David Sullivan – Does he really know the details of Ba’s NUFC deal?

Sullivan talks about Ba
What is it with people in London? A place where it’s easy to get consumed with everything around you, yet there are a few who seem to be overly concerned with a football club that is some 280 miles away.

First off we had Harry Redknapp gushing details of an alleged clause in the contract of Demba Ba to all and sundry, and now we have West Ham United co-owner doing much the same with regard to his former player.

Redknapp was quoted as saying that Ba has a release clause in his contract allowing him to walk away from Newcastle for a sum of £7m. David Sullivan has reiterated that figure and divulged a bit more information by suggesting that Ba himself could be entitled 50% of any transfer fee over £7m.

The West Ham supremo spoke candidly to Hammers fansite ‘West Ham Till I Die’ where he went through a serious of figures regarding the deal between Ba and West Ham. As a Newcastle fan I don’t really care about that, but when it comes to NUFC, which I do care about, Sullivan said:

“I’m told he’s got a £7 million get-out at Newcastle and he gets half the money over that. They keep denying it but I think you’ll see in the summer – He will leave Newcastle or he’ll get a monstrous rise to stay there.”

“If they get about four million, half will go to him, so if they sell him for £7 million they’ll only net about three because they paid his agent £2 million to get him out of here. Getting £3 million is not bad, but for a player of his quality it’s not fantastic.”

Well that last line is stating the obvious isn’t it?

On a serious note, to me it read as though Ba will get 50% of anything OVER £7m although I could be wrong on that one of course.

Does the Porn Baron really know the details though? I mean he is going to know about the happening at his end of things, but is he really privvy to the nuts and bolts of any deal between Ba and NUFC? I seriously can’t see why he would be.

I have little doubt that Ba does indeed have a release clause. In this instance the silence from the club has been deafening which is odd when you consider how quickly they like to come out and deny things. On the clause though, not a word, which to me indicates that there is one.

The only way this kind of chatter will get sorted is in the summer as we’ll know one way or another exactly what is going on. Will Newcastle give Ba another contract with terms not as “flexible” as they are now? Or will Ba exploit the clause in his contract and head for pastures new?

I very much doubt that Mike Ashley would be prepared to lose out by selling Ba on the cheap, and £7m would be on the cheap, but on the other hand logic sometimes goes out of the window with this regime so I guess the rumours and murmurs from other clubs will continue.

I just wish they would poke their nose out of our business!

  2. maybe ba has clause in his contract,in case we got relegated or he couldnt settle here,no one knows, but he seems settled, here and i just don’t think he would get his mate to sign, if he was off

  3. Jay…..good mate, cheers again for that ticket voucher owa Xmas, but next time give me one for a match we actually win 😉
Dave…another dozen or so to look at this week, then I think we’ll start chucking the offers in  …….got about 3 on the “possibles” shortlist.

  4. I’d be amazed if Ba, Cabaye, Tiote, Collicini, Krul & maybe even Cisse were here next season… 🙄

Do we really have to go through this endless misery loop? Dull as fook…

  5. Hang on, Hang on – release clause of 7m still must have certain restrictions – for instance the player may not want to be bought. Why? Well, how much would you value him at, considering he is one of the top strikers in the prem at the minute? 10m, 15m? How much has he cost us? 2m in agents bungs? So, if the bids start at 7m, he would still be a cheap buy if we decided to give him and his agent 7-10m, plus we would be in the driving seat as we know what wage he’s on now, what incentives he is getting and of course we are already insuring him so we don’t have to factor that in like other potential buyers do. The big question is, despite all this vigorous stirring, why di nobody even make an enquiry in January? Surely the Chelsks and Arsenals of this world were well aware of their stuttering rubbishness and could have used a 7m goalmouth lion for the rest of this season, couldn’t they? I think it will be a strange and highly ridiculous bit of speculation by a desperate and rich team to prise him away this summer. Cue Liverpool.

  7. Hammer – thanks for the sentiments, I actually agree that we are similar in many ways especially our underacheiving ones 😆 It mad me sad when you went down a few years back I thought it was wrong for the team that gave us the likes of the great Bobby M and who played legendarily pretty footy should be subject to the ignominity of the drop. Especially as we did it too! Having said that, Sullivan is not constructing anything with what he’s saying and it’s purely mischief, probably as sour grapes to the player himself. there’s no benefit i it at all and it is in the end just useless gossip at best.

  8. tsunki – the rumour in january was that it didn’t come into effect until the summer. ACoN made it more awkward but still wouldve been doable if someone really wanted to get it done

  9. Unfortunately I’m sure what Sullivan has said is true … but I think that he and Harry Redknapp have shown the world just how shady they are.

I think Sullivan is just a really bad case of sour grapes. He’s gutted that his F up has been our gain this season.
I think our pursuit of Tomkins in Jan probably fuelled the fire a bit, as I think our board went in with a low offer to try and unsettle the player and get him to hand in a transfer request which backfire as Tomkins signed a new contract.

I expected Ba to leave in the summer anyway after all the speculation in Jan but if he does stand to get half his transfer fee I think he’ll defo leave. To be fair who can blame him, he’s simply taking advantage of stupid business men

  10. Sharpy – good point about the Tomkins pursuit – if you remember the kerfuffle the Watford chairman made after Ash’s boys went in for their lad it seemed they were well rattled by the swagger and of the Sports Direct negotiators. They probably didn’t appreciate being approached like they were sports sock wholesalers, being given the ol’ market haggle ‘n all. Sullivan’s still sore about them coming in and trying to mug him for his new talent so soon after prising Ba off him, when they are trying to get back into the Prem.

  22. Somebody may have said this already but . . .
Why is it impossible for someone like Harry or Sullivan to find out about Ba’s release clause?

We found out about Cabaye’s, didn’t we?

  23. Well, I sympathise with everyone who wants the chattering classes in London to shut their gob, but that’s not going to happen. 😉 But after being angry about this, I thought it over and now don’t care. KEITHR was on the right track. Ba may not be worth much more than 7 million. He’s had a good spell at West Ham and an even better one here, but how long will his knee last? (And, by the by, Sullivan’s talk about NUFC making “only” 2 million on Ba is laughable – he took a loss on the lad! 😆 )

Let’s reflect on the drama over Carroll’s departure: we were promised a replacement, got Ba as a stop-gap (and what a stop-gap!) and then received Cisse as a proper #9. If Ba goes, I am reasonably confident that Carr will turn up quality options and that Ashley will buy – when the price is right.

  25. Aye I just read that Toonsy. What utter *****! What about Pardew’s tactics in the 3-0 victory over Manure or our win over Stoke?

Pardew and the players have been talking about taking each game as it comes all season. Not gonna get that 4 mins of my life back after reading that 🙁

      (Quote)

  26. Toonsy, that articles daft! (not yours 😆 )

People moan about Pards’ tactics all the time and I’m sick of it. If we are to platy different tactics we need squad depth.

I think it’s just the people that hate it when ben arfa’s not played 😆

      (Quote)

  27. Yeah I read it and thought it was a wind-up.

Also regarding the whole Pardew playing negative football debate, I don’t think this is the case at all, he is just using what is available. Our wide areas are not the strongest, it is the ‘spine’ of the team where we are strong. Perhaps a lesser manager would actually be more gung-ho and leave our wide areas vunerable to attack.

I see the Wolves game as being pivotal. It’s never an easy game when you come up against a team that are fighting for their lives, add to that trying to impress the next manager. Our players have had their two week rest now so there should be no excuse of ‘burn out’ anymore.

  28. Who is this ‘thelinesman’? 👿 Thanks Toonsy for the link that article. Riled me up.

That’s not giving AP enough credit. AP has had a number of games where tactical changes yielded results.

A ****-up against Fulham (everyone *****-up once in a while, this season the ‘top teams’ more than usual – **** & the Bin dippers to name a few) and a right hiding by this seasons outside-contender for the Crown (who played an incredible game) – Is that enough to condemn AP? WTF mate?

We’ve had some mistakes but we’re not in 6th for no reason! HWTL! 😉

  29. You would never get Mike Ashley sack a manager who was popular with fans and players who brought the club back from the depths of despair to regaining their pride.

    Just ask Hughton. 😯

  32. So Warnock was scacked and is now at leeds where Grayson was sacked. Clarkie sacked at Huddersfield. Is see it’s sacking season again. 🙄

And some grubby **** toe rag is saying we should sack another manger, 2nd season into the prem and 1 point from 4th. 😐

      (Quote)

  33. @DJG

Pardew should have the safest job in the premier at the moment but who knows with Jabba.

He’s done it with Hughton and if we qualified for Europe, who knows? Jabba could drop him like Les Kellet dropped Kendo Nagasaki in 1969. 😆
