Calm down dear, we’re only two games in!

Don’t panic, yet
The 2-0 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday evening wasn’t exactly surprising. Well, not to me anyway…

However it seems to have been a catalyst for some to extinguish any hopes that they may have had for this season based purely on this one result.

Now I’m not suggesting for one moment that everything is fine and well and I know we didn’t exactly cover ourselves in glory at Stamford Bridge, but the result was far from embarrassing and, on another day, we’ have found the back of the net with at least one of our three guilt edged chances that fell to Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba on the night. Another game on another night maybe?

Personally I think a bit of perspective is needed. The mood is down at the moment seemingly, but we’ve mustered three points from our first two league games, and tough league games at that. We beat Tottenham who would have been in the Champions League this season had the other team we have faced thus far not actually won the competition last season.

Surely that isn’t too bad is it?

Chins up. There is plenty of time to go in this season so don’t chuck in all your expectations just yet, especially not based on a loss against the European Champions.

I also understand that a lot of people are less than impressed with our business in this window to date, and with only just over 72 hours of the transfer window remaining some are understandably nervous regarding both incoming AND potentially outgoing transfers having an effect on our season.

Yes I’ll be annoyed (but only with the board for failing to back their manager) if we fail to bring anyone else in and yes I agree that it is leaving us vulnerable to injuries and suspension with our hectic list of fixtures. However, we still have a good team with some cracking players, don’t forget it.

Many of you won;t agree with this of course, but at the end of the day we’ve played two tough games to start the season with. They were never going to be easy, regardless of whether we’d signed five, ten, fifteen players, and I’m happy with the three points we have so far.

The rest can wait until/if/when it happens…

  1. KIM ime not really one for saying i told you so,its just i never really did expect us to make any first team spendings ive said before jabba is in this game to make money as long as things are ticking over hes happy, yes we had a chance to move forward with just a little cash spent but we will have to accept this is the way the club is run now bring in a few young players and bring them on then they can move on the likes of tiote, cabaye, cissie for big money and on it rolls

I don’t see the problem in waiting until deadline day is closed. Then we can blame the regime if they fail. .

Until then, no criticism from moi. 😯

  3. Exactly, pissing about over the odd million quid, or whatever.
I dont recall chelsea haggling over hazards £35M, or manure with RVP.
The principle is the same at our price range too.
Just buy the players we need NOW ffs.

Hope we get a couple pf players in soon, i think Erik Pieters is the one we want covers CB and LB,

But do we want Mandy Carroll?

  6. On the original thread topic, I’m well happy with the 3 points so far, despite not playing so good. But most of all I want us to beating thr teams we expect to finish below us in the league. Starting with Aston Vile.
We just MUST take all 3 points from these clubs, especially so the home games. This will be a real mark of how far we have or haven’t progressed, since getting relegated.
Personally I hope AV get relegated, as I loath and despise them. Not just for their over celebration of our demise, but also for the tramps that defaced the Sir Bobby Robson memorial garden, the last time they visited us.
Total and utter disgrace 👿 👿

  7. Alex – No chance. This is just Fatty having a laugh at cesspool.
I dont even think we would stump up £12M if that offer was accepted, unless we were selling Cabaye/Tiote for even bigger bucks etc.
Certainly cant see us bidding even more than that, but then again the Fat one often leaves me lost for words. So really nothing should surprise me anymore. lol

I dont want carroll back anyway would much rather get Gameiro, remy etc or give Campbell a chance.

Bottom line is to make the club an appealing proposition to any potential purchaser. Maybe even start to repay some of the debt to Fatty.
I wonder if Roman Abramovitch wants any of his £1Bn back from chelsea. ❓
meh. same old ****, just a different season.

I can understand the concerns being expressed but have the regime not deserved some credit since they first took over. They have produced the goods (in general – still waitng for CB) over the past two seasons.

Of course I will slate them if they don’t buy or sell players. I judge it on their performance in the market and as yet the window is not closed.

I can understand the club holding out over the odd few million providing they ultimately get the player(s) they want.

I’m still confident we will get Carroll but then again, just as likely to lose a player.

My concerns are tho, we generally get our players in early and the final days of the window are normally a let down.

So the odds are that we won’t get anyone of note. But, here’s hoping.

Yes they have got until Friday night, but I maintain we wont buy what we need, unless we strike it rich by selling off our premium assets first.
I kinda hope no one comes in for any of our players, and then we will see the regime’s true colours.

  16. Ice – I dont think I will ever accept that like, especially when the scum are spending. I do believe that our future should be bringing young talent through like Tav and Campbell – rather than spending big money on a single player as we have in the past.
But you can’t cover every position with youth coming through the ranks and we need to spend when necessary – if they don’t, and the club is ran the way you’re saying – I can see fans giving up season tickets.
P.S – I know you’re not suggestion thats the way you think it should be done, more likely that’s the way it WILL be done … or is it 🙂

When you need a certain player as priority, it’s vital to get him in once he has been identified as what is required. I think our board is trying to be too clever sometimes. It will come back to bite them on the *** sooner or later. But its the Team that will suffer.

  22. Good read mate.

Personally the last two results haven’t affected my expectations either way, wholeheartedly agree that it was two tough games and we got what we expected.

My logic, flawed maybe, sees that we have the same size and quality of squad that we had last season. We were out the cups early so I just see that with the amount of games with decent cup runs and european footy and the same sort of squad we will finish between 5th-8th. That would be with a strong home form season and a bit of luck with any injuries to key players.

The road is yet long…please sign someone for crying out loud!

I can’t believe you aren’t getting more stick for doubting the regime.

There’s so many on here don’t allow you state anything negative about the regime without being criticised.

I understand your frustration but if we just paid up front what the clubs want then they are always going to demand more.

The regime drive a hard bargain and are trying to get the message across that they won’t be dragged into an auction.

I wish the window was closed now to be honest, simply because I don’t see us getting anyone in and if Arsenal offer £15m for Cabaye, Man City offer £15m for Colo and Chelsea offer £20m for Tiote – we are screwed!!!!

  41. Sharpy – I find the local papers are usually not too far off the mark. The local journo’s have their club contacts, and the Board use the local journo’s to manage fans’ expectations.

The Journal is saying that other clubs are looking for better value elsewhere rather than paying £20M for any of our stars. That seems credible. Although our stars seem settled, a lack of ambition in the transfer market might upset them. It seems the Board want to play brinkmanship with LFC for Carroll, but won’t be too perturbed if it doesn’t come off. No doubt they’ll try again in January if he is still a Rodgers’ misfit by then.

I do think the club is right to identify a stiker as their priority, whereas previously it was defender. You cannot afford to take any risks at the business end.

      (Quote)

  42. The slightly embarrassing thing about this transfer window is that everyne has been wanking over our transfer policy and all i’ve heard from the club since January is how we’ve been preparing for this window since the last one closed. Jeez, i wouldn’t mind knowing who was doing the prep.

  43. “Jeez, i wouldn’t mind knowing who was doing the prep.” 😆
Aye, they talk a good game.

  45. 🙁
    Stuart, I have to agree.
If I were Carr I’d begin to start wondering exactly what’s the point of gallivanting all over Europe to identify players when the board refuses to pay their market value.

I guess he just likes traveling, but all this continuous preparation and then we sign one player. It seems to me Carr only identifies cheap replacements if our players are sold at a high price.

If we sell nobody, the board refuse to buy anybody apart from very cheap young prospects… None of which have broken through so far.

      (Quote)

  46. It is not easy getting players from other teams when they are not actually for sale.. Take heart in he fact that we aren’t just buying other teams shitty offcasts..

  47. I honestly don’t get all the people whining about how our squad is weaker than last years?? Not just on here – the Chron site is full of ’em.

Since the start of last season we’ve lost Guthrie, Best, Lovenkrands and Smith, whilst we’ve gained Cisse, Anita, Amalfitano, Bigirimana and Good.

Ok so Good probably won’t feature, but then neither would Smith and Lovenkrands would have only been on the fringes of the bench.

PLUS – everyone else, including some very promising youngsters, are one year older and wiser, and I would imagine the understanding amongst players has improved too.

Yes we need more bodies – every club in the world would say that – but it certainly aint as bad as some would have you believe. KTF!!!

      (Quote)

  48. I see Aussie and bris have finally figured out troy 🙂

TC- I think we’re deeper and better in mf but the same elsewhere. I wish we’d stop this carroll nonsense and a add a defender instead

      (Quote)

  49. B&B – if they identify a striker as a priority I’d agree with that – though I’d follow that by saying that a CB is of equal urgency in my opinion.
If they are identifying a striker as being needed then chasing Carroll is going to leave them without a striker come the end of the window (IMO). Part of me wonder whether the pursuit of Carroll is in the best interest of NUFC or whether its to rub Lpools nose in it.
If we only want to spend £12m on a striker and Lpool want £20m for Carroll, bin Carroll and land a £12m striker. Put the past behind us and move on with a new striker – or is that just too simple?! 😕

      (Quote)

  50. Hi everybody,

I finished reading “Soccernomics” yesterday and the authors wrote a batch of recommendations for transfers. It seems like Jabba, et al are sticking too these ideas pretty closely, except maybe the one about players with personal problems. What do you think?

“As a free service to clubs, here ar the twelve main secrets of the transfer market in full:

A new manger wastes money on transfers; don’t let him.
    Use the wisdom of crowds.
Stars of recent World Cups or European Championships are overvalued; ignore them.
    Certain nationalities are overvalued.
    Older players are overvalued.
Center forwards are overvalued; goalkeepers are undervalued.
Gentlemen prefer blonds: identify and abandon “sight-based prejudices.”
The best time to buy a player is when he is in his early twenties.
Sell any player when another club offers more than he is worth.
Replace your best players even before you sell them.
Buy players with personal problems, and then help them deal with their problems.
    Help your players relocate.”

      (Quote)

  51. Sharpy – I think they must think there’s a chance of getting Carroll for much closer to £12M than £20M. He’s only worth £12M or so IMO.

      (Quote)

    @aussie & Bris

I left your conversation this morning cos Ive been on nights and went to bed. Aussie went to bed in the huff having had an almighty hissy fit. 😆

Again, please trawl back. I was having a sensible conversation with Bootsy and up pops Aussie with a sarcastic comment. I warned him about my disclaimer. 😆

Anyway back to footy, @B&B, I think you are spot on there with your views of Ashley. They will identify a player and value him and if they don’t get him they will move on unpeturbed.

Likewise with Cazza, they will leave it til January if they don’t get him and not worry about it.

      (Quote)

  54. B&B – and also my opinion but to be fair that means jack ****!, if Lpool value him at £20m they won’t sell at £12m. It’s like my 3yr old son keep asking the same question til he does my tits in enough for me to say yes!.
As for Newcastles valuations, well we have all seen how that has worked out so far – Ravel Morrison and Tomkins in Jan to most of the targets this summer the board have offered too litlle.

Ice – I know you’re right mate but when something grips my **** I prefer to get it off my chest like. Particularly as the club is urging fans to buy tickets for the up and coming games or folk out another £50 notes on the new shitey lime green shirt – yet they give nowt back!

  55. 100% Agree Aussie @ 129
    ……
Im sure there are plenty of mediocre players about either over rated or simply past their sell by date

    Or

We can go back to paying over the odds with clubs shifting prices as soon as we are interested

Ive said previous imo its crucial for us to stick to the current transfer policy in order to prevent being held to ransom in future and if that means no one comes in now ..so be it , with the current squad and youngsters knocking on door still think we will finish top 6 and more than capable to putting together a good run in Europe.

If there is truth in the Journal stating we only in market for strikers now personally id prefer that to be Remy rather than Carroll

But if we were willing to break all policy(age/wage structure) Huntelaars buy-out clause is reportedly about the same as whats been claimed we could bid for Carroll £17 million.( i know who would get more goals )

But still no need for panic and certainly not some of the doom n gloom typed on a lot of sites last few days

As for players going out ill be amazed if Cabaye or Tiote goes for £15 mil its gonna take a lot more than that for Ashley to part with either of them.

Sooner the window is bolted shut the better

It will be interesting to see how the club react to bids for our players as it hasn’t really happened yet other than Caroll and they drove a hard bargain.

I would be amazed if they let either Cabaye or Tiote leave for less than £20m each bearing in mind Modric’s price tag.

I defo don’t want the window shut without strengthening.
