Does Alan Pardew deserve a pay rise?

Deserving of a new deal?
So it seems that Alan Pardew is fancying his chances of sticking around at Newcastle after a cracking season last season and is said to be looking to renegotiating his contract with the club.

And why not? After picking up two Manager of the Season awards it could be argued that his stock has never been higher, so doesn’t it make sense to try and renegotiate whilst in a relative position of strength? Isn’t that what you would do?

Pardew is not on great money if reports are to be believed. Details are sketchy on such things, rightly so, but going by recent history of managerial contracts I think it would be safe to assume that his basic wage isn’t that great compared to other Premier League managers, and that his contract will be heavily performance based. If you want money from this regime then you must earn it!

It was well publicised at the time that Pardew was awarded with a five-year deal. It was almost unheard of for a new manager to get such a long deal but, for the moment anyway, it looks to be something that has worked out for Ashley and Co.

However football management is a fickle occupation and whilst Pardew is getting the backing of the majority for now, there is always the chance that a run of poor results or a season where expectations aren’t exceeded/fulfilled will see that popularity start to disappear.

In short I do think he deserves a pay rise although it is hard to work out what level of pay he should be getting without knowing what he is on currently. The problem with a pay rise though is that it makes getting rid a of a manager that bit more expensive, and I’m sure it’s something Mike Ashley will want to avoid again after the whole Sam Allardyce affair.

At the end of the day I do think he deserves a new deal, but I’m also wary if he was to be offered one. Personally I think a little bit of insecurity can be a good thing and can stop people becoming complacent within their role, and with a contract based on incentives, like most of ours are, I think it is generally enough to keep anyone on their toes and keep them working towards making us better.

Would you offer Pards a new deal?

  1. Be interesting to see Debuchy against AOC, not seen much of Debuchy playing live and Oxlade should run him hard

  2. What a good ball through and a **** finish from a toon reject – née wonder we got rid 👿

  3. Our composure up front needs to be more clinical ,missing that little bit of guile that we’d of got from Rooney imo. Much as I hate to say it we are missing him. 🙄 ,Defending o.k at moment ,though Hart looks a tad nervous to me.

  4. Debuchy is real quality. Ive always been a bit defensive of Simpson but if we have the chance of getting this kid we should get it done quick…..

FUCKING GET IN KRYTON HEED !!!!!!!!!

  5. FWIW, the American telecast announcers (who are actually British) are really singing the praises of Cabaye and Newcastle

  6. Oxlade off Young out to the wing and AC on upfront, our best chance of a second is from a set piece and AC could nick a header

  7. He’s been at Liverpool owa a year, he could probably “nick” anything by now 😆

  8. Toonsy ,Witters They will be under orders from UEFA you know how much Mr Platini & co love us . But yes, just said to my daughter ,we are getting **** all here from the ref. And I know Cabs is ours but he been persistantly fouling all game . 👿

  9. Sharpy ,I agree Judas needs to come on soon ,he’ll **** all over that french back four.

  10. Ice , Andy Townsend been singing his praises , Villa connection kicking in ,they are so obviously biased it’s unreal. 😉

  11. Well I would defo have taken the draw at the start and to be fair to England, for the ‘underdogs’ they played as well as they do when they are the favourites … I think that’s sort of a compliment

  12. I see Krul is saying that he wants to stay and doesn’t care if others are interested in him, Chelsea and Spurs are apparently gutted 😆

  13. Shocking match that! Both teams were *****. I saw a thing on tv recently about “walking football” for old men with heart conditions etc. well I think walking football was faster than most of that match. I was completely underwhelmed with that performance. Oxlade-Chamberlain was pretty good and hart made some canny saves. That’s about it really.

    At least we didn’t lose….

  14. Well…my opinion on matters is that…… Hart is an England quality ‘keeper, at least I thought that before the game, (although he was unsighted for the goal and Parker and midfielders allowed the French too much space around our box so he was unsighted) I still think he is much better than butterfingers Rob Green and Calamity James. Scott Parker was barely good enough for Newcastle and I don’t think he is an England player whatever Redknapp ect think. Likewise Milner. I would have liked to see Carroll get in the faces of the french. I didn’t think Welbeck would do much against them and I think I have been proven right.

  15. Here in Holland Ad de Mos a well known dutch trainer was raving about England in the studio after the game . He must of been watching a diffrent game to me ,to say it was pedestrian is overrating the tempo of the game .

  16. This Ukraine Sweden game is canny like. Most entertaining one I’ve watched so far…

I thought England looked OK. Definitely tired towards the end, but well organised. Not sure about Milner though, he seems his old self. Can’t knock him for commitment but I don’t actually think he’s that good.

We certainly ain’t out of the woods yet, judging by Ukraine v Sweden. 😯

  17. Rod ,I was just gonna post the same ,really fast entertaining game ,France & England could come a cropper at the hands of these two.

Thought the England game was very slow and we lack a clinical finisher imo .Would like to of seen AC on to get in the faces of the French back four . I like Hart but he looked nervous today and I think the humidity got to all the players too.

    Happy Birthday Batty 😛

  18. Yeah Kim, it’s certainly lively!

I’d definitely play Carroll against Sweden too, we could do with his brute force, maybe at the expense of Wellbeck, but I wouldn’t mind seeing Young out wide with no Milner. I guess if it was my choice I’d probably play Carroll and Defoe, with young out wide, ‘resting’ Wellbeck and Milner. I’m sure Roy will have something up his sleeve anyway.

  19. Now that was a good game ,but can’t believe how exposed Ukraine were at the end Sweden really should of equalised .

  20. Im all for this paying on performance.

I never thought it could work as I believed every club would have to adopt it but to be fair to the regime they have surprised us all over the past 12 months.

      (Quote)

  21. So to finish me point, aye, if Pards will accept a performance related contract then that’s always the way forward.

      (Quote)

  22. I thought Milner was poor.
    Parker worked his bollocks off.
We defended well, looked organised and capable on the break but not enough individual skill.

But, that’s how the Germans win trophys.

      (Quote)

  23. …and how Greece won it in 2004 Troy. They managed to play the most boring anti-football, with very little attacking. The difference with them though was they didn’t really have the options. Maybe Roy has been watching their videos. 😯

  24. Toonsy, Just got back from Kent via Rugby, stopped off to meet up with some friends. Went to the Duncow at Dunchurch, whats going on at £3.55 a pint? Been told thats one of the cheaper pubs for beer, how do you cope??

Gutted, my Sky plus didnt work for the game, just had to watch 2nd half of the highlighs, not a bad result though

  25. Simon – It’s expensive in Rugby mate. Not only because of Rugby School, but now there is the high speed rail link to London. You can get to Euston in 50mins on the train now which means it’s become a commuter town for London plus places like Birmingham, Manchester etc etc. Beer isn’t the only thing that is expensive. If I sold my house and moved back to Newcastle I could buy a five bedroom house in a decent area with the equivalent 😯

On the plus side, it means that a lot of people are on “London wages” because if they weren’t paid then most would just commute and no business would survive as they would have no workforce so it’s all relative I guess 😆 Mind you Dunchurch has always been pricey! **** Turpin used to stop there in his heyday but I think his ghost lives on 😆 Plus you pay a premium for being near Guy Fawkes’ house apparently 🙄

  26. Ahh Guy Fawkes. I know him. The only man to go to parliament with honest intentions.
