Everton v Newcastle – Premier League match preview

Sticky times at Goodison Park?
International breaks are supposed to be a time spent on recuperation and ensuring that the players already on the treatment table have a chance of playing the next game after a fortnight off.

However there is also a possibility of any players who disappear for international duty returning home injured, and that is just what has happened with Tim Krul and Fabricio Coloccini, who picked up elbow and hamstring injuries respectively.

That means we will be going to Goodison Park on reserves which is not a good sign so early in the season, especially when you have seven games in the next twenty days in all competitions to consider. Krul and Colo join Cheik Tiote, Danny Simpson and Ryan Taylor on the treatment table while James Perch, Haris Vuckic and the Ameobi brothers are all at least back in training if not ready to feature for the first team.

For Everton they only have to worry about the absence of Darron Gibson and perhaps Steven Pienaar although reports indicate that the South African schemer should be fit and available for selection by David Moyes.

Previously…

In terms of history at Goodison Park, ours doesn’t make for exciting reading. We’ve won their five times since the inception of the Premier League, with Everton winning on nine occasions. There have been four draws between the two sides at Goodison Park. You could nudge it to six victories for us if you count Ian Rush and his FA Cup 3rd Round winner for us back in 1998.

Our overall record on the blue half of Merseyside isn’t too clever either. Of 81 games at Goodison in all competitions, Everton have won 45 times compared to Newcastle’s 21 victories. In all competitions, and at all grounds, there have been 162 meetings between the two sides. Both sides have won 64 times with the other 34 ending as a draw, obviously.

So how about teams?

As far as team selection goes our only real area of concern is defence. Steve Harper will step in for Tim Krul, which then only leaves the hole at right-back to fill along with the considerable absence of Fabricio Coloccini to attempt to fill.

If Cheik Tiote had been fit I would have said we’d see Vurnon Anota trusted with right-back duty after impressing there against Aston Villa, but I believe James Perch will be given the nod for that particular position. Of course we could still play Anita at right-back should Perch not prove his fitness, and then we could play Gael Bigirimana (again impressive against Villa) next to Yohan Cabaye in the middle of the park. Personally I think this game may be too much for young Gael though. A left field solution, and one that would rile the Everton fans, would be to give Dan Gosling the nod at right-back although I really can’t see that one happening!

The other position worth considering is centre-back which I also think will be fairly easy to solve. Step forward “Scapegoat” Mike Williamson who will be watched by many people who will be itching for him to make a mistake of some sort. I’m fairly certain he’ll get the nod to partner Steven Taylor and in truth his height may well be needed against the likes of Marouane Fellaini and Nikica Jelavić.

Final thoughts

Everton have made a decent start to the Premier League this time around with wins against Aston Villa and Manchester United to their credit, although they were followed up by a loss against West Brom. Newcastle also haven’t made a bad start to the campaign if you look at their points tally. A win over Spurs was followed by a loss to the reigning European Champions and their squad which was bolstered to the tune of over £100 million over the summer whilst a draw against Aston Villa rounded off our league campaign thus far.

The truth is though it isn’t the points tally that is the concern in these early stages of the season and instead it is the performances that are causing concern amongst fans. We’ve looked disjointed, tired, uninterested in part and whether it’s caused by tiredness, a lack of match fitness, injuries or dissent behind the scenes (as some would like you to believe!) it all needs to stop immediately if we are to have any chance of trying to get in the top six again this time around and have any chance of taking anything away from what is a notoriously tough ground to visit.

Howay the lads!

I may think FIFA & UEFA are run by a bunch of spineless wankers but for some reason I still have faith the FFP will come good. When/If they come good, within a few years the city’s and Chelsea’s WILL start to drop back, it will be at this point their investors get bored that they can’t do what they want and leave the clubs, this is why they won’t be at the top.

  2. I fear we could get a bit of a spanking tomorrow. We have 3 of our back five out and the last time that happened Nirwich put 4 past us.

  3. On the article
Really excited about tomorrow, been far too long without NUFC on tv and our 1st SS PL broadcasted match this season. Can’t believe we play Monday then Thursday, it’s bloody ridiculous.

We’ve got Taylor this time, Harper too and I think Anita will do a good job at RB, also Santon is more used to the PL this time, 2-1 toon HWTL.

  5. If we are going to go with this absurd 4-4-2 I would like to see Marv or Oba running at Neville or Hibbert. I’ve thought for a while RB is probably the weakest part of their team. It will be interesting to see how we line up, the tactics have failed so far.

  6. Harper
    Jonas Saylor Willo Santon
    Obertan Anita Cabaye Marv
    HBA
    Ba/Cisse

That’s my preferred starting line. Think it’s more likely we’ll see Bigi in for Marv and Anita at RB, with Jonas LW.
Think we need our strongest possible central midfield as it’s their injury hit area atm.
HBA behind a striker, let him do what he wants.
Also gives us the option of bringing on a striker to change the game as opposed to not having any other options.

Think DJG is looking at it from a 4-4-2 perspective. Marv running at Hibbert, getting to the byline and whipping crosses in for the two strikers. Otherwise 4-4-2 doesn’t make sense.
Additionally HBA will terrorise anyone regardless of who they are, so may as well let someone else give Hibbert nightmares.

  8. In Fact playing Hatem LM with Jonas RM would be a good idea. Baines likes going forward so Jonas can nullify his attacking threat whilst helping out whoever pards picks for RB, meanwhile Ben Arfa will beat their RB and Santon should be able to deal with their winger.

  9. If it’s 4-4-2 I would go……
    —————-Harper————–
    Anita—Taylor—Perch—Santon
    Benny—Cabaye-Jonas—-Marv
    ———–Cisse—Ba—————

As we don’t have Tiote then that is an okay formation, provided the wingers create chances and the two strikers stick them away this time.

  10. The nufcstats article analysis has shown HBA’s average position to be behind the strikers anyway as he wanders inside so much.
We may as well play him there and someone else out wide otherwise our structure is a mess.!

  11. unfortunately we’re not firing on all cylinders yet, this and the loss of Colo and simpson, I reckon we’ll get beat 2-0 😥

If we put Jonas there to defend then won’t that just be an invitation for Baines to attack? If we put someone like Benny or Obertan there Baines will be out of position if he leaves his post, it will draw the CB across etc. I would rather give him a reason to have to stay back than give him a reason to go forward.

  13. Solano-I think that was just for one match mate, and that was where he was moved to after Simmo got injured and we changed formation to 4-3-1-2

  14. interesting read,i never buy this players are tired ****,ffs they start work 9.30/10am 5 days a week knock off at 12.30 and play maybe a couple of games a week everything is done for them apart from getting there backside wiped,i remember steve watson ex toon right back that he could never understand players saying that, how can you be tired of a great hobby and getting well paid for it 😉

I would say from what I have seen he looks a clever player to me though, ‘cuts inside every time’. I don’t know what game you were watching but the games I have seen him in he seems to have a good balance of cross/pass the ball, dribble the ball, cut inside, go outside, to suit the situation. Jonas created nothing against Villa, I think it’s time someone else got a shot.

  18. I think we’ll be doing well to get a point outta Everton.
Ice I agree ref the tiredness they wouldn’t know what a days work was like ffs 😕

  19. We need a better start tomorrow. Often it seems to take a half to get us going. Hopefully a different formation away from home. Try Hatem in behind Ba or Cisse. The midfield will have to help the back 4 out. I don’t worry about Harps in goal but I hope we don’t play Perch at CB if he is fit. Not time to panic but this has to be a real team effort. Remember what Grant Holt did to us when we played Perch and Simpson at CB.

  20. Was just reading there and couldn’t believe that Manure and the Toon are charging £45 for the lge cup game 😯 **** are charging £10 and Chelski are charging £25 so what must the greedy bastads be thinking charging loyal fans £45 👿

I guess we will see. I hope it comes to be anyway, I just wish that Man U and Liverpool didn’t have as big a fan base as they do cus if what I said I think will happen then they’ll be far ahead of everyone else and they are the most annoying supporters when their team is doing well.

      (Quote)

  22. Disgraceful to be charging 45 quid Big Dave. Both teams will probably field weakened sides. Shame on ManUre, a money grab plain and simple. How many will be there I wonder?

C ould swap Marv for Jonas 2nd half if we need some free kicks 😉 or if Marv keeps cutting in too much.

  24. Dave £45 is daylight robbery ,I can only think nither club wants to hang around in it for long and wants to make as much cash in the short term as possible. Reckon they both see the league cup as a distraction going by this price ,stupid money ,don’t they know we’re in a double dip ffs. 👿

  25. Tomorrow will be standard crack. We start off Pardew style, cagey and defensively, lose a goal, and ultimately we’ll lose 3-0. Sorry like, but not filled with confidence at all for tomorrow.

      (Quote)

  26. Kim I think it’s a disgrace and they both should be ashamed of themselves, as you say money is already tight and they’ll more than likely not even be playing full strength teams 👿

  27. Man is .org full of freaking retards… a bunch of plastic so-called toon fans…
wtf can Pardew do about a horrendous unfortunate run of injuries ?
