Double Dutch deal for United?

United bound?
It would seem that Newcastle have moved on to other targets following their failure to land Mathieu Debuchy from Lille, and one of those other targets is believed to be Ajax right-back Gregory van der Wiel.

Rumour has it that Newcastle are looking to tie up a deal for a pair of Dutch internationals from Ajax in the shape of van der Wiel and another name that has become familiar to us over the summer – Vurnon Anita. A fee of £10million has been mentioned although I personally feel it will cost us more if we want to secure the pair.

Of course we’ve heard the lines that we’ve moved onto other targets before only to see our original target turn up at St James’ Park a bit further down the line, but with time running out in the transfer window and the season fast approaching the need for reinforcements couldn’t be greater. We need a breakthrough and we need it soon.

It’s almost reached the point where I’ve been pretty much ignoring all rumours and steering clear of the web as I’m pretty much resigned to nothing happening in the transfer market, and if it does it will be a pleasant surprise. I’ve just used this latest rumour to have a bit of a whinge more than anything if truth be told.

By now we’re all aware of the transfer policy and I, for one, am not surprised that qualifying for the Europa League has signalled no change in direction from the board. Why would it? The money on offer is, realistically, hardly worth bothering with in fairness.

However there is the fact that we need to strengthen to remain competitive at the top end of the Premier League table. I don’t think we’re in as bad a state as some are making out as some of our younger players and other new signings have looked as though they could play a part for us this season, but there is still room for improvement.

As for Vurnon Anita and Gregory van der Wiel… I doubt it very much…

  1. If the rumours that Pardew has fallen out with the board then I suggest we haven’t anyone lined up.

No one knows what’s going on to be fair, whether it be transfer rumours or a boardroom split.

    Believe nowt til it happens.

Im expecting a late offer to come in for one or more of our players, right near the deadline to tempt Mikey.

Can you imagine if we had £40m from revenue streams, £5m already made on players and then a fat cheque for Cheike. 😯

  2. Latest rumour on Liverpool site is Cabs and Ba plus £2m for Carroll if they don’t get a striker and Cabs and £10m if they do 😯 😆 😆 😆 😆 ,and they call us delusional 🙄 😆 .

Still no signings yet then 😉

Don’t know much about Van Der Weil but someone on a previous thread was saying he has a tendancy to hide and isn’t that good a player 🙄 ❗

Likewise Anita is an unknown quantity to me also .

  3. Two Dutch internationals would do me. It would still leave us short a player or two but it’s the minimum I’d accept.

  4. Alan R@4 , I really hope that’s not true or all our good work will go down the pan. This is probably the **** that Alan Brazil was sprouting last night ,which has been rubbished by Dekka via nufc twitter last night.

  5. vegas@6 ,My main problem with them two mentioned is nither is a CB which I think is our main priority .

  6. Nowt wrong with Saylor ,him and Colo best pairing in Prem 1st half of the season befor his injury ,the stats prove it and all the pundits were raving about them so he/they must of been something right,

  7. Stardy that record is stuck again, why would you want a CB sure you think highly of Willo or have you changed your mind after last season ? Come on Stardy don’t be shy 😆

As for players coming in i’ll believe it when I see it, yeah Jabba could surprise us and get a few players in , but it wont surprise me to see him gambling on trying to do it with what we have, Toonsy the Europa mightn’t be worth much in money terms but it gets us in that window, and it gets Jabba’s SD out there so I just can’t believe that he wouldn’t make the most out of it.

  8. Kim mate… Do you not think it strange how we keep going in with really silly low bids which we know won’t be accepted. I’ve said it before and say it again, the club spent their budget in January on cisse.. Something does not seem right this summer mate and I also heard Alan Brazil, but I heard about Pardew last week…. He’s not happy mate…

  9. Dave – Willo was decent in the Championship but as the team and standard has improved he is showing his inexperience – he makes me worry every time he has the ball.

    Saylors still gash though 😆

Pardz is man enough to dish out and take a verbal stoush without throwing in the towel.. nothing to worry about, if it happened at all 🙂

  17. Bris yeah he’s just a ******** that has been banned several times. I keep giving him a chance to grow up and add to the debate but as usual he lets himsel down. But he has been warned 😉
Aussie there is a fair few on here that have the same opinion off Jabba and there is evidence to back it up, so what are we to do ignore it ❓

  18. Big Dave – yes, until the window closes. If we get no players through the door then I will be joining the chorus mate.. Until then I will keep a lid on the anger and frustration levels. 🙂 🙂

  19. Sure we could go with what we have, but only in regard to midfield and forwards.
If we dont bring in some defensive help, just a couple of injuries will leave us uncompetitive and looking at both elimination from European competition and a chance of once again achieving a spot in europe.
This would result in lost revenue and the fact Ashley would miss out on a slew of games that would give Sports Direct access to a larger European audience for his freebie advertising brand name.
Ya gotta spend money to make money and aint that what Ashleys about
    (not the spending part)

  20. I’ve lost all hope for this transfer window tbh, the targets are 2 very good ones to have and I’d love to see them both in black and white but personally I am tired now…. Qualifying for europe, finishing high in the league as well as other gains of cash we should be not playing the haggle game as much as we are, Lille were asking for 2m more euro and this was too much to ask for a world class full back with a promising future? Now that we have Anita and Van der Wiel on our target I’m expecting nothing out of it, I check everyday for all transfers since I am a big football fan in general as well as a huge newcastle fan but it’s just not looking good at all. I had high hopes for this but I should have known better it is Newcastle after all isnt it? We take the long road around EVERYTHING and if there is an easy route we will avoid that like the plague.

Aussie thats a cracker mate, so by the same token should the fans saying that Jabba will spend what is needed just keep a lid on it and say nowt until the window closes 😆 ❓ or is it just the ones that question Jabba spending whats needed ❓ fuk it would be very quiet on here then going by that logic 😉

  23. I could well believe that Pardew is as frustrated with the lack of signings as us fans. But this crack about Pardew considering leaving I just don’t buy.

That said, this is the toon so I wouldn’t be overly surprised if next week we signed Debuchy, Carroll and Douglas .., and Pardew left, coz that’s how mad our club can be at times.

Rumours again, but I’ve read that we could get VDW for around £3m as he only had a year left on contract. If that’s the case, he’d be a good purchase as I think he’s a bit of a troubled soul at the moment, like Benny was when he came, but I think Pardew could work his magic and get the best out the lad again.
As for Anita, don’t know enough about the lad but seems expensive.
I still like pieters but don’t know about his fitness, but he’d be cover for LB and CB which I think would be better for us.

All will become clear in the fullness of time though.

      (Quote)

  24. No Dave not at all… but if you worked or dealt with someone who was constantly negative all the time ( even with good reason) would you find them tiring to be around??. I’m not saying we should be sugar coating anything, it just takes too much energy to be feckin angry all the time.. Most of the crew on here know each others views, why is it hard for you to actually wait and see what happens before slaging Jabba off all the time??

      (Quote)

  25. Brian – understand the frustrations and we would obviously all love to see some new lads in the B&W shirt, particularly as we do need strengthening in certain areas (CB and FB in particular).

However – “we should be not playing the haggle game as much as we are”; yes we should, any good businessman plays the haggling game to get the best deal possible.

“Lille were asking for 2m more euro and this was too much to ask for a world class full back with a promising future” – I think the problem was that it started with asking for 2m and then when we agreed it would get higher and higher – when does one stop being taken for a mug? Bear in mind the Debuchy deal was for one fullback – Barca and the likes can afford to pay large sums for full backs but anything from £8 mil onwards for a team with our current finances is a hefty price to pay.

I would say be patient and see what comes by the end of the transfer window – remember last season we bagged one of our biggest and best signings in Cisse in January! Personally I would like to see our youth provide the ‘squad depth’ this year and be used perhaps more than last year – it is a risk but could pay off in the years to come.

  27. I would be happy with Van Der Wiel in if we can’t get Dubuchy. It may be worth waiting though. Apparently they offered him for £6m when the Debuchy bid failed. He has one season left on his contract and won’t renew. Maybe it’s worth waiting to Jan and putting them in a position where they have to accept less or lose him for nothing! Of course this is if Carr and Pardew even rate him, they seem to be after Anita.

  28. Aussie just so that you know even if Jabba bought 3 or 4 top players I will still be on his case, maybe you can forgive and forget the way he treated our legends, fans, the singing section, put us through the SD @ SJP ***** then decided to re name the ground and cover it with SD banners every where.
But I won’t because it’s not just about him bringing a few players in to buy my loyalty, and if that is tiring for you well im sorry you feel that way but I do have an avatar so it’s pretty easy to scroll past mine and not read it if it annoys you. 😉
Do you not think I find it tiring reading some of the **** on here about how we’ll still be strong enough without new players brought in and how Jabba has saved our club etc etc, it fuking pisses me off and sometime I will question people on it but I don’t tell them to give it a rest because its tiring because everyone on here is entitiled to have their own opinion without having to conform to a certain view.
As I said it’s simple to scroll past certain bloggers post if it annoys you that much, I know I do it sometimes. 😉
Reet back to do a bit catch you’s tonight.

  29. I’m frustrated that we haven’t signed anyone yet, but I do believe we will sign players in this window. It may not be the 3 that we hoped for but I see at least 2 coming in.

I think we just need a signing to settle everyone down – including myself!

  30. Big Dave, have I ever told you to give a rest mate? ? My original comment was more about the pot calling the kettle black with you and Stardy.. We have had a few debates on here in the past and all though we have disagreed, I have never told you or any one that they should ‘shut up’ in regards to having an opinion (except Troy, whom I reserve special judgement for 🙂 ) So I think you are getting the wrong end of the stick here….

  33. Wellington has it at 25. Stop bloody worrying! 😈

Toonsy, I’d argue against your statement of, “the fact that we need to strengthen to remain competitive at the top end of the Premier League table”. I don’t think that’s a fact at all. It’s an opinion; possibly even a probability – but who’s to say we can’t do at least as well this term as last with the people we’ve already got?

I’m really not that bothered about more recruitment. I’d be happy to see some bodies in, but I think the management have thoroughly earned our trust that they’ll strengthen only if they can get the right player on the right deal. Likewise, they’ll only sell if it’s a Carroll job: so much that they can do much better with the dosh.

    We’ll be fine.

  34. There he goes again – that Wellington gadgie talking that sense stuff all over the place. Won’t last 5 minutes on here, like. 😆

  35. DJG – the problem I have with that and other suggestions I’ve heard about waiting on Debuchy til nearer the end of the window in a hope that Lille will buckle – is what if they dont?!
The problem with that plan is that there is nothing stopping other clubs doing the same. Clubs that can offer the players bigger wages and who are prepared to pay agent fees.
If we want the player and feel they can improve our squad – just pay the money and get them in rather than risk loosing them to other clubs.

      (Quote)

  36. Enough with the player-bashing already! Simmo, Raylor, Saylor and Willo were part of the squad that got us back into Europe in 2 seasons from relegation! I think they deserve better than their own fans taking pot-shots at them on blogs!

    Rant over. Peace out.

      (Quote)

  37. Just to confirm, I actually think Simmo is a good full back, and Raylor a decent squaddie who at full back is entirely reliant on Jonas for cover but otherwise decent.

If we want to progress though, I see no point in signing someone worse than both of them, despite his age and potential.

      (Quote)

  38. ‘Raylor a decent squaddie who at full back is entirely reliant on Jonas for cover’

Every full-back in the world is reliant on cover from the wing and DM (and CB when they go forward). Enrique and Jonas were on the same wavelength as well. The point is that the team has a fluid dynamic and no-one is ever left two-on-one. During the period that Raylor and Jonas played left wing we didn’t lose 11 competetive games in a row. This is a comment that baffles me as no fullback on the planet can survive without some sort of cover, although I acknowledge that Raylor needs more, but you could argue Santon needs Jonas just as much IMO.

      (Quote)

  39. DJG-I know every full back has to have help from somewhere on the pitch, my point is that Raylor was far more reliant on Jonas than say Simmo was on Obertan, or for that case many other full backs in the premiership. The fact that Jonas was MOTM for a number of those first 11 games and then began to tire tells its own story surely? He couldn’t continuously do Raylor’s running for him in every match, and it would be **** right foolish to expect him to.

Santon needs him because he goes missing and his positioning is still off. Raylor needs him because he can’t keep up with a tricycle.

      (Quote)

  40. Whumpie bang on.

That’s why if we got a young CB & striker I would be happy with our squad. The players that got us into Europe deserve a crack of the whip. Would be dangerous without a CB/striker but Debuchy/Anita etc = a luxury.

Where are these “£40 million revenue stream” noises coming from?

Even discounting relegation we were heavily losing money each year. 5th highest wages in the league for a midtable team. So if Ashley is recouping a percentage of his loan each year then that’s fair enough. If i sunk in a loan somewhere I’d probably expect it back to.

Don’t understand the fear that players will be sold last minute. We are basing it on one scenario, that obscene amount of money for a wantaway Andy Carroll.

  41. Today backs are expected to get forward and forwards to track back. Its a team game but in a perfect world it would work out 50/50.If a player is in constant need of help hes not good enough simple. There is a need for players to spend a lot of game time together so squad players will never be perfect but I think ours have done a sterling job.

“If a player is in constant need of help hes not good enough simple.”

I’d argue, with Raylor as the perfect example, that if we get the results, it’s good enough. Without Raylor we’d have missed out on some vital goals (“Over the wall” ring any bells?) and points. I’m sure Pardeiu knews exactly what he’s doing when he plays Raylor, and everyone knows how they need to adjust to make way for his place on the field. He’s still our best taker of free kicks and throw-ins, and isn’t shy of putting in some killer crosses. If it means Jonas can’t get forward as much to have all that, so be it – against certain opposition.

    Stoke, for a start. 😆

Did anyone else read about how he refused to have his team play in red and white stripes at SJP, so had them play that match in black and white? Totally got the crowd behind his team. Genius.

  48. Anyone else think we’re just waiting for Douglas to be in Holland long enough to be a national before we take him?

      (Quote)

  49. AndrewT – I think that too but wonder why we can’t sign him but wait to register him until after he gets his citizenship – similar to a free transfer before their contract expiries with their current club. The only thing I can think about that is it may cause problems when he applies for it, as in the Dutch authorities may not grant it knowing it’s his intention to leave for England as soon as he has it 😕

      (Quote)

  50. Andrew T@66-

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if that’s what we’re doing with Douglas. He wouldn’t be my first choice CB, because his skill set seems to be the same as Saylor and Williamson, at least in style. I also think we could possibly be waiting for Pieters to be healthy enough to pass a medical, but who knows. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if we had zero transfer activity before the window closes, or if we brought in 4 or 5 players and sent out 2 or 3 others. I just hope we end the summer with one more quality CB than we have right now, at the very least, and hopefully a fullback and a striker. And although some people feel that the midfield is already overcrowded, I think an Anita-type player would be nice, as well, to provide a strong defensive with Tiote plus the back four, allowing a fluid front four to attack without worry.

      (Quote)

  51. Interesting thoughts on Douglas. Its curious that we haven’t been strongly linked with a cab in awhile despite an obvious need

      (Quote)

  52. Sharpy17@68-

It’s possible that we do have a fee agreed, and they’re just waiting to announce it. It would be nice to have him in now to settle in, but waiting a bit is better than no CB at all.

      (Quote)

  53. But again, even if we get Douglas, it seems like we’re leaving ourselves awfully thin if Coloccini gets hurt. A tandem of Douglas and Saylor would be dynamite against a team like Stoke or Norwich, but some of the better-passing teams would pick them apart. Ideally, it would be nice to pick up a CB who’s comfortable passing out of the back and can play either LB or RB in a pinch.

      (Quote)

  54. Charlie – I know nowt about citizenships to be honest so I may be wrong. But all the talk of Douglas has died down, for us and for other interested parties coz I think Fulham and another club were reportedly interested. I think Douglas will be our rushed through transfer in the last week of the window. Twente have already bought a CB to replace him in Jan so expect to loose him … fingerscrossed anyway.
On a similar note, all the Remy chat has quietened down as well?!

I remain hopeful, and like I said earlier, would be great to get someone in soon just to settle everyone down.
