Down and out! Brighton 1-0 Newcastle

Buckley does the damage for Brighton
Newcastle were sent tumbling out of the FA Cup by Brighton this evening at the AMEX Stadium.

There can be no excuse for a performance like that. Quite frankly we were awful and the whole team, from manager down to each player, must take a portion of the blame.

I’m honestly trying really hard to think of a player to give some grudging credit to and I’m really struggling. The only candidate I can think of is probably James Perch which says a lot. Too many poor individual performances and a lack of effort and intent done for us in the end. We weren’t good enough to win and that pretty much sums it all up.

Newcastle made just one change from the side that lost resoundingly at Fulham last week, and it was enforced change with Fabricio Coloccini sitting out the match after picking up a groin strain in training. James Perch deputised and didn’t actually do a lot wrong. He was probably our best outfield player, but I’ll be glad when Colo is back against Blackburn hopefully.

I’d like to go into detail regarding the match but the simple fact is that there wasn’t a great deal to talk about. Certainly not in the first-half anyway. The highlight was probably an attempt from Leon Best who cleverly trapped the ball from a Yohan Cabaye pass before firing just past the post.

The second half had a bit more bite to it though as the tackles started to fly in. Yohan Cabaye may well be crossing his fingers and hoping that the FA don’t investigate his wandering foot which ended up in the face of a Brighton defender.

Newcastle had a lot of possession but they just didn’t do a lot with it. There are a number of reasons for this in my view. One being Jonas Gutierrez wandering all over the place and doing not a lot. The same can be said of Hatem Ben Arfa while Shola Ameobi and Leon Best offered virtually nothing up front and at times looked like they had barely even seen other.

The winner came on 76 minutes courtesy of another player who had a stinker – Danny Simpson. Well the goal wasn’t scored by him so I lied, but his weak attempt at trying to dispossess Will Buckley on the halfway line allowed the Brighton man a free run towards goal. Buckley jinked an twisted his way into the penalty area before shooting at goal and seeing his shot fortunately deflected off Mike Williamson over Tim Krul and into the back of the net.

Some have credited it as an own goal against Mike Williamson but I’m not so sure. I’m really to angry to give a toss about it in truth. The nuts of it that it hit the back of the net regardless of who is credited with it.

What followed the goal is what annoyed me the most. The sheer lack of urgency and fight on display from the lads representing NUFC was disrespectful to say the least. At times we were playing at walking pace which is just not cricket when your chasing a game.

Newcastle did have half-hearted appeals for a penalty waved away after a shot from Yohan Cabaye struck the arm of a blocking Brighton defender. I’ve seen them given but my instant reaction was that it would have been a harsh decision. I certainly wouldn’t be happy if it was awarded against Newcastle, and being honest if we’re going to start looking at the penalty and bemoaning it then there is something wrong.

We weren’t good enough. End of!

  1. Gary @ 74 yeah mate they do deserve credit, and I think they’re capable of playing a lot better than today 😉 so good luck to them. Mackail-Smith looked canny

  2. Alreet wilf , it’s me 😀

    How’s the form ?

******* today , we have 5 first teamers missing and BADLY miss them

Not using that as excuse, today we were terrible

  3. So Wolfie I hope you stick to your part of the deal if he doesn’t spend the £25 mill. 😉 you have to admit that Jabba is a ****** and your only allowed to post in 2 sentences

  4. I expressed my disappointment on the last article, we were dog **** today like.

I also said that I don’t believe Ashley will spend another penny in this window. I honestly believe that. They may work on pre contracts and loan deals but forget money being spent. Skinny Mike was there today, watched that **** with his own eyes… days after bankrolling a trip to Tenerife following a **** display against Fulham. He is going to be pissed off with the way the players are performing at the mo. In his eyes there’s nowt left to play for this season as he sees Europe as an expensive fixture demanding tournament.

I’d be as happy to see certain players leave our club at the moment as I would seeing new players come in. Too many overpaid and under performing for me like.

  6. I’d like to see some stats on own goals. I swear we must be almost unmatched in terms of how many we’ve put into our own net via deflections…

  7. Why was Shola Captain ?
Apparently, he used to go on holiday there as a bairn
He has happy memories of running about a little bit
    then having a lie down.
    Some things never change.

    PS while the fans moan
    A question must be asked
was there a reason for them to be so quiet ?

Out Sung by the ShiteHawks!!!!!! a bad evening all round

  10. Haven’t read all the comments above yet.
Suffice to say we were utter gash tonight.
I’m becoming more and more convinced that Pardew has lost the plot.
He is clearly out of his depth (IMHO)
The honeymoon is well and truly over and he has run out of ideas.
Now I am seriously worried for the remainder of the season.
If ever there was proof that we need quality cb cover and a decent right fullback it was tonight.
Going by previous windows, we will make all kinds of bullshit noises, but ultimately sign no one.
The lads have lost there unity and become a team of individuals who cant play together.
What was the fecking point of the trip away in the sunshine ❓
Hope to have at least one demba for wednesday or I can see another humping coming on.
Sorry to be negative, but things dont look so rosy after the last couple matches. 👿 👿

  11. What pisses me off is the fact that assuming we still have Ba & cisse and Tiote this time next year we can expect this again, as there will be another ACON next year.

  12. is there another acon next year??

i think we will get someone in if its a defender (mariappa , samba ) or a midfielder ( zaha) but god only knows !! im just hoping we beefin up the squad and desperatly need someone to partner colo

  15. Leon Best has had a good oportunity to make his mark as a striker in the first team and failed comprehensibly. Utter garbage for this level of football,
    Same goes for shola.
Playing the two together is epic fail, time and again.
We need a clearout of tripe this summer because this team aint top 10 material. No way.
Guthrie n Cabaye just doesn’t work either. Creating very little threat between them.
Everyone is hanging on a moment of sparkle from HBA, who is NOT a right winger.
So many things wrong it beggars belief.

  16. off topic ,i have recently changed my consultant from wansbeck hospital to another consultant at the rvi and what a difference , the care you get at the rvi is absolutely fantastic !! im from ashington so wansbeck hosp is just up the road but would much rather travel on the bus for an hour to get the care you get at the rvi! wansbeck needs closed down 😆

  17. Toonitis – Its Pardews master plan 👿
to be fair to Best, I’m sure he is only doing what he is told to.
Same goes for Jonas. Except he doesn’t seem to know what he is meant to be doing.
The whole midfield is pish poor at the mo,

  18. I’ll be shocked if we have Demba Ba this September. Someone pointed out earlier, he is using the same word games that Enrique used before and some of our other “contract rebels” are using. They don’t talk about the question, they talk about seeing the season out, etc.

Unless we can someone freak a Champions League spot, Ba is away no matter what I think.

  19. It all went tits up when Saylor got crocked. When our defence was solid the whole team was secure and free to play .Now we look nervous and no one looks like they wanna pass with any fluidity ,we also playing a very high line which is fine if your back 4 are **** hot and fast, alas ours is not and opposing teams are getting in behind us too easily .

  20. out of the team we played today who i would have in my ideal starting 11 would be
    krul
    santon
    jonas
    cabaye
    ben arfa

the rest arent good enough imo

    shola – terrible
best – 4 goals?? not good enough
guthrie – ok on the bench
    perch – championship player
    willo – championship player
    simpson – too many mistakes

  21. FunkyJesus-Yeah that, or he has a ***** second half of the season and people cool their interest or his knees explode. Either way, nowt good for us 😕 I’ll take 40 mil from Real Madrid though, maybe they can throw Benzema in and he can join his fellow frenchies. 😉

  22. I’m off to read me paper and watch Alien on film 4 for the millionth time 😆 Nighty -nite lads & lasses.

  23. Kim – that’s a stinker of a week but I count 3 things there so hopefully your luck is due to change.

I agree with above, were some way off our best 11 at present, which for me would be:

    Krul
    Raylor/Saylor/Colo/Santon
    HBA/ Cabaye/Tiote/Marveaux
    Cisse/Ba

I’d drop Jonas as he just hasn’t done it this season for me like, even with Santon behind him as a proper LB

      (Quote)

  24. would not play hba on the wing but a free role behind the front two got to have a clear out in the summer regardless of were we finish shola best lover williamson perch simson all need to go nnot good enough imo 🙄

      (Quote)

  25. Jonas has been very good this season but he was very poor today, but its hardly surprising as I don’t think he knew wtf he was supposed to be doing. Pards had obviously told him to roam and find space, help where he wanted and the like but he just sort of ended up along with Cabaye and Guthrie who also seemed fairly confused as to where they were supposed to be passing. Best on the left got not supply, Arfa was too high up on the right and didn’t track back enough/didn’t recieve the ball to actually do much. Shola isolated up front recieving the long ball but with limited support and therefore inneffective.

Back to 4-4-2 for me, Jonas on the left to help the defence, Barfa on the right to try and create.

    benny/obertan……..tiote……..cabaye………jonas/marveaux

    ………………..ba………cisse……………..

    night night shola

  27. Agree Newkie 😆

With the players available to us now, 442 is the only option. It’s either that or 4411 With Best up top, where he plays best, and Benny behind him where he isn’t expected to track back too much.
Play Obertan and Jonas on the wings.

      (Quote)

  28. Quite right Army

If Ba is injured, play Best, if Cisse is injured, play Benny up top and Gabby on the wing. And keep Shola on the bench.
I think Simpson just needs a wake up call by being dropped too.

      (Quote)

  29. I’m not Shola / Besty bashing but how many times did they position themselves for runs into their penalty area? How many times were they far enough forward to be caught out repeatedly by their offside trap? They were curiously everywhere but where they were supposed to be. Hence Jonas and HBA were virtually made redundant with no-one to connect with, running around aimlessly searching for non-existent openings. And HBA can do all the tracking back you like but its not his game. add to that Simpson insists on being a taxi ride up the wing for no apparent effect, leaving us with virtually a back three all game. Even so we were still good enough playing badly for a draw nut they nick one in. Tough chunks and on to Blackbum. 🙁

      (Quote)

  30. Pardew has lost the plot…What was the point of them 3 subs???? He blames anyone / anything but himself..Besty on the left???? replaced Ben Arfa ???? when he should have pushed him forward. This was Brighton we were playing…We have a bloody good squad here..With 4 to 5 to come back. and he still cannot get the basics right.

      (Quote)

  31. I cannot believe this result. Football is a results orientated sport. We lost today, end of story. Man what a disappointment. Gash

  33. JJ 😀
Yeah well hey the sooner Shola’s back on the bench the better, I think we can all agree that having the others back will be great. I’m still not sold on Arfa playing behind the striker…I think it leaves the one striker we do have with no space, he’ll get marked out the game, whilst the midfield can all try and hassle barfa out before he gets a straight run at the defence. I think he may also be a bit too selfish to actually constantly supply through balls for another striker but I guess we’ll see.

Would prefer him to start up top with Best, Shola and Best are just too similar really.
