Should we be worried about Papiss Cisse’s fitness?

Problems for Papiss?
The Northern Echo suggested earlier that Papiss Cisse wasn’t given permission to join Senegal’s Olympic squad due to fitness concerns.

Apparently it is felt that by Cisse spending time away with his national team over the summer, that the striker may not be fit enough for the start of our own campaign.

Ordinarily I wouldn’t be concerned about it but with Papiss Cisse it seems different. I don’t know whether he is still getting acclimatised to life in the Premier League or whether there is genuine concern for his fitness, but I distinctly remember numerous occasions at the back end of last season where he cramped up at the end of games or ended up being substituted.

Of course when you look at his goal return you might wonder what the problem is, or even if there is one, but imagine what he could do if his fitness was carefully managed and made sure that he functions at his best every week, for the full 90 minutes. That won’t happen though if he isn’t at Newcastle United with our bodies looking after him.

Hopefully after a full pre-season for us we’ll see a better Papiss Cisse who can contribute for the full 90 minutes without feeling any effects such as cramp. I’m sure it’s just a matter of time before it comes and he becomes more familiar with the pace and intensity the Premier League requires, but until then should we be looking to nurse him through pre-season to make sure he can hit the ground running in August?

  1. I think it’s more to do with fitness problems “may arise” if he went to the Olympics as that would mean he’d pretty much play competively from Aug 2011 until May 2013….possibly 😉

  2. I’m not worried about it. Summer is the time to get players fit, and the club has very specific dietary and workout plans for each of the players. It makes sense that the club would want to oversee that process.

Plus JJ is probably right as well….

  3. Toonsy, you do worry a lot! Don’t know how you manage to do so much globetrotting with your anxieties.

  4. Oh ****, Ive just read the article and I think I do agreed with Richie!! 😯 🙁

Asides from injury concerns, Pardew will obviously want Cisse to spend time with the other players for pre season. I’m sure we’ll allow him to leave for the National team games, but the Olympics are a load of bollocks anyway

  5. I remember seeing this on a number of occasions, Chelsea away being one of them – but i think this is down to his work rate – he covers a lot of ground both offensively and defensively, mayble we’ll have another top strikler who can come on for the last 10-15 mins to give a break, Demba always looked fit as a fiddle – even when he wasnt scoring.

  6. Re other stories today –

I see Lovern is off to Birmingham. Good move by Clarkie and wish him well.

Also John Carver has been singing Amalfitanos praises about his work ethic and attitude, so that’s good to hear.

  7. Not sure if you guys are aware – but Ramadan starts next week and goes through to 18 Aug (exact date dependant on the moon). That’s the first day of the season v Spurs. If Demba was fasting during the season then he will definitely be during the off season. I guess this will be the case for Cisse too maybe this has affected his Olympics decision/fitness for club football?

  8. Well if what we witnessed last season was an unfit Cisse, all I will say is I’m not half pleased that I aint a premiership defender, he was frightening enough when unfit, but a fit one, boy that would frighten, big style

  9. Why there needs to be football in the Olympics, God only knows…

It has its own world cup. Bigger than any Olympic event.

The Olympics is a joke! There should be athletics, swimming and gymnastics…

The amount of sports included is ridiculous.

  10. Just spoke to the wee hen at the Hacker Pschorr stadium in Landsberg am Lech. Despite there being absolutely nowt on the NUFC official web site, the Newcastle United (she said it really well for a Jaarman) versus Monaco game will most definitely go ahead on Monday (good job, cos ESPN are showing it too 🙄 ).

There is no pre-sale of tickets, the tickets will be available on the night, with the ticket office opening between 17:00 – 17:30. Prices 10 euros for adults…

I wonder why the club have are saying nothing about the game ? Maybe they’ll send a bunch of bairns ? Strange one if you ask me, and taking the pi## out of the fans along the way too…

  11. JJ agree on the Summer Olympics. Outside of boxing and a few track and field events, I could care less. I’m more of a Winter Olympics guy anyways

      (Quote)

  12. JJ-To be fair though most athletics bore the complete **** out of me, i’d rather see Messi and some other young SAmerican talents kick the ball around for 90 mins than watch 90 mins of a three hour race..but I do get your point.

I guess it at least gives the minnows a shot at glory, I mean the world cup winners are still in single figures!

      (Quote)

  13. Yeah the winter stuff is so much better…makes me wish I lived anywhere but Britain whenever I see it though..

  14. I agree with Sharpy 😀
Don’t think theres owt to worry about, I just think his time would be better spent with his own team getting up to top fitness and getting time to get to know his team mates better.

  15. Dave – where did you disappear to on the last article?!

It must run in the genes cos I was amazed at his anxious thoughts as well.

I’m right behind our illustrious leader Toonsy but this article shows signs of desperation!

Roll on the new season cos Toonsy will be suggesting that Stu79 has a sense of humour! 😛

      (Quote)

  23. Troy ,I think Toonsy is just asking the question that many people are asking ,what’s desperate about that? 😉 Just because it’s not what you believe doesn’t make it any less worthy of debate 😉

      (Quote)

  24. Troy whats happening Lad haven’t seen much of you lately

  27. @kimtoon

Just cos others ask the same questions as Toonsy doesn’t make him any less desperate.

I give credit to Toonsy when it’s due likewise criticism.

It’s now many weeks following the end of the season and the subject is over Cisses cramps?

He only scored countless goals and been our star performer but lets mention his cramps which personally many were not aware of until it was mentioned.

Kim, we’re you really aware of Cisse’s cramps? Tell the trooooooth?

  28. Andy……not even in the top 50 transfer deals 😉

DJG….nowt to do with how much wages they can stump up if the player wants to leave, and maybe they can stump up those wages because they get funds from selling players 😀

AoD….He may well go to Brum as he said ages ago he wouldn’t mind going on loan for his last year in a player coach role…….but just as the Daily Fail was wrong about Simpson being out of contract, they are also wrong about Harper…unless they cancel by mutual agreement 😉

      (Quote)

  32. Aye, he’ll be on a few bob…if we’d beat them at home he’d have probably been sacked….fine lines and all that 😐

      (Quote)

  33. True, A five year deal simply means that he will be well compensated when he does get sacked after they have a poor run of games… Contracts mean nowt in the world of football 😐

  34. Were you answering Amalfitano’s interview questions for him?
