Newcastle 2-2 Wolves – Match highlights

Match highlights of the 2-2 draw with Wolves yesterday for you all to ponder now. Just ignore the foreign language commentary if you can!

At 2-0 up you have to go on and win the game. We didn’t, and I must confess that when I saw that we went two goals up so early in the game and failed to add to it before half time I had a horrible feeling that it would come back to haunt us. I’ve always hated two goal leads…

Match report coming up soon!

  1. ****… Didn’t see the whole game but looked like we played well and were very unlucky. Defence needs a bit of work but what a goal from Jonas! Beautiful strike!

  2. I have a feeling alot of negative comments and finger pointing will be done today, so ill try and get in early.
I think part of the problem is that too many people decided yesterday was an easy 3 points in the bag and didn’t give enough respect to Wolves.
Don’t get me wrong, at 2-0 up we should have put that game to bed in the first half, but in fairness Wolves also had their chances in the first half and took heart from that and kicked on, fair play to them, this wasn’t a smash and grab point for them.
A big difference yesterday is that they brought 2 players on who had a positive impact on there team. We brought 2 players on who didn’t really change things for us much at all … and that’s not me blaming Guthrie or Benny for the defeat but Guthrie did very little and Benny was positive in the sense that he had acouple of good shots but lost possession.
Cisse and Ba looked good together up front and Jonas proved he’s right footed.
It’s only my opinion but Williamson and Simpson just aren’t good enough and for me, forget French midfielders, RB and CB should be our main areas for improvement.
After that, if he wanted a new LM I’d take Jarvis all day long.
Yesterday was never going to be as easy as most predicted but a point keeps Liverpool at bay and hopefully will give us a kick up the **** for next week.

  3. Sharpy I totally agree with you and I said yesterday morning that it wasn’t 3pts in the bag, and that it would be a hard fought game.
But after going 2-0 up we simply switched of and there is no excuse for that, the player’s have to again shoulder the blame.
As for Guthrie and Benny theteam had already threw the 3pts away before they came on, Guthrie wasn’t very good but git that have owt to do with the fact that he was rightly pissed of that he had been benched after playing well ?
Benny might have lost the ball a few times but he looked like the only player trying to win the game.
IMO willo is getting worse as is simmo.
I think after that game that its only to be expected that people will be negative, if you don’t feel bad after that game you must be as passionless as most of the players were.

  4. Agreed. God knows what Simmo is playing at with his contract talks, he’s lucky Pards wants to negotiate a new contract with him at all.

We NEED a dedicated LB so Santon can go to the right and we can do away with Simmo. We also need Saylor back and a new CB that will compete with Willo for 1st team football.

  5. Toonsy what were your ‘expectations’ against one of the bottom teams, with there best player missing, at home, with almost all our squad fit??

  6. well we had won 4 in a row at home before yesterdays game so i thought it was a dodgey game ,every 1 will forget about it when we beat 5under1and next week

  7. Dave – I agree the 3pts were thrown away by the time Guthrie and Benny came on and I can understand what youre saying about Guthrie but if that was the case then that’s wrong for me like, it’s a team game and if you’ve been benched then you just have to take it on the chin, then when you get on show the gaffer he was wrong to bench ya and push for a start next week, not spit ya dummy. I’m not blaming Guthrie, just addressing ya point.
I agree about Benny, at least he was trying but I wish he would lift his head when he has the ball.
Passing to someone in a better position, or playing a one two with someone keeps possession. There was one occasion yesterday where he was out wide near the byline, there was no pass on for him so he tried to beat the defender with a trick that didn’t work and he lost the ball and didn’t try to win it back.. he’d not been on long and should be running all over to get it back. But really what he should have done it play it off the defender and win a corner.
Again, not blaming Benny but it’s silly little things like that that really frustrates me about him.
I thought Jarvis was good for them yesterday but don’t know if that’s because Simpson made him look good?!
Ba and Cisse look like they could score for fun but we have to start creating more chances for them.

  8. We gave him two very sloppy goals but we frustrated me the most is, even though Santon had one of his best games defensively and going forward we know what the left-hand side can do and yet we still time and time again used that wing to attack.

I know Simpsons not the best but like Dave said at least Benny was taking people on and causing trouble but yet we still give to Jonas for him to try and do something.

  9. B1G Steve – I expected the game not to be as easy as some fans thought it would be. I read predictions of 6-1, 5–0, 4-0 etc etc….. And people wonder why we get called deluded 🙄

Bottom line is that you’re applying logic to football. Player x is better than player y and z. End of the day each game is a separate entity with thousands of variables. Personally I though scrappy win, but I knew it wouldn’t be easy.

  10. Batts if we play the sameway as we have the last 2 games the Mackems will punish us 👿 .
Sharpy yeah if thats what happened to Guthrie it shouldn’t happen, but then Pards did say that when you get the shirt its yours till you lose it, imo he didn’t lose it but Cabaye took it off him.

  11. I have never been as animated during a game as I was yesterday, it was 90. mins of total ****.
Even at two up, I was F/ing and Blinding .
We only pass to a player that is marked by the other team, don’t they know how to find some space ❓ .
All so they pass it sideways / sideways / back / sideways / back to the Keeper then Hoof Ball, if they try to pass it forward, it goes to the other team.
    Roll on next week 😉

  12. Big steve I expected us to win after a hard fought game, but As Toonsy said there was people on here yesterday thinking we were going to hammer them .

  13. B1G Steve – I rarely expect us to win mate. It’s why I never get too disappointed when we lose. Call it a defence mechanism if you like 😉

  14. They’re all hard games man. We’re a mid-table quality side who have sneaked a load of results in games we’ve been 2nd best in through hard-work, clinical African finishing and a generous slice of luck. How many times this season have u felt that we’ve dominated or even controlled the majority of a game? Blackburn (h)? manU (h)? Swansea (h)?, maybe Villa (a)?

If we can somehow finish 6th it would be an awesome achievement and would set us up to improve/upgrade/rework the squad in the summer

  15. It was still 2-1 when Guthrie & Ben Afra came on & we conceded immediately. Not that they are to blame but the timing wasn’t the best…I’m sure there’s a saying about making subs when you’re defending a set piece!

That said I was pretty drunk so all of what I’ve just said could be complete bullshit!

  16. The worrying fact is, and Troy touched on it yesterday, is that we do not actually play football as such. The majority of the teams we play against tend to outplay us soccer wise, whereas thank goodness we have Demba Ba who so far this season has managed to score goals from nothing. It only goes to show why goalscorers are inevitably worth so much more in the transfer market. As usual yesterday, our ability to retain the ball within the team was quite abysmal, and our passing at times really second rate. That was probably why we were highlighted at the beginning of the season as a team who was covering so many miles. Cos we had to get the ball back !

As frustrating as it is, we should still be really pleased with the achievements so far. At the end of the day, we have several key foreign players in our team who are still finding there feet in the EPL. Hopefully they will be even better next season. I also hope that Pardew has the nads to handle the pressure once the fans start to get on his back. A bad defeat next week against the makems, and/or many more uninspiring performances like yesterday and they will get on his back for sure 🙄
