Can we really pull off a transfer masterclass?

The unlikely transfer
As soon as news broke regarding our rather audacious bid to bring Andy Carroll back to Newcastle, I always knew that the headlines would be dominated by it for the next few days or so.

And so it is proving with numerous and plentiful headlines reporting many different bits and bobs and potential obstacles that could stand in the way of any deal ever coming off.

Sure it’s exciting, maybe even romantic, but I honestly can’t see it happening for us as there are an awful lot of potential obstacles that could scupper any deal. I’ll go into the issues in more detail below, but suffice to say that I think this transfer, whilst sensational, won’t happen for a combination of the reasons I’m about to mention.

Liverpool are unlikely to want to lose so much money on a player they paid £35m for 18 months ago, especially when you consider that the club interested in buying the player is the very same one that ripped the eyes out of the deal and bragged about it soon after. The public humiliation would be too much for Liverpool to handle in my opinion, especially if we bought him back for less than half of what was paid for him.

Then there are the dynamics of any deal and the fine print involved which would cover wages. Carroll is reportedly on somewhere in the region of £75k a week. I’ve read a lot of people saying how he’d take a pay cut and all he’s ever wanted to do is play for Newcastle, but he was doing just that and was happy enough to sign for more money at Liverpool and move away from Newcastle in the first place wasn’t he? He’s a footballer, end of.

Apparently he is interested in a move back to Newcastle and the reason this story has been made public is to put some pressure on him to force things along himself. My question is how much of a pay cut would he really be willing to take? Or how much close would the club be willing to go to his current wage? Only Andy Carroll, his agent, and the club will know that one…

I very much doubt it is going to happen, for these and more reasons. However, to borrow a cliche, football is a funny old game and anything can happen so in this mad world that is Newcastle United I’m not going to rule it out totally.

Just 95% instead…

  2. Hey Troy why don’t you post that Andy Carroll quote again; it’s been a while since you did that.

  3. LIVERPOOLRED@75 I understand your clubs need to get as much as possible for AC but they are in a no win situation as NO ONE is gonna pay £18m ,dream on mate ,dream on ,same with your desire for all 6 points LMFAO at that one.

  4. KIM owlheed has said they wont offer a new contract on any player in there first yr at club, mind that was before the season ended, change of heart maybe?

  5. LiverpoolRed….. just for the record..putting the word ‘fact’ into your statement doesn’t make it true…or factual for that matter 🙂 🙂

  6. Fans @81 Don’t worry ,while all this rumbles on ,they will be in the background wheeling and dealing while nobody is looking.I do love a good smokescreen. 😉

  7. Reading that article on the Chronic, I get the sense that Big Andy is really a big, dumb galoot and a sentimental sap to boot. I kinda feel bad for the big dummy, as much as you can feel bad for a guy who’s making 80k/week.

  8. Andy won’t leave for any other club but Toon – he just wants to come home. The reds are in a bad position because if they don’t take a big financial hit (and let’s face it, why would any club have to pay more than £10m for a 4-goal “striker”?) they’ll shell out another £3m in salary for him to warm the bench.

    I can see it happening.

  9. I dont normally post rumours but I was told that Debuchy was having a medical for us yesterday, this came from a 1st team fringe player.

  10. Andy would be a good addition to the team. If you put your mind back to last season in our last home game against Citeh, Dzeko was brought in the game late into the 2nd half and made the difference. His hold up play and strength dominated our defense and the rest was history. It’s important to have a plan B, as I could remember clearly that neither Cisse nor Ba made a noticeable contribution in that game. Hence the need for the strength and power of Carroll.

  11. To make this deal happen it would be Carrol for Demba Ba + cash. Newcastle won’t want to have two strikers going to the African Nations Cup in January and February so going for Carrol makes sense. However, to get Carrol Liverpool would want to replace him with a proven Permiership goalscorer and their most realistic option is Demba Ba. Neither Carrol or Demba Ba will want to sit on the bench at Newcastle. Offloading Demba Ba to Liverpool for 7m to get a striker that would be valued for much more than that for Newcastle in Carrol minimizes the potential loss on losing Demba Ba before the end of July.

  12. Just ripped this from the Journal:
Meanwhile, reports that Newcastle are closing in on a £7m move for Mathieu Debuchy appear to have jumped the gun slightly. Debuchy is on holiday and, while United are in negotiations with Lille, work still needs to be done on the deal.

  13. Hitman you seem to have sources everywhere 😉 😆

Debuchy back from his hols yet? Don’t see why anyone would feel the need to cut them short to sign when he wouldn’t start training with us until hatem and yocabs come back anyway

  14. Misternavin@93 That’s what i feel might happen too, hence my post @73.I have seen on Pool forums that they want Cabaye in a straight swap 🙄 I would not be happy with that .

  15. By the way, I’m seeing 13.5 million as the bid for the Big Dummy. How much did we bid for De Jong?

Strip away all the sentimental sweetness and/or bitter recriminations about the deal with LFC and I just wonder, is he worth 13.5?

      (Quote)

  16. @Begas

That would be ridiculous. Posting an Andy Carroll article on an Andy Carroll thread. 😯

No. No. No. Let’s talk about avatars and Brisbane Roars. 😛

  17. Carroll will only ever get the wages he is at Liverpool. He would know this, so where ever he ends up, he will have to take a large wage cut… In my opinion he would be worth around 10m.. hasn’t scored the goals so I can’t see why he would be worth much more.. I refuse to base a purchase price on a percetage of what Liverpool paid… They were ripped off, pure and simple..

      (Quote)

  18. @Begas

Yeh. There’s a slight problem there for us apart from you.

You are the only one interested in the Bris Bores. 😛

      (Quote)

  19. I know. Pity that. But everybody else talks ***** so I might as well do it as well.

  20. Im starting to realise why Begas normally avoids getting in a war of banter.

He really struggles with good responses and leaves himself wide open. 😛

Trumpet and Thud are the same. 😛

Faussie makes a real effort and occasionally gets a laugh from me. Bless him. 😛

      (Quote)

  21. Apparently Barca have signed Neymar for 71m……. wtf…. Based on that Carroll would have to be worth around 35m 🙂 🙂

      (Quote)

  22. Oh Troy. I thought we might get something started but then you slip into the oneupmanship routine.

    Time to ignore you again.

      (Quote)

  23. @faussie

Aye. £35m and neymar. (lorn yesel Geordie Aussie and you’ll get it). 😉

Begas is still struggling for a retort . 😛

  24. FSOTC @94

That story is written by Mark Douglas who is absolutely pathetic. He is so non commital in every article he writes.
I can’t remember one deal that he ever said was close or immenent without retracting it the next few days saying there “might” be a hitch.

He feeds off rumours, eliminates to obvious bullshit and then covers his **** to sound reliable. Which in fact IMO makes him the least reliable of the lot.

Every story he writes has nothing new to say.

      (Quote)

  25. Begas in another hissy fit wooo hoo hoo hoo 😀

Just been in NUFC shop at the metro centre and seen AC trying on some toon shorts. 😯

  27. On another thought, we really should have tried to have a pre-season in Australia or South America or somewhere else in the middle of nowhere until the end of July, effectively kidnap Ba and make sure he can’t actually travel to any club to sign for them…

      (Quote)

  28. Newkie @119 ,Or the club could of just offered him an extended better contract ,oh yeh and removed that bloody clause. 😉

      (Quote)

  29. Newkie,

We tried to get a preseason in South Africa but the sponsors pulled out of the deal because Man United decided to tour the same dates and they were worried they wouldn’t get the coverage they wanted.

      (Quote)

  30. Kimtoon-I’m sure the club must have made some sort of offer, or Pards had a discussion over it. To be honest I think Ba is just waiting to see if PSG would come in, which looks impossible now, or maybe any other club which would beef up his wages. So he’s probably said to put it off til August…and by then there doesn’t seem much point if it does become a 15mil buyout

      (Quote)

  31. Newkie, I am all for a pre season tour to Australia, purely for selfish reasons mind you 🙂

Kim, the club could set a dangerous precedent by altering players contracts after a year.. They would then have the ones playing well knocking on the door to renegotiate terms.. not a good thing

      (Quote)

  32. Even if he doesnt come to us and goes to west ham for the reported 15 million fee, we supposedly get 25% of his sell on fee, so we’d still pocket nearly 4 million from his sale, not bad if you ask me

      (Quote)

  33. JJ-Fair enough….Germany and France aren’t far enough for my liking 😛

Andy Carroll not on the team plane apparently…. 🙄

Have you got anymore **** songs? 😉

It keeps Begas and Buttheed Aussie busy singing . 😛

      (Quote)

  35. Aussie @123 , I understand that logic but Ba is a different kettle of fish which the players must realise . Just think the club is taking a huge gamble on him hanging around like.

      (Quote)

  36. 😡 …beat me to it Newkie/Kim, was just about to post that scoop! 😯 😆
Who needs Newsnow with this blog eh…

  37. Aussie-Aye, Newcastle vs Newcastle Jets would be a blinder 😉

I remember watching Manure vs Australia at the MCG about 12/13 years ago now, maybe Newcastle can play the national side next year?

  38. Lee Ryder in the Chron has some critics but he called the Carroll deal last week and I get the impression he is now onside with the club but only allowed to release as much information as he is allowed to.

      (Quote)

  39. Kim, I see your concerns, as I posted earlier, Ba’s contract won’t be that cut and dry and it won’t just be worded totally in his favour.. Who knows what the truth and conditions are around the buy out component of it.. 🙂

      (Quote)

  40. Also with this Ba contract changing to 15mil buyout in August or whatever-does he still get half of that? Because surely he’d just hang around till August before moving if that was the case… 😯

      (Quote)

  41. Well Liverpool would be without the majority of their team if Euro players aren’t going yet. Is Gerrard, Hendrrson, Downing, Johnson ect.. on the plane?

      (Quote)

  42. Im sure carroll would have got more time off after the euros anyway, Good old sky always scraping the barrel… 🙄

      (Quote)

  43. We know we are bored without footie when we start analysing who gets on a plane or not 😆

      (Quote)

  44. Carroll was never going to be on the team plane for the tour because he got given an extra week off because he was involved in Euros.

Sky just scraping the barrel again. They get sadder and sadder. Remember the days they had an ounce of respect. 🙄

  45. CC

To copy my statement, you have some cheek… But to use the same cliche… well thats taking it too far!! 😛 😉

      (Quote)

  46. 139-True, but the only one they’d miss will be Gerrard, and they’ll have to get used to playing without him when he gets crocked again soon…

      (Quote)

  47. JJ &CC, you both seem well versed in scaping the bottom the barrel… is there something you want to tell us 🙂 🙂 🙂
