Game On! Wigan v Newcastle – Toon unchanged again

Game On at Wigan
Welcome one and all to our ‘Game On’ article which today will see us travel to Lancashire to do battle with Wigan Athletic.

Around 4,500 Newcastle fans will be present at the DW Stadium this afternoon, and it would have been more had we had a larger allocation of seats.

Unfortunately the request for extra seats was turned down down, which I don’t really have an issue with. I mean why should Wigan hand any advantage to us when they have their own agenda to worry about? So 4,500 it is then, which is still not shabby at all and I can vouch from personal experience that those travelling will have an excellent day regardless of the result!

I’m expecting a tough game today. Wigan may have lost last weekend but they’ve been in great form these past few weeks and have given themselves a real chance of staying up when it looked as though they were certs for relegation. Wins at Arsenal and Liverpool along with a home victory over Manchester United have helped their cause no end.

In contrast Newcastle are looking to strengthen their hold on fourth place and know that a win would see them go six points clear of fifth placed Tottenham and seven points clear of sixth placed Chelsea, both of whom play tomorrow.

For more in depth analysis and preview of the match, why not try reading statto’s Stat Attack or my match preview. Both provide statistical analysis ahead of the game, with news of any injuries, potential team news and landmarks that can be achieved through the game.

Team news will be added below as and when it becomes available so keep your eyes peeled. Also keep your eyes peeled for any decent streams of the match and share them with your fellow NUFC fans if you like. Unfortunately it’s not on the box anywhere other than overseas so share the love people.

Howay the lads!

  1. First of all, I’m pretty pissed that the ref is not offering any protections to our players. The wigan players are lunging in with two-footed tackles in 50-50 situations, and comes out on top! Clearly the hype built up this week has got into the squad. 👿
Don’t give up just yet though, the great comeback part 2 might just be on the cards.

  2. Well that ends another dream It only takes a Fulham Spurs now Wigan type result to bring us back to earth

  3. sometimes we just need to keep it simple.
But we just cant keep posession when we get the ball,
or we just hoof the ****** down the park.
Krul has been poor mind really poor.

  4. yes I know Newkie. But With this we are completely dominated in the middle, only Cabaye and Tiote and Tiote is really not here for the moment. I think we are better with our original 4-3-3. But for the moment we just sat too deep so when we get the ball, our striker are 70 yards from the goal just impossible to play.

  5. Great off ball tactics by wigan. They are not letting us settle on the ball and chase it down. We cannot get the ball past midfield without being forced to back pass. We on the other hand as soon as Wigan get the ball we are racing back into position including our mid even if the man on the ball is within a few meters our players are concentrating too much on getting into position.

We had a good run and just like we accept good runs and results we must also accept the bad.

  7. Yes Toonsy I know we concede 2 with our first formation. But i still think we are better with the first one. With this its ****. Now we just need to score one in the 5 first minutes and afte everithing is possible.

  8. JJ-I meant that for the fourth goal, for me all the defenders were in position-however their midfield was overflowing and none of ours were tracking them down…that was Tiote all over for me. With some of Krul’s positioning….

Willo has been poor but not sure i’d blame him for any of the goals? The first he should have cleared it, but then Santon should have stopped the cross…

  9. we really need to learn some lessons from the likes of swansea about posession football.
We are worse than a bunch of school kids out there today.
    Absolutely no organisation

  10. HBA-the idea is that we have 5 in midfield, rather than three. Not much has changed if you ask me, its not the formation, its the players.

  11. Lads why all doom and gloom ❓ it was never going to last forever and maybe this is the reality check the players and fans needed.
But at the end of the day we are still going to europe. and we still don’t know if were going to be worse of than what we were before today, Spurs have still to get a result as do chelski

  12. Its just one of those games.. can’t do anything right, opp scoring nearly every attempt.. these games happen every so often.. frustrating to watch but not the end of the world..

  13. I blame the press .They ignore us and any decent play all season allowing us to go about our business, then when they suddenly realise we might be contenders they build us up and jinx us 👿 😆

  14. at the end its the players that for sure. But i don’t know why we are dominated like that in all the pitch. We just seem lost. Some games things doesn’t go in your way. Just to hope now to score one or 2 and go for a win next game. But in my opinion we need to really stop Krul hoofing this fucking ball and SImpson to. We need to play, we are dangerous only when we play, even it that goes with the risk to lose the ball in our half pitch

  15. Toonsy-222. Exactly.

You can have all the tactics in the world, but if the players aren’t up for it then you’ve never got a chance.

  16. After watching us play even worse than that in the first half against arsenal last season im ruling nothing out… 😉

  17. They have been better teams than us this season. But so have we. Just hope to see some Newcastle goals in the second half. Save face and goal difference.

  18. Big Dave – your right, our run couldn’t last forever but we are playing worse today than we did against Spurs – which was our worst performances of the season IMO.
As has been said earlier, they have been talking themselves up all week then go out and play like this … Disgraceful.

  19. “mike dean saying Im the referee let me handle this”

    Classic dean couldnt handle a **** up in a brewery… 🙄

  20. Krul didn’t even shout Williamson then. Two worst players of a bad bunch today are Krul and Tiote

      (Quote)

  21. they get about 5 people in our box. When we attack we only have Cisse.

What the **** is that about?

      (Quote)

  22. the danish commentator on my stream is saying:

“this is the worst defending i have ever seen”

      (Quote)

  23. a thought cisse was gonna at least make it 7 on the trot then.
    Still time tho 😉

  24. Sky Sports News pundits are now taking the **** about how easy this is for Wigan.
I hate Phil Thompson at the best of times…

Said earlier that we hadn’t won 7-0 for a while but the idea of loosing by that scoreline didn’t enter my head
