What’s the deal with Demba Ba?

Be careful what you listen to!
It seems as though Demba Ba is making headlines over the summer as the press look to offload him at any given opportunity.

Now just over these last two days we’ve had a series of tweets about NBA basketball turned into a “come and get me” plea from the Senegal hitman, plus we’ve had the decision from the club not discuss an extension to his contract which would involve that dame release clause being taken out.

The thing is, how much of this has actually happened and how much of it has just been made up on the spot, or had far too much read into it? I’m guessing quite a lot of it has as I’ve not seen a quote anywhere regarding any of this.

Remember folks we are in silly season. Demba may stay or Demba may go, but the press will know nothing of it until it’s just about to happen. Remember their primary job is to sell papers, and reporting nothing (which is essentially what they have proof of) won’t do that for them.

It’s the difference I’ve noticed with regard to transfer speculation and attitude amongst fans. If we get linked with a player these days people tend to believe it only when he is holding up a black and white shirt on the club website, yet when a layer is linked with a move away people become that bit fearful and put a bit more credence in it. Why? Isn’t it ALL just speculation?

The message is simple, the deal with Demba Ba is that there is no deal as yet and at the moment the press are having a field day with it. Let them.

If he does go there will be little that we can do about it, but with Spurs (the Tottenham ones, not the NBA San Antonio ones this time…) are rumoured to be the ones looking at him. Can I just ask why he would want to go there? Are they playing in any better competitions than us? Nope. Do they pay better wages than us? Perhaps, but remember they too operate from within their means so any boost in wage won’t be of a scale the likes of Manchester City will be offering.

The real threat is PSG in my opinion, and that is only if they aren’t eyeing “bigger” names. They have money and can pay silly wages, plus it’s the club Ba has supported since a young age, and they also have players who have failed at Parc des Princes that may interest us, like Kevin Gameiro… If he goes there I won’t have any issues whatsoever. Remember when Shearer did much the same thing?

My advice is just chill, relax, enjoy the sun, have a beer and don’t worry about Demba Ba or Tottenham or anything like that.

Just my two cents anyway…

  1. All bullsh+t if you ask me.. while we are at it.. apparently we are after Rosales from twente.. he is a right back and we are sniffing around him..

  2. Good advice there at the end. The summer kicks off over here this weekend and I don’t plan on thinking about transfers until at least Tuesday. By then, Ba will have been sold to San Antonio, Alan Smith will be re-signed by the club on a 4-year deal, and Troy’s big news out of the club still won’t have happened. 😉

  3. Toonsy – amen to that mate!!!

I keep reading on here that we will be looking for a replacement for Ba, Tiote and Krul. Chelsea are supposedly after Tiote for £20m+ yet no bids have came if.
I understand that it stems from the Carroll sale but let’s be right, a deal like that will not be done every transfer window.
We have not said Ba is for sale and Ba is not demanding a move or issuing come and get me statements. It’s lazy journalism.
For the record, I think it’s right that there is no new contract.

      (Quote)

  4. read NUFC.com’s take on Ba – they get it pretty much spot on

in summary, the club wouldn’t mind if someone was to take him off our hands

  5. Good advice.

    What will be will be.
Who goes, who stays is out of our control.

Enjoy the summer. Trust Pardew, Carr and Charnley buy well and that Ashley & Llambias sell well if they have to.

    HWTL

    Howay England!!

      (Quote)

  6. Remember also that Pardew said on the Radio Newcastle interview that the release clause is not as simple as people are making out. Everyone seems to have accepted this value of £7m like it’s fact, all because Harry Vomit Face said so.

      (Quote)

  7. I agree with Toonsy, PSG could pose the biggest threat, but if PSG persue their interest in Dimitar Berbatov, then from Ba’s point of view, if his home town team go elsewhere then why would he want to leave

      (Quote)

  8. So if he was not a success could the club re negotiate his contract down.

    Course not.
So either stand by what he signed or get rid of the mercenary.

      (Quote)

  9. Billy…But it’s the club looking to renegotiate his contract as it’s to remove the release clause, a clause that’s good for Ba but bad for the club surely?

      (Quote)

  10. I can undertsand DL’s problem with renegotiating a contract less than a year into it as it sets a bad precedent. But in this case it’s different, since the club would actually be getting something in return….

Sort of short sighted not to IMO- we can let him walk for 7-8M, or kick an extra 2M, andget rid of the transfer clause. That way, you could at least sell him for market value later which would make the extra wage seem like peanuts

      (Quote)

  11. You will probably find the clause is target related eg only applies if we were relegated or failed to qualify for europe. Agree the only likely suitor is PSG.

Personally I am happy for him whatever. He is great to have here, but if he goes he owes us nothing and has done well for us.

      (Quote)

  12. A lot of hot air around – just what you’d expect for the summer! Enjoy it while you can – nothing is happening on transfers and probably won’t for at least another 6 weeks.

      (Quote)

  13. I hate the transfer window, 99.9% bs spread by lazy journalists, who get 99.9% of their crap from tw@tter and other social media sites. 👿
    Bring on the new season!

      (Quote)

  14. Thats a shame , Ruddy has broke a finger and is out of the England squad for the Euros .The lad must be well gutted .

      (Quote)

  15. Ba seems a very sensible man and I wouldnt be surprised if this is all agent instigated, he should look at the players who have left recently, not many, if any, have gone on to better things.
He lost his form after the ACN so is not the hot property he was in the first half of the season, hope he sees sense and stays.

      (Quote)

  16. I think the other thing to bare in mind with Ba is that the clause only allows clubs to approach Ba, it doesn’t mean he’ll go. If, for example QPR table £7m, I really don’t see him leaving. I can only see him considering teams playing CL football next season, but then again, if he’s going to that club to be a bit part player and not first choice, I doubt it again so there’s probably only a handful of clubs that he’d see himself better off at.

Axel – it is hard luck for Ruddy, he’s played well this season but young Butland is a cracking prospect, would love us to pick him up.
Stinks a bit that he’s picked the young RB from Liverpool over players like Richards or dare I say it Simpson who has at least played a full season in the premier league.

      (Quote)

  17. There’s not much we can do regarding the Ba situation, so if he goes he goes. He’s been great for Newcastle and we would really miss his goals but if he wants out what can you do ,just hope its abroad for his destination. He doesn’t seem to be hinting he wants out though to be fair.

      (Quote)

  18. Where were all these teams clambering for BA last season.. He was relegated with w/ham and was a free transfer.. he scores some goals for Newcastle and he is wanted by every tom, **** and harry redknap. The media seems to find a darling to focus on and they won’t let the truth get in the way of a story.. its going to be a long off season…

      (Quote)

  19. Right now, he wouldn’t be the main striker at any English CL clubs unless Torres leaves Chelsea, which is a possibility I think. PSG are the other obvious choice, but I think Ba realizes that he could just have a great time with us, especially after Pardew has talked about the permanent prayer rooms at SJP and at Benton

      (Quote)

  20. The only other concern I had about Ba earlier in the season was that knowing he had a dodgy knee, whether he would follow Gyans example and bugger off to a nothing club for huge wages, just incase his career was brought of an end through injury – but I really don’t see him being such a player, I think he wants to play at the highest level possible for as long as he can.

      (Quote)

  21. Considering Ba has knee problems which could limit his playing career it is only natural that he and his agents negotiate maximum income whilst he is still able to play. Hence the release clause negotiated. This type of contract can offer him a big pay day every season provided he can find a club willing to accept those terms.

NUFC took a gamble in signing him last season but the gamble paid off. Perhaps the 3 year contract he signed included a ‘pay for play’ element in exchange for allowing the release clause. We’ll probably never know.

It could be that NUFC are more confident that his knee problems are not so serious and are prepared to offer him a normal long term deal so he will be guaranteed full wages during the term of his contract. This would be another gamble by NUFC but would only be offered in exchange for Ba removing the release clause from the contract.

As for PSG , yes Ba would probably walk there to play for them – but with their money, and his suspect knees, I would imagine that Ba will not be near the top of their wanted list.

      (Quote)

  22. i see england really rate Forster, with Ruddy out they have called up a keeper from 2nd div cheltenham town

      (Quote)

  23. I honestly think too much is being made of the clause in his contract , Redknapp said it was a 7 million release clause but how does he know . The club has said nothing and Ba has said nothing about the details of the clause .It could be that it is only activated if we were relegated or if we did not finish in Europe . It could be that it can only be activated if a CL club bids for him or a non English team . It could be if Santa passed his house in december and Rudolph shat on his car . It could be if the team that bid was sponserd by the company that makes his preferred syrup and offers a free life time supply . It could be that the lad really wants too stay and next season is joint top scorer alongside Cisse in a Newcastle side that sweeps too a triple of Fa cup , Europa league and Premiership title . The fact is no one knows except a select few .

      (Quote)

  24. Well the only clubs that can offer him more in England are Arsenal, Citeh ,Manure and Chelsea cause of CLplaying wise. No disrespect to Ba but each of those clubs would probably go for a bigger name with no injury history since that’s what their fans demand . So that only leaves the Dippers and Spurs who offer the same competitions as us and frankly right now Ican’t see that the Dippers are a better option than us. They would have to invest heavily in some decent players to be in contention for CL place or title push imo. Spurs look a better prospect due to players at the club ,but again there is no stability with the manager in limbo contract wise and question marks over Bale and Modric to name but two. No I really believe we are the best option unless it comes down to money in which case we probably can’t compete and not sure I would want us to ,as the days of silly wages are what got us up a gum tree in the first place.

      (Quote)

  25. The thing is Ba never really had much of an injury problem with his knee so far, he’s failed medicals because of a problem that may arise but his only real spell out was with a broken leg. He could play another 10 years and not have much problem or it could go next week who knows.

      (Quote)

  26. If we see a decent striker come in then I think Ba will go. Nothing will happen until July 1 in all probablility. Spurs could easily offer him a bigger wage, 50K a week isn’t that much for a 16 goal scorer and if Dafoe leaves they will be looking for a replacement. Still think they are most likely to try for him. ManU Man City and even Chelsea will be after bigger fish as was already said. A pacy striker would be a good match with Cisse especially with Ben Arfa in behind. We mainly need defensive help to strengthen the squad if we are to do anything in Europe or a cup.

      (Quote)

  27. Ba plays for the Toon and his contract is private.

If wants to go he can but I doubt he does and I doubt that another club that finished in the top 8 would A Buy him B Play him every game and C Pay him enough to forgo all the adulation he gets with us.

All this assumes his contract has a clause in it and he passes the medical.

    Next?

      (Quote)

  28. He’s gone. We can replace him – perhaps for a slightly larger fee, but probably a lower wage

African Nations, he can’t play with Cisse (as a front 2), he hasn’t scored for god knows how long, his knee, we don’t want to be stuck with him on a long-term contract on a high salary, we don’t want to set a precedent for renegotiating salaries/clauses.

    gone, gone, gone

and it’s probably the right call

      (Quote)

  29. Will Newcastle try to make a deal with PSG involving a swap of Ba for Gameiro? Don’t know what Gameiro’s wage demands would be but he hasn’t had success with PSG and we were after him previously. Might be worth thinking about if the numbers work out. Slightly more risky for PSG and could Ba pass their medical? The knee is what removes a lot of the attraction with Ba so it will involve a club who are risk takers as we were in taking him.

      (Quote)

  30. GEORDIETWO we got him on a free so the risk for us was much less than for any club that will have to pay for him .I like your idea of a swap deal for Gameiro if Ba was to leave . The lad would go to his hometown club and we would not have too watch him banging goals in for another english club , It also means not having too use any of our transfer kitty on a replacement .

      (Quote)

  31. I can kind of get the ba and tiote rumours but i really don’t get the Krul rumours? Why do people always talk about krul as one of the obvious ones too leave if someone does go?

He’s never even been a rumour in the papers but people on blogs think he could go…. WHY!?!?!

i really dont get it. 😕

      (Quote)

  32. Good to see some sensible points being raised.
For some reason I’m ok about the whole situation.
If he goes for more money then bully for him, If he gets the chance of CL and takes it, then good luck to him. If he stays with us and gets a new contract then all well and good, so long as he finds the back of the net soon.
Dont want another Alan Smith on the books tho, who cant hit the proverbial cows arse.
So roll on 1st July and the pantomime can really begin. Until then I’m loving this sunshine. 😀

  33. Nobby – because he is a young top talent of a keeper and will be in demand, from any top team.
He aint perfect, but he is improving year on year.
Spuds will possibly need a new GK next season so obviously some peeps add 2 + 2 and get 5. 😕
Plus at the back of everyones mind is the club philosophy of making money from the odd player sale. ala judas.
I dont think he will be going anywhere tho, but thats just my opinion.

      (Quote)

  34. G2 – the whole Ba/Gameiro swap thing, sounds good, but far too straight forward for NUFC to sort out.
Really makes sense, and I would be happy with that, but cant see it happening.

  35. Its been an hour since any one posted but gemeiro snubbed us last summer so I don’t want him, De Jong or Giroud for me, the former being more likely. Also just want to inform Toonsy that I’ve sent off an article 😉

The latest scoop is Danny Simpson will defo be sold, along with Demba Ba and wait for it, Ben Arfa as he’s a loner. They want unity and he doesn’t fit in.

Don’t say you didn’t hear it first from me! 😎

But you tend to believe a bit more when stories about us selling players because we know it has happened and will probably happen again, as even Lambsarse says himsel if we get offered good money any player is for sale 👿

It’s safe to say Ba will sign up for life and Danny Simpson will be Toon captain as well. 😛

  41. @Big Dave

I never take any notice of players we are linked with until it’s official.

Some people debate it with passion as if it’s kosher info.

Fair enough as its interesting for some but I can’t get interested at all. History shows that we get players that haven’t been on the radar.

As much credibility as my sauces which I now take no notice of either. I genuinely don’t believe anyone knows what’s going to happen other than Jabba.

      (Quote)

  42. Troy 100% the only time the papers etc have been linked to the right player that we ended up signing is just luck and the chances that if you name 100’s of players your bound to get one right every so often.
As you say the only person that knows owt is Jabba then Lambsarse and Pards knowing a wee bit less
