Ashley holds the key to Andy Carroll deal

The deadly duo looking to cut a deal?
Another day and another angle on Andy Carroll’s potential move back to Newcastle United.

As things stand there has been no new movement that has been widely reported, although there are now quotes from Alan Pardew pretty much confirming that we do have an interest in our former number nine.

Ultimately, like all deals, it will come down to money and the only man who can provide that is Mike Ashley. It would prove to be a popular decision to bring Carroll back from Liverpool and end his Anfield nightmare, but any deal would have to make business sense and if Liverpool are looking to recoup more than what we are willing to offer then there will be no deal between the two sides.

Meanwhile Alan Pardew has admitted that he has little to do with negotiations and insists that it is at boardroom level at the moment. Crucially he also hints that negotiations are ongoing and that we’ve not pulled out of any potential deal, yet…

“That whole process is a little bit more involved with the chairman and the board at Liverpool,” Pardew told The Chronicle when asked how far away from a deal the two clubs are. He added: “We’ve got a great team here, a great squad, and if Andy Carroll comes it’ll only add to us.”

“It’s simple, really. Sometimes transfers are done at corporate level. I’m slightly detached from that. It’ll be what it’ll be.”

“It’s been said that he’s available, and if we’re involved then we’ll be involved because of the figures, not anything else, because we know he’s good enough. I’m slightly detached from it.”

There are far too many rumours and “in the know” accounts of what is happening right now, but if you believe them it would appear that Liverpool want rid of Carroll, that Carroll is receptive if a move back to the North-East, and perhaps most crucially, that the board are interested in making it happen.

Whiich is why Ashley holds the key to any deal involving Andy Carroll…

  1. I think this is fair enough. The manager and recruitment team put their wishlist forward, then it’s down to the money men to try to land as many as possible within the constraints (cost, terms, strategic fit) they have laid down.

I think we’re in the driving seat and Ashley knows it. The bindippers have put themselves in a very weak position now; either pay £70k a week for a benchwarmer, or write off a big loss and move on.

I’d love to see it happen. Somehow since he had such a ‘mare at SJP last season a lot of the animosity has gone and I just view him as a silly boy who was talked into a stupid decision. Let’s have him back, plus £15-20m profit, and make best use of him. It’s clear he can only really play in black and white, and if Pards thinks he can fit him into our playing style, I trust his opinion.

  2. Toonsy / big Dave –

I agree the board handle negotiations but where are Carrs recommendations ? His record has been flawless so I would of though we’d be using his knowledge of other leagues to get some little gems!

I like Abeid after yesterday’s game, he ‘has it all’ can tackle, dribble, pass and shoot. Also he is about 6ft, he is gonna have a good season IMO

  3. I can’t imagine we’d be going for Bigger Lad without the approval of Carr. I think this deal fits too well to be ignored, tbh. We get a known quantity who we know bleeds black and white and scores in the PL for us. And we get to rub the yank bindipper noses in it on the way out. Not that the latter should be a factor, but knowing Ashley it must count as ‘sport’.

  4. get him signed would be fantastic get the defence sorted and the team can finely get some silver ware come on big lad come home

  5. Bigpapa – True, but then we know exactly what Carroll can do so it’s less of a risk. We know how to use him and everything like that.

  6. I cant blame him for not playing ball if liverpool are demanding £20m from us, Its understandable they want to recoup most of the outlay but no one will pay that for mandy unless Kenny gets another job 🙄

If they want to raise funds to bring in buck rodgers transfer targets hopefully sense will prevail and the £15m and £80k a week off the wage bill would help matters.

I also read that the £13m offer is actually worth £17m because of a sell on clause has this been confirmed ??

  7. Now I see this morning that they press are saying that Cessepool have increased Carroll’s asking price to £20m yeah… well if what we heard was correct at the time & that Ashley invoked a 25% sellon clause into selling Carroll to Cessepool, doesn’t that mean we could get him bvack for just £15m, where is, the likes of the Wet Spams or Vile would have to pay the full £20m asking price 😕

Personally, if we’re willing to pay out £15m or whatever the asking price is for Carroll, why wouldn’t we pay that for De Jong 😕

  8. It’s about now that someone will come on here and start banging on about how we should be more like Barca… 🙄 😆

  9. Loving how the magical black and white goal scoring shirt that Andy may wear this season will suddenly help him rediscover his scoring touch. It is a special garment made for Shearer’s boot laces, Ferdinands shorts and Wor Jackie’s socks. It has been said that no matter how poor a player is, as soon as he dons this shirt, he will be good again. The sooner he gets this shirt, the sooner will score again, it is that simple…
Poor Andy, if only he knew that the shirt held the power before he left… things could have been different 🙂 🙂

  10. Personally I think we should stay clear of him. A good striker does well anywhere. Demba Ba, Papiss Cisse to name two.

The Excuse given for Carroll’s flop is he can only play in black and white. That is not a scientific analysis and should not be used to justify paying £15-£20m for a striker who had a decent season in the championship and a relatively decent half season followed by a terrible half season and a horrid full season most recently.

People it would be great to have Shearer back but we all know he would not be able to perform. Likewise Carroll. You are only as good as your last season and Carroll last season was bad. Don’t let sentiment cloud your faculties.

We don’t need him so we are not desperate. If we are going to spend we should put that money on Luke De jong. If Carroll is giving up on Liverpool then that is certainly not the attitude we want someone who gives up. IF he is tired of Liverpool let him go to West Ham.

Ashley has sense and the last time Newcastle fans had a say in who we buy, sack, hire as manager all based not on reason but sentiment we were relegated. Don’t make the same choices a second time.

      (Quote)

  11. CC – At the time we put in a 25% sell on so realistically it should make it 25% cheaper for us to sign him, or Liverpool pay us 25% of the £20m they want from another club. So sell hi to us for £15m, or get £15m after losing 25% to us 😆

Stitched up either way they are 😆

  12. Wouldn’t pay a penny over 5 – but would consider releasing add on performance clauses the dippers are contracted to because as it seems Carrol won’t hit any heights there to release those payments. Still feel he would be a major step backwards – immediately and even worse in the future. I don’t want to see lumpball.

  13. @7 – because de Jong is an unknown quantity in the PL, whereas we know Bigger Lad can deliver. We’ve spent a lot on young, promising strikers that have failed to step up. Not saying de Jong wouldn’t, but these owners have learned the monetary cost of getting your risk balance wrong.

I do agree to a point, but then again I can’t actually recall either Ashley listening to fans to make a decision or any inkling of Carroll coming back until AFTER the club enquired about it.

It’s like the return of Keegan is somehow viewed as pandering to the fans but I can’t remember one person even really thinking about Keegan after Allardyce 😕

    This was a paragraph from a thread you wrote last year after he was sold;

Local hero my ****. He went for the money! That’s fair enough, but to then have the brass bollocks to get people to “make sure they knew that he didn’t want to leave” is a complete pisstake. They can have Carroll, they can have their seedy agents and dodgy transfer deals and anything else that is associated to the deal. They can also have any FA punishment that may, but probably won’t, head their way. Liverpool and Carroll deserve each other!

    1 yr later;

Sure it’s exciting, maybe even romantic ( Toonsy talking of Carrolls return, yesterday )

Toonsy, i asked you yesterday if you can explain how you now find the idea exciting and romantic and you replied this morning, ”

    “I don’t others do though”. 😯

Wow! Having read your thread yesterday you certainly gave the impression they were your sentiments. You certainly never clarified they weren’t your thoughts. I have made my own conclusions what you really thought and just like I criticised many on here yesterday for clapping like seals for AC possible return yet calling him a horrible gypsy judas for the past 12 months! 😯

I’m pleased I’m down the line and don’t change like the wind as many do. Football fans are renowned for it but when it’s pointed at individuals they deny it. 😉

    Where’s my reality train? 😆

  16. CC @ 15 – I know. Great init. I’m not even overly bothered about Carroll. I’m more interested in us taking the **** out of Liverpool and their “ambition” isn’t that right Jose 😆

  17. I’d pay £13 plus add ons to £15m. The lad has the potential to be Englands best striker and one of the best in Europe imo.

Even if he doesn’t fullfill his full potential we still know we’d be getting a bloody good player for er nothing!

In fairness it would appear we could be on the verge of getting Cabaye, Cisse, Ba, Marvauex, Obertan and Andy Carroll for…. Andy Carroll.

Would be deliughted if we got him back as I always rated – although some didn’t – but if we didn’t manage to get him it wouldn’t be a major problem as long as we brought someone else in instead.

  18. @14 – exactly, Bigger Lad isn’t exactly setting the PL on fire since his move & who’s to say he would if he came back 😕

I’d personally rather take teh chance of de Jong or another young striker ourwith the PL who wouldn’t be so full of himself & still want stupid wages like he’s on at present 🙄

  21. @10 – I see what you’re saying, but I think you’re vastly underestimating the impact of psychology, especially on a rather impressionable lad with a very narrow experience of life. I honestly believe he didn’t hit the target well in Liverpool because he never felt he belonged there. His mind was never where it needed to be.

As for ‘good strikers score anywhere’ I can think of far more examples that support the opposite assertion. Torres is the obvious one, but there are just so many examples.

Andy’s a simple-minded kid. He’s not blessed with the kind of self-manipulation of his mood and psychology that you’ll see in Tiger Woods types. For him it’s much more about base mental state – confidence, groundedness, belonging, popularity, familiarity.

Can you tell I used to live with a shrink?

““No — he’s worth f*** all.” when asked by a NFC supporter last year if he thought 30 million was a lot for Andy Carroll.

This is the same man who has recently been behind re-signing him. Andy is a decent guy and has been shown nothing but disrespect from Mike and Derrick.

As for wanting someone who does want to come back, you got that from the horses mouth did yer or just the ‘supposed’ sources that say that what Bigger lad wants 😕

What I’d rather have is someone who wants to play for us but not at the risk of having to pay them stupid wages & wearing B&W tinted glasses due to him being treated as if he did nowt to us when he shyte all over us 18 months ago…

  24. Toonsy @18: I think you’ve pretty much nailed it there! As Stu put it so succinctly, “we could be on the verge of getting Cabaye, Cisse, Ba, Marvauex, Obertan and Andy Carroll for…. Andy Carroll.”

Aye my feelings exactly, I would take him back as we are light in depth up top with Loverman and Best away and Ranger and Xisco hopefully following, But my thoughts on the whole thing havent changed another striker as it stands is a luxury not a necessity, Get the Centre half we need and Debuchy signed sealed and delivered then look at bringing another striker in.

  26. There are going to be some disapointed fans when (if) Carroll comes back and they realise that the reason that he didn’t score was due to him being an average striker. As much as I dislike King Kenny, he can’t be totally to blame for Carrolls poor form.. The reason Carroll sat on the bench so much was because of Carroll playing poorly. But I guess that will matter little because he will score again as soon as he comes back.. 🙂 🙂

I suspect you believe Liverpool should win the title this year because they deserve to and they’re a big name regardless of the team that turns out on the pitch.

You’re above yourselves thinking you’ll challenge for the title every year when you haven’t even competed for it for years. CL is an absolute best case for us and a stretch, i realize that and treat it as such. No matter how well you guys do you won’t challenge for at least three years and for now you look even less likely to get CL than us.

Sometimes the bait is just too tempting not to take a bite…..

Personally I think it was 6 of one and half a dozen of the other, yet no matter which way we look at it…35 million was impossible to turn down regardless of how it really happened.

I’d welcome him back for the right price..no more than 15 million though, which means we are still 20 million up and potentially will have a stronger players with a renewed attitude and desire to want to achieve the very top with us.

  37. Troy, do you think Carroll, if he signs back with us, will be a starter come game day?

      (Quote)

  38. @Wolfie (post 43) Pity Carroll does not have many days.

Sentiment aside if Carroll was not Newcastle born after his last season and a half would his performances over this period justify £15m. People argue if we bought him for 15m or 20m we would be walking away with a 20-15m profit. Why walk away with a £35m profit.

We have to consider where he will be in the pecking order. A starter in front of whom? On the bench behind Ba and Cisse? Then £15m is too much to pay for a player in that role.

The biggest problem with advocates for bringing him back like Shearer is said to have been advocating, is that they want Newcastle to thrive in the future but can never get out of the past.

  39. Hey troy – we took exception to their arrogance thinking they can take who they want from us with carroll and enrique not a personal dig like little Jon just now….

Tough call, and I feel conflicted like many here, but if the money’s too much, we should walk away. 15m is maybe too much.

      (Quote)

  42. Maybe we’re just helping draw out the interest in him so that if villa/WH come along they pay more and our 25% chunk is worth that much more 😈

  43. Maybe we have no intention of wanting him back at all, has anyone thought of that angle? Its easy good press for AP, dekka and Ashley if thye make it known we want AC back isnt it.. it is fanciful and nostaligic.. local boy comes home and al lthat bollocks. We can go in with a 13 million cash offer and if liverwank say yes then we are winners, if they say no we are still winners. AP can say he wants to sign Messi and its with the board to decide on the money side of things if he wants.. its the same thing.

Why would we want an unknown player for £15m who scored 5 goals last season. 😕

We all know what AC can do and we have all made our judgements based on that. That is why the vast majority would welcome him back at the right price and wage.

Lille coach Rudi Garcia admits that he is planning for life without right-back Mathieu Debuchy with the 26-year-old, linked with both Newcastle and Inter Milan, apparently determined to head abroad.

“He has expressed his wish to leave. I understand that. Now, we are searching for a possible replacement,” Garcia told La Voix Du Nord.

  51. @Big Papa

I nearly added that on the end of my post actually. Their expectations are naturally higher. Of course they will have to lower them but for many, which is natural, it takes time.

You still have to remember they have a huge financial turnover and are still a major force in football. Like anything, the right personnel need to be steering it in the right direction.

Not sure if they are at the moment.

  52. Troy my point is, is he now worth 15m only because we sold him for 35m ? And because he has played poorly, the sum of around 15m sounds about right now, doesn’t it? The problem I see is that his current value is based on his sell value to Liverpool. To me he was worth around 15m max when we sold him originaly. So I value him at around 7 or 8m now… People need to forget the 35m as it was a bullshit figure to begin with…
