Is FFP having an effect on the transfer window?

It's oh so quiet. Shhh... Shhh
In my last article I mentioned the fact that we are, so far at least, the biggest spenders of this transfer window.

I also said how surprised that with just one week to go we still hold that accolade, so I thought I’d take a look at it and see just what is going on.

So far in this window a total of £18.4m has been spent by Premier League clubs according to Sky Sports, with the bulk of that figure coming from the transfers of Papiss Demba Cisse to us and Gary Cahill to Chelsea. Beyond that though not a lot of clubs are doing anything which is in stark contract to last January when a total of £215m was spent. It would take some serious investment for this window to equal the last one!

What is causing this though? Do clubs, in general, not have the cash they once had? Are they keeping their powder dry for the latter stages of the window? Are they watching the purse strings in anticipation of these much talked about Financial Fair Play Rules coming into play?

I don’t know. There are clubs who have been told that they must sell before they buy. Tottenham are one of them and they love to do a deal in January. It’s why Sky love Harry Redknapp. Liverpool are very quiet also. Perhaps Dalglish’s boss is less than impressed with the players bought for the best part of £150m? Alex Ferguson insists he is not really looking in January as you can’t get any value, which is odd for a club the size of Manchester United, and Arsenal are just Arsenal.

Pretty much none of the big hitters have done anything yet, but the thing that strikes me is that they don’t look likely to do anything. Rumours are thin on the ground and whilst it’s not a complete picture it’s a marked contrast to previous seasons.

The obvious fact is that these big hitters can just go out and splash the cash at very short notice, or at least they used to be able to, so things could change at very short notice. I don’t envisage the transfer window ending with so little cash spent. Only 18 deals have been completed and eight clubs are still yet to sign anybody. It’s quiet, very quiet.

I just hope it stays that way!

  3. I agree that the FFP is coming into play. The small clubs are holding out for cash that they do not expect to get in the future. Some EPL ones in debt can’t go deeper in the red. No one wants to buy anyone perceived as having too big a contract. No one wants to get stuck with players leaving on a Bosman. Maybe money bags Manc have scarred everyone off trying to buy to catch them. BEcause of this, I don’t see NUFC getting a defender this window. so, put your strategy cap on AP!

  4. I think they’re just keeping their powder dry, if Man Utd don’t win the league, they’ll spend big, Citeh will regardless and Chelski will trying to make up ground. Arsenal will get a new manager and he’ll get cash to spend and Kenny may keep his job but he’s not even trusted to do the butty run at bait time now 😆 …….that said, one snowball this window could start the avalanche 😉

  6. I honestly believe clubs just don’t have the money anymore.

They need to sell to buy and the players they are willing to sell are either not wanted or are too expensive for other clubs to afford…

Liverpool have spent millions on duds and perhaps want to keep funds for what could be a new manager in the summer.

Man United very seldom buy in January. Arsene is on his way out.

Man City have far too many players on their books. They must sell otherwise they’d have players without squad numbers on around 80k per week.

It all bodes well for the Toon, because our clean up and tightness with money over the past three seasons has put us in prime position.

  8. See Alex’s deal to go to QPR has fallen through , wouldn’t mind us trying to get him on loan for the rest of the season .

Who knows which club will buy Colo but I believe someone will. 😯

  10. FFP rules definitely having an effect – even a billionnaire is going to be pretty miffed if his plaything gets chucked out of the CL because they happened to go a smidge – say £200,000,000 – over budget.

We’re in good shape. Sadly, Spuds, **** and Manure are all operating vaguely within revenues, so will continue to be up there. But Citeh, Chelski and QPR will be looking at their obscene, amoral owners and thinking, “oh **** – what are you for, then?”

I don’t believe anyone would offer enough money to tempt Ashley to sell Simmo.

    Do you?

I base every opinion on history and information from various sources.

If I am wrong then my opinions will change but until that window closes, I have no faith in the regime.

Let’s look at the facts. Tiote is one of the best holding midfielders in the league.
Krul is one of the best keepers in the league .
Clubs will be interested in them.
    NUFC is a business.
Ashley will not turn down big money for these players.
    😯

I will be shocked, amazed, stunned if they are not sold.

  18. Toonsy – probably to a degree but if you consider the transfers of Bent, Carroll and Torres made up just short of half of last Jans transfers. Add to that Suarez, Luiz and Dzeko and your talking in the region of £150m for 6 players.
AVB may be due some cash to spend and they are looking at that Willian for around £20m and if Drodga leaves he may spend more.
I think it will still break £100m this year with a week to go

  19. When are we talking troy now or summer?
Of course at some point they could be sold 😀
You just not hedging your bets? 😉

  23. 😎 True, most of the 200 odd million spent last january was spent in the last day if not the day before. Don’t worry though lads we’ll keep the window alive when ashley gives pardew 50m to spend. G. Carr’s head would explode with what he could do with that.

  25. No one will buy Guthrie, because he will run down his contract and leave for nowt in the summer, picking up a muckle pay day into the bargain. Ditto Simpson …

Don’t think any of our big-hitters will leave this January, but things may happen in the summer.
