Vertonghen set for summer move?

Could this Ajax man be the answer?
Long term Newcastle United target Jan Vertonghen could be sold in the summer, according to his manager Frank de Boer.

With Newcastle reportedly chasing a high quality central defender in the summer, and with Vertonghen near the top of the list, could the Belgian international be set for a summer move to St James’ Park?

It all depends on his contract situation. While de Boer admits that he would like to keep that player at Ajax, he also concedes that he could be forced to lose his star defender should the two parties fail to agree a deal rather than risk losing him on a free transfer or a pre-contract agreement for the summer of 2013.

“We know that his contract expires in 2013, so it’s either renew or relocate to a good foreign club, where Ajax would also benefit from a transfer fee,” de Boer told Eredivisie Live – the official website of the Dutch League.

“We already told Jan last year in Turkey that we are keen to hold on to him. We will open talks early in March to discuss a new deal.”

Vertonghen is a versatile player who can play at left-back or in the defensive midfield position when needed although he is primarily a centre-back. At 24 he fits into our transfer policy and he would be available for less than the £10m Ajax wanted for him not so long back.

Sounds a bit like Erik Pieters doesn’t it?

After the signing of Papiss Demba Cisse our need for attacking options has subsided somewhat. Of course he is away at the ACoN at the moment, but it’s only for a few more weeks potentially and then we’ll have both him and Ba in attack.

That means that we can shift our focus to the defence, which the club seems to be doing with the reported interest in Adrian Mariappa. Someone like a Vertonghen or Pieters would be several streets, or maybe even a whole A-Z, better than Mariappa so is it worth waiting until the summer or do we bring some backup in now in event of an injury to either Fabricio Coloccini or Mike Williamson?

Of course the other option is to bring in a top centre-back now, but I honestly can’t see that happening at this stage in the transfer window although I’m prepared to be pleasantly surprised. I just think that we’re getting to the point now where if a club wants a top player from another club they’ll have to pay well over the odds, and NUFC won’t do that.

So Vertonghen in the summer? Perhaps. I’ve no doubt that the club are on top of things in the transfer market as, and I really can’t believe I’m going to say this, they’ve earned my trust in the transfer market. Whoever we bring in stands a good chance of succeeding so I’m just going to sit back and wait and see what happens.

Howay the lads!

  1. I see the Chronicle reporting we’re already in discussions to bring Zaha here in this window.

Now that really would be someone coup to go along with Cissé.

  2. I still think we need a CB in this window, even on loan. As it stands, an injury to Collo or Williamson and we are back to James Perch. Do we want that happening in the quarter final of the FA cup or the last 8 games, which don’t look easy?

  3. …as DJG says, we need someone in now though. We’re fkd if Colo or Williamson get injured, and both of them missing would be horrendous. A loan deal would be OK until the end of the season.

    We need cover now.

  4. I said last week we should try and get a decent loan in untill the summer when Saylor is back and we’re in a stronger position to broker a deal.

  5. Short term Douglas Teixeira is out of contract in Summer so must be able to afford now. Long term a more cultured CB, such as Vertonghen or Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa from Montpellior in the summer would be great. We then have 5 good CBs cover if Collo left.

Following on from earlier article should we play Raylor at RB instead of Collo to provide the chances for the Dembas, or do we buy a dedicated LB eg M’Bengue or Pieters in the summer and switch Santon to th right, or do we wait for Fergi & Tav to come good???

  12. Reports in France claim Newcastle are taking a keen interest in St Etienne’s Faouzi Ghoulam. The 20-year-old is also followed by QPR, Roma and Napoli.

Sky. Left back who can play in the middle. Worth about £1.5m. Probably a non story but thought i’d mention it seeing as it is there..

  13. Would love Verthongen in now instead of in the summer. He has a bit of swagger about him. Kinda like a sturdier Colo with a hammer of a strike!

  14. That’s what I thougt Prem, but then papers are going to link loads of names to us knowing we are actively looking… Pinch of salt and all that but would not be suprised. He is a regular starter for them. Never know, might get someone in like him now, then a more established player in the summer. Even if we sign 1 center half this Jan, that only leaves us with 4.

Kadar is obviously not fancied and the young lads wont be ready by next season, so ideally we need 5 if we want to avoid a repeat of our defensive crisis before christmas. – Obviously both Willo and Taylor have histories of ling term injuries. Both likely to miss stints next season.

  17. There’s nothing in this story to suggest that Vertonghen will move to NUFC. All we know is that he’s for sale. I’m sure he’ll have many suitors

As for Zaha, he’ll be overpriced. A better option would be to move for Hoilett – proven in the Premier League and out of contract in the summer

  18. From Germandictionary.eu: ‘Vertonghen, a medieval device used by law enforcement officers to torture people accused of various crimes punishable by death. Curiously, it was also used by those wishing to engage in Sexual Sadism, albeit it to less extremes. It has come back into fashion in recent times and a recent drawing of a male from the UK midlands demostrating the device has been published: http://www.medievality.com/judas-craddle.html

  19. Well of all the defenders we are being linked with Vertonghen is by far the best . The lad is good enough to play for any top team in Europe and would cost more to get than our last buy . I think Pieters is more our price range but although he has started training again i have my doubts he would pass a medical , i read a couple of days ago that it will be another couple of weeks before he is considered for a comeback .

  22. Haha I dont know, no wonder their strikers are going limp on the pitch these days if they are engaged in all this **** off field play! I do look at Dogleidh sometimes and think he is a ***** looking fellow though. Maybe he makes it a training neccessity for his lads, you know, like taking certain players to Boyzone concerts. … 😯

  25. sorry lads a bit off topic, but does anyone know how much the tickets for the mackems will be for 16 year olds? trying to get a few for a mate but the website is doing my bonce in 🙁

  26. Looks like onuoha is getting somewhere round £50k a week, QPRs desperation to get players through the door will bite them on the **** if they are relegated with players on silly money and long contracts…
