Expect a stronger side to be played this evening

Colo back in action this evening
Newcastle take on AS Monaco this evening in what will be our second game of pre-season to date.

Kick-off is at 7pm local time (6pm UK time) and the match is scheduled to be broadcast live from the Hacker-Pschorr Sports Park Arena courtesy of ESPN.

Newcastle lost their opening fixture of the pre-season schedule 1-0 to German third division side Chemnitzer FC although it must also be pointed out that our starting line up barely resembled the one which will start in the opening Premier League game of the season against Tottenham Hotspur in approximately one months time and was instead filled with what can be called fringe players and prospects.

However this evening we are likely to see a stronger line up with Fabricio Coloccini set to start and Papiss Cisse, Cheik Tiote and Sylvain Marveaux likely to play some part in proceedings this evening. There will still be a chance for some youngsters to shine with James Tavernier tipped to start at right-back with an opportunity for more to shine during the course of the match.

I remember a time when Newcastle played AS Monaco in the UEFA Cup. It wasn’t that long ago to be fair and if I recall correctly they knocked us out (remember Jean Tigana and has chewy matchstick thing?). Right now though they languish in the French Ligue 2 after failing to win promotion back to Ligue 1 at the first attempt. In contrast we’ve followed the same path but managed to escape the second tier at the first time of asking and now we’re back in Europe.

Funny how things work out isn’t it?

Spoken to ‪#Nufc‬ re Carroll: reluctant to move from season loan with option. They don’t think ‪#lfc‬ will do business with them on those terms.

Perhaps that’s understandable in light of £35m etc, but less optimism deal can be done in spite of Carroll’s willingness to return.

Carroll has been on holiday in Brazil, by the way. The country. Not Alan. I’m almost certain about that.

  11. I think what this line-up has taught us is that we are running light at the back and we are ready for two (2) defenders to be signed this summer. If S.Taylor was injured again and Collo picked up a knock or got a red card we are relying on Williamson as one senior CB in the squad. We need at least 4 centrebacks in the squad IMO. Maybe 5 for a season like the one coming up, Perch can be no. 5. Ideally we should have one big centrehalf on at all times. A back 4 of say Collo, Perch, Simpson and Santon is too weak in the air for my liking.

  12. “Conversation” I’ve just had with George Caulkin of the Times for what it’s worth:

    John ‏@4EvaToon
@CaulkinTheTimes so Liverpool have an unhappy player costing them £4 million a year in wages – doesn’t make sense.

    George Caulkin ‏@CaulkinTheTimes
@4EvaToon no, they’ll let him leave, but looking for permanent deal.

  13. DJG-Agreed.

At least two defenders needed, should simmo go we need 3. One that’s a versatile CB/RB would go a treat as well…

Oh, and that without Cabaye we’ll basically hoof it all game..

Aye . I still remember his quote as if I was there.

” Carroll is worth f**k all. I had a bet with Mike that I would streak across the pitch if we didn’t get £40m for him. Ok I lost and did it.
We got £35m up front and me and Mike asked each other where it all went wrong as we rolled about the bedroom with our cash.” 😯

  18. Clearly L’pool want rid of Carroll. However, no club is going to pay upwards of £15M. So NUFC just need to sit tight now, while getting in some defensive re-inforcements. Can’t rule out Ba going the other way, but I’d like to see him stay.

      (Quote)

  19. I see one paper is claiming that Liverpool is demanding £20m for Carroll 🙄 , no one will pay that, Newcastle won’t go beyond £15m and I even think that might be beyond what they’ll bid.

…anyway, Sammy and Alfie Tanner had good games as did Media Beard, mind yee Santon looked alreet anarl; linked up well wi Alfie Tanner on the right wing. Ervalapping anarl that lingo.

    Harper made a fantastic FACE-SAVE 😯

….Ba’s header from 47mm out, surely the goal of the pre-season.

  23. I reckon the loan bid was very good/clever tactically from Newcastle, what essentially has happened is we’ve played to Carroll’s sympathy. We knew that Liverpool wouldnt agree to it but it was what Carroll wanted. It shows to Andy that Liverpool won’t loan him, portraying them to Andy as the ‘bad guys’ and us as his boy-hood club ‘rescuing him’. He’ll put in a transfer request in the next week to join us, trust me.

Ba cannot hold the ball up anywhere near effectively as Carroll.

Ba is more direct when playing in the main strikers role.

    Is that enough Aussie. 😉
    😆 😆 😆
Now it is all clear to me…. your detailed explanation of the vast differences between Carroll and Ba is outstanding and full of insightful revelations.. 😯 😆
So Carroll would add more variation to our forward set up than a small pacy striker like Gamero? – I feel embarrassed for you Troy, I really do…. You can be an amusing adversary on here at times but over the years you have simply become a cartoon character with no real credibility. I am saying this as a friend, so please don’t be too offended Love you long time – Aussie  😆 😆

  30. Aussie, at 198, do you mean Kévin Gameiro of PSG? I don’t really want to get in the way of what seems like a wonderful argument, but if you are trying to come across as an expert, it might help to spell the player’s name right. 😉

(Or, if you mean Franco Gamero of NJIT Highlanders… what’s a polite way to put this? “I was not aware that he had been linked with NUFC.”)

      (Quote)

  31. not trying to come across as an expert Wellington… The player could have been any small pacy forward tbh, o.k I knew the name was not spelled correctly (didn’t really care 😎 ) but the point of the discussion was that a small pacy striker would offer more of a variation to our attack than a Carroll returning.
    Point taken tho.. 😉
