Deal for Hoilett down the toilet?

No deal for Junior
Apologies for the headline. It’s been one of them days and I needed something simple like that to have a chuckle about!

Anyway, according to the local press it seems as though we are passing on the opportunity of signing former Blackburn Rovers midfielder Junior Hoilett.

The 22-year-old Canadian born attacker is a free agent after opting not to renew his contract with Blackburn after their recent relegation from the Premier League. However despite the relegation of Rovers Hoilett has carved out a reputation for himself and has, allegedly, alerted the interest of a number of clubs, including us.

Not any more however as it would appear that this “free” signing would be anything but free for any club who decides to sign him up. Due to his age Blackburn would be owed compensation for nurturing Hoilett but as he is out of contract the amount of compensation would be set by a tribunal. I dare say it won’t be cheap either although it’s also worth considering that a tribunal fee would more than likely be less than what Hoilett would sell for if he was still under contract.

Then there are wages to consider. Apparently Hoilett is looking for a deal worth in the region of £50,000 a week. Like the local press, I can’t see us paying it, but I bet someone will and if they do they will get a cracking little player who has his best years in front of him.

On one hand I feel his alleged demands area bit high, but on the other there is the fact that good players sometimes cost a bit of money. Anyway, all irrelevant now I guess.

Do you think we’re making a mistake by passing up the chance to sign Junior Hoilett?

  1. long time no comment! Have we had a good preseason so far??? love the word pun toonsy! 😛

No shame in walking away from a player like Hoilett if he wants that much pay, plenty of other fish in the sea.

  2. TBH we were never really linked to him anyway were we!?!?!? Is he any better then we already have?? Probably not,

We need an out and out centre forward not another BenArfa type that we already have 3 / 4 of.

  3. He would have been useful. We don’t know how Marveaux will be when he comes back, and Ba wasn’t great on the wing in the second half of the season (although I think that can change). The idea of him playing in a front three with Ben Arfa and Ba/Cisse is pretty enticing. But you have to trust the team leadership. Maybe they saw something like they did with Gervinho last year, or maybe it was just strictly down to finances.

  5. £50k a week is a lot for someone who still has a way to go yet imo. Yes he has undoubted talent but he still needs to realise that talent week in week out in the PL and be successful in a successful club to be really recognised as such . It’s at that point you can start asking top dollar and not befor imo.

Off topic but I see Gyan has left Scum for an undisclosed fee. No doubt MON will now have that cash burning a hole in his pocket and maybe he would go for Hoilett or Anita perhaps. 😕

  6. seems liek we will be bringing in free or very cheap bright young prospects. thats great but i hope we get A COUPLE lol.. of established players too. so far there seems to be zero on that front.

  7. As Scottie says, I don’t think we were ever heavily linked anyway…shame though, decent player.

Craig..can’t see us getting that many, maybe 2 though 😉

  8. wow that’s great news. Didn’t Ivory Coast make the final last year? Why should they have to qualify. Dumb tournament gets dummer.

  9. Richie@9 Oh dear ,that will just bring out more sutors for Ba and Cisse as it’s more likely Tiote would be away than them . 🙄

  10. Kim…I don’t thik the ACoN would make much difference as to whether they stayed or not tbh, if they have great seasons up unitl Jan then clubs would be after them regardless.

Brendan…I think they all have to qualify(hosts and holders apart), but Senegal weren’t seeded so got drawn against one of the big boys…I think 😉

  11. Hoilett is over-rated. He looks nifty but he’s not enough of an influence on a game.

Ya beat me, was just about to post that. Great news, means we either keep Cheik or the Dembas, better than losing both.

  13. That’s fantastic news regarding the ACON! We can either keep Cheik, or continue to terrify defenses with our 2 clinical finishers! Obviously, most NUFC fans will be rooting for Ivory Coast for selfish reasons. Do we know when we’ll know which side goes through, or when the last game is?

    An exciting prospect!

  16. Me thinks Gael is Alan Smith’s replacement, Amafilitano is Guthrie’s, Marvauew is Lovenkrance’s and when we see a striker come(still reckon we will) he will be Best’s replacement.

Well the use of words anyway, I find what it’s saying pretty disappointing tbh. Think it was obvious to all that Hiollet was never going to be a ‘cheap’ freebie (if that makes sense), but as your other hand says, good players cost money.
I’m nee footy manager or transfer negotiator, and everything is simplified when we discuss things like this. I don’t know if it’s something we do anyway but I’d be saying to Hiollet, £30k a week with bonuses for assists/goals, cup games he features in where we progress and an end of season bonus if we qualify for Europe again or win a cup or something. Basically if we do well, he does well.
This is a talented player showing alot of confidence and ability so early in his career and can/will only get better IMO, plus he ticks Cashleys golden box with a potentially huge resale value.
