Game On! WBA v Newcastle – Toon turn to attack

Game on at The Hawthorns
Welcome one and all to yet another Sunday afternoon ‘Game On’ article, which this time will see us do battle with Roy Hodgson’s West Bromwich Albion.

Generally speaking we rarely turn up these days when we travel to the Hawthorns, but with the incentive of cementing 6th place and catching up with 5th place should we finally put in a performance that we know we are capable of.

Speaking of putting in performances, West Brom have become rather adept at doing such a thing against us. We used to strike fear into them and pick up points at home and away, but times change and so have our fortunes against the Baggies in recent years.

No more background or build up is needed for this match. It’s been done in the previous couple of days and you can read it by clicking here or here. The first one is our now regular stat-attack while the second one is my match preview. Cast your eyes over both if you have the time.

Team news is below but now it’s up to the boys of NUFC to do the talking where it counts – on the pitch. Hopefully they’ll give us something to cheer today.

Howay the lads!

West Brom: Ben Foster, Billy Jones, Gareth McAuley, Jonas Olsson, Liam Ridgewell, Peter Odemwingie, Youssuf Mulumbu, James Morrison, Keith Andrews, Jerome Thomas, Marc-Antoine Fortuné

Subs: Luke Daniels, Paul Scharner, Simon Cox, Shane Long, Chris Brunt, Craig Dawson, Nickey Shorey

Newcastle: Tim Krul, Danny Simpson, Mike Williamson, Fabricio Coloccini, James Perch, Hatem Ben Arfa, Danny Guthrie, Yohan Cabaye, Jonas Gutierrez, Demba Ba, Papiss Cisse.

Subs: Rob Elliot, Davide Santon, Mehdi Abeid, Dan Gosling, Haris Vuckic, Shane Ferguson, Shola Ameobi

  1. Probably a fair score line. Attacking play was awesome, benny has to play he just has to, pure quality. Still, we can’t hold onto leads comfortably although we did cope well without Colo so fair play.

  2. Yeah that was a fucking great game from us today. We just play so much better than last games. And we can remark that we have the players to do it.
Ba , Cisse and Benny was really good. We could easily score one or 2 more. We need really to give the ball in the feet of Benny after it always something special that happen.
I m so happy a fucking good week end

    Happy days.

  4. We were incredible going forward in the first half and solid in the 2nd. A really good away performance. Hope that Collo isn’t out too long as the thought of Suarez against Perch (who played well today but isn’t a CB) and Willo is not good.

  5. DAVE@333 To be fair he’s a decent fella and not treated well by dippers fans who were baying for his blood because they wanted King Kenny 😆

  6. Very well done by the lads today 2 points more than i expected onwards and upwards eh. 😎

  7. Well done Pardew for FINALLY seeing sense and ditching that **** 4-4-2 formation we’ve been clinging to.

  8. Excellent result and probably the best attacking football we’ve played all season.
So Barfa Cisse and Ba will work together

Barfa got back and covered well too

  9. Great attacking display, Ben Arfa was fantastic

Could easily have disintegrated in the 2nd half so you’ve gotta give some credit to Perch and Willo. Neither really made any mistakes after their goal.

Shame that Colo will probably miss 2-3 games according to Pardew 😥 Didn’t look like his hamstring had completely gone so maybe their is some hope over the week?

  10. Great game that like, the whole team were awesome.

Anyone agree that Gutierrez has a new position? Thought Jonas, Cabaye and even Guthrie were unreal today. Cabaye was everywhere.

And also just heard Jamie Redknapp, desribe our 1st half as the best 45 mins he had seen all season.

  11. Top win – awesome 1st half, beat the bindippers next week and we can start thinking about 5th

  12. Great performance today, Ba Cisse and Ben Arfa looking really dangerous, liked coming through the middle too.

Shine has been taken off the win a little though hearing that Colo might miss 2-3 weeks 😥 bad news. Williamson looks nervous enough with Colo next to him, never mind him and Perch. Not that Perchy put a foot wrong today mind, his game has really come on under Pardew.

  13. HATEM BEN ARFA – what a fucking legend this lad is turning out to be!! there is no1 better in the prem for dribbling!! what a player!!! his best match for newcastle today !! HOW can you ever leave him out?? well done hatem and newcastle united for the display today!!! a win next weekend will defo secure 6th spot HAWAY THE LADS . TOON TOON

  14. Huge blow to be missing Colo next week.

Onus on Liverpool to win though and with Ba, Cisse and Arfa up top we’ll cause them problems.

  15. I think that was our best performance of the season , it’s hard to pick a motm but for me it’s between HBA and Perch even though Cisse got 2 goals and is hell bent on being the new Shearer goals wise . Thought Perch was great again today and now deserves a new contract on his performances the last few weeks . Although he will never be an automatic first choice the lad has now proved himself as a very good squad player , just like Raylor . Onwards and upwards we go a win against the bindippers will set us up nicely for a european spot next season with Chelsea still to play .

  16. Well I said that if we played against WBA like we did against Wolves and Norwich we would get beat…good job we didn’t then!

It was the same formation we played against Fulham when we dominated them for 45 mins, scoring an excellent goal 4-3-3…shame about the second 45mins.

But it showed today how fucking good our attacking line actually is. Ben Arfa was unplayable, what a player that lad is turning into. Where are all the fucking idiots on here who were asking for him to be sold now?

We really put our previous poor performances to bed today, we were bloody excellent. Willo had a better game bit was still shaky, his gaff for their goal was inexcusable. Perch was excellent!

Shows how good we are when we actually play carpet football.

    Bring on Liverpool.

  17. Great result and delighted with the performance.

HBA and Cisse will grab the headlines, but credit also to Ba,Perch,Jonas and Cabaye as they were superb.

I think we all witnessed today the influence that HBA can offer to the side, he reminded me of Pedro whilst Cisse reminds me of Coley 😉

  18. Yeah 1st half we were a different class and although we done well 2nd half and the defence done ok overall but I still think we could have went to the dogs if we had of sat back and tried to hold on to the game, but because we still attacked we stopped WBA from getting in to us

      (Quote)

  19. Every player in that team played their part today. Willio needs to keep his arms down though, I think that goal was a two way mix up and cant really blame one over the other.

But as for are front free, I would take them over any other front three in the league, yes even arsenals with robin van persie.

Hitting momentum at the right time as well, before last week I predicted 9 points until the end of the season and predicted us to get nothing out of this game… well how wrong was I? very im guessing and I think we could put a little run together now and possible pip Chelsea to top 6, and how nice is it to not have to look down the table with us being 8 points clear of Liverpool, very nice, that’s how nice.

PS. Dont hurt your neck looking up at us enrique, as we will never challenge top 6 under Ashley….

    On wards and upwards.

    HOWAY THE LADS

  20. going to put this out there perch was fucking class today made countless interceptions and blocks.

  21. FUKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!! Now I need to wait till 10.30 to see what the fuk happened 👿 👿 👿 👿 👿 👿 👿 😥 😥 😥 😥 My dad says we played amazing.

  22. I bet the bindippers defence are shitting themselves after watching our first half performance . Same tactics next weekend and we will over run them , our midfield proved today they can play a bit and our forwards were brilliant .Bring the fekers on we can take them and prove to Carroll and Enrique that the grass is not always greener on the other side .

  23. I think we’ll beat Liverpool next week and would have thought that regardless of what would have happened today. It’ll be great if we finish above Liverpool(and we will) but that in itself won’t bother Jose or Judas at all, they have a league cup winners medal and are already in Europe with at least one trip to Wembley to come, much as it pains me to say it I’d rather be in their position than ours 🙁

  24. Richie
What with Kenny KKK Dalguish in charge and losser suarez playing for you, and tens of millions being spent on incredibly mediocre players.

      (Quote)

  25. Andy…did I say I wanted to be a Liverpool fan?….I’d rather have seen my team lift the league cup and have already qualified for Europe and with a very winnable FA cup semi final to come though, wouldn’t you?

      (Quote)

  26. Richie I know what you mean mate and yeah I tend to agree.

Blip any game without Colo is going to be a problem, after todays result a lot of fans will be on a high and say that we’ll be ok but I don’t think we’ll be ok if he is out for long 👿

      (Quote)

  27. Alex, agree on Perch mate, he was class and was against Norwich too, if Colo done his hammy I would have liked to have seen a back line of Simpson Colo Perch Santon for the bin dippers.

      (Quote)

  28. RICHIETOON i get where your coming from ,but that is here and now , i honestly see more room for improvement in our club than theirs in the coming seasons . Ashley is building a winning team /club they are trying to buy it just like freddie shepherd did with us and look what happened . We are on the up and they have stood still even with buckets loads of money thrown away .

      (Quote)

  29. Big Dave, too right mate. The second my mate text saying Colo out 2-3 weeks, the buzz I had after the win vanished. Suarez will murder Willo. We need to out score them, simple as.

      (Quote)

  30. i know the whole motm thing is subjective but i dont think perch or anybody can take the champagne from ben arfa today..he’s simply unplayable

      (Quote)

  31. Christ that league table is looking good.

So much hinges on Colo. Surely it’s time for Kadar to step and make a name for himself. Hopefully Tiote will be back for next weekend.
Imagine qualifying for Europe with a back line of Simmo – Williamson – Perch – Santon

Ludicrous! Pardew is a miracle worker!

      (Quote)

  32. We need to go out with the attitude against Liverpool that we are going to score one more then they are imo, cause we are gunan keep a clean sheet without collo.

      (Quote)

  33. Axel…I like the direction we are going in, but I just want to see us win a trophy and get that monkey of our back, short term I’d rather win the league cup than finish 2nd in the league, obviously long term Champions league is the place to be……but as I say here and now, any trophy all day for me 😉

      (Quote)

  34. Richie, yeah i’d say streete would make the bench ahead of him at this point if he wasn’t injured. As it is i’d say it’ll be
    simmo-willo-perch-raylor
Santon and fergy on the bench. One of them or jonas to cover full back and simmo to CB if we get another injury. Bare bones indeed 😐

Great performance by the lads. Front three unplayable, cabaye continuing his recent improvement and perch was great. Krul should’ve shouted on the goal but willo’s never heard the phrase ‘if in doubt, kick it out’?
