What is a fair price for Andy Carroll?

What price for Andy Carroll?
So another day, and another twist in the protracted saga that is Andy Carroll’s future.

Will he stay at Anfield? Will he leave for pastures new, or indeed not so new? I’m personally not sure, although it seems as though Carroll is only keen on leaving, either temporarily or permanently, is a club can offer European football.

Alan Pardew attracted a lot of criticism from Liverpool fans during the week as he said pretty much what everyone know and stated that Liverpool are going to have to take a hit if they want to offload their misfiring forward. The rights and wrongs of that have been discussed already, but with Liverpool wanting somewhere in the region of £20m I’m just wondering what a realistic price would be for the most expensive Englishman of all time?

Currently Carroll is rated at £13.5m by Transfermarkt.co.uk which values players on current form. Whether it’s right or wrong is up for debate but I’d personally question it.

Of course it’s all a matter of opinion but I happen to think that Carroll, based on his last 18 months, is worth no more than £10m. You can call potential as much as you like, but he had that at Newcastle and has so far failed to fulfil it at Liverpool so why should it be a consideration now?

I just think there is a premium being put on the price of Andy Carroll’s head by Newcastle fans based on nothing other than the fact he is a Geordie who did well for us for two half seasons – one in the Championship and one in the Premier League. I keep saying this but would people be happy to spend £20m on Kevin Davies who has outscored Carroll in a weaker team? Though not…

End of the day it’s a pointless argument I guess. No fans have any real say as to what goes on during transfer negotiations and we aren’t privvy to information that is flying around boardrooms currently, plus it’s not actually our money which I guess makes it easier to spend.

So, purely theoretical as I don’t believe Carroll will be leaving Liverpool anyway, what value would you put on his head if you were making the decision to sign him or not?

P.S: For any Liverpool fans wondering why this has been written, ask your manager who started all of this!

  1. “What is a club in any case? Not the building or the Directors or the people who are paid to represent it. It’s not the television contracts, get out clauses or the marketing departments or the Executive boxes. It’s the noise , the passion, the feeling of belonging, the pride in your city” – Sir Bobby Robson

  3. Pup@300 ,That is the best of his quotes right there spot on mate 😀

I also liked “We can’t replace Gary Speed. Where do you get an experienced player like him with a left foot and a head?” 😉

Two great football men for clubs and country RIP both of them.

  5. Shame we couldnt get it done last week so he could have given us a taster in the airfix bridge tournament but im sure there will be a dodgy stream or three around for the Den Haag match 😎

  6. I know Sir Alex Ferguson gets some stick about his attitude, but I have never seen such an emotional eulogy filled with warmth and humour that he gave Bobby, no script and straight from the heart and a fitting tribute from one great manager to another.

  7. pup, 😆 I’d forgotten that one ,classic. 😆

Robert @314 agree ,it was full of warmth and affection and respect for a fellow manager.

  8. The England team plane was held up while Bobby went storming back into the airport, one of the coaching staff caught up with him and he said, ” That bloody Peter Reid is late again”, the coach then explained that he wouldn’t be turning up at all as he wasn’t selected.

  13. I think those players would be better suited to a 442, Stevo.

Ba upfront with Cisse, Cabaye in the middle with Tiote and Marveaux on the left wing.

I certainly wouldn’t play Marveaux as a DM.

Marvo at CDM ❓ would have thought this would make more sense

Mind you despite Marvauew showing promise during preseason so far I can see Pardew picking Jonas ahead of him. Also if Simpson isn’t gone/Debuchy is here than I can’t see tav getting a start for that match.

  19. Kimtoon 😆

To be honest, I do think most people will be underwhelmed (whether they’ll admit to it or not) because most seem to massively underrate Simmo and massively overrate, well, any other full back.

  20. Troy @ 341 you should be grateful for what ever Jabba gives us, what more do you want like he has already saved us from doing a Rangers 👿 😆
As I said I hope good isn’t one of the 2 players that Pards was hoping for because the clock is ticking

  21. Newkie ,tbh I’m kinda hopeing Simmo stays with us as he’s certainly not the worst defender you could have and noone can say he never gives his all. 😉

  23. Debuchy, imminent new offer from Newcastle
    10 THE SPORT | 31.07.12 | 22:00

In the next few hours, the leaders Newcastle need to submit a new offer – revised upwards – in Lille for Mathieu Debuchy. The club was alerted northerner. He expects the fax from Newcastle.

So far, the Magpies were stranded at $ 6 million, including bonuses. This time, President Michel Seydoux expects at least an offer of € 8 million strong, without bonuses.

Seydoux wants at least 8 million without bonus
If it does not get this award, the President of the LOSC could lose patience and cut to the quick by closing the door for the departure of Mathieu Debuchy, which, in turn, absolutely wants to join Newcastle. Remains to see how much the new offer from the English club.

  24. I’m sweet as a nut me like. Don’t really see what there is to be stressed about ❓

      (Quote)

  25. That’s only £6.3m kim so possible.

The only thing i’ll say about the google translate jobby is that the article says they ‘should’ make a new offer, not really ‘must’, i.e. its not a deadline and just the reporters opinion 😉

I want debuchy as much as the next fan but as you say, most do underrate simmo. I expect him to be 15/20% better going forward/ on the ball and 5/10% worse defensively (mainly goal line clearances)

      (Quote)

  26. Looking at the stats etc. Simpson shepherds the player away from goal, whereas Debuchey dives in with the tackle. Both equally effective but Debauchery picks up more cards. Going forward however no comparison. Debauchery much better.

  27. I walked into my kitchen the other day and the was a magpie sitting on the counter. It looked at me for a few seconds and then flew straight out the window. We won that ‘tournament’ that day.

I’ll be sure to let you guys know if something similar happens on the morning of FA cup final day 😉 😆

  28. Hopefully not kim 😆 Maybe once he heard about van der wiel on the cheap though he pulled out though 🙄

  29. Id like to think we were holding out a bit on transfers to see if we would lose ba and need to dedicate extra funds for a striker. Hopefully we’ll pick up a bit in the next week or two….

  30. It still amazes me how many half wits on twatter still believe that all people have to do is bid £7m and hes away, If that was the case he have left two months back.

I remember Llambias saying it cost us £6m to sign Ba and we were getting a player on a free from a relegated club who was more famous for a quote from charva pulis than his goal ratio (good as it was for wham/hoffenheim)

What would his entourage want for signing on fees and agent fees now after last season, The chronicle probably werent far off when the said it was worth about £20m overall…

      (Quote)

  31. Could it be that some of the moves that we want to make were waiting for August 1st to come along? Perhaps there was too much uncertainty around Ba’s future to start acquiring players. For instance, if you assume Ba is staying and you spend your wad on defense then suddenly Ba is off, you’re sort of SOL with being able to buy high quality replacement.

If Ba stays, then you don’t need to break the bank on attack and can go ahead and spend on defense as needed.

Or has all of that already been theorized and I am just late to the discussion?

Do you get what I am saying though?

Look forward to seeing the mail report Ba joining Spurs for £15m in the morning… 🙄

  34. Premandup

Good ol bit of Debauchery… 😉

He will be better going forward, but I always thought Simmo did a *decent* job at that too-most accurate crosses last season and he did overlap and the like to provide space for Obertan/Benny and Barton all of the season before. He does just seem to lack that killer instinct of a natural footballer…like Santon I guess 😉
