Wigan 4-0 Newcastle – Match lowlights

Match highlights, or lowlights perhaps, of the 4-0 defeat to Wigan for you all to watch again, if you dare.

Like many fans I was pretty angry yesterday after the first 45 minutes, in fact I was pretty angry after the 90 also. But I’ve calmed down a bit, watched it all again, and now I wonder if it was as bad as I made it out to be at the time?

Don’t get me wrong, 4-0 is bad, but if you split the game into two halves it paints a different picture. The first half we were outplayed and deserved to be four goals down. You can sometimes carry one or two players having an off day, but you can’t carry a whole team.

The first half was awful. Players played nowhere near the level we’ve come to expect, but then you have to hand credit to Wigan who came at us at 100mph. We just didn’t have an answer for them.

In the second half the damage had been done, but we also played a lot better and resembled the team that we’ve seen in the last few weeks. Papiss Cisse hit the bar, the post and forced a fine save from Ali Al Habsi, and Hatem Ben Arfa came close after making himself some room in the penalty box. We had chances but couldn’t take them.

Onwards and upwards I guess.

  1. Off topic… sorry Toonsy… Apparently Newcastle will offer Australian Curtis Good from Melbourne Heart a contract after he impressed during a 10 day trial.. It will be a senior contract by all accounts so he will be in the 25 man squad next season..
Pardew said it was nice to have an Australian in the squad to help raise the average IQ level in the squad 🙂

  3. I think that about sums it up, I just watched match of the day too (recorded from last night) and it did feel like a game of two halves, but no one can step onto the pitch and start a game so sluggish against teams in a relegation dog fight and not be prepared for a mauling. Just a shame we couldn’t have applied that 2nd half effort in the first, while losing the points will hurt our CL chances big time, I think it might wake the players up from any complacency they may have before the really big games.

  4. I was hoping you would put me right with my spelling, what with you having a typically aussie IQ……..Oh wait. 😆

  5. As I said yesterday, poor performance but have to praise the players for not letting their heads drop and to keep going, also the fans down their who were still singing loud and proud at the end.

  6. BB, I noticed how you deliberately dumbed down your first post just for me 🙂

  7. sometimes its just not your day.
We were unlucky at times too.
If we had gotten a goal early in the 2nd half, it could have changed everything.
Meh 😕 Thats football. or is it soccer aussie ❓

  8. toonsy, first 20 mins were as bad as i’ve seen all season 😥 😥 then the rest of the first half we just didnt try as hard as i thought we would of 😥 😥 , yes we had a few shots at goal, prob on another day , cisse and hba might of had a few goals each, but too many players went missing yesterday, did they think, all they had to do was turn up?? i hope this attitude gets knocked out of them, from now untill next season 😕
some of the comments on last nights blog, (darren smith) calling us, for slagging the team off,, how dare he 👿 👿 👿 i bet hes just a youngin who’s only supported us since the keegan days, i’ve been on this planet since before the fairs cup(just too young to remember it thou), and iv’e seen some proper ***** football from our beloved toon over the years, BUT, i’ve never , ever gave up on them 🙂 🙂
you can sense the club is going in the right direction, so yesterdays result/preformance is just another learning curve 😐
roll on wed night, i can see us getting something out of this game, as the chelsea players, will know have their minds on the FAcup final and champions league final, any bookings or red cards would be a disaster for those individuals 😆 😆
well, off to take one of my sons to his football, have fun boys 😮 😮

  9. Toon Soldier…..Darren has said on the other thread some of his comment wasn’t meant as it came across…….that’s the problem with the written word, open to a variety of interpretations 😉

Snap with the fairs cup, just too young. Talking of 4 nowts one of my best away days was when we got humped by that score off Liverpool in the cup, 13-15k Geordies still managed to silence the Kop all game 😀

  10. @TOONSOLDIER9, as mentioned some of those comments were badly written and as a result misinterpreted. By the time I woke up this morning I had a lot of explaining to do 😉 Can see why you’d think that but I’d like to wipe the slate clean from last night, not exactly the start I wanted to get off too, and certainly not what I intended.

P.S. You’re spot on about the time I’ve followed the club, I started supporting the Toon when we were in Division 1 half way through the season we gained promotion, not that I remember it in great detail as I was a tad too young. But I don’t see it as a negative, can’t help how long I’ve been alive 😉

  11. what 😯 me yesterday was the players were bottling 50/50 challenges.
plus simpson needs to go in the summer he goes missing to much and that just put more pressure on willo..

  12. Don’t apologise to the wankers on this site Darren.. You will make them feel all important and all that.. stand your ground man 🙂 🙂 🙂

  13. Its one defeat it happens to good teams as well as poor teams. We will see a better peformance against Chelsea I am sure. HWTL

      (Quote)

  14. @hitman, it was the right thing to do. The wigan players were coming in with two footed tackles each time and got away with it. The last thing we would want to see is a lengthy lay off to one of our players again.

  15. our performance in the 1st half was shocking and there is no excuse for that, and the point is proved because they were far better in the 2nd half after Pards read them the riot act.

Darren welcome to the blog I sort of get what you were getting at lastnight 😉 . But as someone pointed out it’s not the 1st time it’s happened this season that the players strolled out thinking it was in the bag.

  16. Hope that Aussie defender is better than the last one we had. Granted it’s not hard to be better than Craig Moore!

Is he still drunk and stewing in his own **** in a gutter somewhere? Fecking weakling 🙄

      (Quote)

  17. Take it easy on the Aussie blokes Toonsy 🙂 … Craig Moore is a knob tho..

      (Quote)

  18. @Big Dave, yeah hopefully we can put the game behind us and move onto Chelsea with the same application and effort that has seen us flying so high this season, the good thing is that I can’t see those players offering anything short of 100% after this shock, I think this will put them back in their place…they probably got set in their great form and thought the match would be easier than it proved to be. But there’s no way they can make that mistake against sides like Chelsea and Man City, we’ll need some luck but haway the lads!

      (Quote)

  19. Darren maybe this was the wake up call we needed, I just think we need someone in the team that can grab a hold of the game and players, because we seem to just crumble and all heads drop because we imo don’t have a player in the team that can rally the lads, and tell them to sort their **** out.

      (Quote)

  20. On that point Toonsy.. apparently the club was very impressed with Curtis’s charactor and professionalism while on trial.. its not set in stone but a deal is likely..

  21. Craig Moore is trying to become a player agent now, Toonsy. Got kicked out of Brisbane Roar before we became good – him and his pisspot mates.

And James Troisi walked out of his Turkish club, just because he wasn’t getting paid – or maybe it was because his IQ was too high for the rest of the team. Apparently he had a good season. Scored a few goals. Looking for a new club in Europe somewhere.

  22. trust toonsy to put highlights up “what” highlights”salt into wounds come to mind just getting evil because hes going back to work and getting away from the real work at home, imo until we get that right hand side sorted ie willo and simpson we will get those results, mind the rest apart from colo and cisse were shocking, just like richie didnt turn out when it matters 🙂

      (Quote)

  23. Apparently possession was 52% to 48% in their favor with 10 attempts on goal by them to our 11! ,8 on target for them to our 3 . Funny how in some games we’ve had ****** all possession yet won . 🙄 So much for the possession game eh .

  24. Is there a cuntier club than wigan, Reading some of the guff they are spouting is cringeworthy they won and well helped by possibly our worst display of the season.

End of, We are in europe with games to spare and they are wigan end of…

    fuckwits

  25. CC – You seen some of this shyte they’ve been spouting on footymad? Comedy gold

Moses better than Ben Arfa 😆

  26. toonsy

Aye thats what i was reading laughable pie munching halfwits, To be fair reading some of our “fans” saying they hope we dont qualify for the champions league because barcelona would put 15 past us and how williamson would be raped by messi (like he would be first choice next season) arent far off in stupidity levels 🙄

As it stands i hope wigan stay up despite my hatred and vile and qpr are relegated but next season i seriously hope they **** off back to where they came from…

  27. If you just watched the second half, it looks like noocarsoo were’nt that bad.
Di Santo’s goal was a peach though, very Le Tis like.

  28. Still kind of angry but as always it subsides the day after to a degree….Yesterday was just one of those days, they scored with almost every chance/half chance they had, and such chances were easy because we played so ***** in that first 45 minutes, credit to them though their passing cut us apart.

Then we managed some very good chances, possibly even enough to put it level if it had been our day, instead we missed the lot. Its annoying we didn’t at least get one or two because that would at least have given us some impetus for the next match. As it is we just have to hope this is the wake up this team needs to stop believing their own hype, and hopefully we’ll again be viewed as outsiders.

For whatever reason, not a single Newcastle team seem to be able to cope with the pressure of favourites……Championship season seems to be the only one where we kept it together 🙄

  29. Ugh horrible day yesterday, ruined my weekend 👿 Talk about back down to earth with a bump! Can’t be sad though, still got a slim chance of CL, and it’s been a brilliant season nonetheless. Come on Blackburn!!

Toonsy – Let’s not forget Wigan beat Arsenal and Manure too, so presumably Di Santo better than RVP and Rooney? 😆 Come to think of it, if Manure win the league then that makes Wigan the best team in the country! Why do we even bother with this league table bullshit? 🙄

      (Quote)

  30. Thought we looked very heavy legged yesterday in comparison to Wigan. None of our players could run away from their markers. Our pressing and closing down was also very poor. They excelled at this in the first half.

At least Pardew respected the fans by leading the applause at the end. How many times has it been said if the team was as good as the fans.

      (Quote)

  31. Well it’s a shame our great run came to a shuddering halt, Wigan deserve a lot of credit and were impressive. They were quick to close us down, fast to deny us any room and played some nice football; I thought the scoreline was a tad harsh on us but we simply didn;t meet the standards that we have set in recent weeks. If we put things into perspective, 6 wins out of 7 isn’t bad and our run was due to come to an end at some point. This might be the wake up call that we need going into 3 tough fixtures.

      (Quote)

  32. Watching it back just makes it look even more obvious that Williamson is too weak at CB. No way should he be bullied off the ball like that by Moses from a simple cross field ball. He’s about 5 inches smaller than Willamson, as a centre half you have to win those headers no excuses. Mr Carr please find a powerful CB to go alongside Collo.
