 👿 👿

  3. Spot on Shamrock

Jol watched his team get thoroughly outplayed for 40-odd mins and decided to do something about it. He noticed that there was repeatedly a load of space in behind the CBs due to NUFCs high-line. He brought on pacey, shoulder-hanging, CB-spinning Andy Johnson and told his team to play balls over the top for him (and later Dempsey) to run on to.

Due to a strong Fulham tail-wind in the first half, most attempts at using this tactic weren’t effective, passes tending to run away from Johnson into touch. The one time we were caught out, Santon probably should have been sent off for twice hacking the nippy little ****. Danger sign

Now, in the 2nd half that aforementioned strong wind became a head-wind (for them) which served to hold up nicely any through balls played in behind our CBs and the collapse ensued….

In short, Pardew desperately needs to come up with a plan B for when our tendency to play a high-line is being explicitly exploited by an opponent. It’s not the first time it’s happened this season, after all…..

  4. On a side note, it was interesting, but not surprising, that the great unwashed still cant fill their shyte stadium, even tho they now have a decent manager in the seat.
    capacity = 48,000. Attendance = 36,000

  5. Not commented yet on the game, but trying to take the positives. The first half shows haow good we can be when our senagalese geordies link up with HBA. we could have been out of sight by half-time. The second half shows that we still need to sort the defence out. We need pace and strength in there. Looking forward to seeing who comes in.

  13. 3 goals down to Willo yesterday, FFS for 2 of the goals he was 10 yards inside the Fulham half, talk about a freakin high defensive line ! Maybe he was peeved with the forwards and wanted to help them out ! 😆 😆

Gotta come back to Timmy’s kicking. One goal partially down to him yesterday for a gash clearance, 4th I think ? But in general, perhaps he’d be better of passing the balls to the full backs, cos when he bladders the ball long it invariably comes straight back.

Feel that Santone had a pretty poor day defensively yesterday, especially in the second half.

  15. did anyone noticed that in the build up of Benny’s goal, Perch and Shola are involved? Perch evaded Fulham’s challenge and then the final pass before Ben Arfa cutting inside and shoot was Shola’s.

  16. We have loaned Airey out again, i would have kept him and kicked Shola out of the club . Surly one the Africans are back shola will never play for us again with Best on the bench

      (Quote)

  17. Santone was gettin hammered on here yesterday, fair enough on the soft pen and the lack of cover on the 2nd goal, but what about Simpson going missing for the 3rd and 5th goals as well as doing his normal fannying about with the ball which lead to the pen for goal 4?
Until we get a quality right back we will struggle.

  18. I think people are making Shola a scapegoat for the defeat.

Our defence conceded 5 goals not Shola. Even if Shola scored 2 goals yesterday our defence still conceded 5 goals. If Shola was on the bench most of you would find some way of pinning it on him. Pardew was not reactive to anything Jol did.

  19. DAVE 😯 😯

i know santon can play l/b,ive watched him twice and after y/day imo he would be that bit better playing at r/b it would improve the defence but still
need a c/h with a bit more pace imo

  20. On another day, with another ref, Santone could easily have been sent off yesterday. In hindsight, giving the penalty away could have also resulted in a second yellow for him.

Robert…agreed with the Simmo fannying with the ball for the 4th. Was another one of those bizarre goals. Simmo who has more than enough time, is undecided, cuts back on himself, passes to Willo who’s **** caves in, who passes it to Krul, who miskicks…. comedy of errors, when we had the ball well under control ffs. In fact Willo muffed it twice in the same attack, he should be hammered moreso than Simmo perhaps ?

  22. Munich Mag, dont think anyone would argue that Williamson had a mare but Pardew mentions in interview about the lack of cover for the Centre halves, i knew that Santone made mistakes but Simpson was just as culpable, difference is Santone can play a bit.

      (Quote)

  23. Micheal – The reason why the defence looked so poor in the second half was that they got no rest bite at all. As soon as they cleared it came back and that all stems from the front two and their lack of movement. If the midfield have no options then they’ll lose the ball.

      (Quote)

  24. lost count of the amount of times Simmo lost the ball in the opposing half, thus leaving us exposed defensively.

Re: Shola, I would normally agree that he was used as a scapegoat, however yeaterday he was bloody aweful and if you cant see that then you need your eyes testing! If he actually stayed onside occasionally or made himself available for simple passes, the foot would have been on the other shoe and Fulham would not have been attacking us at the other end of the pitch.

Yes, Pardew and pretty much all of the defence had a nightmare too, but Shola did not do himself any good at all yesterday with that performance and there is no hiding from it.

  25. Stuart@37….spot on Shola and Best the Teflon duo…nowt sticks to them……. The ball just keeps coming straight back 🙁

  27. I thought Besd did not do too bad actually. He was out on the left a lot too covering whilst Benny & Guti did their thing through the middle. Not saying he did well exactly, just not that bad. Whereas he was a 5/10 for me, Shola was a 3/10 – only for his late assist (he did **** all else all game).

Krul – 4 – Kicking aweful, mitakes for goals.
Simmo – 4 – Continupisly lost possession in opposing half, mistakes for 2 goals.
Colo – 4 – Bad game, for a leader he failed to communicate effectively and whip his defence into shape.
Willo – 4 – Mistakes for goals, exposed for pace due to bad discipline in the line.
Santon – Again poor timing for offside line, rash tackles. Some good passing early on, but lost the plot and panicked.
Guti – 6 -Some great central play, linking with Benny however when he was out wide he forgot to track back.
Guthrie – 6 – Great goal, some tidy passing, however 2nd haldf tactical change blew his brain and Murphy destroyed him. No bite in the tackle.
Cabaye – 6 – Quiet for large periods. Not the usual fighting for every ball, some stray passes.
Benny – 7 – Nice goal, great forward play in 1st half. 2nd half mainly left in the shadows due to us being under pressure. Showed a willingness to track back but obviously cant tackle.
Best – 5 – Tried to get involved down the left, also tried link up play with Shola but let down by his partner’s lack of mobility.
Shola – 3 – No movement, no reading of play, no making himself available for passes. Assist at end of game only good point. Constantly offside.

Pardew – 5 – Whooped Jol 1st half, 2nd half failed to react to changes and that was a large factor in our game plan going to sh@t, as our players were obviously not expecting their tactics and had no answer for it.

  29. Sharock what are your assesments of the first half?

agree for the second. nobody excelled, nobody lead the troops, no tactics or organisation. lots of lear4ning to be done, and fortunately id didn’t cost anything because other results went our way.

Put Spurs back in their box though.

  31. Prem, exactly. Other results were a blessing for us, particularly the Stoke game for me. Having them within 3 points of us would have put pressure on.

I think yesterday was a one off. Pards will be gutted by this and will work hard to make sure it does not happen again.

Ou 1st half performance was excellent, one of the best we have witnessed this season in my opinion. Some great pressing, passing, probing and runs. The defence looked tidy & organised, idfield was all over it. Shola was static and not loking great, Krul’s kicking not helped by wind but his deciions when playing the ball out were dubious at times. Also Santon made a couple of schoolboy mistakes, but his passing was excellent.

A really good half. That’s what is so shocking about the result and the way in which they folded so tamely. I’m sure they will bounce back and learn from this though.

  32. The commentator and Craig Burley were way over the top banging the drum for video trials for Lescott and Balotelli, they were gutted when he scored the winner, what a shame for ManU.

  34. Normally I would expect Pardew to analyse every facet of that match, have all the stats on every player and put things right in training.
But this ‘week in the sun’ has come at the wrong time for me and I cant see that happening til maybe next week now.
If we wish to progress in the FA cup, then we mustn’t take Brighton lightly, just because they aren’t in the prem.
Our defence needs a good kick up the ****.
Lets just hope senegal get ko’d asap

  36. I can understand everyones reaction to yesterday’s game, but the reality is that it was just one of those freak games that teams have.
As good as we were in the first half, we were as bad in the second.
I think we went in at half time and patted each other on the backs and bigged each other up for a good first half and came out expecting much the same in the second. However Fulham had different ideas and probably bollocked each other at half time.
I agreed that Pardew should have reacted and made changes, but that came completely out the blue and I don’t think he saw anything in the first half that would have made him think that could have happened.
I think his starting 11 was pretty much spot on and the first half performance would support that.
It was just a mad stupid 2nd half. I don’t think its fair to say Pardew has no plan B. He, and the players just got caught out.
Last season was WBA last game of the season.

I know people are calling for HBA to play up front in place of Shola but I honestly think he looked more effect on the right yesterday like.
It’s going to be a long ACoNs for us. Shola just isn’t good enough, I don’t give a **** what anyone has to say in his defence, he’s not good enough!

      (Quote)

  37. Shamrock@38-Spot on there mate .What i can’t understand is how someone as slow as Shola strays offside so often.Like you say his reading of the game is awful poor.
